Seattle Opens New Round of Small Business Grants Totaling $4 Million - Eater Seattle

"Mini chain Sumo Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi — which has locations in Wenatchee and Moses Lake — has arrived in town, per Capitol Hill Seattle. The restaurant takes over the Broadway Alley spot recently vacated by beloved sushi spot Ha Na, which closed in August after more than 30 years. It’s unclear how much dine-in service will be emphasized versus takeout, but when at a fuller capacity, Sumo promises to be a lively spot, since the other locations have chefs showing off their knife skills over hibachi grills, with a menu that covers most of the sushi basics. The current outposts in Central Washington seem to have regularly gotten high marks on Yelp from customers." - Gabe Guarente

My fiancé and I were craving sushi really late at night and this was one of the few restaurants open. The food was SO good and flavourful and pretty fast delivered. We would definitely drive all the way from Renton to eat there again!

I am visiting Seattle’s vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood with my friend and we came across a Japanese fusion restaurant. As someone with very severe allergies to most nuts and sesame, I am skeptical of East Asian food in general. I got the karaage chicken and the beef rice bowl. This was the best Japanese food I’ve ever had in a very long time. The meat was very delicious and flavorful. Normally when it comes to Japanese food, I only get ramen or miso soup since these are the safest options for me. This time I had something different and I was highly impressed. The staff was also super awesome. When I explained them my allergies, they were very careful that there was no cross contamination. They genuinely cared about their customers. This is probably my most favorite restaurant in Capitol Hill.

I stopped in here on Saturday afternoon for lunch. It was not very busy, and I was able to order right away. The food was prepared quickly, and came out looking great. The Japanese yakisoba w chicken had a great taste and texture, but it left some to be desired with lack of ingredients. A few small things added in would elevate the dish. The sushi was fresh and tasted great, although it could be better at the price per roll. There is an incentive to buy two rolls and get a better deal, but that would have been too much food. The atmosphere was chill. I would eat here again for lunch.

Google
The food was very unsatisfactory and very cheap, the shushi burrito chicken dinner taste like a McDonalds McChicken the portions are a lot smaller then the photos they show, the teriyaki beef bento box meat was way to thick and taste like cheap freezer burnt meat, the sushi was absolutely disgusting the and the teriyaki chicken bento box meat was very grisly and not lean at all, made my mom very nauseous after eating it service at the restaurant was decent, wan g looked very tired and seems out of it, the ambiance was nice inside, on the street I heard someone complain about it saying it’s “nowhere close the bb’s teriyaki”, which in my opinion is decent, today we called asking for a refund and we were told “no Since nobody else complained about the food we can not offer a refund” the only good thing was the rice

Google
This is such a great place to eat! I just ordered the fried chicken appetizer...AGAIN! Seriously though, it's probably the 4th time in one week! I have tried many things here, though, and everything is super high quality, true Japanese cuisine, unique, yet incredible flavors, and fresh, too! None of that popular practice of cooking a lot of the food, freezing it, and then reheating to serve. It's very filling as well because the servings are perfect, especially if you want leftovers! The people who work here and run the place are kind, funny, and very helpful! There are a lot of people there at times, but you never have to wait long! The to go bags are great because they actually come sealed. So, rest assured, your food will be safe and warm until you get home!

Google
i ordered last night and my order just kinda....never got made, and it turns out there was some sort of power outage. Getting that knowledge was complicated, but I'll leave that aside because I order from this place often. It's good food. I recommend the salmon rolls and the snow crab roll.

Google
Im surprised at some of the negative reviews. I get that the atmosphere wasn’t perfect, but I didn’t think it was enough to even take it down 1 star. For me it hit all the spots a normal/good restaurant should, good price, good food, good service, its just that while in there it was quiet and had a bit of a weird vibe, but can’t complain too much.

Google
Ordered two rolls, an Alaskan roll and a spicy salmon roll. Both of them were great, but I was halfway through my spicy salmon roll when I noticed something off- there was tempura inside of the spicy salmon roll. I have celiac and can’t eat gluten, so this means I couldn’t finish my roll and could have (but thankfully didn’t) get sick. There is nowhere on the menu that indicates that there is tempura in any of the spicy rolls, so I made the assumption that it was safe for me to eat. I know I could have been more conscious myself and made sure it was safe, but I’ve also never seen tempura inside of a spicy roll before. All in all, this should have been stated on the menu, and if you are dining here as someone with allergies, make sure that the food you order is actually safe for you. Disappointing that this happened, but now I know for if I ever come back.

Yelp
Yum! This place was so, so good! We ordered the pork katsu don and a teriyaki chicken bento box with a california roll, rice, and shumai. The pork katsu was soooo crispy and delicious, Absolutely great comfort food, everything was so good!

Yelp
The front guy was very friendly and helpful. I love love the Togo bag. Whoever designed it needs a raise. The food was good and I was satiated. I found my new Togo sushi place

Yelp
You get what you pay for- at 13.99 (9.99 with the summer promo) I got a good amount of sushi but the roll I got (Rocky Roll) said nothing about being fried and wasn't very flavorful. Not necessarily BAD and we were just looking for something fast & open which is what we got, but def not worth another visit

Yelp
GOOD!! good food at good price yummy in my tummy. VERY NICE SERVICE. I would definitely recommend if you live sushi

Yelp
We got take out when I was visiting my daughter in Seattle. I don't usually buy sushi except for special occasions. This restaurant almost ruined my holidays. The sushi rolls they gave us was old and brown. It looked like they made it the day before. Not good tasting. The wasabi was only two very small packets despite having ordered 4 rolls. And the pickled ginger they gave us actually tasted like mold. Not a little bit. It was so moldy I had to spit it out into my napkin. We spent $50 on a holiday meal to celebrate the little time we have together, and this restaurant sold us some shit in a box. It was horrible and these people have no idea what service means. What a selfish thing to do to your customers. They should be shut down.

Yelp
Frequently order takeout from here and have never been disappointed. I work the night shift in healthcare and Sumo is always open late. The steak bowl is my go-to order with the yum yum sauce. Also highly recommend the ninja roll! It's def a caucasian deep-fried sushi roll but its DELICIOUS! 10/10

Yelp
My boyfriend and I got our order delivered via Postmates and everything arrived super quickly. The fried foods were still hot, and the seafood was still fresh and amazing. We got the yummy roll meal with a side of tuna tataki for $22.95. The tuna tataki was savory due to the light sear and little bit of pepper on top. I found the addition of mango to raw fishes (tuna, salmon, and yellowtail) to be super refreshing and that it surprisingly compliments the taste of the sea. The yum yum sauce was creamy yet refreshing, completing and balancing the taste of the whole roll. We actually ordered extra of that sauce to dip the chicken karaage, which was in a promotion for only $1.95. The chicken was juicy and tender on the inside while the exterior was nice and crunchy despite having been delivered. We also got a BOGO deal for the fried california rolls (6pc), so we were able to get 12 pieces for only $8.45! We were able to get enough food to fully feed two people for just $30 due to promotions, but even without it, I thought the prices were decent. Fresh and delicious, I'd recommend!

Yelp
Food was okay . The biggest issue and only reason I'm writing this is because the Driver showed up at my job ... I didn't order anything he showed up at the location he delivered my food to 24 hours later . Very creepy . He kept saying I called him which I didn't and I'm sure that's against policy . I couldn't reach out to the manager or your employees are covering your drivers ass . HIS NAME IS YUSUF IT HAPPENED 02/05/25 .

Yelp
Food - for a small little place in this little mall, I was really impressed. The Jade roll was really fresh and they had a ton of vegetarian options! Very tasty! Service - very speedy and polite! Ambiance - casual and clean. Minimalist and modern with options for a table or take out.

Yelp
Oh how the mighty have fallen. I know that Covid was rough on small businesses. I have no idea what this place has been through. It used to be a sweet little grungy kinda sushi restaurant where you could get really solid Japanese food. Sushi, sashimi, teriyaki...it had atmosphere and attentive wait staff. Kick ass miso soup and hot tea on a cold day. Now: led light strips flashing a variety of colors to the rhythm of the crappy pop music blaring through the joint. Wooden tables and ceramic dishes replaced by white laminate and plastic dishes. Soy sauce and wasabi served in single use packets for dine-in service. Food was mediocre. Shrimp tempura roll was soggy and beef teriyaki was gristly and did not taste like teriyaki at all. I think if I'd ordered delivery from here I wouldn't have been disappointed as much. Also- card payment defaults to an 18% tip which feels kinda crazy in a place where you order from the counter, there are no dishes to wash and there's no table service. So sad to see this change.

Yelp
We ordered door for delivery. I am watching my sodium intake, do this was a refreshing experience. The chicken was tender, sushi was nice and fried shumia was yummy. The preparation and packaging was great service for our delivery with condiments included ginger, low sodium soy sauce and wasabi. I have not been to this location, but it is a great place to order for delivery LadyFlava of LadyFlavaNews

Yelp
Pros open late Cons everything else This place is definition of mid. Rolls saucy a f as expected to cover up cheap ingredients. This place has lowest quality fish ive seen in WA. They definitely get their tuna from Walmart. I got a spicy tuna hand roll it and it was salmon color did not taste like tuna or salmon. The tuna they put in my tuna hand roll did not look safe to eat.
google avatar

Yelp
The food got a lot worse than when it first opened. Chicken Karaage looked like regular chicken, not crispy. Unagi bowl didn't look like the 2021 photo anymore.
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
Not bad for a quick Japanese fast food restaurant! They're is a variety of items on the menu. We tried the salmon don and the gyudon. Both were prepared fairly quickly and the quality wasn't bad! The rice to protein ratio was high but everything was tasty and simple.
google avatar

Yelp
While I have never visited the restaurant, they have delivered no less than ten meals to me via Uber Eats. I first tried them because of a 2 for 1 special they had and now find then an affordable delight at a fair price for Seattle. The delivery is always packaged with all the necessities (soy sauce, wasabi, ginger, chopsticks, etc) that you would need when dining in your hotel room. Deliveries have always been fast to the hotels as this location is central to downtown Seattle. Definitely worth a shot.

Yelp
Late night best spot around seattle. Foods always good not to mention price very affordable for the portions. Great customer service always on point with those sushi rolls. After 11 pm this is a great spot for late night craving

Yelp
SOOOOO delicious! Ordered takeout from this spot. Food was ready quickly and packaged perfectly! The rolls are small but very well made and yummy. Got the Seahawk ($11.95) and the Snow Crab ($11.95) Rolls, and the Unagi Don ($12.95). ALl super fresh and delicious. Seems to be a small place with limited seating inside.

Yelp
I ordered takeout via Door Dash tonight to claim a promotion and decided to try this place out. Unfortunately it was overall very middle ground. The food did seem fresh with the fried roll still warm and the cold rolls still chilled but the quality of the fish and attention to detail were lacking. The sweet heart roll in particular was extremely fishy tasting which shouldn't be the case with crab and lobster which should both have a cleaner, subtle taste. I did not eat more than a bit, which is hard to look past at $15 a roll. I'm not sure if they use different crab, but the Snow Crab Roll was much better, no fishy flavor only crab. Finally I got the Mini Sumo Roll and the roll itself was great, but the toppings were piled so sloppily it was like my roll was drowning in sauce and crunch. I scraped off 80% of the topping and could finally taste a balance between the roll and toppings. Overall I think the rolls need more care for the prices and I'd only recommend this restaurant if I knew they'd slowed down their assembly and taken more care to ensure fresh ingredients.

Yelp
I have been here a few times now and thoroughly enjoyed everything here. It's not the best food yo eaten but the quality exceeds the price you pay. Karaage chicken - these are sooo plump and tender inside and very flavorful. The outside is a little tough but not bad. Also, they have promotions right now where you can get these for $1. Normally, it would be $5 which is still very reasonable as well. Unagi bowl - another great deal. A typical unagi bowl at most places can cost you around $15-$16. The bowls here are around $12. And the flavor and texture is all there. I love the flavor, it worked really well with the soft rice Takoyaki - standard, nothing really special Tuna tataki - this was surprisingly good. It's not as thick cut as most places but the flavor and quality is there again. I usually don't like rice but I was hoping to have rice to go with it. They could make a rice bowl with this and I would buy it. Onigiri - this is a new item on their menu and I thought it was a little pricey. They are super cute and very simple. One of them had seaweed and one of them has crayfish. They were good but I don't think I would pay more than $5 for them. Overall, this place will be a go to for a quick lunch and sushi in capitol hill.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I ordered takeout with a delivery service as we were exhausted from the convention and we were pleasantly surprised with how delicious all the entrees we got here. We ordered some rolls, chicken kaarage, coconut shrimp, curry bowl, and chicken fried rice. We were amazed at how delicious all the food was and literally stuffed ourselves. Unfortunately we had leftovers and didn't have a microwave so we had to trash it. This will be a great place to grab takeout for future conventions or whenever we are staying at Seattle.

Yelp
This is a simple place. I like to come here to get away from all the madness. Prefect for a different, but simple date night meal. There arent any crazy bars or picked dining rooms here. You have enough elbow room to not even notice the others dining. If the place where Sunday packed you would still have enough room to enjoy a private date. You do however have to order at the front counter and seat yourself. The portions are fairly small, but it is on the cheaper side for sushi in the area. This is not my go to fit sushi at all... well I do think their handroll menu is probably my favorite I've had the pleasure of ordering from. If you want to go on a date and have good and simple food that won't break the pockets, this is your place. Unless it's happy hour, I think you can find better deals on sushi at other restaurants for happy hour. Either way, this place gets my vote! I love coming here. 4.5 for me.

Yelp
Fresh and good food. The service was great. Our food came out hot and fast. They do offer public restooms.

Yelp
Affordable and fresh The karaage is great especially for its price Seahawk is spicy 7/10
google avatar

Yelp
cheap sushi and open late in capitol hill! they have great deals and decent sushi! workers are efficient and sushi is definitely worth the price.
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
Horrible food unless you get sushi. All other food is horrible. Order sushi, if not then don't bother.

Rolando B.

Yelp
I loved the miso soup taste. They do have a lot of different varies of sushi as well as other entries. Drove from seattle and it was well worth the trip

Yelp
This is no nobu but in a time of sushi craving this place did not disappoint. I visit Seattle often, particularly Cap hill and every time I leave back home,my sister and I do a sushi feast to send me off. And let me tell you ! For $100 worth of sushi you can feed 4 people easily! We on the other hand scarfed down everything between the 2 of us! Good service,Friendly staff. Def recommend
google avatar

Hebe L.

Yelp
I think this place used to be Hana sushi managed by an old couple. I used to came here a lot. They renovated the interior, this place looks more organized and brighter. It became more modern. I ordered a combo! The sushi roll was okay. Takoyaki is warm and delicious! The server was nice.
google avatar

Rowyn H.

Yelp
My go to sushi restaurant on the hill. Sumo is incredibly fresh considering their price points are so modest! My order is usually ready 5-10 mins after the arranged pick up time but it's always worth it to have fresh, large portions (-: they are also open late which is a huge plus.

Sassie E.

Yelp
Trash people they don't care about your safety or health. Do NOT recommend. They clean stuff off the floor and don't clean there hands.
google avatar

Valerie Y.

Yelp
Sumo is a great place for quick, amazing-quality sushi in Cap Hill! I've gone twice for dinners with friends after events, and I have never been disappointed. The first time, I ordered a tuna roll and a salmon hand roll - both around $6, pretty good prices. I was blown away by the salmon hand roll, which had a great amount of fish that tasted AMAZING. The second time I decided to get two salmon hand rolls and I was again very pleased :) Their fish is super fresh and the staff is very friendly. Whenever I come in with a group, they make sure to give us water bottles with our orders and help us rearrange the tables so we can all sit together! I'll definitely be coming back, if not for their amazing hand rolls, to try their other food.
google avatar

Harley M.

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick bite since they were one of the only places open late for food on a weekend. I got a salmon roll with avocado and cucumber. It was $6 and a great late night snack. My roommate has been getting the hot food there and he's a big fan. Maybe I'll have to come back and try that.
google avatar

Paul D.

Yelp
Easy ordering online. All sushi was really good. The menu is pretty typical and all was ready on time as promised.
google avatar

Ross A.

Yelp
MAD DEALS HERE Gyudon, gyoza, drink and with $2 karaage for a total of $23 after tax. Why the hell would you eat at Dick's Drive-In when Sumo is open until 12:30am? "Muh precious greasy bag of dicks, hurrr durrrr, Seattle burrrrrger from the 50s"
google avatar

Eugene C.

Yelp
Ordered the curry chicken don through Door Dash. The portion size was generous even without the side order of shu mai (Door Dash required to order a combo plate with side dish/drink). A lot of grilled chicken over rice. The curry sauce on the side was good but there wasn't enough to cover all of the rice/chicken (more sauce please, or option to add extra sauce!) . The shu mai was (I think) mostly fish cake which was super fishy-tasting. There were tons of other side order options so I'll probably order a different side dish next time. It looks like there are tons of other options in general. The menu is huge!
google avatar

Seungwon K.

Yelp
I ordered this food to go so I can't speak for the ambiance, and this is strictly based on the food. The portion size was quite small even though I'm a small person, and the pricing was not cheap. Sushi quality was average-low, with lacking ingredients and tasteless fish. Would not visit again.
google avatar

Dewayne P.

Yelp
I had the gyudon bowl which is thinly sliced beef, green onions, egg yolk (no white), over white rice. I'd say this dish was good, the taste was pretty nice and I didn't need to use any soy sauce. The only problem is the quantity of the meat. I would have hoped for about 20-30% more beef than what they actually gave. The service was good since I just had it to go. It seemed like everyone was ordering food to go, especially with delivery services.
google avatar

Nguyen Q.

Yelp
This is a new spot for quick Japanese food that we found accidentally. The food is affordable and the service is very nice. I love the fact that they give out free mochi ice cream sometimes when we dine-in. The Japanese fried rice is a must try!
google avatar

Joe B.

Yelp
Sumo advertises itself as good food for a good price and that's exactly what it is. I ordered the poke don bowl, the chicken karaage appetizer, and a yummy roll, all for a very good price. Out of the three, the karaage was the standout dish, but all three were good. All three things are some of my favorite things to eat, so being able to get all 3 for a pretty affordable price is nice. As far as the restaurant goes, I guess it operates as more of a fast food operation. We ordered the food to eat in but it was still served in cardboard trays that were hard to share from. In a neighborhood full of really high end Japanese food it can be hard to stand out, but what Sumo does well is provide a simple, quick, and still tasty Japanese meal for the nights you don't want to wait more and pay more for something fancier. And in a pretentious neighborhood, that's a welcome niche to fill.
google avatar

al B.

Yelp
The sushi is quite average, however, it is all served on paper and plastic. They are still in pandemic mode.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Finally had the opportunity to dine-in at Sumo this week! I have been ordering takeout from this place through out the entire pandemic, but decided to stay this time. The staff was friendly and service was fast. We were able to order and pay via an app right from our table. This is the perfect stop for a relaxed, quick meal.
google avatar

Jake B.

Yelp
Perfect for a late night meal. I got a curry bowl, which was very solid. The chicken was well cooked, and the curry had a good flavor to it. For sure recommended!
google avatar

Danny S.

Yelp
Sometimes I wish I was a sumo wrestler. Other times I wish I were a restaurant. And in the very, very rare occasion, I wish I was both: enter SUMO EXPRESS JAPANESE CUISINE. A relatively new kid on the block, Sumo Express has been a lifesaver during COVID19 with excellent speed and service, tasty sushi, and ultra-competitive market prices. Located conveniently near a Chase and Bank of America ATM, don't be afraid of emptying out your financial egg nest to cop some food here.
google avatar

Edward S.

Yelp
This is a relatively new sushi place on Broadway in Capitol Hill that replaced another sushi place--and was pleased to find out it was really good and well-priced. It is set up like fast food place--where you order your food at the counter and then it is made to order. I ordered the fried rice and the Sashimi deluxe meal. Both were excellent. I was afraid that the sashimi would kind of be grocery store quality, but it was actually really good across the board--particularly the salmon. The fried rice was great as well--with a generous portion. This is perfect sushi take-out place and I will definitely be back.

Alan R.

Yelp
Great sushi open late right in the middle of capital hill. They had free chicken bites when I went and they blew us away. Great stuff.
google avatar

Pauline S.

Yelp
Ordered the Seahawks, rainbow and tuna roll. Everything was fresh and delicious, and I appreciated the pieces of tuna were much bigger than I'm used to. Even though the portion of the rolls were smaller than I would've liked, the rolls were super tasty and the folks here were very accommodating and nice!
google avatar

Annie K.

Yelp
Was in Capitol Hill around lunchtime and stopped by Sumo Express for some sushi. Ordered unagi cucumber roll, salmon avocado, and chicken karaage. Food was ready quickly and was fresh and tasty. Will stop by again for some reasonably priced sushi, nothing fancy, but great for a quick meal.

Yelp
My new favorite sushi spot on Capitol Hill! Been here 5 times now always delicious, fast and friendly!
