Sushi Burritos Are Coming | Eater Boston

"At 1000 Bennington St. in East Boston, I found Sunny Cafe serving large sushi burritos filled with salmon, tuna, and teriyaki chicken alongside standard sushi (maki, nigiri, sashimi) and offering poke bowls and poke burritos with options like tuna, salmon, crabmeat, chicken, shrimp, and eel, plus Thai teas and bubble teas." - Eater Staff

Google
This is a solid go-to spot for sushi takeout. We’ve ordered from here four or five times now and have consistently enjoyed everything we’ve tried. It’s not the best sushi in the world, but it’s definitely reliable and decent for takeout, which is exactly what we’re looking for. Fish has been fresh, rolls are well made, and orders have been accurate. We’ll definitely be back and would recommend it if you want dependable sushi without overthinking it.

Google
Literally the best place i’ve ever eaten at. It’s so small, hardly could find it yet packed full of flavor. I got the fried haddock scallion pancake wrap and it was so good. i am full just eating half of it. My boyfriend got the salmon sushi burrito and he ate that right up. We got the Crab Rangoons as the share item but we ended up sharing it all!!! So good!!

Google
I've had the salmon burrito three different times. The first two times were SUPERB and perfect, but tonight, my salmon burrito had barely any sauce and wasabi, which left it pretty bland and tasteless. The tuna and crab burritos I got, however, had the opposite problem and were dripping sauce, which made it feel very heavy and soggy. I've talked about this place to so many different people because it was quickly becoming my favorite, but now I'm afraid the quality and taste aren't consistent. Edit: I ordered the salmon burrito again, and thankfully, it was of similar quality to my first orders, which I loved!

Google
Absolute favorite, generous portions and fresh seafood

Google
Absolutely delicious. Brought my family here because I wanted to try a sushi burrito and everyone left happy and satisfied. The food and teas were delicious. They even have options if you don’t prefer seafood or meat. I had the (make your own) tofu sushi burrito, and it was probably one of the best things I’ve eaten.

Google
Really friendly staff, good prices and portions, nice atmosphere, overall amazing quality sushi, definitely recommend this place!!

Google
I don't know why their sushi burrito is dripping liquid every time I order it - the wrapping paper gets soaked. Other than that, their food is great. Lots of delicious options. I especially like the giant sushi rolls (forgot the actual name, but it's 6 huge sushi pieces). Can't rate the service or atmosphere as I always order takeout.

Google
I just ate a salmon burrito here and it honestly was amazing. I am not sure about the last time I ate a quick bite at a place and felt totally satisfied. Great price, FRESH fish, taste was on point and packaging is pretty sleek!

Yelp
These poke bowls are THEEEE BEST. We have ordered poke bowls from a handful of places and legit Sunny Cafe is miles above the rest. I also really love their chicken yakisoba and gyoza. The food is always fresh, carefully packed and beautifully prepared. We have not dined in so I can't speak to the ambiance, but the delivery is always perfection.

Yelp
BEST POKE BOWLS I EVER HAD. FRESH, TASTY, AND AFFORDABLE. I got double salmon in my bowl and the portions here is way better than anywhere else. They don't try to overfill the bowl with all the other toppings and they really just focus on the protein, which is how it should be! Home to the best poke bowls I ever had in Boston. I hate to share this because I don't want other people to find out about this place but it needs to be done. They also have an expansive menu and creative items like a burrito out of scallion pancake which sounds really good, that I have to try next time! It is a small cafe with very limited seating but it is a very pleasant and quiet cafe. This is a great find!

Yelp
The place is small but this place is quite popular. I ordered everything for takeout. Tuna and Salmon Bowl--there is generous amount of food. They definitely didn't skimp out on the fish which I love. There is a lot going on in the bowl but I didn't think the flavor meshed that well. Overall this was okay. I'm interested in making my own bowl next time. Salmon Burrito--Packaged beautifully. This burrito was really good. I would order this again. Perfect ratio of ingredients to rice. Teriyaki Chicken Bowl--This taste homemade, big chunks of chicken. If you had Sakura Japan before this is different. I thought it was okay the teriyaki sauce was a little off for me.

Yelp
I thought this would be a sunny, happy experience, but it wasn't really like that. I stood at the door, waiting to be seated for over 10 minutes, looking at empty tables. A man had seated a group ahead of me, then walked away without acknowledging me. Finally a woman came from behind the espresso machine to give me a table. The menu selections were standard, nothing amazing. All the food and drinks came out in dingy, plastic plates and cups. Not impressive. Service was spotty by the 1 man waiting on tables. Not sure I would go back.

Yelp
This is a hot spot for takeout orders, and I understand why. It's not easy to get a parking spot in the area on a weekday night, but we snagged one and placed our order in person. The spicy edamame definitely has a kick, and my husband loved the sushi burrito. The ramen was just ok for me, but with a menu this big, you're definitely sure to find something you love.
google avatar

Kelly L.

Yelp
Felt so refreshing, greeted at the door. I was given space to look at the menu, didn't feel rushed or intimidated by cashier. Answered my questions and the food was prep at a good pace. If you love edamame You must try their spicy kind. The shrimp tempura was so fresh and NOT oily at all. Washed all this down with a bubble tea. Absolutely my new favorite place in East Boston. Forgot to take pictures of the food too delicious to not enjoy freshly made.

Shundel W.

Yelp
I ordered takeout from here and the customer service was welcoming and patient. I ordered a make your own bowl with three proteins and it was flavorful and fresh. The only thing that I was better was if the mangoes were more firm.

Yelp
The food here is good ! It's a great place to stop by quickly to get a bite to eat , their staff is very friendly . Totally recommended !

Yelp
My boyfriend and I ordered takeout for dinner via door dash. Our meal came an hour earlier than expected! I ordered a sushi burrito with tuna, salmon, edamame, seaweed salad, carrots, and eel sauce! The packaging was adorable and the burrito, itself, was DELICIOUS! The fish tasted very fresh and it satisfied my sushi craving perfectly! The burrito didn't hold together well, though. It fell apart right after I took my first bite, so it turned into more of a sushi salad. I had a great experience and would definitely order from here again - probably not a burrito next time.

Alissa D.

Yelp
If you're looking for a casual takeout sushi place, this is your spot. The menu is large and has a ton of options. I opted for the spicy tuna burrito- it was good but very messy. Turned into a poke bowl by the end
google avatar

Yelp
Really good sushi! I got Missou soup and a sushi. Good portions and quality! Really good portions and fresh! Next time I'll go back for the Thai tea
google avatar

Marissa R.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised with this place! I ordered an avocado roll with tempura flake, a side of spicy mayo, and 2 boba thai teas for my boyfriend and I. Take-out service was quick and easy, although I definitely recommend ordering at least 20 minutes in advance. They package everything up neatly in a to-go bag, including drinks! My roll was so yummy-- the tempura flakes on top were a satisfying addition and their spicy mayo was perfect! Unfortunately the boba was sub-par to me, not very soft/sweet, but the actual thai tea was pretty good. They have a good amount of options for vegetarians when it comes to rolls. The only thing that would really impress me would be if they added tofu to their menu! A tofu appetizer or teriyaki bowl option would be amazing! I am definitely going to come here again for sushi the next time I want a quick and easy meal :)

Yelp
I order take out from here once a week for the past 3 years and they are amazing every single time!! Absolutely love this place and highlight recommend

Yelp
I was craving sushi so I tried this place on a whim and wow I was impressed!! Best crab rangoons I've had in a lonnng time . I ordered the California roll and avocado roll, SO GOOD ! the miso soup was the perfect portion and scallion pancake was tasty as well ! Very happy I can't wait to have this place again.

Meaghann A.

Yelp
I got the sushi burrito, it was really good. The service was quick, super friendly, especially for a busy Saturday night.

Yelp
Lunch today was AMAZING thanks to Sunny Cafe! I trekked all the way here from the end of the red line since I saw an article on Eater on this new sushi spot! This place is right next to the Orient Heights blue line T stop so it's not hard to find at all. There are tons of options to choose from: traditional nigiri / sashimi, rolls, poke bowls, sushi burritos, and even teriyaki items for those who want something hot. I got the make your own burrito and was pleasantly surprised to find toppings that aren't very common in the spots in Boston: spicy tuna, avocado with no upcharge, fresh mango, teriyaki chicken, bbq eel, honey wasabi sauce and more. The burrito (or poke) is $9.99 if you want to make your own, with some custom burritos that are more or less the same price ($9-$11) if you can't decide. I got my burrito with spicy tuna and eel and it was so tasty. I love that the spicy tuna is pure tuna and spicy sauce, because almost everywhere I go, the spicy tuna is mashed and loaded with tempura flake filler which is such a disappointment. Sunny Cafe does it right with awesome food, kind and friendly staff, and great prices! I will be back!!!

Keala R.

Yelp
Very yummy! I had the sushi burrito and it was enough for two meals. I got the seafood and had a mango green tea that was very sweet.
google avatar

Bond J.

Yelp
This place was already an expensive meal to begin with due to it being a sushi / Poki bowl experience, so you are guaranteed to get a tasty snack, but have a get a second meal later in the evening. What I find annoying is that they recently changed the option of adding a side of Tobiko (little fish eggs) from being a garnish to a protein for $3. Ridiculous.
google avatar

Isaac R.

Yelp
Great flavors and portions, best sushi in the area avoid the cooked stuff stick with sushi and bowls. Double check your bag for sauces because they forget some times, and avoid getting raw fish on sunday because it's not that fresh since all weekend fish is from friday and by Sunday it doesn't taste fresh.
google avatar

Sarah E.

Yelp
Take out is the key- get the enormous sushi burrito! Prices are reasonable and quality is excellent
google avatar

Aubrey Q.

Yelp
My fiancé and I eat here at least twice a month and it's always delicious and fresh. We've never had a bad meal!! Will continue to visit regularly. Hidden gem!
google avatar

Des B.

Yelp
This place is great! I've never been disappointed. Try the Seafood scallion roll (it's a seafood burrito wrapped in scallion pancakes!! Philadelphia rolls are great from here too, they use more cream cheese than I've seen in most places, making it all the more satisfying!
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
This is our go to spot if we're craving sushi burrito! Consistent quality and their fish is pretty fresh. It's usually pretty quick without a long wait as this is more of a take out spot. The best part is they don't charge extra for toppings such as mango and avocado as most other places do. They are generous with the protein and toppings. The best sauce combo is the spicy mayo and wasabi mayo. It may not look like a lot in the container/box, but it's enough for a post workout meal. They spend a lot on the packaging and nothing leaks out/through the boxes. They also have smoothies/shakes (using fresh ingredients vs powder) if you're craving something like an avocado shake.

Yelp
MUST TRY THE SUSHI BURRITOS. If you don't read any further that is what you need to know!! I love this local place because it offers affordable, fresh sushi. It is located at a busy intersection so it's easy to miss and there's limited street parking. Inside, there's limited seating so it's best to order to go. The employees there are always super pleasant and welcoming! Between my boyfriend and I, we ordered the salmon burrito, dragon roll & spicy grilled salmon roll with a strawberry banana smoothie and Thai iced tea. The sushi is made to order so it was super fresh! You also can't go wrong with any of the smoothies here. I love the Thai tea here because it doesn't taste too bitter or too sweet! ALSO, its better WITHOUT the bubbles, surprisingly. This is usually our go-to place for cheap sushi when we don't want to drive into Boston, so we definitely recommend!!

Lili D.

Yelp
Paid $14 for a roll and the fish is gray and slimy...didn't eat because I didn't wanna risk the food poisoning. Won't be ordering from here again sorry.

Yelp
So glad to have discovered this little "cafe." The location is quite ideal for me as a commuter. A short block from the T, in a building connected to other establishments, facing directly in front of the main road... Definitely can't miss it. On my recent visit I opted for the chicken teriyaki dish along with a side of crab rangoons. I really enjoyed the crab rangoon. It was piping hot, right out the fryer, super crunchy, and the crab to cream cheese ratio was well proportionate. I even left it out on the counter for several hours and held it's crispiness. The chicken teriyaki was tasty as well. The dish came in box container that was approx 6x6, so just enough for one. One thing I observed was the cook. He prepared my meal to order, so I knew it was fresh. They do provide seating but is limited to a couple tables. There was even pop music playing on the loud speakers. Prices are very reasonable and quite affordable. Great for a quick bite! For those in a rush, I highly recommend you phone in your order ahead to minimize wait time. Much more efficient, as you could be waiting up to 15 minutes if physically placing one here..

Yelp
What a nice surprise! In Eastie finding sushi or Indian is like finding the needle in the haystack. Sunny is actually the owner and chef at this little gem. She puts out delicious food and treated us with such warmth it was like visiting a friend who can really cook. I had the spicy tuna Poke bowl that was sensational! The rice was perfect, only a little sweet, perfect texture not too dry or too mushy. My wife tried her first sushi burrito. It came out in the most adorable box and was impeccably rolled and presented. She went with the salmon and ate as much as she possibly could. Another hit! My sons had a veggie caterpillar and a make your own bowl. My 10 year old found a way to eat an entire caterpillar by himself! And my 12 year old loved his bowl with teriyaki chicken and shrimp tempura. If you do a lot of lunch dates like I do you have got to check this place out. It is directly across the street from Orient Heights T stop. The price is cheap for the quality you get and the service will make you a regular customer. Mostly a take out place with only 6-8 seats but our seats in the window felt great sitting in the sun. Enjoy this Eastie gem.

Yelp
Serving sushi and bowls to-go during covid pandemic. Calm those nerves with a spicy tuna and salmon bowl. I substituted the menu sauces with spicy siracha and sweet chili.
google avatar

Yelp
Fuggin sushi burrito's y'all... Been to other poké/sushi burrito spots and this spot is hella legit compared to the chipotle-esque other spots I've been to around here. They are authentic as fuck. Probably the best $10 I've ever spent.

Yelp
As I was plotting to stop at this spot, after it randomly popped up on my Yelp feed while visiting Boston, it occurred to me that I am really, really perverse. Here I am living in a city that is arguably *the* arbiter of national food trends and I choose to try a Sushi Burrito for the first time hundreds of miles away. See, I told you I was perverse. No, not pervy, silly. Perverse: Anyway, am happy to report that my Sushi Burrito deflowering was an enjoyable experience (**wink, wink**). The $9.99 'Make your own Burrito.' that hubby and I decided to share, included, if memory serves, Spicy Tuna, Salmon, Cucumber, Red Onion, Seaweed Salad, Avocado and Edamame, plus Spicy Mayo and Honey Wasabi Sauce. And since I am a big fan of Poke, eating it enwrapped with a nori, aka seaweed, sheet wasn't a huge leap. This was definitely tasty, not to mention, gorgeously packaged. Fish was fresh too, though I wish there had been more of it and that the bottom had not leaked each time I took a bite. Though I don't have a point of comparison, I had no complaints about size (**wink, wink**) and feel like a whole Burrito would be plenty filling. A Word about the Space: It's small, so seating is VERY minimal. Hubby was convinced it wasn't being utilized to its fullest potential and that with a little ingenuity, more seating could be created. But I digress... A Word about Restrooms: Unless I missed it somehow, there is no restroom. You have been warned. A Word about Location: I am not at all familiar with this part of Boston, unless you count a long ago pilgrimage to Santarpio's for its amazing pizza, so you can take this with a grain of salt, but am not sure if I would travel out of my way to stop here. It was a schlep from where we were staying on the Arlington / Cambridge 'border,' and is located on a pretty desolate-seeming stretch, without a whole lot worth exploring nearby as far as I could tell. Oh yeah, the kid got an Avocado & Cucumber Roll, and a Bubble Tea. Though the $3.49 price was right on the Bubble Tea, it was overly sweet and dare I say, 'meh.' Surprisingly though, the Fries here, are great! Not entirely sure why they're even featured on the menu, but they are, and the very jovial owner (I think), brought an order out for us to try. Delicious. Bottom line: If I were a local and this place was easily accessible to me, I'd definitely come back.

Yelp
I am lucky enough to live around the corner from Sunny Cafe. My partner and I order pick up most frequently although there are a few seats by the window. The place is extremely clean and the women who work there are some of the friendliest I've ever met (and I thought it was pretty cool seeing female sushi chefs! I have had almost everything on the menu including the bubble tea and YUM! Everything is so fresh and delicious. I love that their standard tuna and salmon rolls have avocado and cucumber. I also LOVE the shrimp roll. For an appetizer we usually get the gyoza steamed and they are perfectly sticky and flavorful. If you want something super fun try the sushi burrito! They are filling and delicious! Oh and wait until you see how they are packaged! You can pick from a few options or create your own which I usually do. If you are looking for fresh sushi from friendly people this is your spot!
google avatar

Rosemary C.

Yelp
I got the make your own poke bowl. It had salmon, tuna, avacado, mango, and tobiko (?). It was $10.69. The people were very nice. The place was very cute with a lot of food. It looks very good and nice, and tastes pretty good. They gave a good portion, more than another place I know.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Ordered the teriyaki chicken with rice. The sauce was way too watery and too much. It all soaked up my rice, and the chicken was mediocre.
google avatar

Alina Z.

Yelp
Delicious! Ordered with Uber eats, delicious even after being delivered. Good portion and price. Sushi was fresh and delicious! Presentation was above and beyond, love the sushi burrito box! Spicy Mayo was yummy as well

Benjamin T.

Yelp
Our favorite place in East Boston for sushi and Poke bowls. Reasonable prices, great sushi, and friendly staff.

Peter A.

Yelp
Large portions for the poke bowls. Fast service and delicious takeout spot. Highly recommend

Yelp
I ordered delivery and the crunch lobster roll was so bad I couldn't eat it. Something in it had turned and I was seriously concerned about being sick. I spit it out and trashed it. This was super disappointing that a restaurant would serve bad food like this. The spicy tuna roll I ordered was ok, but not the way I ordered it. I won't be going back here again.
google avatar

The Trut H.

Yelp
I was absolutely starving and it was still awful. I ordered 5 various raw sushi and maki rolls. Everything tasted old, artificial, and/or just bottom of the barrel quality, even the ginger. I literally thought the octopus was rubber for showcase purposes. Needless to say I threw most of it in the trash. It's worse than mall kiosk sushi. If you want good chinese food and sushi just cross the street.
google avatar

Maddy C.

Yelp
Love this place. Sushi is always consistent, and pretty cheap for what you get. Apps and poke bowls and other menu items are such a plus- and delicious! Recently moved away from East Boston and I already miss Sunny Cafe.

Yelp
Sushi around Revere/East Boston area is tough to come by - not a big craving in this neck of the woods. Thanks to yelp, we found this place which was a 5 min drive from our gym vs driving to Malden/Somerville for sushi The establishment is pretty small - maybe a total of 8 chairs for customers. Parking is all street - we didnt have any trouble at 8pm :) Menu offers raw/cooked rolls, rice plates, sushirittos and poke bowls. For dinner, we opted for: Shrimp tempura: nice outside crunch and shrimp was plenty. wasn't eating all dough Beef rice plate: this was disappointing as it was pretty basic. Beef could have had more flavor and the cabbage medley was bare bones. But plenty of rice to fill you up Spicy yellowtail rolll: pretty good and it helped satisfied my sushi craving. Def would come back for a quick sushi fix. Spicy grilled salmon: alright this sounded enticing but all it offered was shredded salmon rolled up with a dollop of spicy mayo all in all, I will say that it's not your fancy shmancy sushi joint but it offers good sushi to satisfy those cravings. Will come back to try the sushirittos and poke bowls!

Yelp
I went here today for the first time and I order chicken gyoza and shrimp tempura, the food was good and the ladies at the counter are really nice will definitely be back again they have ramunes too!

Yelp
Goodness this place was a pleasant surprise! I've been craving a Poke Bowl for a while now and decided to take a chance on Sunny Cafe. I'm so glad I did. The bowl I ordered was fresh, extremely tasty, and very inexpensive. The restaurant seemed very, very clean and the women working there were very helpful. I'll definitely be back again.

Yelp
Literally one of my favorite sushi places EVERRRR!!!!!!! I always order a sushi burrito, spicy edamame, Philly roll and a strawberry banana smoothie! And it's always on point ! I've tried several other items on the menu such as the miso soup, chicken tenders, crab rangoon, Thai tea, California roll and the spicy seafood burrito! All in which have been fantastic! This restaurant is very clean ... Like as soon as you walk in you can smell the food and freshness of the place... Staff is always friendly! Great customer service !!! They always greet you and are stay with smiles on their faces! I love it!! The location is perfect , parking is never really an issue and I believe if you're not driving there's a train station right down the street... Call before you come because since it's in such a busy area I've seen the line out the door at times... That could also be due to covid precautions as well ... Only one or two ppl inside at a time... I tend to always order online because they have great coupons and free items if you're spending over $25, $35 and $50!! I love this spot , it's so worth it !!

Yelp
Sunny Cafe is hands down the freshest most delicious sushi i've ever had. It is alway fresh. The service is excellent. If you are in the East Boston area you have to check it out.
google avatar

Ryan T.

Yelp
Solid spot for the area it's in. It's about 10 minutes from my house but it's my go to spot for sushi whether I'm craving sushi rolls, a sushi burrito, or a poke bowl. I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever had but the quality and price point is there especially since you don't have to drive into Boston for something to satisfy your craving! My favorite is their salmon burrito. The mango bits in there with a little spicy mayo and eel sauce is just perfect.
google avatar

Dale H.

Yelp
We came here for take-out based on Yelp reviews. As other Yelpers have mentioned, it is super tiny inside. We came in on a Sunday evening, and though we were taking out there was seating available. The prices were very reasonable ($6.50 for my roll). I ordered a spicy tuna roll and asked for regular tuna instead of the spicy, and they were able to accommodate my request. Each roll has 8 pieces, and mine was plenty for a meal. Hubby enjoyed his alligator roll, and my daughter liked her eel roll. Plenty of protein and other fillings in each, and the fish tasted fresh. Would come again!
google avatar

Anna N.

Yelp
Had a delicious build-your-own sushi burrito and salmon sashimi for lunch. My friend ordered a poke bowl and she loved it! The prices are cheaper compared to other sushi places and the food tasted fresh and well prepared. The portions are great, I felt full after eating half my sushi burrito but it was so tasty I had to eat the other half. The salmon sashimi tasted fresh, rich, and not fishy at all. Also ordered a yummy Thai tea for $2-$3! The cafe is small with limited seating so I recommend ordering takeout. The employees are super nice and attentive, I would definitely comeback. Sunny Cafe is a must try!

Nelly B.

Yelp
This place has ruined sushi for me. I ONLY WILL EAT IT FROM HERE BECAUSE ITS SO GOOD!! Anywhere else I have sushi, all I can think of is how it's not as good or affordable as the sushi here. They have the best spider rolls, BBQ eel, and actually fully cooked sweet potato rolls. This place is literally the place to go if you're on a budget and like any of the things I listed a sentence above. Staff are friendly. You can order online, there's a dollar convenience fee but if you spend over $35 ordering online you can get a free maki roll. All in all a really good spot. Also their sushi burritos are also bomb. Definitely make your own and try the combo.... places will charge you double what they charge here for less food. The quality and deliciousness can not be beat. This is the spot to go! You won't regret it

Alex T.

Yelp
I've ordered a number of times from them before finding a much better spot a little further away. Sushi is fresh and the taste I would classify as, 'good to very good' level. Presentation is weak however, definitely a point of improvement for them. I hope they will pay more attention to the details of the sushi and the presentation. It looks very basic upon arrival. You can recognize the difference between sushi that's had extra attention to detail and sushi that just gets the job done. This gets the job done, but nothing fancy at all. The saving grace is that the prices are fair for what you get. I've left reviews for 2 sushi restaurants in the north shore area that are absolute rip-offs when it comes to value. This place offers Value. The sushi isn't fancy, but you aren't paying 'fancy' prices. I do recall ordering some of their appetizers and underwhelmed by the portions compared to other spots. Overall, if you're looking for decent value and freshness, this place should suffice.
