"It serves one of the two best versions of grasshopper pie ice cream that I’ve ever tasted (the other is at Mitchell’s in San Francisco). The cookie-to-cream ratio is perfection, meaning that it’s basically a bunch of mashed-up Oreos pasted together with mint ice cream, both bold and refreshing." - Rebecca Flint Marx

Family of 5 Review - Scoop it up! PRO TIP 1: Cash ONLY 💵 PRO TIP 2: Bring your collegiate banner flag (see photo) Thursday 7:30 PM parking was almost full (when leaving they had a parking attendant 😬). Under the outdoor tent an employee inside was kind enough to open the window and say there was NO line inside. We got a vanilla Frappe, Coconut Waffle Cone, and Cookie Dough Waffle Cone. Everything was amazing! We couldn’t believe the amount of cookie dough in the ice cream. The interior decoration and memorabilia was a nice touch. They have a water jug and cups for free. Open Daily 11-10:30! Highly Recommend and will be coming back.

Me and my husband stopped here around 7pm on a Sunday ight and the reviews are true, the line was down the road but there are workers helping people park. We parked across the street at the pizza joint because we got that pace for dinner and just walked across the street. You can wait outside under a large tent or you can go inside and wait. We went inside and it was very busy but we didn't wait long in line. I got the large sundae and it was amazing! The whip cream was so soft and good! The fudge was also amazing! For the three flavors I got pumpkin, Bass River and Milky way, all really rich and good!

There seriously isn’t a better ice cream shop out there. Their homemade ice cream is the best there is, the sauces, the homemade whipped cream, the quaint inside and the breezy outdoor picnic tables. Everything is 100% and if you haven’t gone you’re missing out. Bring quarters so you can play the cool, person-less piano! (Photo of me and my 91 year old grandpa who loves their frappes!)

We came in early May before the summer madness. It was about noonish and there was one couple inside sitting down, I love visiting places off peak/off season for this exact reason. The two young ladies behind the counter were friendly and helpful. My boyfriend tries cookie dough wherever we go and this one was definitely up there! I had coffee Oreo and it was delish. Highly recommend this spot!

Google
Been coming here for a long time. Great ice cream and classic old school parlor inside. I love the player piano for 25 cents, although it was out of order on my recent visit. Lots of flavors and some sugar free or low fat as well. They also have a candy shop and merch shop attached to it. Plenty of parking and cash only but an ATM outside building.

Alex Issokson

Google
Some of the best ice cream on Cape Cod! Their hot fudge and fresh whipped cream really makes it. Their cherries are also tasty and fresh. I tried the special flavor which was a dirty brownie with hot fudge. It was super chocolatey and although there was a bit too much fudge (I might recommend ordering it on the side), it was all so tasty. Bring water too! They have a water fountain but it doesn’t go very high.

Cash only and be prepared to wait! We got a double scoop of coffee + strawberry, a mini split (two scoops, two toppings, with banana, house whip, and a cherry), a root beer float, and a sundae (one scoop with house whip and a cherry) and everyone was part of the clean plate club. The house whipped cream is delicious and goes so well with the house fudge sauce. Will be back! Waited about 30 min at 7:30pm on a Thursday. Line of cars went down the road by the time we left

Google
Delicious! We went to a 7 different ice cream stands (once daily for a week!) and Sundae School was at the top, along with School House and Smuggler’s. 😋 🍦 It’s a special flavor but if it’s on the menu during your visit, we LOVED Chocolate Oreo! Bass River Mud (coffee fudge, chips, and chopped almonds), grasshopper and cookie dough were also super!! SIZING NOTE: Not that we went away hungry 😂 but sizes here were smaller than everywhere else we went. Their “small” was the size of everyone else’s “kiddie” and their “medium” is the size of other’s “small.”

Yelp
It's ice cream in a festival like atmosphere during the high season. It's cute: the high school kids churning out lots of frozen treats. But having to wait in line for 25 minutes after facing a hellscape of a parking lot awash with Gen Z teens? For good- not great, not exceptional- yet basic, ice cream? Time honored ritual, sure. But not for me.

Yelp
AN ABSOLUTELY MUST DO! 5 STARS! DELICIOUS HOME MADE ICE CREAM & REAL WHIPPED CREAM @ AN OLD SCHOOL ICE CREAM PARLOUR. It's Time to jump into The TimeMobile & scour the Earth & take you to places from a different time that you won't believe still exist. We have set the dial to 1976 in the town of Dennis Port MA. If you're visiting Cape Cod, one of the places that you must go to if you're looking for ice cream is Sundae School. Sundae is spelled like the dessert, not the day of the week. They have been making home made ice cream since 1976. They have two locations one in Harwich & the other in Dennis Port. The Dennis Port store is my favorite. Their slogan is "Don't Skip Sundae School! They are the Winners of numerous awards over the years. You can order at the outside window. They have several outdoor dining areas to sit including under some shaded trees. You've got to go inside & check out their old-fashioned ice cream Parlour with marble tables & benches. Scope out every inch of this place or you might miss something. They have antique soda fountain memorabilia, relics of days gone by & vintage signs too. They have a beautiful 1901 soda fountain. They even have an old-fashioned player piano. Bring your quarters so you can feed the machine & for only .25 cents, it will light up and play a song for you. You'll also see school pendants hanging above the old barn. Those are from high school students who worked here & were headed off to their new colleges. Walk over to the the ice cream counter & check out the many selections. They have Free Samples, so be sure to ask & try some. Next to the register are their FREE signature Sundae School paper hats please take one. Now you don't feel like just a customer, but an employee who works here. Yup, You're now part of the family. They serve their standard flavors but have seasonal favorites too. They also have non dairy options here too. You can get your ice cream to go prepacked or have it hand packed also. If you dine inside they serve you the sundaes in old school ice cream parlour glassware. IT'S A REAL BLAST FROM THE PAST! The Peach, Pistachio & Coconut are just a few of my favorites here. They also have Free Parking. Yup, they have lines here because the Ice Cream is Delicious & It's a very Fun Place to Go! The Endres started the ice cream business in 1976 & all the family ended up working here at one time or another. After 47 years of hard but loving work, they decided to retire. Last year 3 of the former high school employees (Michael, Robert & Michelle) who worked here in the 1980's stepped up & bought the place. They wanted to keep the tradition going without missing a beat. DELICIOUS FUN ON CAPE COD THAT'S AN ICONIC INSTITUTION THAT'S SUNDAE SCHOOL! It used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget!

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Sundae school makes exceptional homemade ice cream and offers a genuine Cape Cod experience. I do recommend visiting during off hours, either during the week or at dinner time if you're just here for the weekend. Otherwise expect to wait a solid 45 minutes to order. This doesn't include the time to secure parking, and on weekend evenings peak summer there is ALWAYS a wait to park, Pro tip: when facing equally long lines outside vs inside, choose the inside line, they have more people working inside so it goes faster. Pro-top2: get a sundae! Cash only!

Paul Francis M.

Yelp
Yeah, still one of the most unique ice cream joints to get your dessert fix. Parking lot staffing working hard to keep the line moving & inside staffing moving like worker beed. I'll be here for one more night and I'll be sure to get another helping before I head home.

Tori C.

Yelp
i never order banana splits (i'm a strict kiddie cup girl), but my god this banana split is the best thing i've ever had. so good in fact i had to order it again this year. served in the old school glass, fresh ice cream flavors, loaded with homemade whipped cream, fruits, hot fudge, nuts... you can even wear that old school paper hat for free... what else could you want? yes it lives up to the cult status, yes the line is worth waiting for. yes i will be going back this weekend.

Noelle S.

Yelp
Super cute, ice cream shop on the Cape! It's gotta see huge crowds on the weekends cos they had stanchions ready for line control but we came on a weekday afternoon. The ice cream is so smooth and flavorful! Inside is all wood, very old school looking vibe. Cash only, and pretty big parking lot on site.

Katie D.

Yelp
My family has been coming here for at least 30 years! It's a classic parlor ambiance inside and also plenty of seating outside as well. I think they once told me that they offered the first Oreo ice cream ever - I'm not sure if that's really true, but it IS delicious! Personally, I think a mint oreo or grasshopper is even better though!

Michelle M.

Yelp
A must-try when down the Cape. This place gets busy at night, so I recommend coming in the afternoon. They are famous for their homemade whip cream, so this is what you must try. It's so rich and so creamy, I've never had anything like it before. Plus, they give you a REAL cherry. Their hot fudge is pretty amazing too. And, the ice cream rocks of course. Their typical sundae comes with two scoops of ice cream, but I suggest going with the single scoop sundae since everything is so rich. The decor is awesome too. When you step inside, you feel like you're back in an old ice cream parlor. They have a piano that you can insert quarters into that will play you a song. Plus, they have an old fashioned ice cream soda machine on display. Oh, and try to find your college flag on the ceiling if you're local! They have a gift shop too so you can take home a t-shirt! FYI -- cash only!

Ann E.

Yelp
Ice cream pies are amazing! The new apple pie ice cream is awesome! Love that they are open during the holidays!

John H.

Yelp
The long wait is worth it! Nothing hits the spot on a warm summer night like a proper ice cream sundae. Sundae school delivers all fresh and homemade ingredients that justify the higher prices. The line of cars spilling out of the parking looks intimidating but the army of parking lot attendants keeps things moving efficiently. The large families visiting will result in slow moving lines so have some one jump in line while you park. Note it is a cash only place but they have an ATM on site. There are also lots of tables and benches to enjoy your ice cream. This institution is a must try at the Cape!

Ashley W.

Yelp
The ice cream was surprisingly light and felicitar with strong flavors. Not too rich or heavy. The sampler bowl was perfect for the family. We got the ginger which was my favorite; pistachio which tasted more like an almost with a few nuts; peach which was super light and delightful for the summer; and the coconut which is always a fam fave. Super cute dark wood boat style decor. Spacious inside seating. Efficient service. The funky name flavors were all amazing.

D. P.

Yelp
I wasn't expecting this place to live up to the hype but it certainly did as we went twice in a week. The hot fudge is delectable, not too sweet or pudding like. You can taste the chocolate. They use whole walnuts and arent cheap or stingy on the toppings. The whipped cream is freshly homemade and not sweet, which I prefer as it complements the ice cream without overpowering it. Ive never seen an ice cream establishment use real cherries but this place does! That is a lovely surprise. For $9.45 a sundae it better be good and their ice cream doesnt disappoint. You can tell it is fresh and high quality. Cons: parking is a pain and there are long lines, I suggest go before dinner to avoid crowds. Plenty of picnic table seating.

Sarah V.

Yelp
What a great treat to enjoy some tasty treats after a long day exploring the Cape. Customer service was on point and the schoolhouse ambiance was super cute!

Alissa W.

Yelp
Love this place. The raspberry flavors are my favorite especially with fresh blueberries as the topping!! Fresh creamy ice cream! And yes, it's worth the drive!! If it's high season, they have things set up to anticipate long lines, but it's pretty well organized.

Ani G.

Yelp
Sunday school has some of the best ice cream on the cape. There is always a line at night but it is definitely worth the wait. They have a lot of sundaes and unique flavors to choose from. Their Oreo and mint Oreo (grasshopper) flavors are my favorite. Definitely a must try place if you're in the cape.

Patty W.

Yelp
Best ice cream on the Cape, maybe in Massachusetts. Multiple times during my trip I drove completely out of my way to get ice cream from here. Quintessential Cape Cod ice cream place. Black Raspberry is my absolute favorite. This place is a MUST STOP if you visit Cape Cod. We stop every time.

Alexandra C.

Yelp
Perhaps I'm missing something here.. Have been twice.. Once for sundae and the hot fudge was pretty good but nothing great. The ice cream I felt was average. Second visit just for ice cream and it was pretty good but not worth the super long wait. Though I must say the workers work hard and fast but just seems half the town goes there after dinner.

Kari J.

Yelp
Best ice cream! Service us very good, they handle the crowd very well. Small, cute, clean. Must stop!

Carmen C.

Yelp
It was very busy so be patient. The parking guys out there made it easier getting a parking space. I had cookie Oreo ice cream and it was delicious. Definitely will go back.

Tina K.

Yelp
Get there at an off time off day to avoid the long lines. Yummy ice cream, real cherries and homemade whip cream! Very nostalgic feel.

Nick P.

Yelp
2024 updated review. Allergy friendly freezer still exists and offering multiple flavors including dairy free and nut free options. As always the quality and service was top notch While it's always busy the staff keeps the line moving and the quality continues to be excellent. Plenty of seating inside outside with park style benches throughout the property.

Kay D.

Yelp
TIP: order your sundae takeouts inside. There are no lines CASH ONLY!!! When at the cape, you must eat at Sundae school. I've tried a fair amount of local ice cream shops at the cape, sundae school remains the best ice cream shop there is!! We stayed in Barnstable this year, and drove 25min to Dennis to get sundae school. The line outside is long and daunting, fear not you can go inside to place your order. I got very lucky when I went inside, there weren't any lines there to take orders. It took me less than 10min to place my order and get my sundaes to go. WHAT I ORDERED Kiddie cup Coconut ice cream w hot fudge Kiddie cup Vanilla ice cream w peanut butter sauce Absolutely delicious and worth the $12 sundaes lol

Matteo M.

Yelp
Ngl Sundae School IS SO OVERRATED like tbh it's not even that good but since it's overrated im still giving it 5 stars whoever puts it to 1 star ur dead the people love this place so much that if u put Sundae School 1 star u will get on the news somehow

Leah D.

Yelp
It is amazing! I would definitely recommend. If you are ever driving by or feeling like ice cream go! Get the hot fudge sunde with a classic whip cream. Great survice and so much more!

Nicholas B.

Yelp
Pretty decent ice cream place. I ordered a medium 'Cookie Monster' and it was pretty good, little above average for what I was expecting. Decent service, nothing remarkable. What keeps me from giving this place a better review is the fact it's a cash only establishment. It's 2024, there's no excuse to stay cash only. AND their ATM was out of order. If you don't have enough cash on hand, you're out of luck for the night.

Jessica M.

Yelp
Always a fun visit. Atmosphere is unique. Try to go during off peak times to avoid long lines (cars are typically lined up to enter the parking lot). Hot fudge sundae is my go to, but the family has never been disappointed with their choices. Cookie dough is probably the kids favorite.

Hp D.

Yelp
Such a bummer. I've been coming to the cape my whole life and sundae school was always an every other night trip for us. Last night we waited over an hour, with maybe 60 people in front of us. The line didn't seem that long but barely moved. People were ordering and then running individual ice creams out to their cars which again slowed everything down significantly. 3 smalls, a milkshake, and 2 sundaes was $53. The lids weren't on tight so some of them spilled on the way home. The ice cream was fine, not bad but nothing to write home about. I wondered how everything could have gone downhill so quickly but I did see that there are new owners so I guess that answers my question.

Janet L.

Yelp
The ice cream was the perfect amount of creaminess and sweet. I like the coffee Oreo. The inside was very cute with decoration!

Katie H.

Yelp
So upset after this evenings occurrence. We showed up and waited for parking, took awhile to get an open spot. Finally procured an available space and made our way inside. Everyone was very excited whom was in our party. It was only after waiting in line and getting to the counter did we see the sign " cash only" . So we asked where the atm was....and we're informed we could go down the road for an atm. After waiting for 15 minutes for an available parking space and with small children that needed to be strapped into car seats and maneuvered in and out of a vehicle, we left empty-handed and disappointed. The ice cream is worth the wait for a space and line...but get an atm if you're a cash only business.

Fatboy S.

Yelp
Didn't really live up to the hype for me. Didn't know that it was cash only until I got there. Their ATM machine was down. Ice cream was probably the most expensive out of any other ice cream shop I've been to. The ice cream itself was decent, but didn't blow me away. Customer service was just okay. 5 teenagers behind the counter talking while 1 or 2 others were doing all of the work. Didn't see any adults working. Wouldn't totally avoid - but wouldn't rush to go either.

Beth C.

Yelp
Love this place. Great ice cream and service. Fun place! We will definitely go back every time we are nearby.

Meghan O.

Yelp
There are no negatives about this place! The parking lot is a well oiled machine, they have employees as parking attendants to keep the chaos to a minimum. The line may be long but it goes quick. Cash only! The ice cream is delicious; all handmade. My favorite is the homemade blueberry sauce on top of a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This is my family's favorite spot on the cape.

Jason P.

Yelp
I have been going to Sundae School for over 40 years. We don't go anywhere else for that matter. On 8/1/24 we went and it was the worst experience ever. The lack of service from the well staffed establishment was absolutely sickening. This went from parking lot control being a nightmare. The bathrooms couldn't be more disgusting if they tried. The line taking over an hour and to top it off the servers not caring at all. This isn't one review of a place we don't understand, it's knowing how well it was ran to the new owners dropping the ball. It was clear how no one that worked there gave a crap about anything. It was an embarrassment of epic proportion. It's too bad that it has come to that. There was zero pride in the operation from a place that couldn't have done wrong. I wouldn't recommend anyone to go back as it's just not worth the high price and wait for now basic ice cream.

NellyD R.

Yelp
Great location. Awesome service crazy busy evenings. Definitely will come back. Lots of flavor options to choose from.

Gina R.

Yelp
This is my first time ever going to this establishment and I can honestly say this was the best sundae I've ever had. I ordered a coconut hot fudge sundae with whipped cream and a cherry. The hot fudge and whipped cream was both home made. Everything I had was delicious! I would highly recommend

Jon G.

Yelp
It is true when they say ice cream bring tears to the strongest man. Now I didn't shed a tear cause my blood line is akin to Chuck Norris but this place is the best place for ice cream in the entire USA. I've been taste sampling this place with my papa and now family for more years to count, and it slaps every time. Thank you to the staff for all that you do!

Theo J.

Yelp
We have been coming to Sundae school for years. It is a vacation rule to try and get ice cream once a day. Or latest trip to SS was at 9:30 on a Saturday night about 30 min before closing. Even though there were many folks still walking up and a line of cars waiting to pull into the lot everything was very well organized and they kept the wait wasn't long at all. The ice cream itself is amazing. It is constantly outstanding. Sometimes you don't appreciate how good something can be until you taste something mediocre or worse. (See my review of my less than satisfying ice cream on Block Island). After a short wait in line which allows me to change my mind on my flavor selections a few times I decided on my two favorites- Maple Walnut and Strawberry. These look very similar at Sunday school, not the mocha or pink that you see in other places. Just a creamy light colored scoop with flecks of strawberry and chunks of walnuts. The flavor of both was outstanding as was the creamy texture of the ice cream. They tasted exactly as they should have, fresh natural flavors. Don't take good ice cream for granted. I highly recommend Sunday school. (and a shout out to all of the young folks working there who are pleasant, fast and efficient)

Matt S.

Yelp
There's a reason they were recently the #1 ice cream in MA in a contest run by a local news outlets here in New England! An absolute must visit! All of their Oreo based flavors are phenomenal. We went 3 nights in a row! It does get busy after dinner time in the midst of the summer, but they have people parking cars and the line moves a lot faster than it looks, but I definitely would recommend walking if you're staying nearby. Just don't be that person that tries to drive on the wrong way to cut the line. Cash only also.

Mel G.

Yelp
Wow, this place is popular--as in multiple parking attendants popular, haha. Like others have mentioned, it's run very efficiently. Whenever there is a lemon option (ice cream or sorbet), I end up typically going for it, and that's what happened here--I ordered the lemon sorbet, and it was delicious. Like Del's but thicker, complete with lemon pieces. If I could somehow try to time arriving during a slightly off time, I think that would make the experience more enjoyable versus feeling a bit rushed bc there are so many folks. And--an opportunity to try some other flavors!

Alexandra P.

Yelp
Best ice cream ever with a true vacation vibe I'm the true Cape Cod Tradition Thus is a fun SWEET place

Maria G.

Yelp
Apparently this place is a well loved, nostalgia type of ice cream place- and the decor follows suit. It is your typical old fashioned ice cream place, quite nice. Also, yes, the ice cream is good. There is a smaller menu of har serve than most places, and they don't have the normal flavors like butter crunch, that's fine. It's homemade ice cream. Is it the best? I would say it's somewhere in the middle. This was my second trip. I don't actually remember what I got last time. This time I saw that they had blueberry ice cream sundae on special, with "fresh blueberries". Well, who could pass that up? 2 scoops of your choice, with fresh whipped cream, and a cherry. Now, I don't know who taught them to scoop- but I got 2 last time, and it was not this. Moving on... My "fresh blueberries", not so much. They were frozen blueberries in a sauce. The taste was pretty good, but the berries were frozen. So, not what I was expecting. Their fresh whipped cream was excellent of course, but, I asked for a little bit extra, and they said, there was a charge. Ok, it's good, so I'm thinking $.50? I think that sounds reasonable right? So after she put on an extra spoonful, and I'm not exaggerating, it was a spoonful, I was told it was $1.35. That seems a bit excessive, No? I got more than that for a pup cup which was $.75. So add that to the $6.99 for the sundae, it was a $9 sundae. Now for the cherry on top-pun intended... Luckily I'm always leery of anything that used to have a pit in it or may still have one... so, I gingerly tested it to see if it was a fresh cherry which I wouldn't have thought, since they were frozen blueberries. So it's a good thing I paid attention to it, as IT was fresh, and had I thought it was just a maraschino cherry, I would have lost a tooth. Yes I know, there are those people that swear by this place, and I'm not even saying I won't ever go back. However, I will never order a Sundae again, and pay $9 for it, when a quart of ice cream is the same price or less. Consistency is the key. Quality control, and making sure that everyone is charging the same, and giving the same sizes, each, and every time. People flock to Fielder's Choice in Maine, because no matter which location, no matter who serves you, you always get the same amount, are charged the same.

Rane R.

Yelp
It was just okay. We were really excited to stop here given the number of "Best of" lists this place has made. For starters, I'm expecting homemade waffle cones. The ice cream was just OK, it's light and not overly sweet, but it just didn't knock your socks off with flavor. I certainly would come try it again, especially the sundaes that do look very good, but the ice cream on its own is good, but it's just not five-star worthy.

Luana F.

Yelp
Home made whipped cream - do you need to know more?? I love this place! I wish the portion sizes were bigger because they use lids as bowls which is kinda weird however I'm addicted to their amoretto nut ice cream flavor with a little fudge and topped with whipped cream!! I have been trying not to come here everyday. I would say it's pricey because of the portion sizes but worth it in the flavors and quality.

Kevin B.

Yelp
Sundae School is a classic Cape Cod ice cream institution -- and for good reason! This is the original location and has been around for over 45 years. They have a huge assortment of flavors, including both classic ones and unique ones. Naturally the go-to order is the original hot fudge sundae. You can pick which ice cream it uses -- and I'd recommend a coffee flavor for a delicious balance with the fudge and whipped cream (they also had a special coffee brownie "mud river" flavor when we went, which was fantastic). We arrived at 6 pm, and we were the only customers, but they were obviously prepping for a busy evening, as there were about 15 employees, plus ropes already put up to manage a potentially long line. So if you come later in the evening, you may need to wait! Overall a tasty treat I'd highly recommend!

Kristen M.

Yelp
The wait can be long, but the ice cream is worth it! Also, the parking facilitators move cars pretty well to keep the customer flow reasonable.

Justine C.

Yelp
Plain and simple... the BEST OREO ice cream I've ever had. And during COVID19, I really appreciated their social distancing changes: they had a nice "snake" line, markers on the ground, and a menu staged by the line so people could prepare in advance as to not clog the walk-up window. Everyone was wearing masks, too. Great job; hope to visit again next year!

Katey G.

Yelp
If you come to Sundae School and leave without a sundae... well, don't do that. To take in the full scope of how amazing the sundae is, you need the whole thang. The ice cream is really really good, but for me it's all about the sundae toppings. The fudge - house made. It has a rich chocolate flavor with a lot of depth and the perfect viscosity. The whipped cream - freshly whipped with a touch of sugar. Nothing beats fresh whipped cream, and it made all the difference. It reminded me of the whipped cream at Peter Luger. The nuts - crispy toasted and salted, none of those stale nuts. The cherry - a real, fresh, massive, ripe, super firm PERFECT cherry (I ate sundae school twice so I know it's not a fluke). We need to find their cherry supplier. All these things are so simple but made all the difference. It's exactly how I'd want it to be, and I hugely appreciate their thoughtfulness in composing the perfect sundae.

Abby W.

Yelp
I think this might be the best ice cream I have had on Cape Cod. It was so creamy and had so many options for flavors. The line is worth the wait and does move pretty quickly. It is CASH ONLY!!

Dawn P.

Yelp
Was recommended by a friend and so glad! Luckily there was no line! Great choices ... creamey and delicious
