The 18 Best Restaurants in Cape Town, South Africa | Eater

"Dubran is better known for Indian food, but you don’t need to cross the country to enjoy samosas and curries. Chef Seelan Sundoo, who has three spots in the city, offers a flavor-packed menu with dishes like lamb kebabs, Kerala roasted chicken, and prawns from the South Coast cooked in a rich tomato sauce. Perhaps the most quintessentially South African dish is the bunny chow, a hollowed out half loaf of white bread loaded with chicken, lamb, prawn, or beans. Originated in KwaZulu-Natal, it’s delicious, warming, and like nothing else in South Africa." - Mary Holland

Something has changed! Not at all like it used to be. Food: the starters were good, samoosas and Puri Patha, tasty, but quite pricey for what you get. We ordered the lamb curry off the bone and it arrived on the bone, when rice comes in a shared portion which is quite sneaky and the butter chicken was definitely lacking in flavour and texture. The roti was not soft and fresh as one would expect. Wine items not in stock and the server didn't know anything about what to replace it with. Service: service was average, only one server on a Fri night makes it difficult when it comes to taking care of the entire restaurant. Atmosphere: cosy and welcoming. Probably my last time visiting this establishment.

The worst curry I've had. The beetroot curry was a nice change but had very little curry flavour. The Dhal was even worse. No flavour and so watery I'm not sure how it was allowed to leave the restaurant. I guess I'm lucky that an hour after eating I was getting sick and got it out of my system...

Ordered the Dahl and Beetroot curry. Beetroot was fine but not hot enough despite ordering the hot. The Dahl was so watery that not even the rice could absorb it. Neither dishes were as hot as we had anticipated.

Had the Hammas lamb curry off the bone with basmati rice and some rotis🍛. Succulent soft lamb in spicy sauce which had heat but was not overpowering. Delicious and flavorful. Great service all around by the staff as well.

Most veg dishes were out of stock . My wife order was average bean and potato roti. My lamb bunny was most disappointing only two pieces of tough meat , two potatoes , lots of bland gravy and stale bread . It looks like they don’t cook on site but reheat what was delivered.

Our time at Sundoo was amazing. This place is very nondescript and can almost be easily missed as its rather small. But don’t let this fool you. Upon arrival we were soon to our table and the cozy atmosphere was further enhanced by load shedding which meant candlelit table adorned the restaurant. Our server was polite and very helpful and offered suggestions as well. For starters we had chicken and lam samosas to share for the table. This was an amazing treat and was sign of things to come. Served with a coriander chutney which was amazing. For mains I opted for the Hummas Lamb. Your choice of boneless or bone in should be an easy as bone in is the clear winner in my opinion with that added flavor vorm through. If you’re worried about spiciness then I would recommend going medium as this brilliant. I ordered the hot version (the middle of the pack choice) and it can easily overpower a novice. The curry they make has a depth of flavor that supports the spice and doesn’t fall away. Our mains were served with rice which I missed on the menu but also I didn’t ask. We ordered rotis for the table and a serving of jeera rice. In hindsight not needed but was amazing as well. In summary I would recommend this place and I will gladly be back as I believe a have now found my curry place in Cape Town. Give it a try and enjoy this experience

I’ve had the pleasure of dining both in & out at Sundoo a few times, in every instance they have delivered with such intense flavor, I would find it difficult to articulate a suitable sentence of tasty goodness. Be sure to try the samosas, rotis and clay oven curries. There is not much I can fault, even their IPA was exceptional 🍺 Ciao ~ SB 🍛

After getting names off Google for Indian restaurants in Cape Town, last night it was the time to try #Sundoo_Newlands. I ordered the Tarka Dal (which came with a portion of rice, sambals and carrot salad), to go. I ordered the Vindaloo spice level. When I got home and dished the Dal and Rice, my word the Dal was unbelievably, excellent. Just like any of the top places from back in Durban or like home cooked. Finally found a go-to place in Southern Suburbs for my favourite food, viz. Dal. Most definitely will be repaying this restaurant a visit, again. I can see why they won some food award.
