So I tend to be a bit more brutal on reviews of steakhouses than most places. Reason being is once you learn how to cook a good steak at home, you better bring it when I spend the money a steakhouse typically cost, You gotta nail the cook and bring something to the table I'm not going to get at home like a special seasoning, crust, or sauce, along with nailing the sides.
To start, we got loaded potato skins. Not something I normally order, especially from a steakhouse, but we just got done talking about TGIFridays and how we used to go for drinks and apps. Anyways good potato skins, but a bit pricey for the portion, 4 pieces for I think $15?
Prime Rib - Completely underwhelming. Ordered a medium rare 14oz and a friend got the 12oz medium. Looking at both, you really couldn't tell them apart from the cook for size. The only reason we knew whose was whose was because he asked for raw horseradish (I just assumed they were going to bring both to the table). The prime rib was red throughout and no curst at all at the edges. It looked like the prime rib was sous vide cooked and they forgot to sear it. the edges were generally unappealing. House of Prime RIb does a special seasoning crust, San Mateo prime does their blend on the crust, heck most do a salt crust. This had no crust at all.
Broccoli and carrots - No frills. Cooked well, little seasoning. At least it comes with sides. This one always comes with it and the other you get to choose
Creamed Spinach - This was the winner. We all agreed this was up there with one of the best, if not the best one we had.
Other notes on entrees. A friend got the NY Steak and gave us a piece to try. This was a much better execution than the prime rib. It had a good crust, cooked right throughout, and god seasoning. I didn't try the sauce. His lobster came out undercooked and the waitress apologized saying she would get a new one. Well think she forgot because she got close to the table, remembered, and quickly ran off. The 2nd lobster they comped, but it was also overcooked and rubberly. Oh well at least it was free, but none of us would order the lobster again because of it.
Mudpie - I can't remember the last time I had one. The waitress recommended it and we opted to try. This was the dessert to get for sure. The coffee ice cream was the perfect temperature. The toffee bits on top and bottom crust were so crunchy and tasty. That really elevated the dish. Would get again for sure.
Notes for next trip - Skip the prime rib, get the NY or a ribeye. Definitely get the creamed spinach and mudpie dessert.
