LA's Best Dishes: The Infatuation's favorite meals of the week.

"I’ve spent this week mainlining MSNBC, marveling at Steve Kornacki’s sartorial splendor, backsliding on cigarettes, and just eating my feelings in general. And on Wednesday afternoon, that meant housing $30 worth of omusubi at Sunny Blue. These fist-sized rice balls are stuffed with everything from miso beef to Japanese pickles, wrapped in nori, and perfect for on-the-go snacking (yes, that includes staring at your phone wondering how the f*ck Prop 22 passed). I took down a house chicken curry with scallions, a spicy salmon, a spicy cod roe, and two of my all-time favorites - The Lucky Cat (with those aforementioned Japanese pickles, fresh wasabi, ginger, and bonito flakes) and the wasabi tsukudani, a mix of pickled wasabi and kelp. Fantastic flavors and a great variety of options for vegan onigiries!!! Wonderful customer service and this location has a cute seating area (indoor and outdoor). Our favorites are the Miso Mushroom, Hijiki, Shiso Ume Plum, and their special this week was Shiso Kombu! We also had the vegan inari with soba noodles, beyond delicious! Please please make the vegan Shiso Kombu a permanent omusubi on your menu! We frequent this place often and can never get enough!

I’ve been coming to sunny blue for a few years now. I usually go to the Santa Monica location, but dropped by this location as I was in the area. I ordered my omusubi with extra filling - they told me they would have to charge me extra for that, which I was surprised as the other location never charged me, but agreed. I took my food to go to eat at a park. Upon eating all the omusubi, every single one I ordered did not have extra filling, and they tasted very unseasoned. The food is already pretty pricey but to be up charged more than $1 for extra filling and then for them to be under filled and under seasoned was super disappointing. I definitely won’t be coming back to this location and wish I could get a refund :(

has a cute little outdoor seating area outside and not busy at all! there’s plenty of metered parking outside of the store and many filling options to choose from :) staff is very quick and nice to talk to, prices are roughly $5 each. definitely recommend going to at least once! theres not too many places that sell onigiri/omusubi so i really enjoyed eating here

The hours are short and the items are slightly pricey for what you get, but it really is a clean light meal with interesting flavors. I think it's worth trying once to see if it's your cup of tea. I put it in the same category as Kura sushi, gimmicky but a fun trip. Quality is a bit better.

I used to like this place like 8 years ago but it has become so scammy. They give just a pinch of meat and they don’t even give free tea anymore. They only survive because there is no other fresh omusubi place in the area. Someone could easily come in and take their business.

An employee called my personal cellphone and asked why I didn't give a 20% tip on top of a takeout order for 9 people. They said they would cancel my DoorDash if I didn’t next time. Each person only order 2-3 onigiris totaling $150. This is on top of the $40 in Doordash fees and $20 tip for the driver.

Delicious, flavorful, and the best part, CHEAP! I wasn't expecting much when I came for the first time, but WOW, the food was very delicious! I purchased the pork curry udon and beef miso (highly recommend) for $9 and some change. If you're looking for a quick and cheap bite, this is the spot! Lastly, the staff were extremely friendly.

This is a super cute Japanese place to stop by for lunch. The onigiris were yummy and the prices are not terrible. I feel like in terms of onigiri, I'm not an expert. I'm happy as long as it's fresh. I love the little seating area they have outside. It really makes me feel like I'm back in Japan. For the onigiri, I highly recommend the curry chicken one! That one is the best :3

My review is a bit skewed due to door dash :) I ordered a $20 lunch box that included 2 onigiri, 1 specialty item (I picked chicken karaage), 1 veggie side (daikon), and I think pickled plum. I'm not sure that I know quite how to eat this but what worked for me is taking a bit of each "side" with each onigiri bite! We got the spicy salmon onigiri and I don't know what I expected with "cured salmon." It was flaky, flavorful and the seaweed was still so crispy! The chicken karaage was seasoned well and had a thin layer of fried coating. I haven't been inside the place yet, but am hoping to visit in person sometime. They made the food a lot quicker than originally expected for door dash, which I think is solid!

This is a cute place. The staff was friendly. The inside is a little small but they had a nice bit of shaded seating outside. We found street parking with a meter. The food was ok. I had never had omusubi, and I'd watched a YouTube video of some people who came here and they compared it to sushi hand rolls. I can sort of see that, but they were really mostly rice. I got a tuna mayo roll and was disappointed to see they used tuna from a can. My husband got the spicy tuna and it was also from a can. The sides in the bento box were fine, but nothing notable. All in all, a pleasant lunch but not a place I would seek out.

I am in a deeply devoted relationship with the food here at Sunny Blue. I recommend this place to all of my friends and I go at least once a month. I've yet to find better omusubi/onigiri in LA. This visit, we got the tuna mayo (a personal favorite of mine), miso chili eggplant, spicy salmon, and miso mushroom. Every single one of these was excellent! The place is quite small but it has a good amount of outdoor seating and you can always find street parking nearby. A must visit if you like this type of food!

Need to come back because my review is only for the boba tea which was a special on Spooky Saturday. Sweet place with Halloween treats for the kids on trick or treating day. Kids were stoked to get a boba (they actually chose that over ice cream!) and I was told it isn't too sweet. Fun little patio side seating with plenty of atmosphere.

Just feels overpriced and a bit underwhelming. Too much rice, not enough filling or flavor. When eating the omusubi's, we couldn't help but feel like we just paid for a boatload of rice and seaweed and not much else. Out of 4 omusubi's, the only one with solid flavor and filling was the chicken curry. The chicken karaage was cooked well but completely under seasoned and the dipping sauce was a bit strange. Wont be rushing back. Maybe to pop in for a quick snack, but not a full meal.

I love a good onigiri/musubi from time to time, and I was curious in trying out Sunny Blue. It's a small store located off a busy, main street, and it appears it's metered parking only. I ordered a spicy salmon, miso beef, and miso mushroom, and the total came out to $16. There's one table inside and a few seats out on the patio (although there's not much shade if you come for lunch, so be warned)! The verdict: - Spicy salmon (5/5): creamy and the salmon wasn't too dry. I could taste the spicy kick and overall, a solid one. - Miso beef (5/5): tender beef, similar texture to Korean bulgogi, and the subtle, earthy miso taste. Another good one! - Miso mushroom (3/5): meh, could've skipped this one or gotten something else. Not bad, but the mushrooms were bland despite the miso flavor, and nothing really to write home about. Overall, tasty onigiri with good-quality ingredients. However, they are on the small side and $5 a piece, so they're more of a snack than a meal. Glad I tried them, though, and I certainly satisfied my onigiri cravings!

They'll make your food to order and have a large, extensive menu. The onigiris are pricey, but not much pricier than other LA shops, and they're delicious. I love their seasoning so much.

Came here before a photo shoot appointment with my partner since we were in the area. Wanted something that seemed affordable. It's kinda hard to find affordable food in LA lol. And tbh idk if I would even say this place is affordable considering it's almost $5 per onigiri, but they have a lot of different flavors for their onigiri and they're made fresh so I'll give them that haha. I believe when we went, we ordered the miso beef, pork ginger curry, tokyo tori, and spicy salmon? I remember enjoying them. To order, you wait in line and order at the counter and then they call you and you pick up your order. The shop is pretty small and has some seating inside, but there's more seating outside as well. It's honestly a very cute little spot! All in all, if you're in the area, and wanna try some different onigiri flavors, I'd recommend this spot. Personally, I wouldn't come back. But that's mainly because I'm rarely ever in LA haha. :P

I visited this place with a coworker because our other colleagues love grabbing a quick bite here, and even my friends from Australia have it on their list to try! More power to this business for reaching such a broad audience! The unique menu offers different options than a typical Japanese market, and the portions are big! However, when I ate there, the nori got a bit soggy. If you get it to-go, they wrap the nori in plastic to prevent that. Overall, my coworker and I really enjoyed our picks and it's definitely a solid place for a quick and affordable bite (especially with LA pricing)!

The aesthetic of this place is so cute! I love how they have a small section of Asian goods as well. There's a cute outdoor seating space as well. The onigiris are freshly made and you can watch the worker make them right in front of you. I like that they have a fair amount of vegetarian options. I got the spicy salmon and miso mushroom onigiris. I preferred miso mushroom one. The mushrooms were cooked well and had a good flavor. Just wish there was more furikake on top. A little pricy for the smaller size but still the better onigiri place I've tried in LA so far!

The onigiri's are OK - heavy on the rice, hits the spot if you have a craving but not the best. It's more of a grab and go spot, there's some minimal seating.

All of the rice balls were made with fresh hot sticky rice, high quality indeed. Some options were a bit pricey for a rice ball, but the quality can't be beat. Meanwhile, the fries are cut huge and have a crispy batter on the outside but taste bland due to the amount of unflavored potato with each bite of these huge fries, on the other hand, the pork curry in the fries objectively tasted great but for loaded fries, they were quite dry. Only having bits of onion and thin slices of pork. if you're looking for saucy loaded fries, don't go here especially for 8 buckies. ALSO the spicy mayo is 50 cents this place isn't sauce boss friendly

This place was awesome! The reviews that say it isn't enough food must be totally wrong- if you have a reasonable appetite you will be more than satisfied with 3-4 omosubi. I have celiac and tried the spicy salmon, ebi mayo, and tuna mayo. It didn't fall apart and crumble like some reviews stated, and was really really tasty for the price. Reminiscent of Sugarfish's crab hand roll. I think it probably helps to eat this very soon after it's made while the rice is warm and the nori is still crunchy- I wonder how it would do as a takeaway option, and maybe that's where some of the bad reviews come from. Service was prompt and helpful. Don't be swayed, this was delicious, reasonably priced food that my kids loved too.

Quick, solid, and filling meal! The onigiris were served warm and made quickly. It is on the pricier side, about $5 each, but good to try when you're in a rush! The exterior and interior are really clean and cozy. There's a significant amount of seating for your small party! The only complaint I would have is that the miso beef rice was super crumbling and kept falling apart.. I'm not sure if it was just because of the day or not, but it made it kind of a mess to eat :( but the meat was super tasty and so was the spicy salmon!

This time around I tried the Miso Beef, Sunny Blue Curry, Spicy Salmon, Kara Tuna, Pork Ginger Curry, & lastly a spam musubi. Miso beef, spicy salmon, pork ginger curry were easily my top 3 I highly recommend ordering these if you want something that's packed with flavor. Kara tuna was probably my least favorite it was just bland & didn't stand out compared to the others. The sunny blue curry was good but if I to choose between the chicken & the pork the pork would win every time. The spam musubi was nothing special I wouldn't order again. Something I love about their rice balls is that they pack the seaweed separate from the rice ball so that the seaweed doesn't lose its crispness. Overall, rice balls are very tasty & filling. Location: location is very cute but beware of the parking it can be tricky as it is street parking. Inside is spacious with indoor seating, there is also outdoor seating as well. Staff was super friendly & food was ready fast! Overall, great experience!

This is a very cute place located in a pretty quiet spot in Los Angeles. The store has a lot of stuff packed in it and can be a little overwhelming at first but the staff is very nice about letting you know their specials. There's some nice outdoor seating since there isn't much inside. I had a couple different types of the omusubi. I ordered the beef and the spicy salmon. The beef was good. The spicy salmon was a little bit of a surprise since it was canned salmon. I also ordered a side of the fried chicken which was delicious. The service was very quick. Everything was incredibly authentic and well made.

I was recommended this place on Tik Tok. It was said to be the "Best Onigiri in Los Angeles". Honestly, it was amazing. I had pretty low expectations of this place because I thought it would not compare to the ones I had in Japan. Surprisingly, I think the onigiri from this place is comparable to the ones I had in Japan. All of the onigiri is made on the spot. The onigiri I had a burst of flavor and would definitely recommend giving this place a try. Onigiri I ordered: Miso Beef: 10/10 would recommend getting Tuna Mayo: 7/10 This is a classic, but would try something else Pork Ginger Curry: 8.5/10 Unique and had a burst of flavor This place has parking around the area but you have to pay. Also, there are no places to sit down and eat. So order, grab your food, and enjoy in the comforts of your car!

TLDR: Pretty good, but probably not worth $5 per musubi Sunny Blue feels like an Americanized, trendy version of a shop when I could go to Mitsuwa and get a similar experience for half the price. Don't get me wrong - the Miso Beef Musibi was great and it's delicious when prepared warm and fresh but the portion sizes are pretty small and this is more of a snack rather than anything substantial. The spicy salmon was eh and the takoyaki was pretty decent. There's a cute little outdoor patio and the musubis came out quickly but not sure I would go out of my way to get this.

If I could rate this place 100 stars I would. Genuinely the BEST onigiri in all of Southern California. Genuinely hoping they expand to the valley or SGV or both because I would be their number one customer. I mean, this place I dream about. It's just incredible what a little ball of rice can do. The best onigiri in LA, hands down. Sorry, Mama Musubi, you're a close second! At $3-$5 a pop, it's easy to want to give this place a try. I'd say 1-3 pieces is best per person. Even one is good for two people to share, but it's only big enough for a couple bites each. My favorite flavors are the spicy salmon, tuna mayo, spicy tuna, miso beef and the mentaiko. The chicken curry and the mushroom are good, but not as appealing to me. I especially love the mentaiko, but the filling of itty bitty fish eggs isn't that impressive compared to the salmon or tuna. Super easy to order, grab and go. I usually eat on-site, but you can ask for them wrapped for take out (seaweed and fish/rice separate to prevent sogginess of the nori). I'd budget 5-15 minutes of waiting time for the order to be prepared. There's side dishes and drinks here, too, but the onigiri is the main attraction for me.

Pro: Food was made fast. Con: The miso mushroom omusubi is something I wouldn't recommend. It seems they missed salting it, it was bland and tasteless. It was flavorless, but at least still edible, it was indeed rice. Though the rice also lacked any salt and seasoning so -_- I left disappointed and confused since there's so many great reviews while my experience was so underwhelming. Maybe the other options are better but this one definitely needs more work. If you're still going to try it maybe ask for some salt if the same experience occurs. Or soy sauce at least. There is no seating so in terms of ambiance you're going to eat standing outside. Service, well, given the lack of seating that's not a factor, the cashier has normal hearing so that is good for if you order food.

I've consistently eaten at Sunny Blue since the original opened up on Main St in Santa Monica. It's a really cute concept and I wish we had more of these. Hawaii has some similar concepts but surprisingly, there are few places other than the market to get onigiri, yet alone ones with premium fillings like Sunny Blue. Yes, Japanese market onigiri is cheaper, like $2, and bigger, but it's not fresh, there's less meat and way more rice (cold rice on top of that, given it's refrigerated). Admittedly, the original Main St. location does seem to have friendlier service and better prepared rice balls (doesn't fall apart as easily). But that said, the meat, flavors and taste here on Washington is still on point. Frankly, it all goes to the same place so just catch your fallen rice and get a spoon. I have found that the rice sticks together better if you take it to go and in the wrapped form, but let it cool down for 10-15 minutes before you open it to eat. Over time I've noticed service has gotten faster here and their online ordering system works well. It's actually really easy to order ahead of time - I use the "order" function in Google Maps and my food is always ready in 15-20 minutes. That all said, I don't love all the menu items and while I've tried them all, I only really order miso beef and pork ginger curry. These two are absolutely solid and have the most "umami" flavor - I can eat 3-4 of them easily in a sitting. I sometimes get miso mushroom and the kara tuna or spicy salmon to mix it up but they really don't compare. Other menus like udon, ochazuke (rice in a green tea-based soup) and sides are fairly mediocre. Nothing bad but definitely pricey and super easy to DIY with a quick run to the Japanese grocery market. The Japanese beer here is good though and I also liked their soft serve, which I haven't gotten much given Ginger's Ice Cream is a block away. Overall, I highly recommend trying the miso beef and ginger pork curry if you come here. Eat it fresh for the best taste but do it quickly before the seaweed gets soggy. Otherwise, get it wrapped to go and wait for it to cool off before you open it.

Sweetness and savory for the Miso beef & the Amakira Eggplant and mild spice that's not too overwhelming. kinpira has a nice crunch & tang. The Sunomono is tangy & refreshing. Highly recommend.

This was such a cute, lowkey Japanese cafe! They specialize in omusubi/onigiri/ Japanese rice balls, but it's also like a mini konbini with dry goods and a refrigerated section. I ordered two omusubi, the spicy salmon and the miso beef, to go, and they were both very good! I liked the salmon a tiny bit more than I did the beef. They have one big table on the inside, or there's also seating in their alleyway, which had a couple tables outside and was pretty cutely decorated for being an alleyway. It was not crowded at around 5:30 on a Friday, but I can imagine it gets full if a rush of people come in. Metered street parking was available on Washington, but you could probably also try street parking in the local streets. Overall, would recommend for a casual eatery or if you wanted to pick up something to go.

I stumbled upon this hidden gem place looking on googlemaps for japanese food in my area, and am so glad I did. This place specializes in onigiri and has multiple different flavors ranging $4-5. They make the onigiri fresh as you order, and as such, it does generate a bit of a line up during lunch/dinner rush. I got the sunny blue curry (wafu chicken curry) , tokyo tori (sweet and sour chicken), and spicy salmon. My favorite was the tori, and it was a generous piece of chicken, whereas the spicy salmon seemed similar to the pre-made ones in Japanese supermarkets. The place itself is very cute. In the store, there is a big communal table to dine at, but there is an alleyway beside the store where there is more seating. I'm excited to come back for the other flavors ! They also have lunch bentos which allow you to pick the onigiri along with couple of side dishes, which I'm excited to try!

I love this place. I first had it when I was 16 and my cousin started working there. She brought me a curry omusubi and must I say it was quite delicious. They have many different kinds and I definitely recommend the curry, tuna or salmon. The restaurant is pretty small but it's not much you can expect from an omusubi place. I think they also have bento boxes and other wonderful food and beverages items as well but you need to try the omusubi. Also google keeps saying it's called Onigiri in some places but I don't think that's what it's called here.

They stuff a lot of rice onto the seaweed and the flavor is not bad. One omusubi is about $4.75 (pricey). They're very friendly and the food is nice. It's def not a cheap place to get omusubi but if you're craving a decent omusubi then this is the place.

The omusubi miso beef and Tokyo Tori flavors were our choice today. And the Barley tea was so good, too. The decor was well researched and designed for sure! Impressive little restaurant bolstered with well-thought Japanese influence! Felt like we were in Japan as we walked through the alley to sit! Taste was on point. Warm, freshly prepared and so so filling. When you go, make sure to ask how to portion your order based on your hunger!!

Not bad, I would only retry the sunny blue chicken curry, the miso beef is nice but a little too sweet for me and the mentaiko was really dry :/ they have interesting options though that may be worth the try if in the area. FYI, the seaweed used for dine in vs togo is different, I suppose because of how it needs to be wrapped (makes sense!). If you like the more firm, less oil and less mess kind then get to go, if you like the more thin, crumbly, oily, kinda saltier too I think kind AND you can eat it right away, then get dine in.

I've been coming to Sunny Blue for a while and it's one of my favorite places to come for an onigiri (rice ball). The service is incredible and the workers are always kind. I would say though that it's a tad pricey but honestly worth it if you crave an onigiri. The atmosphere of the venue is pretty nice and they have a little area outside to eat, which is so well decorated. The only issue I've encountered is the lack of parking on the street near the restaurant and the slight annoyance caused by their no cash policy.

First time having a omusubi! Got the Tokyo Tori to go wrapping and service was fast. I ate it the day after but really liked the seaweed wrapping, chicken was good wish it had a bit more filling. Overall, would go again to try other flavors. Total price was almost 6$ for one.

I like this location much better than the Santa Monica location! It is a lot more calm and there is plenty of room for dining in. The staff was friendly and quick as well. My omusubi was delicious but my favorite item on the menu was their pork curry udon. The curry was super flavorful and tasty, I'd definitely order it again.

Okay this use to be one of my favorite restaurants in the westside but my last experience here was really strange. Due to COVID they no longer have indoor seating but there's two tables and a handful of chairs on the patio outside. Okay here's the weird part. Our group needed one more chair, and there was a large stack of chairs in the back behind this roped off area. I politely asked if I could get a chair from the back and I was given a stern NO from the worker who was sitting back there. I then asked the person working the counter if we could have another chair thinking maybe they just didn't want random people going back there but was also given another stern no. Now I understand if there was some reason we couldn't use those chairs back there, but I was just asking nicely I didn't appreciate getting reprimanded for wanting to have a chair to sit on. Would have been nice to at least have some sort of explanation or at least be nicer about it. I ended up sitting on a little ledge of concrete on the ground. Food is good though but weird customer service.

I love this place. Sunny Blue is absolutely delicious. The food is out of this world, they make some top tier Oni Giri with a variety of different flavors. I personally love the curry flavors like the Sunny Blue Curry or the Pork Ginger Curry. The Tokyo Tori is also delicious, it's a nice sweet and sour chicken. I probably could eat an infinite amount of these things but I limit myself to four. I'd recommend getting 3-4 depending on how hungry you are. Okay okay so you are probably wondering... why not 5 stars? The service is not the best, often times kinda rude and slow. I've had worse service, but it definitely does put me off a little. Also, the vibe kinda sucks. Barley any seating, I was forced to eat on the curb next to my car which honestly wasn't horrible considering how easy the food is to eat but still... get some more seats. Overall, Sunny Blue is amazing and you gotta try it. Perfect to go place for lunch. Oni Giri is super unique and delicious, and Sunny Blue does a great job.

Came here for a quick bite and got 2 onigiris and a miso soup. The onigiris were wrapped terribly! Once I peeled the plastic off, the rice and seaweed were totally falling apart. The miso soup came out piping hot but was pretty mediocre. I like the concept of Sunny Blue but not sure I'd be back.
