according to my Indonesian friend this is very authentic indo food! my first time trying and everything was so flavorful and yummy!!! We ordered so well i would honestly reorder everything again!! we got the following: - Pempek - Nasi padang bungkus - Soto betawi - Nasi padang set - Mi goreng w beef everything was so amazing!! if you’re not sure what to order highly rec anything we got. worth the trek in the blizzard 😋

Enak enak. Our usual spot for authentic tasty Indonesian food. We have tried almost all dishes over time. We have done both eat in and take away and delivery and quality is always same and good. Highly recommend A+.

A trusted friend brought me here, knowing that I love Indonesian food. I had the Nasi Vegetarian Ikan Balado. It was fantastic. The restaurant was cozy and charming and the service was very friendly. I'll be back.

Chicken satays are delicious, creamy. Ayam goreng sambal ijo is very yummy, the sauce is so good. Ayam bakar Padang is sweet and spicy, so flavorful and creamy 😋

R18 and R1, satay chicken were also really good. I liked the sambal terasi. Think I prefer my sambal sweet. Hit the spot for south East Asian cravings!

Being from Sumatra Utara (Padang), I was so excited to get a taste of home in the city. Food came out fast and was delicious! I also got the es teler which was so freshing! 10/10 will come back.

Just went here for the second time and it was just as fantastic as the first. Of the numerous Indonesian restaurants I've tried in New York, this is probably my favorite. The dishes are authentic and they offer an impressive variety. If you haven't had Indonesian food before, you can't go wrong with nasi campur, a dish consisting of rice and several accompaniments. My personal favorite is nasi campur rendang, the highlight of which is a tender beef packed with spices and stewed to perfection. Rendang is hard to get right but they do a really solid job with it. Another staple is nasi goreng, or Indonesian fried rice. They have a variety of toppings to choose from but I got the nasi goreng ikan asin, which is salted fish. I absolutely loved it (because I love salted fish) but note it does have a strong flavor. Finally, one more classic is sate atam. You can add lontong (rice cake) if you want your meat-carb combo, which we did. The peanut sauce is top-notch and don't forget the sambal (chili sauce), which should be available at your table. I'll definitely be back whenever I'm remotely in the area!

The restaurant doesn't have two many tables...maybe 10, but it wasn't busy when we were there. The menu was extensive and not food that I'm particularly familiar with. However, we got Sate Padang. The beef tongue was tender and the curry was rich. Loved the addition of the rice cakes. Also ordered the Nasi Pecel Ikan. The fish was flavorful and the plate was fresh. Wish there was more fried tempe! Finally got the Sumatera's Soto. The broth was light but also coconut-y and savory

I walked in here knowing nothing about Indonesian food and ordered kind of random stuff. Everything was so delicious. As an appetizer I got the Gado Gado, which was a mix of various items including tofu and hard boiled egg coated in a thick peanut sauce. It was decently sweet but what enough salt to balance it out. My entree was the nasi campur ayam goreng. The fried chicken on this plate was incredible. Crispy coating and an extremely juicy interior. It was very well seasoned on its own, but dipping it in the spicy condiment on this plate created such an incredible bite. The deep fried egg with chili sauce was also great. While I wasn't crazy about the vegetable curry, the other item on the dish (some kind of mixture of tempeh, peppers and maybe some other vegetables?) had a unique and delicious flavor. Very pleased with my meal here, as well as the kind and patient service. Now that I have read some of the other Yelp reviews, there are certainly other items I would like to try on a return trip.

**Cash or Venmo only** Sumatera (formerly Sky Cafe) has been on my list for ages and I finally made it in. Menu seems pretty much the same as Sky Cafe. My boyfriend and I came for dinner and tried: + Batagor (fried fish cake) - great + Nasi bebek goreng (fried duck) - great + Sumatera's Soto (chicken broth coconut soup) - this was my favorite thing... it actually healed me. And the shrimp chips were so good! A few weeks later when I had a cold, I ordered this soup for delivery. Better in person but still great. Coconut rice was also perfect.

The pecel lele was fried to a nice crisp; the catfish was tasty and the sambal added an extra kick. The fried tempeh, coconut rice, and tofu were pleasant accoutrements. The chicken skewers had a great and sweet peanut sauce while the beef tongue skewers were a bit spicy with its curry, accompanied by rice cakes.

Wanted to try Indonesian food and this place did not disappoint! We got the Sumatero's Soto soup which had chicken in a coconut broth and were pleasantly surprised. It is not creamy but it is very rich. They give you a big side of white rice and crackers to eat with this soup. Then we got a rice dish- the Nasi Padang Bungkus which was an assortment of rice, rendang, curry jackfruit, egg, sambal chips, fried potatoes, and cucumber all wrapped inside a banana leaf. Get the spice on the side because it is very spicy! Loved the variety of different flavors and textures in the dish! A lot of people ordered the noodle dishes so I assume those are good too. Very small restaurant with limited staff so expect to wait a little bit for a table. It seemed like they only had 1 person running all the tables. There is a 3% surcharge for credit card payments. They accept Venmo, Zelle if you don't have cash!

This is one of my favorite restaurant in New York! My go to dish is the fried fish filet with sambal and fried egg. It also comes with a light vegetable curry that is also delicious. This place used to be called Sky Cafe, but rebranded to Sumatera now and I'm so glad they're still around! I was heartbroken when I saw that Sky Cafe was permanently closed on Google. I've eaten here several times. One time I came with a large group of 9 and we ordered a lot off the menu, most of which I don't remember the names, but everything was delicious! You really can't go wrong here. The food is extremely flavorful and spicy (some dishes). The portion is also a perfect amount. I highly recommend this place!

My husband is taiwanese but LOVES Indonesian food.. ever since I introduced him to this place (I'm Malay), he hasn't stopped craving their food - especially their Nasi Bungkus! It's a small sit in restaurant so I'm not sure a big group would work if you don't call ahead of time and ask if they're able to accomodate. However, very family vibe and the servers there speak Bahasa, Hokkien, Mandarin and English! It's so refreshing to find a restaurant that speaks everything you speak :) Food wise - love love LOVE their Gado Gado. Sate Ayam, Mie Komplit, Nasi Bungkus. Everything is just so so rich in flavour and perfected.. which makes sense as I believe they have been there a while! Also feels homecooked and even my grandma likes it so it's a win win win on my list. Try it if you're looking for something new - you won't regret it!

this review is more of a 3.5. tldr: food is tasty but small portions for the prices that the elmhurst neighborhood offers. there is a sign that says "free drink for 5 stars review". service is good. there is about only 5 to 6 tables. venmo/zelle app only we ordered the following: - mie komplit $14 (dried noodle with wonton, dround meat) - thai iced tea $5 - coffee $3 - tahu gejrot $8.50 (tofu) - sate ayam $10.50 (chicken skewers) - salad daun teh hijau $11 (green tea salad) - nasi pecel ikan $18 (fried fish nasi) - mie goreng balacan $15.50 (stir fried noodles) - nasi padang bungkus $16 (beef nasi) ive been excited to try this place out for a while now. the food itself is tasty. great flavor for every dish, but if you take a look at the dishes, the portions are actually pretty small compared to what you would expect for those price points. the meat portion of the chicken skewer was like 1/2-1/3 the size of the skewers you get at a cart outside for $2. the tofu app had a great soy sweet vinegar sauce but it was small pieces. it looks big bc of the plating. the green tea salad was good (i would rec you try this if you want to try something unique). Per my friends feedback, the fried fish nasi dish needed some sauce since all the items were dried (tempuh, tofu, fish). the fried noodles was not spectacular. the mie komplit was a nice mellow umami flavor but i felt like they used subpar ingredients like the fishballs since there was no springiness to it. the fishball did not taste like there was "fish" in it (if that makes sense). the fried wontons had very little meat in them. the soup that comes with this dish was just a normal stock soup (nothing to comment on it). the beef nasi was the only one that came packaged in a banana leaf. it had different items like potato chips, beef, egg, and jackfruit. that was a unique dish but slightly high price point at $16 for the portion. there are alot of 5 stars reviews but please take into account that they have a sign that says "free drink for 5 star reviews n comments". service was nice. the server remeber all of our orders without writing things down. reminder that only venmo/zell/cash was available not a must try restaurant as there are other more "affordable" indo places, but the food was tasty

Food (5/5): Came as a group of four. I ordered the Nasi Iga Bakar (BBQ Short Ribs Indonesian Style) and we shared the Soto Mie (Indonesian Style Noodle Soup). As usual all the dishes were delicious. Only improvement would be that the Iga Bakar was better last time because there were more tender meat in the bone. Service (5/5): Friendly and helpful service. The servers were attentive and were open to chatting with us. Food came out reasonably fast and they were flexible in letting us check out the store across the street. Ambiance (4/5): Cozy restaurant with a comforting vibe. Not the nicest looking or decorated place but definitely a great spot to eat.

Batagor and nasi bungkus the two best things on the menu and honestly the two most unique things I've ever eaten. The nasi bungkus was a nice variety of spices carbs and protein, wrapped up in a banana leaf and cooked, enjoyed the variety of spices and items there. The batagor was a nice assortment of a variety of fried items that were smothered in peanut sauce, super interesting and really tasty. Overall I really enjoyed the sheer variety these two dishes gave, really gave me a different perspective of Indonesian food

The real Indonesian food all the food are amazing! They have the same restaurant in Philadelphia, and I wish they open another one in Manhattan. It's a small restaurant but the service is fast. If you want to try authentic indonesian food, I suggest you to visit this place.

A hole in the wall restaurant recommended to me by one of my Indo friends. He says this is where you go for authentic Indo food. We went and Ordered seafood noodle soup, skewers, and beef rendang rice platter. The sauce for the sweker was very good peanuty and sweet. The flavors for the beef rendang was there but the meat was too dry for our liking. The seafood egg noodle was decent but also a little bland for our liking. We also don't know how the food is traditionally made or enjoyed so please take our review with a grain of salt! Overall homey feel, they are cash or Zelle only though!

This place is legit. I went a few days ago, and everyone there was Indonesian. I got the fish, and my boyfriend got the beef rendang. I was slightly disappointed by the quantity of the rendang to be honest. I really enjoyed the fish with the sambal. It's hard to find authentic indonesian food in New York, so this made me happy and gave me a piece of home (I'm indonesian-american, but my family and church had always cooked meals). I got the es cendol as well, but that was too sweet for my liking honestly. Everything else was good. I would recommend. It's cash/zelle only!

Really authentic Indonesian food... They have great chicken and meat dishes... I don't eat pork... And I really don't eat meat... But my favorite was the fish as well as the chicken... Curries are delicious... Nice plate servings... Customer, attentive service and good pricing... Real nice place to come to to have "home Indonesian food"...

All their food is ALWAYS good! My favorite is the Soto Betawi and Sky's Soto for winter and the Beef Kwetiau and Rendang for the summer. Service is always good, the server is always very friendly and attentive. It's a small space, bot for a big group. With their Indonesian songs on repeat, you will feel like you're taken outside of New York and to Indonesia when you're there.

A friend had brought a group of us here to try Indonesian food (a first time for many of us). Being Indonesian herself, she mentioned that the food was authentic and a place she frequented. We ordered a variety of dishes (argh, missed a photo of the menu so I forget the names) ranging from curries to rice and noodles dishes. My favorite dish was pempek (fried fish cake)--the texture and flavor were such a great combo! Many of the flavors and textures of the dishes felt new and unique to me--all were surprisingly great! Usually, there's always a dish or two that seems off when ordering for big groups, but the food came out very timely, and the place really exceeded my expectations. The rest of our group had similar sentiments about the food, too! The interior is a tad small, but it feels homey, and the staff was really nice. There's a small restroom available. During the time we were there, the restaurant was pretty busy during a Tuesday night! I grew up in the area and can't believe I've discovered this spot now, but I'll definitely have to go back! Don't be fooled by the no-frills exterior. You gotta try the food for yourself!

Got take out from here after a friend had recommended it and very much enjoyed my meal! Despite getting the food delivered, it still tasted very fresh. The kari bihun was a curry noodle with thin rice noodles that were cooked nicely without being too mushy. The curry was aromatic with a prominent coconut flavor and a little more lime/citrus-flavor forward than other SEA curry broths I've had. Loved the bean curd and tofu products it came with. I don't eat a lot, but I did wish the portion was bigger. Appreciated how they separated the noodles from the soup. The Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng came with a very fragrant coconut rice with a good chunk of fried chicken. The chicken was a little too dry for me, but my partner enjoyed it. The anchovy and sambal sauce were the main highlights since it offered umami and spicy flavors simultaneously. I wanted to try their cendol so bad, but we forgot to order :/ Again, I was surprised at how good the food tasted for a quick take out meal.

Sky cafe seems like an authentic spot, I can tell there are a lot of regulars! The Nasi Lemak Rendang was pretty good and quite spicy. The portion is on the small side. I saw a lot of people eat the Nasi Bungkus so I would come again to try that! The seating is very limited. I came during off peak time and it was still full of customers.

We ordered delivery on a rainy day. Everything tasted delicious! Very authentic Indonesian food (according to my Indonesian friend who ordered the food). Here's what we ordered. Appetizer: Batagor (7.5/10) - assorted fried stuff (fish tofu, wonton, tofu, egg) in peanut sauce. It was great but didn't think it was special. Tempe Goreng (7/10) - personally not the biggest fan of tempe because of its unfamiliar texture. Perkedel (8.5/10) - made of mashed potato. very flavorful Main: Nasi Bungkus (9.5/10) - The best beef Randang i have ever had. Randang can be so dry but i was delighted to find the meat so flavorful and tender. Every bite was delicious. My friend ordered this dish and i'm jealous. Will order this all to myself next time. Nasi Campur Ayum Goreng (9/10) - Chicken was a little bit on the dry side but seasoned very well. Very delicious to eat with the potato side dish that i don't know the name of, and of course, vegetable curry. The spicy eggs with sambal are always my favorite Indonesia food. Wish they sell the eggs on the side. Desert: Es Teler (8/10) - tbh i was skeptical about this. coconut and avocado? But i was so shocked how great jt tastes! A bit on the sweet side but it helps cut down the spiciness of the food. Overall it was such a pleasant surprise! Looking forward to try more items on the menu!

Delicious Indonesian food! Came here for a date and enjoyed 2 appetizers dishes especially the beef on the skewers. My husband loved their beet soup and their rice dishes wrapped up in banana leaves. The place is small but their service is quick! They only accept cash or Zelle, no credit card.

Small place but visited by many patrons that appear to be Indonesian. There's only one server and he is not bored because he is non stop moving. Food is tasty. We ordered an appetizer called Botaga and it was delicious mainly because of the yummy peanut sauce. We ordered a beef and noodles dish which was also good. Our other dish was a veggie dish served with coconut shavings and rice. It was a bit too spicy for low tolerant spice eaters. Definitely tasted the coconut. Full house in a Saturday night and it was from 8p. They close at 9:30p.

My Indonesian friend took me and the fam here for lunch because I was craving Indonesian food and this was her favorite resto. It's a tiny cafe but they have their regulars and they're Indonesians (from what I can tell during the time we were there). They have a good variety of dishes (forgot to take pics of menu) and specials. For the four of us, I ordered way too much, because I have been waiting a long time for this meal! We had pempek, sate ayam, and Ketoprak to share. I got the nasi bungkus rendang, kid had nasi ayam goreng sambal ijo, hubs had nasi campur rendang, and my friend had nasi ikan balado. Eyes bigger than stomach, and there was not enough space on the table! The pempek was good. Not as good as the ones my mom and sister-in-law always orders from authentic Palembang sellers but good enough. The sate was tender, and the Ketoprak is like gado gado but with bee hoon instead of cabbage and veggies. The kid liked his fried chicken, the hubs enjoyed his rendang, and I inhaled everything in my nasi bungkus, which included a couple pieces of tender rendang, egg balado, perkedel, and I think jackfruit curry? I ate from the boys' plates and everything was yummy. Prices are reasonable for the portions. I think the lady who waited on us was also the one cooking and running the resto on her own! We took forever deciding/ordering coz we kept chatting, so I appreciate her patience! That meal kept us full all day!

Low-key feel, quick service, flavorful food for under $20/entree in 2023! Also, generous portions. My sis and I started with pempek, a fried fish cake in sweet spicy vinegar sauce from Palembang, South Sumatra. My nasi bungkus, true to its name, came wrapped in banana leaf. The beef rendang in it had just the right level of spicy (for a Malaysian ) and exemplified the darker and drier style (yet still moist on the inside) more common in West Sumatra, the home of this delicacy, than the Malaysian style I have most often. The lontong (compressed white rice cake) in the lontong sayur soaks up its rich yet balanced anchovy+coconut milk broth. Assorted veggies and krupuk contribute to a nice variety of texture and flavor. NOTE: As an Indonesian restaurant, peanuts and seafood are common ingredients/toppings and may not show up in every description. If you can't have them, let your server know as you order and they'll exclude it or advise you in the right direction.

Impressions: This is one of those gem restaurants that have to be recommended by a local, otherwise, you would never come here. I was lucky enough to know this because of an Indonesian friend. You will be satisfied. The staff is also very friendly. The food came quickly, and the waiter helped us to take group pictures. Food: The food is great, the rice is tasty, and the chicken's spiciness was not disappointing. I was just really surprised that how come there was not a line outside because the food is better than most of the restaurants on a busy street in Manhattan. I only tried a few dishes on the menu. After this experience, I definitely want to come back here and try more things on the menu.

I have passed by this spot a few times and each time I see it packed and this day it was not the exception. but thank God I didn't have to wait to eat. I had a few appetizers: Spring Rolls: Super tasty and crushing is a deep-fried roll stuffed with shrimp and served with sweet chili sauce. They were good. Fried Wonton: also served with sweet chili sauce. The sauce was super sweet the fried wonton was also stuffed with the meat very good super tasty the best plate of the day. For my main entree: I had the. Nasi Ayam Goreng Sayur Asem: fried chicken and tamarind soup served with rice, fried Tempe, and shrimp paste chili. I dint like the soup it had a funny taste but the fried chicken and rice were pretty good. The staff was super friendly and good.

Came a while ago and never got around to writing a review. Overall, had an enjoyable meal here (although I think I enjoyed my experience at Warung Selasa more, so would recommend checking them out if you want to try more Indonesian food!). We tried the nasi bungkus (the jackfruit was interesting as a savory element) and the lontong sayur. The space is small so best if you only come with 1-2 people.

Delicious and affordable Indonesian food! This place is small and has about 4-5 tables. We came on a Sunday morning at 11:30 and it was empty, but then filled up closer to lunchtime. Service was prompt and kind! We ordered: - Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng (Sky's Coconut Rice with Fried Chicken): This was my favorite of the two dishes. The rice was so flavorful and the fried chicken was crispy and not dry. The pickled vegetables and boiled egg with spicy sauce that it came with were great too. - Mie Komplit (Combination Egg Noodles): A solid noodle dish that came with a side of flavorful chicken broth. The soy sauce eggs in this dish were delicious. The noodles were great as well but I was more a fan of the rice and chicken platter above. Accepts credit cards with a minimum of $20 and a surcharge. Also, don't be alarmed if you get locked in the bathroom... They'll let you out!

This was my first time trying Indonesian food. It's a small cozy shop located in Elmhurst. We were welcomed immediately and seated. Service was extremely pleasant as my group and I asked for recommendations. We had no idea what anything was except for the Sate Ayam/ chicken skewers! I recommend the Nasi Bungus that's wrapped in leaves as well as Mie Komplit / combination egg noodle. The third dish (rice, chicken, cucumber, chip, sauce/soup?) on my attached photos though was a bit underwhelming. My friend had trouble eating the chicken as there was not much meat on it. Would like to go back to try some other dishes!

This is my first time eating at an "Indonesian" restaurant in the States. There aren't too many and when my friend suggested coming here for lunch to try it out, I was totally game. The restaurant is not too big-maybe about 5-7 tables. Looking over the menu, the food is very similar to Singaporean or Malaysian food which proved true once our food arrived. We ordered one rendang rice dish that came with pickled veggies, a fried egg, fried shallots and small fish. We also ordered a curry noodle which came with an assortment of fishballs and also a fried egg. Everything was very flavorful and tasty. Would definitely come back again. The avocado smoothie was yummy too. Only thing is the restaurant is FREEZING. No heat on at all.

Authentic Indonesian food, better than Asian Taste 86 a few doors down! Flavorful and tastefully presented. LOVED the Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng & Mie Komplit Combination Egg Noodles. Will definitely want to try most of their menu items. Acceps Credit card and has both indoor and outdoor (two 4-seater tables) seating.

Came here as a group of five. There was no wait, and we were seated immediately. Very causal spot. Everything was delicious, with kwetiau gor sapi, sates, batagor, and crab fried rice being standouts. Bill came out to $155 for 10 items., and we were all stuffed. Would recommend!

This place is a "hole in the wall" type of restaurant hidden in Elmhurst. When you first walk in, there's an immediate sense of authenticity. The server was very welcoming and provided us seats right away. Since it was my first time there, the server provided excellent recommendations. We got Ambience: 3.5/5 (small place that fits maybe up to 15 people) Service: 5/5 Food highlights: Nasi bungkus: 4/5: The flavors were amazing. It's a combination of rice, potatoes, and vary of proteins Nasi goreng: 5/5: Indo fried rice special. It was favorful and portion size was huge!

Small family like store. There were only one very efficient server cum cashier. Food were a little on the hit and miss. It's on the smaller side for portion aka Asians portion but with NYC price. I'd recommend to at least try once.

Flavors and presentation were on point. Staff was really nice and patient. Food came out quick. I'd go back for the desserts because you can't find them just anywhere. Homey, hole in the wall place for delicious Indonesian food! Came here with my bf on a Friday night because we we wanted to try! It's a small space, but the owner was super nice and reminded me of a proud grandpa who really wanted you to like his food! We had: - Homemade egg noodle special (5/5): They get their egg noodles handmade from someone in Philly (where the owner said their original restaurant is). This dish is served with a mix of minced pork/mushroom, egg, fried wontons, and some veg, with a side of chicken broth. This dish was very mushroom forward which I enjoyed, and tastes best with a splash of their home made chili sauce! The noodles had the perfect amount of bite and chewiness too! - Nasi bungkus (4/5): Banana leaf wrapped beef rendang, fried potato, chili chops, rice, braised kale, and egg. This was recommended by the owner and we really enjoyed! The beef was delicious as were all the other items wrapped in the banana leaf. - Seafood pan fried flat rice noodles (5/5): I was craving something similar to pad see ew, and was recommended this. SO GOOD! The wok was clearly extremely hot, and the fish balls provided the perfect bite. I really enjoyed this dish! Overall, a hole in the wall place for delish Indonesian food! I'm not super familiar with Indonesian food (and this is about my 2nd time eating it), but i really enjoyed my experience here!

This place is very close to where I live, but I've only started to come by here in the past year or so. The food has always been really good whenever we've come by here, and while I usually stick to their nasi sayur dish, it's been consistently good every time that I've been there. The partner will usually get their nasi lemak rendang, which he feels like is his favorite "new" dish in the area now. Portions are large, and service is prompt. I do wish there were more vegetarian dishes on the menu, but otherwise, this is a solid place to come by for a good comforting meal that won't break your budget.

3.5/5 Ordered the Nasi Bungkus with Rendang and Emie Noodles. Flavor wise the food was really really good. The balance of spicy and savory along with the salty rendang and fragrant rice in banana leaf was on point. The noodles in gravy were garlicky, sweet, citrusy, and flavorful. The only drawback was that we paid $30 for, in my opinion, a small portion of food. The Nasi bungkus only had a small chunk of meat and a few sides but lots rice. The noodles barely had noodles and only took a few bites to finish. Overall, I wouldn't come back unless the portions were more budget friendly

So delicious! I would go back right now, if I didn't just have a deliciously filled tummy full of rice noodles. It is so good and fresh. I enjoyed their noodle soups. I enjoyed the flavor, the service, and the indoor seating. It is quite cozy, so I wouldn't bring a shopping cart or tons of luggage. The waitstaff is good with answering questions and friendly. I like this place a lot! It has a good feel to it, and I highly recommend it if you like spicy.
