Where to Get the Best Mooncakes in Los Angeles and Orange County | Eater LA

"I note modern Taiwanese bakery Sunmerry offering limited-edition mooncakes in nine flavors, including a lava series (chocolate, oolong matcha, ube milk, milk tea, mocha coffee), a Cantonese series with lotus seed and red bean, and a red-bean-with-salted-egg-yolk option, sold individually or as sharply packaged gift sets." - Kristie Hang

The worst cake I’ve ever eaten. We ordered a taro pudding cake and a matcha one. The cream on top of both cakes was stale and had hardened. The pudding tasted like cheese. The matcha one was even worse—my boyfriend took one bite and threw it away.

Google
I have been frequenting the place from time to time just to go for the Garlic Parsley bread. 5 whole pieces for only 9. Great deal on it. Can’t get enough of it.

Google
This bakery has seats for dine-in, so you can enjoy it leisurely after buying bread and drinks. The price of the bread is considered mid-range, and there are many varieties. The taste is normal but not outstanding. If you just want to taste a light snack, it is also a good choice. In addition, cakes and pastries are also served here. Although I have never tried them, the cakes are quite beautiful in appearance and have a certain appeal.

I finally got this place’s too go too go. So let’s see if they’re pretty good eh or ew. It came with a loaf of their white bread, a chocolate concha, matcha red bean cream cheese bagel, blueberry cream cheese bagel, chocolate bagel, everything cream cheese bagel, and a coconut raisin bread. The white bread was light and had a nice milk bread flavor. The concha was filled with sweet chocolate, had a crumbly top, but was a bit dry. The bagels weren’t really bagels. They were pretty much normal bread bread. They did have very good flavor tho. Like the blueberry one actually had a berry flavor and the matcha one had an earthy fragrance to it. The coconut raisin bread was soft and had good coconuty flave with lots of toasted coconut for texture.

Google
I would have liked to give them a much better rating but they forgot to bag some cake slices I ordered and I haven't been able to get in contact with them, so unfortunately it is what it is. The bread itself is really good, especially if you warm it up a little before eating, and the drinks look and taste nice. The cakes also look very cute and I was excited to try them, but when I looked in my bag I realized they weren't there. I tried calling them multiple times to find a remedy, but nobody ever answered. It's a shame as their service is really the only thing that needs improving.

Google
Taiwanese bakery similar to 85c bakery. I went in the afternoon on a weekday and place was pretty empty. Everything was pretty good but the thin cookies in the plastic containers are extremely delicious. Easy to park around the plaza.

Google
Love this place!!! Their pastries are actually not too sweet and just right. I love getting their strawberry cream cake and the salted cream milk tea/black tea/green tea. All the other pastries are also very delicious. Highly recommend a visit!!!

Yelp
I had no idea there was a Sunmerry Bakery in this plaza but hey since there was one, I can't just walk past without "accidentally" buying sweet treats from here!! There is an underground parking structure for your convenience!! Unfortunately, like every Sunmerry after 5 p.m., the best goodies had already been taken by other pastry fans, so my dreams of a matcha mochi donut died on the spot. But the mango mochi donut was just as yummy!! The rest of the pastries were fresh, delish, and absolutely enabling my dessert weekness!! The best part about this bakery is that their pastries are not too sweet, just delicious!!!

Yelp
Nice location inside a plaza. I was starving so I got a chicken cheese bread. While the prices are cheap the chicken cheese bread was inedible. I've tried their other bread before and I would just stick to the sweet stuff. I took one bite of my chicken cheese bread and I knew it wasn't fresh. While I know the bakery prides themselves in fresh bread I'm not sure this one has. The bread itself had a rancid chicken smell almost as if they used almost expired chicken to make it because the chicken was not fresh even the American cheese couldn't cover up the flavor of bad chicken. It was not fresh and I was starving but I couldn't even take another bite and I had to toss it out.

Yelp
Sunmerry has multiple locations and their breads are incredibly soft and stay fresh and tasty throughout the entire week. During the holidays, they go all out with festive promotions, like a spin-the-wheel game where you can win treats (I once got a free mini mooncake!), and limited-time holiday-themed goodies. One thing that really sets this bakery apart from other Asian bakeries in the area is their bagels as they're filled with a delicious cream cheese center that's super satisfying. Definitely a must-try!

Yelp
I love this bakery a lot of their sweet breads are delicious. Why 3 stars its because I found out what I thought was butter was really palm oil/ vegetable shorting instead. They are delicious but not so good ingredients.

Yelp
Located in the middle of Atlantic Times Square. Like any bakery, you'll get more cakes and baked goods at the start of the day. Usually they have some kind of deal with their pastries and their drinks (BOGO, special discount days for certain days of the week, etc.) There's seating inside and outside as well. Staff is friendly. When we went the trash cans were full, so I can only imagine what it's like when there's an event going on at the square. When we went later on in the day on a Sunday, they were out of Thai tea, so I had to get a sea salt tea instead, which was alright. We were able to adjust sweetness and ice level at the very least. My friends matcha milk was more milk than anything. The lava pastry we got was decent. Overall, it's alright and I'm just okay with the Sunmerry franchise in general.

Yelp
I feel like this one location lacks oversight. Just bought an item on 11/20 and item has freshness date for 11/24. Cut it open, and it's moldy. So gross. Never again. Watch out what you buy here, they are repacking food that are over dated.
google avatar

Yelp
Has so many interesting baked good choices. I would compare it to 85 degrees but better. I've also had their cakes multiple times and would prefer it over the 85 degree bakery cakes. I think they have more interesting baked good too where they are just fusion takes on the classics and it's a good take! I judge the taste on the bolo bao though and it was disappointing haha. Cookie wasn't crispy enough and the whole thing just got soggy fast. Bread could have been better as well. I'm giving it 4 stars none the less since cakes and other things were decent.
google avatar

Vera L.

Yelp
They have bogo drinks during the week. Saturday was Mango lemonade which was pretty refreshing during a summer day. A tad bit sweet but you could ask to adjust the sweetness level. They have a bunch of buns and cakes too!
google avatar

Rose L.

Yelp
Ube conchas are AMAZING! Very rich and not too sweet. Excited to try drinks and others further down.

Yelp
Service: excellent. I was able to place a phone order for my cake easily. The lady was very nice. I ordered the Berry Party. The cake itself was good. It was a blueberry yogurt with a vanilla cake. It was really soft and fresh. It was good. I think my feedback is more for the decoration skills. I wish it was more detailed and hoped it would look like what I saw on their website. The drawing on my cake was pretty bad compared to what's advertised online. It was laughable. Looked like I ordered a cake from Temu

Yelp
We've been here a few times for their bread and pastries. Their food here is super yummy! I really like their portugese egg tarts. The workers here are also super nice. Definitely my go to bakery in the area :)

Yelp
We visited this bakery because the Street Churros we wanted to go was closed today. We walked into a clean hall with baked goods on one side. Croissants look very good, but we decided just to get Americano coffee since we just ate and didn't feel like eating more... The girl at the counter was nice and made our coffee right away. P.S. This shopping plaza is now like a ghost town. 75% of the stores are vacant. I hope this place along with Street Churros survive.

Yelp
Solid stop on a recent visit to LA. Looking for a boba and bao spot to pick up some drinks and snacks and found Sunmerry on Yelp. Both baos and drinks were good, but not the best I have had. Positive is they seems super fresh on our visit. My pineapple char siu bao was fresh, but the filling seemed to be all sauce and very little meat. They have buy one get one drink specials daily in the summer so that was a good value. Located in a huge complex with ground floor commerical, what I assume is residential apartments on top and underground parking garage. Overall a solid four star visit.

Yelp
I have tried this bakery in Arcadia a couple of times and recently tried this Monterey Park location. The bakery is similar to 85c with an interesting selection of baked goods and drinks. During this visit I tried an assortment of their breads. Savory flavors appeal to me more so I really enjoyed the garlic bread. I've tried a few flavors of their mochi donuts. I took the croissants and buns to somebody's house, and they seemed to enjoy it. Service is quick and efficient.

Yelp
I visited to get a few pastries for work. They have a wide variety of pastries and cakes. Service was fast and excellent. Seems like a nice place to study or meet up with friends. I will be back to try their cakes and drinks.

Yelp
I visited this bakery on a Friday as soon as they opened. I ordered the Vietnamese coffee and it was a huge let down. I asked the the person who took my order if they phin drip their coffee like a traditional Vietnamese coffee or they use espresso, she said they brew the coffee here which I assumed meant Phin drip but it was literally just brewed watered down coffee that wasn't even good. Plus it has some granular pieces in it which I'm not even sure were coffee grounds and it was bitter water down and just not good. The baked goods were okay, similar to stuff at 85 degrees bakery. I enjoyed the brioche bread but the double chocolate croissant tasted off, it didn't taste like a buttery croissant.

Yelp
We found this great bakery similar to 85c bakery while in Monterey park. They have a variety of breads and cakes, as well as various beverages. We tried a variety of breads such as their Oreo Choco, Garlic parsley, and Pudding Brioche. Since it is almost Thanksgiving, they had a bread that looked like a turkey! Very creative. All the breads were so fresh, soft, with just the right amount of sweetness. The bakery is very spacious and clean with a lot of seating areas. The staff were great and helpful. We'll definitely come back when in the area and try some different items. Happy Nom Nom!

Yelp
I always get my drinks, pastries here. Ofc for convenience and their friendly service.

Yelp
I ordered 2 drinks, both were Ube Taro Smoothies except 1 was 50% sugar and the other was 30%. As I was standing by the pick up counter, I was watching them make it. They batched the whole thing into 1 blender and poured into 2 cups, which were labeled 50% sugar and 30% sugar. Seems a bit shady to save time and money on their end but not make the drink according to the customer order. I asked about this when I picked up my drink, but he just acted confused and brushed me off. On top of that, the drink tasted terrible, just mixed powder and wasn't even a smoothie. Never again.
google avatar

Iris K.

Yelp
We usually stop by while at Atlantic Times Square and there's always something fun to eat or drink. The atmosphere is inviting and the pastries nicely priced. An added bonus this summer was the BOGO drink special!
google avatar

Sabrina S.

Yelp
It's the best location, clean and spacious and workers are nice. The AC is cold and a nice spot to catch up with friends. Parking is easy! Tasty bread.
google avatar

Joyce L.

Yelp
Buns are fresh. I like their black tea because it's refreshing after a long day. Service is great and fast. Parking is located on the basement, either enter the plaza on Hellman or by the AMC on Atlantic Blvd. Place is nice and clean. Shall be back again

Yelp
I discovered this bakery through the too good to go app. I purchased a surprise bag for $5.99. The bag I got came with a loaf of sliced wheat bread, brioche bread, chocolate croissant, chocolate concha and a bread with green onions that tasted garlicky. It was such a great deal. All of the bread still tasted fresh and we're very soft and chewy. I would definitely return here to try their other items. The prices of their bread and pastries are a bit cheaper compared to other similar bakeries. Customer service was good. Only one person working the cashier, but the line moved quickly. The bakery is in the Atlantic Time Square Plaza, which has a parking structure. This plaza gets busy during weekends and peak hours, so finding parking may be difficult.

Yelp
First time being here, everything looks amazing. Got the mochi cookies and cream, it's amazing.

Yelp
I've always walked by this bakery but finally tried some of their breads and tea. I was surprised to see that they had Christmas breads for the holiday. They were super adorable!! There was also good variety of other flavors such as taro mochi, matcha croissant, and savory bread with egg and ham. You'll for sure find one that you'll like. For drinks, I tried the freshly squeezed lemon iced green tea which quenched my thirst and it was great to be able to request for less sugar. There's also plenty of tables and seating available. Parking was easy to find as there's a large underground parking lot.

Yelp
Came in to get some buns but left with much more. The 2 for $7 sliced cakes are such a great deal! The mochi donuts are real good too. Just wished they had more flavors

Yelp
Sunmerry Bakery has quickly become one of my favorite places for cakes! Every time I stop by, I'm impressed not only by how beautiful their cakes look, but also how light, fresh, and delicious they taste. The balance of sweetness is perfect--not too heavy--so you can enjoy every bite without feeling overwhelmed. The staff is also warm and helpful--they're always patient in answering questions and giving recommendations. If you're looking for a bakery that delivers both presentation and flavor, I highly recommend Sunmerry Bakery, especially for their cakes. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
What's up: Wanted to get a cake to help celebrate a coworker's birthday. He never had a cake from an Asian bakery before so we decided to get a cake for him to try out. Parking: Located at the Atlantic Times Square, parking is plentiful with their large underground parking. There's two entrances, one off of Hellman Ave and the other off of Atlantic Blvd. Environment: The shop is just around the corner from the stairs leading up from the underground parking. I placed an order ahead of time using UberEats and when I arrived, the cake was ready for pickup. I had requested them to write a birthday message and the chocolate sign turned out great. They even provided all the essentials: plates, mini forks, cake knife, candles, and a mini birthday sign. What was ordered: - 8" Black Forest Cake (cake was light and fluffy with a good amount of frosting and shaved chocolate to balance things out. Not too sweet which was exactly what we were looking for) Yay/Nay/Meh: Yay. The cake was delicious and just what we expected. Ordering was easy and the staff members were super nice and helpful. Credit cards are accepted.

Yelp
While Sunmerry is not as popular as 85c, I like their quality and find it comparable to 85C (this is also a Taiwanese Bakery!). They also have different items like mochi donuts, too. While their dinner rolls can seem plain from the thought of it, it is actually pretty tasty. (+): Some seating available Not as loud or chaotic as 85C Decent bread selection (-): No rewards program :( this is how 85c traps you with random free / discounted VIP drinks when you achieve VIP status for making sizable purchases lol

Yelp
When you first walk in you're welcomed with a sweet taste of fresh bread and boba. Location is roomy and tables are spaced out to enjoy your treat I picked up a box of cream puffs - they're huge and the texture is more firm than Beard Papa. Not exactly what I would call "puff" I normally get the Salted Cream Green Tea which almost always hits the spot. I love that they use a cap vs a seal so I can sip and enjoy as much or little salted cream Additionally, we got boba Thai tea, boba milk tea float, and purple taro milk tea. Flavor wise they were all expected, nothing wow. The boba has a nice sweetness BUT it was hard to chew. It felt like they didn't cook it through properly. For $1 extra per drink for boba, I expected to enjoy it. I would not recommend boba as a topping in the future
google avatar

Brian T.

Yelp
Love their summer bogo deals. Wish it was more. Parking is by the 24 hour fitness and AMC theatre. They don't supply bags
google avatar

Crystal A.

Yelp
Great value and taste! I excepted the drinks and food to be expensive since it seemed like more of luxury bakery but it was actually really good prices. The mango tea was $5 for large size which is as cheaper and tasted better than major boba store brands! I really like how there was actual mango pieces in the drink so it tasted almost like a mango smoothie. The baked goods are the main highlight, I got to try one of the donuts. Really good and not greasy at all. There's a section for discounted breads that were from the previous day. They state everything is baked fresh daily. Everything is clean and well presented. The service was fast and accurate. Definitely will come by again for another drink and try more baked goods.

Yelp
My son recommended the bakery since he had the matcha cake for his birthday and it was so good. I ordered a Matcha Cake for my coach at Fit Body Boot Camp and she loves it. The service was wonderful even though they forgot about my order they have a cake for me there, just bummer that they didn't do the name but they figured it out and helped. So I appreciate it. The ambiance is chill, for a nice conversation and enjoying a good desert everything looks delicious. the bathrooms are outside the plaza, they're super clean. Love the cute decorations on the wall.
google avatar

Amina M.

Yelp
This place does NOT have wifi, on the contrary of what is on Yelp. I have not tried their food yet, it smells really good inside.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
My favorite sunday afternoon treat, slice of delicate strawberry cream cake and iced coffee. Always a delicious treat at a great price. 2 slices of cake and 3 large coffees for about 20$. Always friendly service with a smile. Come early to get some other snacks to go.
google avatar

Kelly H.

Yelp
Love their tuna bread and their chicken bread! They currently have a BOGO on drinks which is amazing. The people working here are always so nice and the place is always clean when I come in.
google avatar

Vickie V.

Yelp
My go-to bakery! All assorted buns are always delicious - soft and airy on the inside. If you're in the plaza and need a quick pick-me-upper, grab a bun from Sunmerry!

Vicky F.

Yelp
This review is for drinks only. I've been getting my tea at this location for years. When it comes to the summer BOGO drinks, the ice is NOT adjustable. The drinks were so blend and tasted like water. Too bad that I already sip the drink & wont be able to ask for a refund. The drinks were never this blend with regular purchase. If the store can't afford to the promotion, might as well don't offer it. Many tea options in the area and will avoid sunmerry going forward.
google avatar

Yelp
Always come here for the bread for breakfast and it never disappoints. The cakes are also delicious and service is great.

Yelp
When it comes to looking for a new place to try in LA, one of the first things I consider is parking. I'll save you the trouble, EASY, plentiful parking in the parking garage. Once you're squared with the easy parking, you're welcomed with plentiful options from plush, sweet breads, sweet and savory twists, croissants, moon cakes, cakes, boba and coffee. This place has it all. It's a self serve setting for most of the baked goods. However it is a quick checkout process with the friendly cashier making sure you are all squared away. Drinks are ordered up at the counter. I recommend going early if you can (I went around 10 AM) so you can enjoy a pretty easygoing experience. The parking garage does have a lot of parking spots; however, my gut tells me that it can get a little hectic towards the afternoon/evening time given that the shopping/entertainment center has a wealth of options. Highly recommend the Ube Concha, Black Sesame Mochi Bread, Molten Chocolate Mooncake and Oreo Crunch Bread. Great way to meal prep breakfast for the next few days!

Yelp
When I moved to Mira Mesa there was a Firestone here. Not many places to eat. Now the Firestone is gone and there are lots of places to eat. Sunmerry Bakery bakery recently opened and they were offering a 10% discount. There were lots of options to choose from. I tried some of their treats. Sunmerry Concha had a sugary top and fluffy buttery bread. Loved the flavor. I prefer the flavor of this buttery concha vs the concha's I normally get which are made with just wheat flour. Also the Sunmerry Concha is moister and smoother so it goes down easier. Almond croissant had a sweet buttery flavor plus some almond flavor from the almond slices. Loved how fluffy the croissant was. Strawberry cream cake was fluffy with fresh strawberries and strawberry glaze giving the cake lots of strawberry flavor. I loved the cake part that was light and had a sweet vanilla flavor. Staff was nice and kept the line moving. I like the flavors here a bit better than 85C.

Kathy D.

Yelp
BEWARE. I usually come here to get their breads for breakfast but was grossed out to see a fly feasting inside the opened package breads. The packaging on the breads are never sealed and there are no covers as well. It's not a surprised to see this. Please cover your breads or won't be returning to purchase from this store. Left with nothing because who knows which other breads this fly had been feasting on.

Scotto O.

Yelp
Good shokupan. Nice vibe. Clean place. Great service. Fast. Good food. Very good. Love their bakeries.

Yelp
It was the cashier did not offered rewards then I goes there every Sat & Sun on there drinks. When bought 10-20 for almost a month but the last I went there for about 10, one of then asked if we want rewards. At least this one offered. That's when I found out there's rewards. Dishonesty. Do we want? Customers are to get specials without asking, just added, or offer every time.

Yelp
This place is delightful and delicious! Amber is very nice and friendly! Very cool vibes!

Yelp

Yelp
Such a cute vibe, and love the ac in here, and great sweet foods, also awesome service :)))

Yelp
I stopped by to pick up some pastry around closing time (I did not realize). Most of the pasties were gone. Choices were limited. I was fortunately that I was able to get myself an almond croissant and a dirty bun. The pastries tastes good as always. However, cashier was no where to be found when I was about to pay. I waited for 5 minutes because the cashier came out from the back. Since it was during closing time, and one of the staff was mopping the floor when I was shopping. However, they did not leave the slippery sign out. I almost slipped. Underground parking was available, but it could be difficult to find parking because this is a busy plaza. I will not stop by if I do not have any other agenda to complete in this plaza.

Yelp
The cashier had a rude attitude, we were buying bread and she didn't want to warm it up, the bread was okay and the overall vibe was off
