"This small sandwich shop in an alley in Shaw makes creative International combinations on its baguettes all day long — or until the bread runs out. Customers can choose from almost two dozen sandwiches named after cities like the Rome, Istanbul, or Seoul. There’s a second location in Georgetown — also in an alley." - Lisa Ruland

Meal: Lunch Day Visited: Thursday Budget: $20 Closest Station: Convention Center Reservation Needed?: N/A Payment: Cash; Credit Kid Friendly?: Yes English Menu?: Yes Each sandwich is named/themed after a city; very clever. We enjoyed our Beirut and Athens sandwiches. There aren’t really places to eat inside (four awkwardly placed countertop spots), but when it’s warm out, it looks like eating on the benches outside is an option. Service was fine, but not particularly friendly.

I visited this restaurant yesterday, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. The moment I walked in, the place didn’t feel clean or inviting—but I decided to give it a try based on a recommendation. The food itself didn’t taste good, and to make matters worse, I found a piece of plastic in my sandwich. That was the final straw. I won’t be returning, and I honestly don’t understand the positive reviews.

Google
HIGHLY recommend. They have so many unique subs, all served on the same perfect bread. It was really hard to decide because I saw at least 5 I wanted to try. One of their regulars who was picking up gave us some recommendations, she said everything was good it just depended on your mood. (Thank you, nice lady!) My husband took her advice and got the kingston jerk chicken sub and I had the Buenos Aires. The steak was cooked to perfection but the jerk chicken was our favorite. The subs are large enough to split but you wont want to. The staff was friendly and very fast. They do have a table inside and bench outside but this a take out place. We will definitely be back next time we are in town.

This sandwich spot is something special! Each sandwich is inspired by a different city, and every one has its own amazing flavor. We tried their Beirut and Athens, both tasted super fresh, and the combinations were so creative and delicious.

Google
Blink and you’ll miss it - this small sandwich shop is tucked away in the alleyway, but the selection can rival any major sandwich shop! Fresh, high quality ingredients paired with creative international ideas. The sandwiches may seem pricey, but it’s a ton of food that will make for worthy leftovers. If only there was more seating, as this place seems designed for takeout.

I was getting on a sandwich kick during a work trip to the DC convention hall area and was trying the different places around. Upon coming here, I only returned back to here. The options are wide yet specific. I say specific because the flavor in each are specific; each sandwhich feels like it takes your taste buds on a little roller coaster. The side dishes are equally as delicious. The curried potatoes were my favorite and I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s a little bit more expensive than some other places, but I wasn’t able to finish my sandwiches each time, kept returning and am actually wishing I could pick up a sandwich as I type this right now, so… All that, and the fact that it literally is a hole in the wall of a restaurant, it is a place you should at least visit for a meal once and watch it blossom into more. There is a little table where 2-4 people could eat, otherwise there are benches outside, or you will have to take it back wherever you came from to eat. Expect to wait like 5-15 minutes for your meal depending on the time of day, but do listen in for your order to be called out from inside as there is no outdoor PA sound system.

Google
Only complaint i have is the location. It's in an alley. So if you never been there, make sure you use your GPS and keep your eyes open, you will miss it if you blink. Also, this place is not a dine in restaurant. Order, get your Sandwich and leave! The Sandwiches...absolutely delicious. My favorite is the Lima. But they have plenty of other incredible sandwiches. If you are in the area, go and get yourself a sundevich!

Google
Solid sandwiches drawing inspiration from a wide variety of cuisines -- I love the premise of eating around the world (or at least the capital cities of the world) through sandwiches. I tried their Cairo, a vegetarian sandwich with fresh herbs, brined veggies, cucumbers, walnuts, and hummus. I opted to turn it into a salad (which I was so grateful you could do with any of their sandwich combos) and added smoked salmon and avocado. The portions are incredibly generous -- I swear they must have added an entire pack of smoked salmon! The ingredients were super fresh, making it an all-around tasty meal.

Yelp
I generally love this shop ever since it had a location in Georgetown. I usually order throughout the year and get the Paris or Buenos Aires and love them. My biggest issue is that they frequently turn off their delivery option on Uber Eats and Door Dash since those are the only ways to get delivery. I am across town and cannot quickly get over during their open hours. I beg that when they are open for business to not forget to turn on the delivery option for those who would love to either order ahead or get delivery.

Yelp
My favorite sandwich shop in DC! The sandwiches are quite large so I think the price is fair (usually $16). Great spot to stop in for lunch and they have so many options to choose from. Vegetarian and meat options. Surprised this place isn't talked about as it's just off the busy tourist path and not far from the White House. I got the Seoul sub, my go to! I need to try another one soon.
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
Came in for the Seoul sandwich today. Bread was incredible. Plenty of meat on the sandwich, and there was enough bulgogi to make my heart sing. The prices are high ($16 for a sandwich???) for the value, but the quality of the sandwich was hard to deny. Luckily, I had work money for this lunch, so those high prices were not an issue...which makes me wonder if I would have enjoyed this as much if I had to pay for it. As is, tasty stuff. If you are near the convention center and lunch is not included, give SUNdeVICH a look.

Yelp
Travel around the world via sandwich! I didn't see much said about the Nashville, so that's what I ordered. Despite not being popular in the reviews here, this is very delicious. The bbq flavor is not too overwhelming. The interior of the sandwich is on the saucy side, but plenty of pieces of chicken. The bread also holds everything together very well. Another time, I ordered one of the top choices, the Seoul. The meat is juicy and flavorful. The other ingredients, the kimchi, Asian slaw, and greens, balances out all the bulgogi. I got my sandwiches through a group order at work. Both came to me as a large log of a meal that left me quite satisfied. You can eat the whole thing in one sitting if you're really hungry, or good for saving the other half for later!

Yelp
Came here during lunch break to grab a quick sandwich. The Seoul sandwich was fantastic-- I'm usually skeptical about Korean-influenced/fusion foods, but this sandwich hit the spot for me. The kimchi, mayo, and galbi balanced each other extremely well! Service was a bit slow during lunch and ambiance was casual. I'll definitely be back to try out their other sandwiches!

Yelp
On a random Sunday I was looking for lunch and googled this place. It's located in a random alleyway...but the alleyway isn't all that random as it turns out. Historic Naylor court has a lot of interesting history so give it a look when you get some time. Anyhow, you have to walk down the alleyway a smidge then you get to SUNdeVICH. This place is SMALL. There's barely any seating or standing room so be prepared. You're greeted by a tall menu on the wall that has a somewhat expensive selection of sandwiches. I opted for the Kingston minus the slaw and mayo. This sandwich was huge and they did not skimp on the fillings. The jerk chicken was nicely grilled and it was apparent that it was grilled. The pineapple salsa combined with the jerk chicken added a lil kick, so I can only imagine how much better it would be with the spicy slaw. Again, it's a big sammich so unless you've got a voracious appetite, you're definitely going to save the rest for later. It's for this reason that I don't balk at the price, to have essentially two sammiches for 20 bucks isn't bad at all.

Yelp
I've visited this place twice in the past two weeks, and despite it being tucked away, the food is absolutely delicious! There's a wide variety of sandwiches to choose from, each bursting with flavor. My top two favorites so far are the Seoul Sandwich and the Tehran. The Tehran sandwich, in particular, brought back nostalgic memories from my childhood, making it a real hit for me. I'm excited to return and explore more of their sandwich options! Plus, the portions are generous, so there's always leftovers to enjoy later.

Yelp
Fun sandwich shop with options from all around the world. This location is tucked away in an alley so you definitely have to know what you're looking for. The shop itself is pretty small, with only one bar-style table against a wall with four chairs, so it's more of a place for takeout orders. The sandwiches are a decent size despite the price - I tried the Seoul sandwich which has bulgogi and kimchi. I really liked the bread, which had a nice crisp but wasn't crunchy/scraping up the inside of my mouth. They also definitely do not skimp on the meat, and I thought the bulgogi was well-seasoned although it would be nice sauteed with some veggies to give it more flavor. I was kind of disappointed by the rest of the sandwich though, as I did not think there was enough slaw and I could barely detect any taste of kimchi - basically the only thing I could taste was bulgogi. I also thought it was a bit dry and could have used more mayo. My friend tried the Kingston and felt the same way. While I appreciate that they're generous with the main ingredient, I feel like the overall balance of the sandwich could be better.

Yelp
A GREAT sandwich shop in DC! They have so many varieties to choose from so I believe everyone has their sandwich somewhere on the menu. I had the Milan which was a great late breakfast sandwich (we love egg and pancetta). Called ahead and was ready pretty quickly. A must try for a quick sandwich
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
The steak sandwich, unfortunately, fell short of expectations. The steak itself was the main culprit - it lacked the juicy, tender quality expected from a good steak sandwich. Instead, it felt dry and chewy, suggesting it may not have been the freshest cut. While the other components were okay, the subpar steak significantly detracted from the overall experience.

Yelp
Finally had a chance to take out some sandwiches for lunch from SUNdeVICH! We ordered the Seoul sandwich, the Madrid sandwich, hummus & chips for around $40. The Seoul sandwich was great! It came with bulgogi, slaw, kimchi & garlic Mayo. The sandwiches travelled well for takeout and are huge & super filling. Their sandwich offerings are pretty unique, so I look forward to trying something different next time!

Yelp
Enjoyed my first time experience at SUNdeVICH. We stop by before attending an event at the convention center and it was super easy to get to although if you didn't know where you were going, it could be hard to miss since it's tucked back in a little alley. They had so many delicious sounding options, and I eventually opted for the Athens (lamb, red onions, tomato, greens, tzatziki) which was a great choice! The lamb was perfectly cooked (no chewy or fatty bits), and the sandwich itself was huge. It was nice that they cut it in half because I ate half then and saved the other half for later, as it was super filling. One thing to note is that they don't have any inside seating, but they do have some outdoor benches right outside the shop, so just beware if you're going in the winter or on a rainy day.

Yelp
I stopped in for lunch after being very impressed by the online menu. I ended up ordering the Buenos Aires which has steak, sautéed onions, and chimichurri sauce. The sandwich was $16 but was basically big enough for two people to share. The roll was incredibly good and the ingredients were very high quality. Just FYI - This is mainly a carryout spot. They have one high top table in the corner with 4 stools. Will definitely return to try other sandwiches!
google avatar

Lee K.

Yelp
These are amazing sandwiches, we've been to two of the locations and each nailed it. I wouldn't give any stars for the customer service, one of the locations had a sign that essentially said do not talk to the employees. You basically handle the ordering online and pick it up rather quickly when you get there. Very unique sandwiches that span across the globe....only 4 stars vs 5 because they cannot even be bothered to say hello.
google avatar

Ronald B.

Yelp
A great spot right down between the alley that offers an array of sandwiches. No seating area, just step through the single door and place your order as you wait. So far, I've tried the Seoul and Buenos Aires, both very delicious. Simple ingredients yet complex and robust flavors as each bite delivers a wonderful taste.
google avatar

Lucy B.

Yelp
Pretty good sandwiches, a bit pricey in my opinion. Fun sandwich combos, names after common international cities. The service was fine, a little underwhelming but nothing worth complaining about. It is important to note this shop lacks indoor seating. Purely takeout. It would be nice to have a few seating options indoors but alas.
google avatar

Devon K.

Yelp
Sundevich is stupid delicious. The hours aren't my favorite, and they can run out of ingredients for the sun they want, but it's an absolute winner. Located right in Shaw from online order to pickup is only about 15 minutes. My favorites are the Havana, Athens, Seoul, and surprisingly the Memphis. The bread is crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. The meats are incredibly fresh and each sandwich has a variety of toppings. You can change and sub certain ones. I recently had the Beirut which wasn't my favorite but still delicious. Sandwiches run at about $15 but can easily (and usually is for me) two meals. The dips are good. I typically get the tzatziki which also comes with a small side of bread ends for dipping. Whether you're looking for picnic food or a filling lunch this is the place to go.
google avatar

Asha S.

Yelp
I ordered the Rome with extra capers! I am a deli lover and have always appreciated a good sub or sandwich. I feel like the culture has died out here in DC but this place is reviving it for sure. Ingredients are super fresh and great quality! The bread..... the bread is the STAR. I need to know who bakes their Demi baguettes because they are top tier. Not to mention they have so many options to choose from! Can't wait for the weather to pick up! Perfect picnic food
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Food was terrific. This is a bit of a hidden jem in a DC alley. Be prepared that you are not eating there.
google avatar

Ben T.

Yelp
Best sandwiches in all of DC, the hardest part is choosing which one you will pick. I have gone through phases where I have different go-to orders. Love how the menu is based on different countries. I absolutely love the Kingston, Beirut, and Seoul.
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
Great range of sandwich options. Especially creative options based on different world cuisines. Relatively fast although they do get busy. I usually take it to go since it's mostly just a counter.
google avatar

Spiridoula R.

Yelp
The food was unique and delicious! The service was fast and perfect for a short lunch period. The ambiance inside is casual, clean, and friendly. Just make sure you have your phone handy to order.

AE S.

Yelp
Sundevich has amazing food, with great flavors! Would definitely recommend & order again!
google avatar

Jeremy P.

Yelp
Well worth the walk from my hotel of about a mile. Had the Athens sandwich and it was really big and on point. If I had eaten breakfast I would not have eaten the whole thing. It was plentiful w meat and everything else. Service was fast and friendly. Neat little place to grab a sandwich and go. No seating.
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
Dry and hard bread. Flavorless food. I do not know what happened. They used to be good but now...not so much. They are nice people who work there.
google avatar

Logen F.

Yelp
Pretty tasty but I feel like the bread to meat ratio is off. The bread isn't the best and I think they don't put enough meat in their sandwiches compared to the size of the bread. I always order ahead and they never seem to be ready when I get there. I always walk in and they are empty but they still haven't made my sandwich yet.
google avatar

Cyrus A.

Yelp
WOW! What a strong recommendation from a friend who lived in DC for quite some time. SUNdeVICH did not disappoint, with an enticing menu and a sandwich that easily lived up to the hype. The Buenos Aires was perfection! Fresh bread, well cooked steak, delicious sauce. It was all there. I can't wait to go back and try other options next time I'm in town. If you're lucky enough to be near this place, do yourself a favor and try one of their offerings. So so good! PS - all of their sandwiches are available as salads too, for the bread-averse among us.

Robert O.

Yelp
Great sandwich!! Wonderful baguettes! Nowhere to sit but a few benches outside. Will definitely be back.

Houston B.

Yelp
Overall the place had a cool vibe and a friendly staff, so I give them a 4/5 overall. I would love to go back and try more of their stuff, but for now... I went there specifically for the Cuban sandwich, as I do Cubano reviews on YouTube (goofy, I know, but I love these things). I thought the sandwich was pretty good, but not a true Cuban (to be fair, they call it the Havana). The pork tasted and was textured more like something you would find on a BBQ-type sandwich. There didn't seem to be any ham, which is one of the main ingredients on that typical Cubano. It was good, but again, a little atypical taste, at least for me. Cool spot though! Not sure the link will work on Yelp, but here is a video of my review, if interested (spoiler alert- I scored it an 6.7, which is about average): https://youtu.be/GWkgou1Iil8

Yelp
SUNdeVICH is still one of my favorite sandwich places in DC. It's been awhile since I last visited, but it's still as good as I remember. My usual order is the Buenos Aires. The steak is cooked medium and is super tender. There's a good amount of sautéed onions and the chimichurri is spread on the bread evenly. The bread itself has a nice crunch when you bite into it, but is also soft on the inside. I've also tried the Istanbul, which is also good. I enjoy the ground beef in the sandwich as it has tons of flavor. This location is in an alley, so you might miss it at first. Street parking is available.

M K.

Yelp
I had the Beirut and Kingston. I wish there some sort of sauce in the Kingston, it was a bit more dry than I expected. I could see it being bomb as a bowl but the pineapple is a good touch.
google avatar

Anthony I.

Yelp
A truly spectacular find thanks again to yelp. Had the buenos areas and it was fantastic. The bread was absolutely delicious. The steak was perfectly cooked the onions wonderful, and the chimichurri was the perfect blend of spice and freshness.
google avatar

Marc M.

Yelp
Fantastic. What great variety and freshness on subs. You can go in any direction with the crazy variety. We usually split one as they are big, but a must try. Need to look down the ally, a bit hard to find, but worth it.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. Have been coming here since they debuted. Love the play on sandwiches from small towns in the Middle East. Great flavor. Sandwiches are decently sized. Staff is super helpful and friendly. Can't wait to go back. I'd recommend going with more than one person so you can try a few of their sandwiches. Otherwise, you just won't be able to pick one!
google avatar

Shantal W.

Yelp
The Seoul Sandwich I had today for lunch was incredible! I loved how flavorful it was. The meet was tender and they packed the sandwich full of it. Love the topping that gave the sandwich an extra pop of flavor in your mouth. My only complain is the type of bread they use. It's good but hard. I'm not sure if you can change that but I love that you can make any sandwich a salad. I'll be back to try something for sure!
google avatar

Keila B.

Yelp
The sandwiches here are amazing. I love the Milan...so flavorful. I also love the Tehran because mortadella, in my opinion, is the most underrated sandwich meat. More mortadella please! The Madrid is also excellent. I visit my sister in Shaw often and this place is always one of our stops.
google avatar

David Z.

Yelp
Pretty good sub. They offer many different unique flavors for the roll with a country theme spin to it. If you're looking for a plane turkey N cheese sub, this place is not for you. Rolls have too much bread for the proportion of protein etc.
google avatar

Darren W.

Yelp
Incredible sandwiches. The wait times to get our food seems a little long for 3pm on the weekend when the restaurant was mostly empty. But the food was incredible, would certainly return.
google avatar

Naina Z.

Yelp
Wow! How have I not been here before?! This is such a hidden gem in Logan Circle (literally, it's quite hidden in an alley). This tiny shop (takeout only) was bustling with activity on a Saturday at 2pm I had the Seoul and my friend had the Lima. First of all, the sandwiches are HUGE! Like huge huge. One is enough for two people and to be full. For my sandwich, the beef literally tasted like it had been marinated for hours and could be served at a KBBQ restaurant. Great mix of flavours and textures. The bread also tasted fresh and saw it was made by an external bakery. Expect a bit of a wait for your sandwich to be made. Excited to try more sandwiches here!
google avatar

Keith S.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious sandwiches; reasonable pricing. Note- this is really a take out place, though in good weather there are two benches outside where you could eat. I had a sandwich The Oslo which was salmon lox, red onion, capers, and tomato. My wife had The Paris which she also enjoyed. It looks like this is a popular place. My only minus would be that they don't offer coffee or tea - bottled drinks only. Next day I had a Mexico City sandwich.
google avatar

Brianda V.

Yelp
This placed is tucked away in the alley. I had the Lima and it was absolutely delicious!

Hana T.

Yelp
The BEST sandwich ever. Can't wait to try it again! High quality food for a good price. I wish they had more stores in different cities.
google avatar

Phuong O.

Yelp
Popped in for lunch today with the bro before awesome con and all I can say about this place is that it's awesome. We ordered the Seoul and Kingston subs. Both subs were delicious in their own way. The Seoul had that Korean bulgogi taste to it, I didn't really tasted the Kim chi. The Kingston was good but the chicken was a little dried and there was way too much sauce. I definitely want to come back to try their other subs. Prices are a little steep but it's D.C. for ya, there's also barely any place to sit if they are packed and that's the only down fall off this place.
google avatar

Francis R.

Yelp
Pleasant surprise! This one is situated in the alley not really visible from the street. They offer fresh made sandwiches that seem to be inspired from cuisines all over the world and ranging from $11-$13. While it might seem pricey, it's definitely close to having two sandwiches as the size is easily a footlong if not bigger. I ended up going with the Havana sandwich which was essentially a cuban with juicy tender roasted pork. It was delicious! In addition to sandwiches, they do offer some sides, salads, chips, and a variety of drinks. The space itself is really casual and you can opt to eat in at their communal table or take to go. Anyways, like I said this one was a pleasant surprise! Wish i had more time to try more of their sandwiches. 'Til next time, cheers! 285/365

Yelp
What I ate: Istanbul salad Visit date: October 4, 2019 First time? Yes. Who goes to a sandwich place and orders a salad? I do. :) Getting enough greens while traveling is tough so I take every chance I get so get a nice leafy mix in my meals. Plus, I confirmed that they don't make their own bread so I wasn't super inclined to get a sandwich. I ordered the Istanbul and it was delish! The Istanbul comes with ground lamb and beef, sumac, onion, tomato, fresh herbs, and tzatziki. All the ingredients were so fresh, the beef/lamb was so flavorful, and the tzatziki brought it all together. For salads, you can select the sandwich sauce or opt for a different dressing. So good. To quote Ariel, "I want more." I could work my way down the menu, and if I was local I totally would. This SUNdeVICH location is in an alley and has a few indoor seats. Take away seems more popular.
google avatar

Omar Z.

Yelp
Best subs I ever ate. If anyone I know is going to the DC area I recommend this spot. Unique take on subs, perfect bread, and great ingredients.
google avatar

Steph G.

Yelp
Awesome little sandwich shop serving lots of different flavors. We opted for the Kingston and Lima- would devour both again. Hidden on an alleyway with renovated stables- pretty cool architecture. Five star lunch spot!

Yelp
Came here on Friday after Thanksgiving. It was pretty quite for a 2pm, then again so was DC. The services was great. They were fast and the order was ready real quickly. The food is good, but not worth the price you get for it. For the price I paid I could have gotten the ingredients myself and made at least 2 1'foot sandwiches. Would i go here again, if I had to yea. But I wouldn't go out of my way to go here. Again nothing wrong with what I got, which by the way it was the Capri. The picture attached is half of the sandwich cuz I forgot to take a before picture. My sister got the Buenos Aires. The sandwiches names are cute.
