The Best Coffee Shops in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"At SunBean, the new(ish) Black-owned shop in Minneapolis’s Standish-Ericsson neighborhood, the focus is as much on mental health and community as coffee; this is a place to gather, to connect, and to slow down with a pastry and a steaming macchiato. Owners Fred and Annie DuBose have outfitted the space with a “sun bar” of light therapy lamps designed for warding off Minnesota’s endemic winter blues. Classic coffee drinks, plus tea and hot chocolate, are served alongside a smattering of pastries and snacks." - Stacy Brooks

Super friendly staff and delicious breakfast sandwiches and coffee! I got their seasonal Love is Love latte and it was amazing! I love how they also feature an artist of the month. Great way to bring the community together.

Nice coffee shop in the Longfellow neighborhood. On the smaller side which is great. Quiet for working remotely. One big table in the back. Friendly service. Looks like there is a gathering outside which looks fun. Nice experience.

My husband and I love this coffee shop. We've been unofficially touring/trying all of the coffee shops in the area, and sunbeam stands out. Their specialty cold brew is delicious (the best around!). I'm a big fan of the matcha latte. I've only had the sweets but the pop tarts and other desserts are scrumptious. Definitely worth trying.

Cutest little coffee shop tucked into this neighborhood. Staff is so warm and welcoming and drinks are always a special tasty treat! Specialty drinks are unique and delicious combinations and classic drinks are done well. Also has great vegan options so bring your vegan friends here!

Another hidden gem. I visited here for a Yelp event and now have added them to my list. Love the vibes just walking in with music playing in the background, plants everywhere, and just sunlight beaming throughout the cafe. They have outdoor seating outside and there’s also street parking out front. I ordered the special coffee and one of their everything bagel pastries and I loved both!

Google
Calling all coffee lovers! Come soak up some sun on Sunbean's beautiful back patio, or catch some artificial rays with Light Therapy at their signature SunBar while enjoying a delicious coffee. SunBean is a Black-owned business on a mission to "spread sunshine, community, and positivity through exceptional coffee and a welcoming atmosphere," and the owner, Fred, certainly delivers on that mission! He was great to chat with and fosters a warm sense of community inside his shop. It is decorated by work from local artists as well as a beautiful tropical mural that will be especially nice to sip coffee in front of come wintertime. This is truly a place where all are welcome, even if you're a caffeine novice. Keep an eye on their social media for fun monthly specials and upcoming community events. I got a blueberry passionfruit pop tart (made by another stellar local company, Fruit & Grain) and Fred's Favorite - an oatmilk miel latte with a dash of cinnamon. I’ve also had their cereal milk latte, which I loved. Great coffee, highly recommend! Parking was easy with lots of a street parking in front of the coffee shop, seems like a nice quiet neighborhood in the Nokomis area of Minneapolis.

Yelp
Right away I walked in and loved the ambiance. The artwork was beautiful. Quiet space to do some work or grab coffee and food. I got the white chocolate pumpkin mocha. I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin flavor but this was so good! I don't remember the cashiers name but she was friendly and helpful as I decided on what drink to get.

Yelp
I think SunBean Coffee might just be my new favorite, local coffee shop! Their drinks are fantastic and staff are warm and welcoming. Last time I was here, I tried their drink of the month: Iced Cereal Milk Latte. It was delicious and nostalgic, too, with the lucky charms marshmallows on top. My wife got the drink that put them on the map--salted caramel bourbon cold brew. She loved it. On top of the great drinks and service, the homemade poptarts (sourced from another business, I believe) were top notch.

Yelp
Great coffee, good food, and even better vibes. The owner was extremely friendly and has created a really nice atmosphere to study or chill in! Not to mention, the homemade pop tarts were delish!

Yelp
I kind of love this place a lot. It's an utterly charming little urban coffee shop with great drinks and food. Full disclosure: my first visit happened because of a free drink offered to Yelp Elites, but I keep coming back because the idea of stopping in for a coffee and a snack keeps winning me over. I've gotten their mochas and I've been getting their monthly drink specials which are delicious every time. They also have these unique pastries which I think they call "Gourmet Pop Tarts" that are awesome. What I've specifically been doing is stopping here at lunchtime for a coffee, grabbing one of those pastries to eat later, and having it on my desk where my officemates invariably admire it and are jealous of me for having it. You should come here if you want that experience. Beyond that, this is a totally pleasant place to linger, with its cute decor, a bit of patio seating, and service that is as neighborly and upbeat as anyone could want. A couple more notes about their offerings... I like hot coffee drinks and it seems like they are excited about what they do with cold ones, but I'm not an expert in that, but I bet the cold coffee drinks they make are awesome. Also I had a delicious breakfast burrito last time, very plump and filling.

Yelp
What a cozy place! They even have " sad light " that will help you with seasonal affective disorder. Helping you be happier! I had Fred's fave. Oatmilk latte with cinnamon. I love it. I don't even care for oat milk more of a soymilk gal. It has very balance flavors. Perfect amount of slight sweetness. This is now also my fave. (Thanks Sunbean) The staffs are friendly and very welcoming and they told me some fun facts: Breakfast sandwiches made by next door bar - Bull's Horn! (Another great place to visit) Fresh never frozenI had the mangorita poptart while I was there. It has FRESH mango inside. Soooo good. Crispy pie not too sweet which is good. The pop tarts and savory hand pies are made by Emily at Fruit and Grain! She is also at some farmer's markets but doesn't have a brick and mortar store.

Yelp
This new local spot is awesome! Fred, the owner, was working behind the counter when I came in and was so pleasant and fun to chat with! I love seeing the mind behind the business working and serving customers and getting to know him as well! The honey oatmilk latte was delicious! I had them make it the "OG" way, and it didn't disappoint strong coffee flavor, sweet without being too sweet. Perfect on a sunny summer day! I also decided to grab some pastries to try as well! I got the peaches and cream and passion fruit blueberry poptarts and they were delicious as well! I don't think they're made in house but still highly recommend! The overall feel of this place was bright, welcoming and chill at the same time. I was surprised how bright it was when I walked in but it gave me an overwhelming sense of fun and friendliness when I was inside. If you're looking to check out a small, new local coffee shop, start here and support the owners dream becoming a reality!

Yelp
Cozy little place with street parking out front. They have tons of fun toppings and syrups to make your own concoction. I asked for marshmallow fluff and sea salt on my vanilla Oatmilk latte and the barista worked with it and made me this incredible marshmallow sea salt cold foam. It's fun to go to a place where you can be creative :)

Yelp
Wonderful pastry and beverage options. A must try for uniqueness and quality. Small shop and good for solo visit or with a friend.

Yelp
I stopped in this morning for a breakfast sandwich. There were a few people in front of me, but it felt like it was my turn to order in no time! I asked the barista what kinds of sandwiches they had? Only one; turkey sausage, egg and cheese. Skeptically I asked: how is turkey sausage?! She said she was skeptical at first too but really likes it. Trusting her judgement, I ordered it. She didn't steer me wrong, It was in fact delicious! I love how bright & welcoming the digs are. Definitely somewhere I can see myself having lunch w a friend. Thanks SunBean for the delicious breakfast...that was easy to eat on my commute and wasn't even a little messy. Thanks for the friendly and fast service! Looking forward to breakfasting here again soon.

Yelp
What a wonderful location! Sunbeam really beams with customer service, professionalism & warmth. I'm sure the caffeine beams as well! The atmosphere is inviting. Crisp white walls with tasteful decor. From the front door and out the back, you're hit with warm and friendly color that continues with the "sunbeaming vibe." I tried Fred's Oat Milk Honey Latte, The Dirty Nana & the breakfast sandwich. The Dirty Nana was delicious and my new guilty and caffeinated pleasure. The service was top tier. Thank you Sunbeam, for such wonderful service. I'll be back!

Yelp
So nice I had to come back again! Discovered this little spot during a local event and now it's my go to any time I am in the Nokomis area! I love coming here after a walk around the lake and grabbing an Iced Oatmilk Honey drink to cool off. I'm also looking forward to coming here once the weather starts to turn to enjoy a hot beverage and walk around the park. The spot is small but boasts a bunch of personality and delicious coffee. It's locally owned business, so definitely can feel good supporting the local economy when you're here. They're always so sweet whenever we come in, and that's what makes me always want to come back. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood! Located just 9 minutes from Lake Nokomis, this coffee shop brings all the sunshine from the peppy baristas, pastries, sun lamps, extremely clean interior and outside patio. Easy free street parking aided in making my visit seamless and I can't help but think what a wonderful addition the sun lamps will be in the winter months. While I did arrive around 10:45 am on a Saturday, the rumor inside was that busy hours are very early in the morning which may be something to take note of considering the inside is quite tiny. Regardless, we had the entire patio to ourselves (4 Adirondack chairs) and enjoyed the good weather, exterior mural, flowers, coffee, and conversation. The baristas helped us select a recommended drink that was something to the extent of a sugar free vanilla latte with homemade cold foam. I also learned that the owner's daughter painted the mural in the back of the shop. Be sure to check it out! I look forward to my next visit. Thank you, SunBean Coffee!

Yelp
Such a cute coffee shop with fun drinks! I got the honey oat milk latte, which I loved. My husband got one of the specialty cold brews which was a lil milky for his typical tastes but was still delicious. They also offer pastries from a local baker. I absolutely love the vibes and how friendly the staff were, even though they were busy. It's a little small inside, but they also have a little patio in the back and a few tables along with window/wall seating (the wall seats have sun therapy lamps available). I'm so glad I checked them out and will be back!

Morgan H.

Yelp
The barista was nice and the place was cutesy but was disappointed with the drinks that were not only 9$ each for the smallest size but the strawberry matcha was not even green it just tasted like strawberry milk

Yelp
This is THE friendliest, most welcoming b coffee shop in the Twin Cities. The coffee, from a local roaster, is top-notch. Hoping for a couple of tables on the sidewalk this summer; that would be grand. Next time I go for a coffee - probably in a week with a friend who's my coffee buddy and may make this our weekly landing place - I'm going to get a bag of !

Jill J.

Yelp
Amazing addition to the local neighborhood! The drinks are exceptional and the owners and staff are so nice! The new patio out back is quiet and peaceful!
