"Tucked into the bluffs above the Mississippi River, this 16-acre farm holds its pizza nights Fridays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., from May 3 through September 28. No reservations are needed; bring your own blankets and chairs. In addition to the pizzas, the farm sells an impressive selection of Wisconsin craft beer, as well as wine and soda." - Eater Staff

13 Pizza Farms to Explore in Southern Minnesota and Wisconsin

@atlasobscura

"There’s an agricultural trend that’s been taking root the Midwest since the late-’90s, and it’s pizza farms. Pizza. Farms. No, this doesn’t mean farmland where pizzas are springing up from the earth, but it’s the next best thing. An increasing number of farms in places like Wisconsin and Minnesota are hosting pizza nights, serving pies made in wood-fire ovens from their own fresh crops, with locally sourced toppings based on what’s in season. There are pizza farms all over the country, but most, like Suncrest Gardens Farm, are in the Midwest, where the pizza nights create extra income for small farms. The pizza nights are usually picnic-style, with visitors bringing their own plates, utensils, blankets, towels, and chairs, and expected to clean up after themselves. One of the first Midwestern farms to start hosting pizza nights is A to Z Produce and Bakery in Stockholm, Wisconsin, which started the ingenious tradition in 1998. Since then, other farms have followed suit, and each has its own selling point. Suncrest Gardens is particularly family friendly; children are freer to run wild than on other farms. There’s also live music. Two Pony Gardens, in Long Lake, Minnesota, is particularly close to a city, making it a more convenient trip than most pizza farms, which can take two hours to reach from the closest metropolitan area. Pizza farms do have elements that require more diligence on the part of visitors than the average pizzeria. The animals are usually fenced in, but the fences tend to be electric, so it is generally a good idea to give them and their fences space. The same goes for fields on unpicked crops. That said, exploring the farm is usually encouraged as part of the unique and delicious experience. Know Before You Go Different pizza farms host their pizza nights on different days and at different hours. It is a good idea to call or email ahead and make sure they have room rather than just showing up." - AaronNetsky

Love this place, it's so relaxing and beautiful location. Perfect for families with kids, it's great for everyone. Food is outstanding, creativeness at it's best. Making pizzas that very few other people could even think of! Delicious pizza and creative drinks for thiae of you inclined! You can bring your own chairs, beverages and blankets. Kids can play on a variety of playground equipment. It really is a little slice of Heaven.

I can’t even begin to describe how wonderful this place is, but will certainly try. First of all; it’s absolutely beautiful- everywhere you look. Secondly, the food is amazing. Fresh, delicious, and made with love. What I can’t highlight enough is the wonderful staff members who work at Suncrest. I recently had my wedding reception here- Heather and her team were easy going, hard working, and so incredibly kind. Especially the bartender! If you’re thinking of going out for pizza, or asking Suncrest to host an event, you truly can’t go wrong. THANK you to the amazing people at this beautiful establishment.

I was a little upset with the service here considering all the rave reviews I heard from my coworkers. I drove up from Onalaska and there was a huge storm and it took over an hour and a half to get there. We weren't sure what the weather was going to be so I called in the order for pick up. I get there and the rain stopped so we decided we would check out the atmosphere. A lady in a purple head band came up to me and the first thing she told me was that I was not supposed to call in for take out and then sit there. It was not a very welcoming first impression with what we went through to give this place a try.

Great atmosphere, felt like a backyard get together. The pizza was great! Did one of the specialties and was not disappointed. Keep up the good work,

Great variety of wood fired pizza, alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages, appetizers, and dessert. Live music, wide open valley. Fun atmosphere. Bring your own chairs and sit wherever you want!

Loved going here so much that we had our wedding reception here as well. Specifically as a wedding venue, the staff at Suncrest Gardens went above and beyond to make sure everything ran smoothly and I didn't have to be stressed on the day of. Highly recommend!

I’ve been here several times over the past 2 years. The setting is what makes it and the only reason I would ever choose to return. The farm is a lovely place to gather with a group. The pizza is good, nothing extraordinary, but the ingredients are very fresh and there are speciality flavors you won’t find anywhere else close by. The big drawback that overrides the positives of dining here is the overall service. If it’s nice weather out, you will spend a loooooong time waiting in line to place your order. When you get to the front of the line, there is a cooler for you to open and choose which beverage(s) you want, then you will step up to the single Point Of Sale terminal (an iPad) being operated by an employee. The employee will slowly punch in your order on the iPad, take your payment, and give you a buzzer to alert you when your food is ready to be picked up. There is a prominent “TIPS” bucket there, asking you to tip this employee for their service, which was literally just seconds of transactional engagement. This last visit I paid with cash and the employee asked if I wanted my change. There’s actually a second line, just for drinks, that you can spend a long time in while you’re waiting for your food order, should you want something else to drink. Here, you will also choose your own beverage from a cooler and there will be another very slow, borderline inept, iPad operator to punch in your order, take your payment, and solicit tips from you. It is offensive to solicit tips for providing exactly zero non-essential service. The public-facing employees are only doing what is absolutely necessary, taking payments, and literally nothing else. At no time do these employees appear the least bit concerned about the speed at which they move through customers. I choose my own beverages from a cooler, I pick up my food order from a window, i get my own napkins and condiments, I dispose of all the garbage left over after eating, I have no interactions with employees aside from handing them money after waiting in a line they have no concern over moving through with any urgency. The menu prices at Suncrest Gardens are not minimal, they are higher than many other pizza restaurants operating out of rented spaces in nearby towns. How can it be that those higher prices don’t allow the owners to pay their cashiers enough to not need to solicit tips? And why is it that a place like this has never found it necessary to instill a sense of urgency in their public-facing employees that might make patrons feel like their time and experience matters? Read all the lowest rated reviews, here, and you will see that the wait times and general lack of service has been a common complaint going many years back. Apparently it doesn’t matter to management. As I’m writing this review I feel less inclined than ever to return, honestly. I just don’t think Suncrest Gardens actually cares about their patrons, I think they only see them as a source of money to be squeezed for every possible drop.

Amazing experience first time going, got the in season chicken Alfredo with mushrooms and it was amazing! Live music for people to enjoy! Can't wait to go again!

Yelp
"It's just country boys and girls gettin' down on the farm." -Tim McGraw Have you ever wondered whether pizzas grow on trees, vines, or are plucked from underground? The best way to get the root or meat and cheese of the matter is to get down on this 16-acre pizza farm yourself. To get there, drive through serpentine country back roads and "a steady cloud of dust that leads back to a field filled with pickup trucks." Park behind the main buildings where rows of tomato, mozzarella, and pepperoni plants grow. Save time by sending some of your crew to scout for a prime picnic spot while you queue up in the ordering line. Expect a long wait, but hay, it's worth it! You'll be happy as a pig in the mud sinking your teeth into a tasty, wood-fired, farm-fresh pizza. We ordered the following (ingredients in pics): PESTO: Basically an apprentice Vampire Slayer. Killer pizza, but not strong enough to destroy Jemaine Clement's Vladislav. HALEY'S COMET: Fungus is not for me. THAI CHICKEN: Popularithai contest winner! It could use extra cilantro as that was overpowered by the sweet chili peanut sauce. VAMPIRE SLAYER (previous visit): Unearthly amounts of garlic will give your inner Buffy raging vampire-slayah superpowers! Hi-yah! But there's more on this farm than meets the sty besides pizza! Hang out by the campfire, enjoy live music, or visit with the resident chickens, cows, pigs and goats. You'll be living high on the hog, enjoying it all on a Suncrest pizza night until the cows come home. Best pizza, barn none. DRESS CODE: Come as you are COVER CHARGE: Ain't one FARM RULES: "Don't forget to shut the gate, and stay out of the beans" REWARD for finding Becky

Yelp
This place is out in the boonies, but so worth driving to. I visited here for a special event, so I can't really judge the normal operations or service. The pizzas we had were super creative and scrumptious. I had so many different ones, I can't decide which one I liked best, they were all good. Fresh ingredients. The sheep and chickens were a big attraction for everyone in our party. It was a lovely evening.

Yelp
ALL THE WAY FROM CHICAGO! This is by far one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. It is absolutely worth the 5.5 hour drive from Chicago. The entire set up is beautiful, cozy, and relaxing. It's such a stress free place and a great escape from the Chicago city life. When we first arrived, we saw a beautiful flower arrangement. You can pick out whatever flowers and as much flowers as you want for a self-serve 5$ donation. It is basically right where we parked, so it was our first stop before walking into the farm. The entrance is basically the ordering station. There's a window with menus and decor all around it and a fridge with drinks for purchase. After you place your order, you are directed to the back with a number for another window and a bar to pick up your food and drinks. The scenery is just breathtaking. There's a few outdoor seating options, however, it seems like most people bring their own chairs and blankets and cozy up by the fire pit. I even saw a few people roasting marshmallows. There is also a great play area for kids and tons of farm animals like chickens, goats, sheep and cows. Quick heads up: Pizza nights are Friday's and Saturday's from 4-8:30PM during the months of May to September. In October, pizza nights are Saturday's only from 3 to 7:30PM. I noticed that they have one event coming up in November in which they celebrate the fall season with a "Dinner on the Farm". I believe the farm is closed throughout the winter season, but I'd double check with the owners just to be sure. It was just my boyfriend and I, but believe it or not, we ordered three 12 inch pizzas. We wanted to try everything we desired. It's not everyday we get to go to a farm and eat pizza! We had the Zippy Roadrunner and Thai Chicken pizzas from the seasonal menu, and from the original menu, we had the Mushroom and Herb pizza with the butternut squash upgrade since they were in season. I had the Heirloom Tomato Salad also from the seasonal appetizers menu. I'm not sure what it is, but my lord the freshness of the food here is out of this world. It's truly farm to table and you can definitely tell the difference. There was a little bit of a wait on our pizzas, but that's totally expected. I also realized that this farm seems to be run by women and I'm all for that. The ladies are doing an excellent job. On the day we visited, they had a pie contest and numerous people brought in pies. You had the option to try as many pies as you want for a donation starting at 3$ per pie. The money goes to help a school down the hill, which made us want to get even more pies. We ended up trying 4 different pies, but hey, it's for charity! The farm is not only pizzas and just sitting around. There are also live performances and movie nights that go on, so just make sure to log onto their website and double check what's going on the evening you decide to visit. This was by far one of the best trips I've had in my life and I can't wait to be back!

Yelp
We live on a farm. So, initially, I wasn't taken with the idea of eating on a farm. I can do that at home for less money. However, we were traveling and we wanted something different, so we drove a bit out of the way to Suncrest. This is a very casual and relaxing place, set amidst the beautiful bluffs and valleys of the Wisconsin Mississippi River country. They could use better signage and instructions. It wasn't clear to us, from driving up, whether they were open or not. You have to continue past the house to the parking in the rear. That's where the barn and food is located. We happened to hit on the second Saturday, during the summer, when they are serving small, 8-inch wood fired pizzas and some other unique food items from their garden cafe. There was a long, slow moving line when we arrived. It seemed to take a lot longer to order than it should. It's not obvious what you're supposed to do once you order, but they hand you a bucket with a number on it, a mason jar filled with water, and then it's your job to go find a seat, or move tables and chairs to make yourself comfortable on the farm. You can either eat inside or out. Outside it more enjoyable, as you can watch the chickens running around, pet the pygmy goats, see the ducks, and watch the shadows from the clouds pass over the green covered bluffs in the distance. It's quite tranquil. In time, our pizzas arrived. They were quite good, with a generous amount of cheese. Don't expect crisp crust. It was more like a soft New York style pizza. You could fold the crust easily if you wanted. It was delicious. Unfortunately, there was no live music the evening we arrived. That's on certain Friday nights during the summer. If you want to know what's happening on certain nights, definitely give them a call before you go. There are outhouses for use here. If that bothers you, go before you arrive. This is nice alternative. I think it would especially appeal to families. The children can play on the playground equipment and watch the animals while the adults enjoy their meal.

Yelp
This is a very cute place! The pizza is great, friendly staff, and they have vegan options! :) 10/10

Yelp
Take the time to drive to this place !!! It's magical beautiful setting, relaxing and fun. We are so glad that this place was recommended to us by the World Cup Coffee place in Fountain City. We lucked out with gorgeous weather! The pizza here is the best I've ever had !!! We ordered the house pesto 16" and we demolished it hahaha The drink selection is awesome with great variety. Loved our date night here it's one that we will be talking about for years to come.

DeAnna S.

Yelp
This is my favorite pizza farm. Out out of town guests are always impressed. Bring a lawn chair and be ready go to chill and enjoy the outdoors. There is typically a campfire going and live music. Alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages are available for sale as well as various appetizers and of course wood fired pizza! Everything is made with fresh local ingredients. Expect a wait for the pizza as this place gets very crowded. The pizza is worth the wait. In addition to traditional toppings, there is also a seasonal pizza or two. We had a Hawaiian, a BBQ chicken (minus the onions), Mushrooms & Herb, and a Supreme. They were all scrumptious!

Yelp
I visited the pizza farm Thursday night around 5pm. Unfortunately it was drizzling when we arrived, so we chose to sit inside. There were not many other people visiting the farm that evening which was nice. Inside the building there are 3 sets of banquet tables with chairs. We ordered chips & salsa, mason jar sangria & a small classic pizza with red sauce & sausage. Sangria was delicious! I liked that the pizza came in the "green box". If you forgot plates the top of the box is perforated to tear into 4 plates. Everything we ate was amazing! Must get the s'more kits to make at the fire pit after dinner. They offer two different options: Hershey chocolate bar or Reese's. Each s'mores kit comes with 2 marshmallows, 2 graham crackers & the choice chocolate. The weather cleared up after eating our pizza & we were able to make our s'mores by the fire. Pay attention to the way you drive in... Little to no cell service. Cell phone GPS could not connect on our way out. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
This place is magical. We traveled 4 hours from Milwaukee to eat here and we're not disappointed in the slightest. The drive in is like no other. Dead center in gorgeous valleys of driftless farmland. Rolling fields of vegetables and sunflowers. Pigs, chickens, cows, goats, and little bird we couldn't ID but were adorable nevertheless. Exiting the car we could hear music and laughter. I'm getting stoked just thinking about that moment. The staff is extremely friendly and are happy to talk about everything the farm has to offer. It was packed that evening (the woman who took our order said they were probably going to sell a record amount of pizzas) but such a wonderful ambiance. Smiles everywhere. We ordered the Sunshine and Summertime Love pizzas, which were seasonal and gosh dang delicious. Couldn't have been happier. Final and important note: gentlemen, the urinals are around the back of the small building housing the bathrooms. Don't wait in line for the bathrooms that face the eating area. That's for ladies and families and the little girls waiting in line behind you will laugh. At least that's what happened to me. :)

Lindsie H.

Yelp
Wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. Great pizza and good drink options.

Becky F.

Yelp
Absolutely worth the drive. Cell phone service is spotty out there, which is actually preferrable for me as everyone needs to actually talk to each other! Bring along chairs to sit in. Pizza is amazing, people are so friendly. I make any excuse to get out there, and I live in St. Paul.

Susan M.

Yelp
A very relaxing atmosphere can be found here, not to mention delicious wood fired pizza! Lots of activities to keep kids busy with a play area for them to run and play with other kids! The pizza is made with the freshest ingredients possible grown on the farm!

Jerhad T.

Yelp
FRESH- I think they run into the gardens and pick your toppings after you order. It tastes so fresh. Unique- Order the basic pizzas you're used to or get creative with their "in season" specials. On this trip I had the BLT. They also have a nice variety of beer and wine. Atmosphere- Outdoor seating (indoor seating optional), lots of space to spread out or come with a large group. Most nights there's live music. When the sun sets grab a marshmallow and make a s'more. Con/ or is it...? Be ready to wait a little while for your pizza. Don't go when you're in a rush. This is an eating experience. Not fast food.

Maria S.

Yelp
If you are in the area you absolutely should stop at this "pizza farm". Fresh ingredients grown on location turned into AMAZING pizza wood fired and ready to eat. The people who work here are SO gracious and welcoming. They have free music, a bar, and bathrooms. They DO NOT have tables or plates or silverware - which is good as long as you know. So pack your picnic blanket or some tables and chairs and your plates and head out there for some AMAZING pizza.

Amantha F.

Yelp
The most enjoyable evening in a long time. Music was superb. Loved the pizza. Drinks were nice. Highly recommend the Sangria and Rhubarb Spritzer. Only improvement would be the Loaded Nachos, which aren't loaded with much. Adorable place. Glad we were kindles and could enjoy some music and good conversation.

Bree L.

Yelp
Pack your chair, a blanket, plates, and forks to enjoy pizza picnic style. The live music will entertain you while the kids keep busy on one of the many play structures. There are also goats and chickens to set the perfect scene. A wood fired pizza is really the gold standard for crust lovers. The sauce is perfect and the cheese is farm fresh. The pesto pizza is delicious. You must try a specialty-in season pizza. Go crazy you can go back to plain cheese at home. Although, the cheese pizza is equally great here as well. There are drinks for purchase including beer and wine. Go here and enjoy and evening on the farm!

Katie B.

Yelp
Beautiful scenery, pizza not so much. Wait was 2 hours. Not worth the wait. Music was good, lack of beer choices and you have to wait in the pizza line just to get water. Not organized and not a good system.
