Excellent catch up with friends in a lovely welcoming pub! There was lots of choice on the menu and reasonably priced. Service was exceptional very attentive and helpful.

We enjoyed a very relaxed and delicious Sunday lunch here. The rare roast beef was spot on and very tender. The vanilla ice cream and raspberry sorbet were a perfect compliment and finish to a super lunch.

Just popped in for a wine but couldn’t resist the menu. The cod was one of the most delicious pub meals I’ve had in a very long time… and I like a pub meal. Lovely atmosphere, lovely village with great walks around and a village car park where you can stay overnight in your van. I’ll be back here for sure!

So we arrived around 5pm yesterday one young lady at the bar - clearly under staffed but she done her best to cope. We then went through to the restaurant for a meal, the special was a lamb stew, you could see to the bottom of the dish like a concentrartion camp soup, seriously for £28! My burger arrived and was burnt on the oustise and luke warm in the middle, TBH Mcdonalds is better. Whilst eating the meal we we kept having to slap off the flies and its not even summer, I counted 11 on the beams over my head. Despite all this negativity the staff were very good. Less than impressed and well over priced for this poor meal.

Fantastic relaxed afternoon. Wonderful service and exceptional food & wine. A great menu , my wife has a pasta dish whilst the rest of us had a roast. Super wine and excellent service. Delicious dessert and coffee, however, the vin rouge was superb.

Food was really delicious. The big let down was the standards. We had to eat our entire meal circled by dozens of flies. Several landed on our table, on the wall, on us and on our plates. I even managed to kill two of them with my napkin. When another table complained that there were lots of flies a waitress said “yeah there are” and laughed it off. When I subsequently complained, they acknowledged that they had come out of no where and that their traps didn’t work and they were sorry about them, but yet nothing was taken off our bill and we were even wrongly charged for a drink we didn’t order. We had to ask for our bill twice and spent another 10 minutes waiting for someone to come with a card machine despite there being about 5 waiters present. And then had to wait for the bill to be updated. Clearly whatever standards were there have now dropped substantially. The Michelin guide needs an update…

Nice hostelry in picturesque historic Essex town. Good ales and the food looked good though I didn't eat there. Beware it's CARD ONLY at the bar.

We went as a family to celebrate a birthday for lunch. The food was really good quality and a decent portion each.

Sunday Roast in a lovely warm village pub in the heart of Constable country. Friendly, warm and not overly stylised or 'gastro-pub' as many in this area have become...

Excellent pub with extremely fast and friendly service. Popped in there for a lunchtime snack and a few beers after a nice walk along the river. Good range of real ales and a fantastic ploughmans. Chunky soda bread with a choice of three cheeses on the plate with gherkins and onions.

Really excellent food and drink. Really enjoyed our stay here. The chef clearly cares about quality and sourcing as everything seems to come locally, so i was very happy to see a bill that didn't blow my socks off after a decent Saturday night dinner! Will go back again soon.

Been here a couple of times now, and both have been great experiences. The menu whilst not extensive has been different each time, all with Italian slant but definitely not the usual pizza / pasta fare. Service is first class.
