Sun Ranch

"Why book? To stay on a groovy, good-time ranch on 50 acres in the middle of the Byron hinterland. Set the scene In the hills of Byron Bay, this property takes its shape from the California and New Mexico ranches of yesteryear. It is a heehaw of maximalist color, textiles and patterns, with opulent velvet sofas, twirling terracotta flooring, beaded chandeliers and color-clashing walls. Everything has been set up for a rollicking good time from the mezcal-stocked cowboy bar to the sauna and ice bath and the 25-meter magnesium pool with ample space for sprawled-out sunbaking to a background of funky jazz. The backstory The ranch is owned by two formidable best friends (plus a cohort of investors). Jamie Blakely was behind the popular Australian rock ‘n’ roll denim brand One Teaspoon, and Julia Ashwood is a content creator (The_Vista), co-founder of some of the region’s buzziest pubs and restaurants (The Eltham, You Beauty! And Ciao Mate) and grew up in the area. The pair wanted to create a design-forward “good-time” hotel that reflected their travels around the US and Mexico. Scattered around the hotel are one-off finds from their travels such as Spanish birthing chairs that line the bar and birds of paradise chairs from Africa. Collaborating with local artists was integral, and the hotel shines a light on the creativity of the area. The signage on doors, walls and timber archways was painted by the steady hand of artist and signwriter Nathan Pickering. The sculptural chandeliers in all the rooms are by Lana Launay, and artist Jedda Daisy-Culley painted the psychedelic cowboy, which looks over the whiskey lounge. The rooms Each of the four deeply comfortable and adult-only bedrooms in the main ‘Rambler’ house are named for toe-curling good times – The Wam Bam, The Rattler, Getting Lucky and Saddle Up. All are decked out in their own color-popping hue from azure to ox-blood, and there are vintage vinyl players and minibars stocked with locally sourced goodies. All the rooms open to their own patio and the rambler private pool, which has been cleverly divided with thick canvas curtains to give each room its own private slice of the pool. Those wanting more space should book the private suite with its own living room, kitchenette and spacious bathroom. Families or groups of mates should book into one of the six fully equipped two-bedroom timber barns overlooking the property. Food and drink Days here start with a bandana-wrapped freshly baked muffin in a cowboy hat on your doorstep, followed by a make-your-own plate from the healthy buffet spread. In-house dining is available all day with crowd-pleasing snacks like sardines and cheese-boards to heartier lasagnas and quesadillas. There is a concise but punchy cocktail menu, and a wine list that ranges from old-world to natural and even some in cans. Outside, a big Argentine asador and long communal table are set up for larger events and fire feasts. Once in a while, Sun Ranch will host a guest chef; these tend to be hot ticket events where guests and locals dine together. The spa No spa, but this is Byron Bay so ‘cosmic cowboy’ additions can be added to your stay from the usual in-room massages and cacao ceremonies to the more crystal-charged astrology readings and sound healing sessions. The area Right in the middle of the Byron hinterland. You’re five minutes from the charming weatherboard villages of Bangalow and Newrybar and about 15 minutes from the centre of Byron Bay and its shorelines. The service Laidback and friendly. Everything is ordered via text message so wherever you are in the ranch – by the pool, or down by the sauna or in your room – food and drinks are delivered to you. Eco effort Considerable. Sun Ranch was built with sustainability at its core. From using environmentally minded builders 'Balanced Earth' right down to ethical towels (Baina) and hand wash (Sansceuticals). It’s also off-grid and solar powered with Via panels across the main building, on the rooftop of every barn, and shed and ground-mounted stations throughout the 55 acres. The property is also rainwater-fed with 16 tanks. On the land, 10,000+ native plants and trees have been planted and Sun Ranch has joined forces with local group Bangalow Koalas with an aim to plant a further 5-10,000 trees before spring. “The soil is so fertile here, things grow very quickly, we are already taking the horse trails through the rejuvenated forest we planted just 14 months ago”, says Ashwood. Accessibility The main building is single-floor, and one of the barns is wheelchair accessible. Anything left to mention? Keep an eye out for special events. Sun Ranch hosts a roster of events from book readings to performances which always bring in the local creative community." - Chloe Sachdev

The Best New Hotels in Australia and Asia: 2024 Hot List

"Byron’s center of gravity has long been swinging inwards from its shorelines to its greener pastures and charming weatherboard villages. Already the not-so-secret postcode for eco-entrepreneurs and Hollywood hideouts, the Byron Hinterland has increasingly felt out of bounds to anyone without an invitation to one of its hillside homes, which has made the opening of Sun Ranch inevitable. The hotel is the vision of Jamie Blakey, who launched rock ’n’ roll denim brand One Teaspoon, and her best friend, Julia Ashwood, who grew up in the area and has cofounded some of the buzziest restaurants in this go-slow region. Spread across more than 55 acres of undulating green hills, this groovy ranch is a loud maximalist hee-haw of color, textile, and pattern. There are bright walls in shades from azure to flamingo, swirling terra-cotta flooring, opulent velvet lounges, and sculptural beaded chandeliers. In the coral Cowboy Bar, bottles of tequila and mezcal are infused with chillies for varying levels of spicy kick. In the main “rambler” house, the four bedrooms offer access to a private pool. Outside, where horses roam, families staying in the colorful two-bedroom timber barns have a hoot on electric bicycles, while young couples and mates down by the dam time each other in the wood-fired sauna and ice bath. Up in the distance, overlooking the property, a monolithic slab of concrete has been chiseled into the Pool Club, where sunbaking and lazy laps to a background of funky jazz and tequila are the order of the day." - CNT Editors

Insanely good stay... anyone that gives this place less than 5 stars has rocks in their head! The property is immaculate, the cabins are super trendy, comfortable and well considered, and the staff are next level friendly/helpful. We stayed with our entire family across multiple cabins and rooms and the staff bent over backwards to help us have a good time. The fire-side dinners that they setup were stunning. The breakfast was really nice and very on brand. The place makes you jump on your phone to buy acreage near your home to try and replicate the experience. We will be back for sure.

We stayed at the Sun Ranch for 3 nights for my brothers birthday. This place did not disappoint & completely exceeded our expectations. The vibe of this place is something special! We had the most incredible experience horse riding, dressing up as cowboys & drinking delicious margaritas whilst watching the sun go down and staying warm by the outdoor fire pit. Every inch of this place is stylish- not one bad photo can be taken. We had 2 infants & 2 toddlers with our group and it was the perfect family getaway! Memories to cherish & look back on. The vibes were insane. The staff all exceptional! I would rate this as the best hotel experience to date. Thanks again legends!! We will be back. Yeehaw

Absolutely stunning location, beyond comfortable rooms, wonderful, down to earth, friendly staff, and impeccable vibes. It was pouring rain our entire stay, but it didn't detract from the experience at all. We arrived to beautiful, chill music playing, sage burning, and the best margarita I've ever had (I'm normally not a fan, but holy cow!) It feels like you're far away from the hustle and bustle, but in reality, almost everything is a 15 minute drive away, max. We loved it so much that we immediately booked our next trip. Can't wait to come back.☀️💛✨

Absolutely beautiful place to stay. Lots of green space and well maintained gardens. Amazing views. The staff are very friendly and helpful and did their very best to make sure we were looked after and felt welcome. Just a few things that need improving: More toilets in the public spaces. From what we could tell there was only one unisex toilet to cover the reception, lounges and bars and common areas, including the busy breakfast period. Think this was really poorly planned. While the pool was gorgeous, it had really amazing views, lovely towels and the magnesium water is such a nice touch….BUT there is no pool toilet or, change room. Especially not having a toilet as the pool is quite a distance away from the one toilet available in the common areas. So you basically have to walk all the way down the hill through the bars and reception in your swimmers and back again up the hill. This was so poorly planned out and a real turn off. The barns are gorgeous and well designed. Love the fire place and self contained kitchen. Ben linen is amazing and great quality but the mattresses feel really old and sunken. These need replacing. Breakfast Breakfast is basic. Has enough but could be much better. Especially for what is charged for accommodation. 5 start accommodation prices but a 3 star breakfast. We were so surprised at the basic spread and small space available for guests to sit around. The quality was average too. The yogurts and milks are the everyday mainstream ones from the supermarket chains, nothing artisan, local farmer about it. Bacon seemed like it was from the local supermarket aisles. No sausages, no pancakes, no pastries, no hard cheeses, only boiled eggs available. Jams and condiments also felt very mainstream supermarkety. Would have liked to have seen much more homemade local artisan products. Fruit was okay but minimal. Had to pay $7 for a latte! Had a great stay but not sure we would go back and definitely wouldn’t pay full price for accommodation if we did.

When I found this i was blown away to find somewhere like this so close to brisbane... It reminded me of the California countryside and is a little hidden gem. But in real life, it is so much better again than what you imagine seeing it online. Such a serene, relaxing and enchanting ranch. We went there for a girls day out and so so nice, make sure to use the pool, the sauna and try their drinks and food.

I cannot speak more highly of our entire experience at Sun Ranch. Mon and the team made us feel right at home, they are all angels. Margs on arrival, food and drinks were 10/10, and our Darling barn room was the perfect hideaway. I loved the whole concept, views were amazing and I just honestly can’t believe a place so unique and special exists. We will be back 🫶🏽

We chose to spend the first half of our honeymoon at Sun Ranch and boy was it the right choice! The perfect haven to land post wedding high, we softened so comfortably into the serene embrace this place offers. Highlights were daily yoga (with Sharne), an epic breakfast spread and the very close proximity to Byron and neighbouring towns in the Northern Rivers area. We left feeling rejuvenated, rested and looking forward to our next stay at Sun Ranch. Musts: get a car, will make your stay so much easier, eat at Ciao Mate and hit up the sauna and ice bath. Thank you to the staff who were all a 10/10!

Everything was top notch and the staff were so sweet and polite. There is so much to do at the property that you won’t get bored during the stay. Everything is well thought of and has become my absolute favourite place to recharge myself🔋 Definitely revisiting soon!
