Where to Get the Best Mooncakes in Los Angeles and Orange County | Eater LA

"I observed Sunny Dumplings—known for handmade Shanghainese steamed buns—making Shanghainese mooncakes with a golden, flaky, slightly crispy crust achieved by layering dough with lard (similar to puff pastry) and a traditional savory pork filling that contrasts with the delicate crust." - Kristie Hang

Google
I am very disappointed with the taste. 7 Baozi and 1 bag of huajuan, all cost $26, which I won’t consider it cheap. Also The size of is small. Now I can live with the size if the taste is good, but the taste is just so bad. The sauerkraut pork one I can’t taste the sourness in it at all. It is very mediocre to the point it is not worth the price. I won’t return to this store again.

I was craving fresh baked buns, but when I got to the store, I found out they had been made earlier in the day and left sitting out in styrofoam containers. Looking back, I should have realized something was off—the lights weren’t fully on and the front displays were dark. Honestly, I don’t know how a place like this gets a passing grade, since food should be stored at proper cool temperatures if it isn’t freshly made.

Google
The food was good, but the service was extremely poor. As a Chinese person, I have to admit that some Chinese stores offer very poor service. I politely and kindly asked if they could help me separate my order into two different boxes. The lady responded that she could provide extra boxes but could not help put the food into them. I explained that I was taking the food to my friend immediately and asked again if she could assist. She replied that they usually don’t do that because of the number of customers, even though there were hardly any people there (it was just us). She added that I should feel lucky she even provided extra boxes. What a ridiculous level of service

Ryan T.

Google
Fresh pork bun is still good like the usual 👍

Google
What a rubbish shop! They won't let me make a reservation without paying. When I called they told me they had half a pot of buns, but when I drove there 5 minutes later they told me they were sold out. I still need to wait 30-40mins! I will never go to your shop again

Google
This place sells the best frozen dumplings that I can find in the entire area. Any variety. They also sell steamed buns. Their cheapest pork steamed bun is the best on the menu. They run out all the time. I can eat their dumplings all day.

Google
I ordered the meat buns I enjoy the taste and juiciness of the filling and the bun is a very good texture but wish the meat to bun ratio was better, like less dough or more meat because I end up with a lot shell of a bun a small ball of meat. Still good though.

Xi W.

Google
Service is horrible. Nobody told me that I have to wait for 1 hour!!! They don’t even talk to customers. And they just let someone cut the line in front of their face?!?! I’m sure they are not take out orders.

Yelp
One of the more authentic spots in Rowland Hts for dumplings! The sauerkraut and pork bun is my favorite. My only complaint is that the meat is very little compared to the bun. I wish it had more meat and it would be perfect

Ruby H.

Yelp
ordered three steamed buns, but one of them was still cold. Make sure to hit up your food before you give out to your customers.

Xitian H.

Yelp
The two waiters in this restaurant are terrible. The hygiene is bad and the food is unpalatable. I will not come here next

Ann C.

Yelp
Went in the afternoon so everything was pretty much sold out. Looking forward to trying the white flour manto and sesame peanut flower bun.

Yelp
Sunny Dumpling House has multiple locations, but the one on Colima specializes in steamed buns. The artwork in the restaurant depicts a historical scene of townsfolk buying steamed buns in a busy marketplace. This scene reminded me of the martial arts shows I watched in my childhood. The heroes often began their journeys broke and penniless, down on their luck. In their moments of desperation, they were tempted to steal a bun, a true fork in the road that tested whether they were destined to be true heroes. Sometimes, a kind shop owner would offer them a bun, a gesture of pure kindness. (You won't get a free bun here, so you might want to brush up on your "Monkey Steals the Peach" technique. Though fair warning, it's considered a pretty dirty move!) The bun is more on the chewy side than fluffy, but what really makes this bun great is how juicy the meat is. Not sure how they do it, but it's still juicy after being in the refrigerator overnight and steaming it the next day! No dining in. Go up to order. The red tags show which variety of buns are available. If they're currently unavailable, they flip them over. Pro Tip: If they flip the tag over, it doesn't mean they're out for the day. It could mean they're steaming the next batch and it might require a 20-minute wait. They won't tell you this because they want you to order the next available variety. Unlike Asia, there aren't many shops in LA that specialize in steamed buns. I wonder what the next generation of heroes and poor scholars will be eating when they're at the bottom. Probably instant ramen or street tacos, but hey, every era has its own champions. As they say, time flows like a river, and new heroes will always rise to take the place of the old!

Yelp
I edit my review because I submit it for the wrong location. I never been to this location but the new store near walnut location is great

Yelp
I always come here to purchase their frozen dumplings. Even though it is on the pricier end, I still think it's worth buying their frozen dumplings every once in awhile. I like how their dumplings are so juicy in the center, and I like the thickness of their dumpling wraps. My go-to is the Beef and Onion Dumpling :) The wontons are pretty decent, but it taste similar to the beef dumpling.

Yelp
The most popular item in their menu is "Pork meat bum", but most of the time, it is out of stock. The similar menu item to this is the "Pork meat veg bum" which adds just a little vegetable, but priced higher. Of course, the store can make more profit by selling "Pork meat veg bum", even though it is almost identical to the "Pork meat bum". Many times, when I ask for "Pork meat bum", they often tell me there is no stock, and that I need to wait for an hour. Then I would just have to buy the "Pork meat veg bum" instead. By the way, I notice their "Port veg bum" has never been out of stock, not even once. I often wonder but had a hard time understanding why this strange thing could happen time after time, and so often. As after all, "Pork meat veg bum" would take more inventory/material (the "veg") to make. After I had another strange experience like this today, it suddenly dawned on me that this is really not a matter of "inventory/supply control" at all, it is how the store is doing to MAKE MORE MONEY. If that is the case, I want to tell the store this is NOT a good business practice. You can raise the "Pork meat bum" price to match with the "Pork meat veg bum" price, but not to cheat your customer!
google avatar

Yelp
Been there 4 times now, Same "sold out" trickery on their house special pork vegetable buns! They have no respect for their customers! Everyone who's been tricked should leave their honest review of their business practices.

Yelp
Located in a plaza, next to the GW supermarket. Service is quick and easy. Their pork and leek dumplings are so juicy and yummy. They use the same pork meat for their bun as well. Definitely a must try place.

Yelp
Fresh, delicious, will sell out! If you love handmade bao, you should come try one of each variety. They're all good! Wait in line to order, then pick up at the other end of the counter. Love the authenticity and the beautiful mural on the wall!

Yelp
The pork bun is amazing!! Tastes delicious and moist. They run out often. Will be coming there often.

Yelp
love their pork baos, it's so popular they always sells out as soon as a new batch is done. we have to call ahead to see if there's any still available or reserve one from the next batch to pickup. we also tried their pork dumplings. unfortunately the meat stuffing is the same as the bao, which in my mind should not be the same taste.

Yelp
Oh my god their employees are rude af! Good flavor buns are often out of stock and idk why they wouldn't just simply make more of it.

Yelp
We always make a point to stop by here before returning to Norcal. This is the spot for cheap and yummy pork buns! There is plenty of parking spaces (usually) in this Asian shopping plaza and there is usually very quick service in this dumpling house. We order the pork buns and freeze them for later consumption. They taste great coming out the freezer and I bet they taste even better fresh!

Yelp
Introduction: This is the only place I come to buy handmade buns. In order for a bun to qualify as being good, there are several criteria it should fulfill: the skin to meat ratio must been balanced, the meat filling must be of good quality and not meager in its amount, and the skin for the bun should be thin and chewy as opposed to being thick and hard. When here I recommend getting their pork bun and mushroom & chicken bun. Food: Handmade buns: For both, the chicken and pork buns, the quality of their meat filling is good: the pork and chicken are both tender and savory. The good thing about the meat fillings here is the fact it doesn't contain various amount of minced joints; with each bite one is able to savor the quality of the meat as well as its smoothness. Personally, I prefer the chicken bun more than the pork bun because the chicken tastes smoother in comparison to the pork. Ambiance: Casual Service: Adequate Price: Affordable

Yelp
this place had a low health score alert 3 months ago but i didnt know till after 2 visits located inda GREAT WALL SUPERMARKET plaza, i dropped by 2 order their twisted onion buns, napa & pork buns, sauerkraut & pork buns, pork buns, celery & pork dumplings (different times), most items were above average but i thought pricing was bit high when ordering just a single bun, tho u can get discount ordering in bulk ~ i ordered 1 of each 2 try 1st so i wouldnt b stuck w 9 buns of each flavor that i might not like staff isnt very friendly & not much eye contact + i already dont understand their language fluently but its even harder 2 communicate while we r all in face masks

Yelp
I went bought 2 sets of bun there total $16.5. The pork bun has big filling and very thin dough. However the pork filling feels a little on the greasy side. So vinegar or chili paste is recommended to go with the bun. The chives and egg bun is very popular there. I hope they can put more chives in the filling though.

Yelp
Just get the Pork Buns and you should be golden. I'm serious, the Pork Buns are so juicy and great. If you're going to reheat them, definitely steam them instead of microwaving or baking.

Yelp
Excellent place to buy fresh dumplings and Bao. Very authentic, store bought can't compare.

Yelp
Date of visit: 07/03/2020 and 07/24/2020 What can I say, since my friend introduced me to this place, I've been hooked! I usually went for their pork buns as they were my family's favorite AND are the best value ($7.99 for a box of 9). Recently, however, I noticed that their pork meat filling has a certain smell. I don't know how to describe it as only me in the family who notice it. No one else in my household seemed to be bothered by it. This "smell" has caused me to lose my liking for it.... So the last 2 visits, I decided to try the chives egg and also the vegetarian egg buns instead of the usual pork buns. And I'm so glad I did that! Both of them were absolutely amazing! The chives egg buns were fragrant and the vegetable egg buns were so satisfying and because they put mushroom in it, you get the feel of eating meat from the texture of it. Love both of them! They were equally tasty. My new favorite! I just wish there are more filling inside the bun like how the meat-filling ones are. Another thing I like to get here is their green onion twisted buns. These buns freeze well, so I would get a pack (12 buns) and leave some for the next day's breakfast and freeze the rest to preserve the freshness. Just thaw one day before and steam it. Or if you forget to thaw it the night before, just steam it straight from freezer. My husband loves to have it just like that, and my kids will devour it with scramble egg and pan-fried spam or pork floss. I just wish they put more green onions in the buns. So in conclusion, I will stick with the vegetable filling buns. No more meat ones, at least for now. Ha!

Yelp
I come here for some juicy pork buns. Freshly made daily and always sell out fast especially on the weekend Highly recommend calling them ahead of time to place your order for box of 9 buns. I find the texture of the bun wonderful, the outside bun has some chew texture in it (think home made fresh bread vs Conventional store bought bread) while the meat flavor is balance and juicy. Not dry. In fact if you happen to get to buy the buns that just came out of the steamers less than 15 minutes ago, you will get to taste buns with soup in it (Think Xiao Loong Bao , the juicy pork dumplings!) Flavor I enjoy includes the classic pork buns, pork with cabbage buns. Lastly I love the price!!! It's really affordable considering the quality and taste of these buns are so wonderful

Yelp
My family is a huge fan of this dumpling house. The pork buns are fantastic and a great value. They have so many options to choose from and the buns are the perfect breakfast food.

Yelp
Visited my mom in Rowland Heights a few weeks ago and she brought some of the vegetable buns home and they were so good when they're fresh, hot and delicious. The bun is nice and soft and the filling is very good. Went with her to get some today and they sell them in a box with 9 buns. The vegetarian buns are a little more expensive and I think they were $12.99 for 9 pieces. Haven't tried the other ones, but they have different kinds like pork, beef, etc. I haven't tried the other stuff on the menu either, but I think I'll just stick to their buns. My mom asked them if they only sell 1 or 2 buns, but they said they only sell them by the box. I Don't know why they can't sell me a couple if I'm not going to eat that many, but it's their business and I guess they can do what they want.

Zita B.

Yelp
I'm from northern China. The bums are extremely authentic. not sure why it doesn't have higher ratings

Lezli F.

Yelp
I had stomach cramps and diarrhea after having a pork bun from this place a couple of months ago. At first I thought it was just me, but when I saw other Google reviewers reported the same issue then I realized it's the bun. The bun tasted really great, I had to say, but I will not go back there again risking my health.

Yelp
I tried this place for the first time on Saturday. I got the 9 piece pork buns for $9.99. Super delicious and worth the price! If you're coming to this place for the first time I recommend getting these pork buns. I'm curious to try the other buns and food on the menu however it seems a bit pricey in my opinion. That's why I just got the pork l buns lol.
google avatar

Bee B.

Yelp
The house special pork buns and string bean pork buns are my favorite! The only thing is you have to buy the whole pack (9ct) for a cheaper price, otherwise it's $2 each mix & match.
google avatar

Madison L.

Yelp
Best xiao long bao / soup dumplings and pan fried dumplings ever :) It is always PACKED with people. It's a local fav. I always order them to go and everytime I come in, it is PACKED. I love the napa and pork dumplings and sauteed green beans. Honestly, it's ALL good.
google avatar

MK C.

Yelp
I only tried few items. Nappa & Pork Bun, Chinese Sauerkraut & Pork Bun and Beef & Onion Bun. Like all of them especially Beef & Onion Bun was the best. Honey corn bread was a bit too dry for me. However as far as dumplings/buns are concerned, Ill definitely return and try more.

Ryan L.

Yelp
I'd like to give them NO STAR!!! Unbelievable!!! I just bought two packs of bao and the food is COLD!!! So I called them and they said all the bao will be cold if you buy after 5pm everyday and ask me to heat them up in a microwave. They didn't even apologize like WTF?!! I'm assuming they don't even put them in a warmer or something like that after 5pm. Don't recommend at all, terrible service!!! If you wanna some bao, be smart, stay away from this place.
google avatar

Courtney H.

Yelp
Ok well I was going to say this place has the best tasting buns dumplings etc. but just read the negative reviews. Boy oh boy . Glass that resulted in the ER. You don't find that at most restaurants' yelps. So I'll still give it four stars but will have to think twice before coming here again. I appreciate the honesty of yelpers. Prices here are higher than elsewhere

Aleanor T.

Yelp
Excellent foods, no nonsense business! I can't be happier finding this place so close to home!
google avatar

EVELYN C.

Yelp
Very cute and colorful handmade dumplings. Price is fair. The taste would be a bit light for most people, but it's good for me. I would come again to try buns.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is soooo good! We had two different kinds of the soup dumplings and spicy wontons. Also, the spicy peanuts are delicious! I cannot wait to go back. We were so excited to eat we forgot to take a picture before.

Fandy Z.

Yelp
I purchased a box of pork bun from this restaurant. In the beginning, I ate and noticed there was something textured like "eggshell," but I didn't take it seriously and swallow them in. After that, I had a second bun, felt the same texture, and swallow. Until I bit a hard piece, I thought was a rock and spat it out. What I found was a piece of broken glass and it was bitten into two pieces. After a while, I felt some discomfort in my throat so I asked my husband took me to urgent care. The doctor ordered a neck x-ray and told me if she found something usual, she would call me. When I back home, she called me and asked me to go Emergency directly. I was sent into the emergency room because of abnormal results and foreign body in the throat. After examinations, I did upper GI endoscopy(EGD) to make sure there was nothing scratch or cut my throat, esophagus, and stomach. Fortunately, I was the lucky one, but the recovery after the procedure (under anesthesia) was very painful and took many days to get well. I am safe and recovered now. Please avoid this restaurant. They're not responsible for their food. They told me they checked the kitchen there was no way to let pieces of glass into the bun. However, one staff said maybe it's the glass bottle of fermented bean curd because the lid is always tied so they will hit the lid to let air in. The owner and manager of the restaurant still refuse to admit this matter is their responsibility. Does it mean they don't need to take any responsibility for taking out food? Very disappointed. My husband and I purchased buns for many years, but won't go to this restaurant for any consumption anymore. Sorry for the discusti

Yelp
Chinese Bun & Bun (aka Brother Bao in Mandarin) is a small eatery where you can dine in or do take out for various flour-based items such as baos, buns, dumplings, noodles, pancakes, wontons, assorted vegetarian platters and drinks. They have a menu on the wall that is entirely in Chinese, or you can ask for a bilingual menu. As one can infer from the name, they have a tasty selection of freshly steamed buns/baos for consumption on site, or at home (as is the case with the frozen buns/baos). For about $1-$2 per bun/bao, you can have a satisfying vegetarian only, veggie and meat, or meat only buns/baos. So far, we've tried the bok choy and pork bun, the vegetarian bun, the green onion twisted roll, and kidney bean & pork baos and recommend all of them. All were purchased in the frozen packages for $8-$13 for 10 pieces. The chives pockets were a bit more at $18.80 for 10 pieces. Everything was tasty and easy to heat up at home. Just cover the frozen bao with a damp paper towel and microwave for a couple of minutes and reheat as necessary to ensure the filling is not cold. If the baos/buns are kept in the fridge, it'll probably only take 45 seconds to heat up (also covered under a damp paper towel). Two of us ate about 14 buns/baos in two consecutive meals last week and decided to get more this week. As such, I came back with 40 baos (4 kinds) to keep in the freezer for emergency savory snacks. Additionally, the salted/sweet peanuts (sold in clear drink cups) were yummy. The only thing I won't be getting again is their sweet and sour soup. It is noticeably more spicy and sour than average and would take some getting used to. They tend to run out of baos/buns later in the day so go early for a better selection. $30 minimum for credit card purchases.

Yelp
Glass in the dumplings. Anyone wanna try with your medical bill? After this happened. The restaurant owner tried many times to take the 'galss dumplings'. Without sorry. Customer went to the hospital and found the problem. They Still saying no their dumpling's problem.

Yelp
- Convenient location, right by the Great Wall supermarket. The store is clean with clear processing lines that separate ordering from picking up - Sweet spongy cake with honey, the flour texture is completely wrong that everything sticks onto the teeth. I had tried steaming or microwaving, but nothing worked. The place lacks the skill of making floury food - Buns are cheap but the pork inside is low quality, much less than the ground pork quality that you get from the supermarket. I picked up chunks that are not giving me good feelings of the part of the meat of where it was coming from. The pork buns are also lacking taste, with sticky dumpling skins to the teeth

Yelp
I have only started coming to Sunny Dumpling since Covid-19 began, and so I can only speak to their takeout buns. My family has really been enjoying all of their buns which reheat very well (and easy - microwave works perfectly fine lightly wrapped in a wet paper towel). We have bought a variety of their 9-bun packs - the pork and chicken varieties (with green bean is great!), as well as the multi-grain mantou and scallion rolls. You can call ahead and place your order, but you'll still have to go inside to pay. Their workers are all wearing masks, and they've set up a plastic divider between you and the cashier. Recently they also added a microphone system that broadcasts what the cashier is saying (VERY LOUDLY). Credit card is taken but you'll still have to touch the screen to sign (their hand sanitizer is only on the cashier's side, so nothing for customers). My annoyance/issue that's repeatedly happened is that every time you order, the cashier has to yell to the bagger to check whether each item is still available and so there always ends up being a lot of confusion. Even when I made my order in advance over the phone, we still ran into this problem and it's frustrating since you just want to get out of the indoor space as quickly as possible. That being said, their buns are all quite tasty and have made for really filling and easy meals.

Yelp
Things are getting more and more expensive, and the taste is getting worse and worse. Is it because the water has become bad? I can't stand the salty steamed buns twice. The steamed buns are not the same as before. Bad review.

S W.

Yelp
I stumbled into this place late one night after the start of Covid-19. Looks like the menu changed drastically based on Yelp photos. I've come a few extra times to make a fair review. What I can say about the Bao -- Wow! Their fresh made Bao Zi (aka buns here) are very good, with a generous amount of filling, not too salty either. I've tried the Fennel and Pork. This one has an interesting flavor to it, may be an acquired taste due to the strangeness of the fennel. The beef ones are really good, very strange texture in the meat but very tasty. The chicken and mushroom is also very good. I like the level of saltiness to it, and some may disagree and ask for the soy sauce or salt shaker. To each their own. The best value is definitely by the full box of 9. Now, in order to review fairly, you have to understand what's going on here. Most food is fresh, there is frozen hand made dumplings for sale. If you've ever made Bao Zi by hand, you know it takes time to prepare the ingredients, hand assemble them, and lastly steam them. You likely will NEVER see the whole menu at the same time as there is only so much space and resources. Service wise, it does help to speak Chinese. This is a pro AND a con. There is a nice lady here who, if you get friendly with, will convince you to buy more than you want. She is very good. You would probably buy a bridge from her if she sold it. The food is very good here, so I don't care. I will eat it anyway. There is a different lady there who is easily overwhelmed and sort of yells at everyone because she is easily stressed. Expect long lines during peak hours. Expect NOT to be contacted when your order is ready. When they say 30 minutes, many times, its much longer. The restaurant appears to be clean, and while the COVID-19 scare is on, they are careful to wear masks, there is plastic surrounding the cash register, and when they actually handle food, they do put on gloves. I do have take one star off, however, for the $30 credit card minimum. Now that you know what to expect, feel free to give this place a try.

Hewitt Z.

Yelp
Their staffs are very rude and not following the health and safety requirements published by Los Angeles County Department of Public Heath for restaurant industry. They don't care about the food safety for consumers. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE unless tou want to get sick!

Yelp
It seems every time I visit, they have a different name..Chinese Bun & Bun, XG Restaurant and now Sunny Dumpling. One thing that hasn't changed is their fantastic pork buns and their low prices! Definitely recommend purchasing them by the box (9 per box) for the best value, and also because they will disappear in the blink of an eye. They make them fresh throughout the day and more likely than not you'll get a fresh, hot steaming batch when you order. They also reheat very well! Just wrap it a bun in a wet paper towel and microwave for a minute - literally tastes the same!! Not exactly a eat-in type of place, although I do believe that was an option pre-COVID. The majority of their business is to-go so don't be expecting five star service if you do decide to eat in. The guy who helped me at the counter was very friendly and also understood and spoke English so fear not and try their pork buns!! Believe me, it's so good!!

Tiff L.

Yelp
My sister have been telling me about this place for awhile and we finally made our stop today. The store is clean and neat. I love how they made it like a boba shop :) We ordered Nappa&pork bun, Fennel&pork bun, Honey corn bread, spicy pig ear and plum juice. I love all of them! But my favorite is the fennel pork bun!! You can tell the buns are hand made! Will come back for sure!

Yelp
Awful service bad attitude... The owner was literally yelling at the pregnant customer telling her to go get hit by a bus... Food is barely ok... Kind of dry

Yelp
Establishment: This is more of a to go place rather than a sit down restaurant. There aren't that many places to sit, so definitely do not bring a large group here. Also, it was a very warm day and there is no AC. One cool thing was that they had a room in the back Separated by class. Through the glass you can see the employees make all the bun and dumpling dough by hand. Service: The waiters were nice and accommodating. We had a party of five, yet most of the tables were meant for 2 to 3 people. However, they were able to put some tables together and accommodate us. Food: The menu has a lot of dumplings, buns, and other typical Chinese food. We ordered the pork buns, the leek and pork dumplings, the Kung pow chicken, and the hot and sour soup. The buns were good, a lot of flavor in the pork. The dumplings also had a lot of flavor, you can really taste the leek. My favorite was the hot and sour soup. I personally like my hot and sour soup very sour and very spicy. Although it was not that spicy, it did have a very nice tang to it. I probably would have enjoyed it even more if there was AC. Overall, The food was great, service was fine, but no AC On a hot day made it a little bit difficult to enjoy the food. I would come here again if I did not live so far away. If I lived closer, this would probably become my to go spot for fast and fresh dumplings and buns.

You can't pay for a credit card unless $30. I said I didn't have any cash, could I charge more for the credit card? However, the waiter insisted that I could not and promoted me to buy other things. so I bought rolls, buns and cold dishes a total of $28.89,The waiter said it was still less than $30!I bought a lot of things I didn't need!TH FOOD IS MOLDY!
