Where to Stop and Eat on the Drive From D.C. to Pittsburgh

"Come for the burgers, stay for the chicken-fried pickles and homestyle soups. This is a classic diner, with pies and prices to match, except for the fact that the hours are limited (right now, it closes at 3 p.m.)." - Missy Frederick

Google
We had an excellent experience at the Summit Diner. My sisters and I met for lunch - we each traveled from Pittsburgh, Carlisle, and State College. It was an excellent 50’s diner - reasonably priced food, quick service, delicious and plentiful food. Unfortunately, the lunch was too filling, so we couldn’t enjoy the Lemon or Coconut Meringue pies. Maybe, we will next time.

Google
Been coming here since I was a kid never been disappointed yet, lovely small town diner feel, good service , good value and some great tasting food you won’t be displeased where else can you get a appetizer two meals and drinks for under 35 dollars anymore? Much better then the pine grill across the street I suggest you make it a point to stop,,, just make sure you have cash available, also an atm located inside.

Google
Came here for the first time on May 4th 2024! Was a wonderful experience! The Service and staff are very attentive and the food is delicious!!

Google
There's not a better breakfast in Somerset for the value. Their sausage alone is worth the stop. Portions are bountiful, service is always efficient and that says alot about a place that usually has a line outside waiting to eat. The Diner experience is still very much alive in the Laurel Highlands because of this timeless treasure of deliciousness. Their burgers are great as well. And their dessert offerings will have you coming back for more!!

Susan Baranoff

Google
No waiting at 1pm. Friendly and attentive service in a quaint diner that's been here since the 1960s. The burgers were a little dry, but flavorful and getting the one with the egg on it made up for the dryness. I recommend the fries over the chips. They are out of pie for the day which was a disappointment. CASH ONLY, ATM on site.

Google
We stayed the night at Somerset on our way home passing through PA and decided to eat at this diner on our way out the next morning. I’m glad we did. Their food tasted amazing and their Arnold Palmer drink was really good as well. If youre into zucchini, you must try their fried zucchini (planks?) from their appetizers menu. They were REALLY good and the amount they give you was crazy. Enough to feel at least 6 people. We are making this area one of our stop points for future trips just so we can come back and eat here.

Google
Classic diner with great food. When you’re here you definitely get the community vibe. This is also one of those rare places where scrapple is on the menu. So if you love that you have to give this place a try.

Google
We stopped here for breakfast this morning and it was great! The staff was so kind and the food was delicious. Just a heads up it's cash only. Would highly recommend!

Bob H.

Yelp
Breakfast was very good, pies were reported to be the best but low selection prevented us from rating. Parking is hard to enter. Restaurant appeared to be clean.

Yelp
SOS was runny and had no taste plus barely any chipped beef. I was not the only person in my party that agrees. Potatoes horrible Sausage patties were so salty I couldn't eat. Terrible food! Should have went to McDonalds for breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
A+ service. Very nice waitresses. A lot of parking out back. Fairly clean, for a diner. Really mediocre food. Looks like stellar menu but everything seems undercooked and very lacking in flavor. Cash only. They have an ATM inside.

Yelp
Phenomenal staff. Mouthwatering menu. Old school charm. What more do you Want from a diner? This place had a hot meatloaf sandwich that will buckle your knees. Their burgers looked incredible... although I resisted. Their mashed potatoes and gravy.... Flawless. Waitress sold me on a slice of burnt sugar gob cake. Yeah, it's that damn good. I'd stop here off the turnpike just to get another slice of that cake again. You have to try this place while crossing the state, it's worth every penny!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Went to eat there. Small line outside. When we went inside, attendant "yelled" at us to go back outside; plenty of room in the vestibule. Very rude! Will never stop here again. Food and service was nice a year ago, last time we went there. Pity.

Yelp
We rolled into the parking lot with our fat F350 truck and parking was easy. Walking in the diner reminded me of those cute 1950's diners. Bright, shiny, and clean. Our wait person was kind and personable. She brought our delicious coffee post haste. We ordered a breakfast burrito, a breakfast skillet, along with a half order of biscuits and gravy to share. It came out in a surprisingly timely fashion as it was moderately busy. When I commented on that the wait person commented that it was a slow morning due to hunting season -- so the cooks were having a quicker turnaround today! Our food was perfect. The breakfast burrito was huge, fresh, not greasy at all, and I took half of it with me. The breakfast skillet also huge, the bacon inside was crispy and the potatoes were tender with just the right crunch. The scrambled eggs, peppers, and onions were not overcooked but delectable. Now the sausage gravy and biscuits ... oh my! Fresh and flaky homemade biscuits. The sausage was their homemade recipe with good tasting spices in it. The gravy was not thick and lumpy just smooth and dreamy. All together it was a good tasting reminder of good down home cooking!

Yelp
Food was outstanding and worthy of the line. Small places are the best. Don't forget to swing over and remember the hero's of Flight 93 that wouldn't put up with terror and made the ultimate sacrifice. Food is good time too.
google avatar

Amber V.

Yelp
Love the diner vibe. Our waitress was very friendly, the gob cake was so good! Cash only!!
google avatar

Barry B.

Yelp
Usually a wait to get in on weekends. If you like scrapple the scrapyard breakfast is a good bet. It is an old stainless steel diner and has the look and feel that you would expect. They only accept cash, but there is an ATM on site.
google avatar

Rebecca M.

Yelp
An actual diner! The food was extremely good, and I couldn't help to think that we took a step back in time. My husband loved his roast beef sandwich, and my salad was very good as well. BUT the best part was the homemade desserts, we had a hard time choosing one, but I'm thankful we decided on coconut cream pie, it was fantastic!
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
What a diner should be. Super clean, authentically retro decor, friendly and efficient service, and great diner food. I got there at 1:45 on a Sunday and they usually close at 3, but they were closing at 2 that day - no problem, they said, come on in, and they took care of me very well. One caveat for disabled folks, the restroom access is tough with a narrow hallway and no grab bars. Otherwise, five stars, will go back again soon.
google avatar

Yelp
I haven't had anything bad here Pies and desserts good. The Goober burger REALLY is good. Try it Servers are nice. Eating here makes you feel like you would be ok to wear a poodle skirt and saddle shoes I don't like they advertise their politics I don't feel it's appropriate for a business wanting business
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
A nice little hometown diner, very eclectic with a lot of great music memorabilia, Great coffee, but the food is just average.
google avatar

Thomas P.

Yelp
We had breakfast - bacon, eggs, hash browns and toast . Everything was ok, nothing extraordinary. The waitress was attentive and the food arrived quickly.

Karina G.

Yelp
Great place for a greasy but good breakfast. Lots of locals. Found this place while driving through PA.

Yelp
Meh! All the hype here, we decided to stop for lunch. Food was SO bland, I'm not a salter but had to add salt, pepper, and ketchup to eat the meatloaf-very like hospital food. Waitresses were curt but quick. Wouldn't waste my time.

Charles T.

Yelp
My son was returning home from boy scout camp and his request was to go back to the Summit Diner. He loves this place! As do I. I grew up in Somerset and have been going to the Summit Diner since I was a kid. All of the food there is delicious, especially the gob cake, which my wife absolutely enjoys. I enjoy telling my family the history of the Summit Diner and of the many celebrities who have eaten there in the past, most notably former Vice President Mike Pence and rock singer Billy Idol. We will continue eating there in the future any time we are in Somerset. The only thing I wish about the place is that they would have longer hours like they used to have when I was a kid.
google avatar

Samantha P.

Yelp
The food is quite bland and not palate pleasing at all. I can appreciate being a busy place, but it wouldn't kill the service staff to be kind of friendly. The foot reminds me of hospital cafeteria food.

Yelp
I love Summit Diner! It's my pit stop between drives from the Mid-Atlantic to the Midwest. I make my husband plan our road trips around this spot! Why, you ask? I love open-face Turkey Sandwiches with gravy and mash potatoes. It's a comfort food item, that reminds me of my childhood. I grew up with rice as our main staple and this dish I only got by going to diners with my parents. The servers here are so sweet. I also ask them to blanket my sandwich with all the yummy warm gravy. Once, they didn't have mash potatoes ready because I ordered this dish in the morning, so I replaced it with crispy hash. Hello! That's a game changer. Now I'm torn between which potatoes to get on every visit. Don't leave this diner without Chocolate Gob Cake, take it to go if you must. Trust me! You will see a lot of locals dining here, don't be alarmed if they stare, just smile until they smile back. Besides, nothing is coming between me and my gravy plate of carbs and that yummy Gob Cake!

Yelp
We stopped at Summit during a road trip. I opted to wear my mask into the diner - we didn't know before we walked in that this place very aggressively pushes its politics into its customers' faces. I was the only person in the place wearing a mask but, to their credit, nobody said anything to me or even looked at me sideways. My scrambled eggs & toast and the man's Philly chicken wrap were both good (I appreciated that they cooked my eggs super well done, just the way I like them). Staff was friendly to us despite my mask LOL. As noted in other reviews, come with cash because they don't accept credit cards (guessing another reviewer is probably right about the reason why!). We're giving Summit Diner 3 stars - they lost a couple because they don't take credit cards (who carries cash in 2022??) AND because their signage is so confrontational, which seems unnecessary when all you're doing is serving food.

Yelp
The line was long when we got there around 11am on a Saturday, and I can see why! Service was quick and staff was friendly and the menu had plenty of vegetarian-friendly options. The Belgian waffles with strawberries and whipped cream and an omelet made for the most delicious breakfast I have ever had! We went back again the next day during our time near town.

Edward O.

Yelp
Went to summit diner for breakfast with three other men. Everyone left a empty plate. Enough said. Restaurant takes CASH ONLY
google avatar

Jessica F.

Yelp
Diners, in my opinion, can either be a delightful way to indulge those greasy food desires or a totally forgettable experience. This was the latter. Three stars because it doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. Food is cheap and portions are generous. Mediocre coffee. Sausage and eggs were pretty good but home fries weren't even salvageable with lots of ketchup. Excellent service! I wouldn't go out of my way to come here but it's a diner and does the trick.

Yelp
Today, November 28, 2022, my wife and I decided to stop at the Summit Diner for a late lunch. We arrived at 2:28 and walked in the door. We were greeted by a female waitress who told us, "we are closed." I said the sign out front says, "open 7 - 3." I looked at my watch and it was 2:29. A male employee came out from behind the counter and reiterated that they were closed. He said, "we just shut off the grill and we need to hang Christmas decorations." Have you ever heard of "customer service?" Maybe the signage out front needs to be updated with "open 7 - 2:30." I doubt other eateries treat their patrons this way. What lousy service to the Somerset community! I will be sure and share my experience with other family members and friends. The Summit Diner was a huge disappointment for us!

Yelp
Authentic, good food, reasonable prices. Smiling service. I hope to come back next time I'm in town.

Yelp
Gotta love an old fashioned diner. Like a time machine it transports you back to the good ole days. The decor alone... Looks like everybody knows everybody in here. But don't feel left out, as a total stranger passing through and sitting at the counter by myself, staff and customers made an effort to include me. Thank you for that. Reading the 'bad' reviews, seems like the expectations of other were much higher. Well, it's a diner, you're not going to get fine dining treatment here. Yes they ask you to wait outside the door, but it is indoors like a lobby. When they have a spot for you, they will seat you, or at least tell you where to go. To those that gripe that there were empty seats, well we are in the age of social distancing and also staffing shortages... just saying. But let's get to the awesome part: The food... I was hungry and ordered a big breakfast... Oh dear... other customers were laughing at my face when I ended up with several huge plates in front of me. Enough to feed a family, hot and delicious. Yeah I ended up taking half of it with me. Endless coffee is always nice too an I tend to take full advantage of it. There was even a pie case. Pies piled high and looking delicious. Unfortunately I had eaten too much already and didn't feel like carrying around a pie. Next time I come through here, I will have a pie first.

Yelp
We stopped here for a quick lunch on our way through PA. We were sooooo happy we drive a few minutes off the interstate to come here instead of going to a highway rest stop for some fast food. Simply put, this little diner is awesome!!! Very friendly service. I ordered a double cheeseburger with veggies and fries for only $8! The burger was juicy and not overly greasy or dripping with oil. Vegetables were fresh and plentiful. Fries were crisp. Can't ask for much more than that for a nice hot and quick lunch. They had many lunch special options that I saw other customers order and they looked delicious and very generous portions. It looked like mostly locals here when we stopped for lunch. Overall, very pleased with our visit, food, and service received. I'd definitely stop again if I'm in the area and would recommend others as well.

Yelp
We were traveling through on our way home. We live in a mask mandatory area and entered the diner in masks. The hostess told us to stand outside and she would seat us "if we have any booths available" (there were at least 4 empty booths). One of the customers at the counter started heckling us about our masks while his buddies laughed and the staff just stood there. Strongly any-vaxx, anti-mask establishment with no distancing. We moved on to a different restaurant.

Courtney A.

Yelp
Such great food! Quick service and amazing workers! I highly recommend going there. The hours are I think odd though. Which is my only complaint.
google avatar

Beth E.

Yelp
Passing through town and saw this little diner and we had to stop. Very busy on Memorial Day at 11:30, but fortunately we found a table for 4 within minutes. The inside is cute and appeared very clean. All the servers were very friendly. I liked that we could order breakfast or lunch. I had the grilled chicken salad and it was very good. Ingredients were fresh and the toppings were plentiful. Everyone else had breakfast and they were all happy with their choices. Desserts looked very good, but we were all too full to try one. Prices are typical of a restaurant of this type and this was a good stop.
google avatar

Jack C.

Yelp
Very disappointed with the server and the meal. Four of my family went out to have breakfast together. After waiting 30 minutes, our cold breakfast arrive. Not only was it cold but the French toast slices looked as if the resturant used the thinnest and cheapest white bread they could find. My Eggs, potatoes and bacon were also cold. BUT THE CROWNING GLORY WAS OUR SERVER KIM L, SHE HAD THE WORST ATTITUDE I HAVE EVER SEEN..SHE REALLY DIDN'T CARE. In my opinion I will never go back and will not recommend this dinner

Noah V.

Yelp
Best breakfast in the state hands down. Cash only. Highly recommend. Old school diner, 5/5

Kalli H.

Yelp
Best burger ever!! Lots of choices - prices very reasonable for the amount of food you get. Cozy atmosphere, hometown diner with quality food. Wait staff was great, friendly and efficient. Cash only restaurant with ATM IN THE RESTAURANT. Yum! I hope I get a chance to go there again someday. We stopped off from the turnpike to visit the Flight 93 Memorial. It was on the way back to the turnpike.
google avatar

Greg E.

Yelp
Atmosphere - good. If one were looking for a diner to use as a depiction for Webster's or Wikipedia, this would be a stellar example. There s a life nag counter seating area that would accommodate around 12 patrons. Four-top booths are set around the perimeter. I did not get the small town, welcoming vibes from most restaurants of its type, but that may be due to our arrival at a very busy time of day. Service - decent. Although our server was pressing us to order shortly after we sat down, the server was attentive and pleasant. Food - very good. The menu is fairly broad and although we arrived around noon, we had the option of ordering breakfast or lunch items. I enjoyed my order of scrambled eggs, sausage patties (two huge pieces), hash browns and French toast. Value - very good. Prices are very reasonable. Although I have had better diner experiences, this restaurant is well worth considering.
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
Best breakfast spot ever. Food is beyond reasonably priced. The service is always great. Just love it.
google avatar

Becca H.

Yelp
Pretty decent diner right off the PA turnpike. It's small and dated, but that's what you'd expect from a diner. Service was quick and friendly. I got an omelette with American cheese, sausage, and mushrooms. You could tell the mushrooms were from a can. The omelette wasn't well seasoned either. But overall it was a pretty typical diner experience.
google avatar

Kimberly P.

Yelp
Great little dinner, staff and owner great full for your business. Endless coffee at breakfast and breakfast dishes are FABULOUS! Will stop every time we pass through.
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
Good food, good price, good service!! We even took a coffee cup home as a reminder of this fun place! Note... we bought it didn't steal it!

Cecilia R.

Yelp
I only give 4 stars because of their hours. They used to be a 24-hour diner, then scaled back to 11pm or midnight; now they're only open until 2 or 3. Miss being able to go for dinner or late-night breakfast. Great diner food, they have an in-house butcher, and fantastic desserts/gob cake.

Sallie C.

Yelp
The food was mostly bland and unsatisfying. The chili was pretty good, but that was it. The hamburger buns were so stale that they were inedible The vegetable soup was incredibly tasteless. There was no seasoning at all - not even salt. We were excited, because we always love diner food. This time, not so much. Also, I would skip the gob cake, unless you like an oil flavored dessert.
google avatar

Sharon R.

Yelp
Classic diner with a sense of humor and very reasonable prices. Fresh, delicious coffee and someone to refill it as needed. Delicious pancakes and sausage. Pies that were so good we had to order dessert after breakfast! Terrific service with servers attentive to cleanliness. Definitely on my travel list for future trips in southwestern PA.
google avatar

Brenda F.

Yelp
Great service and great food highly recommended sometimes a line on Saturday and Sundays

Brandie S.

Yelp
2 breakfast sandwiches, 2 orders of home fries, 2 pancakes, 2 eggs & a chocolate milk - $20.60. The service was friendly, and incredibly quick. We were in and out in 35 minutes. Perfect little stop, right off the turnpike.
google avatar

Ruth Elisa F.

Yelp
We came from out of town to visit for the weekend and stumbled across this diner, HOLY SMOKES the best breakfast food I've had on a very long time. The waffles were hands down the best I've ever had! 10/10 recommend!

Cindy M.

Yelp
Average food, served hot. Great place for breakfast or a burger. We dined here during the pandemic (wearing a masks) which was quite entertaining. As other reviewers say, they are very much anti-vax and anti government. So much so that they decide that they won't take credit cards and I am guessing it is so their cash sales can be reported as they see fit. Reporting sales tax to the government, I am guessing, is not on their priority list. LOL Initially they had signs everywhere explaining that the. Refit card machine was "broken" and that due to COVID, parts were "still on the ship from China." Fast forward to today, when the sign simple states Cash Only. No explanation. Go figure. We'll keep going back for the cheap eats and entertainment.
google avatar

Rhona C.

Yelp
We eat breakfast there had their homemade sausage and eggs with short stack. It was all good. Friendly service and we liked the dinner atmosphere.

Jamie H.

Yelp
Awesome food. Old style looks inside like pt cruiser car.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
We like going to old diners. But this place doesn't know how to make an omelet like seriously. They dont cook the vegetables with the egg! They make the egg and put the meat and vegs on top and fold the egg.... they just heat the vegs and meat in a microwave. Is that how you make an omelet at home? O.o Also no masks so they dont care about your health. Just pass and save yourself.
google avatar

Derek P.

Yelp
Second time and yet again didn't disappoint. Busy lunch time yet service was friendly and prompt. Breakfast was delicious, be sure to get their house made sausage. This is definitely a spot to eat at passing through.

Maria M.

Yelp
Busy (popular) small, diner that served us fast, tasty, hearty breakfast. Service was STELLAR. Coffee was good. Prices very reasonable. A bit discouraging outside the facility but much better inside! Cash only. They make their own sausage. The waitress didn't miss a beat -attentive and 100% efficient. Service with a smile. Love that dirty plates were cleared from table promptly, and quick coffee refills.
