"...Sundown you better take care
If I find you been creeping 'round my back stairs...."
Gordon Lightfoot, anyone? Not sure if that particular ditty inspired the naming of this particular pub, . Then again, one hopes it wasn't based on the known phenomenon of those afflicted w/dementia, to wander ceaselessly after the lights go out (see: Sundowner's Syndrome). either. We wouldn't want anyone mistaking our loved ones for zombies........ non?
I went to Sundown Pub formerly "Jack 'n' Jerry's" for decades, or should say, returned to the Sundown Pub after many years, w/a specific purpose: to try to find out what they might know, at this point, about their old tenant and next door neighbor, Mike Brown aka, he of Czaba's BBQ glory. I wanted all the details they could afford--- did they know where he is now, and more importantly, are there any plans in the future, however remote, of his returning? Alas, I made predictably little headway, as both barkeeps and patrons alike knew nothing of this "Czaba's". I wondered briefly who was the more unfortunate----they, for having never experienced the joy of Czaba's BBQ, or I, for having once ate of it, heartily, and frequently, trusting that it would just always be there for me, only to have him vanish into thin air unexpectedly, leaving us all forever deprived afterward?
I did not have long to ponder such imponderables, for on the chalk board menu at The Sundown, at the very bottom, I couldn't quite believe my eyes. Dill Pickle Soup! I'd only had this concoction at one other place before---also a pub, the sister store of the Cheerful Tortoise, now defunct. It had been many years--- probably close to ten, since last partaking of this magnificent yet highly unlikely devilry. Now I was faced with a real dilemma: do I share this knowledge w/the rest of the cyber-world, or try to keep it all to ownself, selfishly attempting a futile cornering of the known pickle soup market? Really this was a no-brainer: if nobody knows about it, how can they try it, and heap praises on the deserving Sundown folks, thus assuring that more soup will be made in the future? This rendition of the soup was cream based, just like before, w/plentiful taters and slices o' pickle. Dill-icious. You might even say it'll Pickle yer fancy, so have at it. Attack!
The service was prompt and friendly enough @ the Sundown, the clientele had some unmistakable markings of the Hipster (Buddy Holly glasses, beards, and snatches of conversations about obscure bands---probably THEIR obscure bands abounded). Yet the overall tone of the place was laid back, understated. If there was any douche-baggery, I somehow managed to miss it, gorging myself as it were, on pickle soup. I wanted to order a second bowl, but alas, was simply too full.
If there were one area for potential improvement, I have to agree w/other Yeeps in review for the Sundown that mentioned the watery drinks. I'm not looking to get annihilated, but c'mon now! I am not one of those needy, pain-in-the-arse patrons, I have not once in my life sought to be comped for anything, anywhere, though I'm aware I may have been justified in doing so, a time or two. I'm also a pretty swell tipper, if I do say so. I'm confident the watery drink problem is just a temporary, regrettable bit of tin foil in the cosmic radar that shall presently be amended.
As I was leaving The Sundown, I wondered if mgt. would let us hang a sign w/a Picture of ol' Mikey Brown on their wall, w/the caption, "Have you seen THIS man?" The Sundown is rumored to be opening back up the restaurant side of the building (ie, where Czaba's used to be) in the near future. Dare I to hope this could be signaling the long-awaited return of Czaba's? Something tells me probably not. Lord what a loss to humanity!
"Sundown, I think it's a sin, when I feel like I'm winning when I'm losing again...."
