"Many Tar Heels will argue that the biscuits at Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen are the best in the country, and the line of cars that snakes around the tiny building out onto Franklin Street most mornings might just be proof of that fact. Big, pillowy biscuits filled with a choice of meat, egg, and cheese combo, or topped with gravy, are the order of the day here. Sure it has sandwiches and burgers, but a biscuit is the way to go." - Matt Lardie

If you're in a hurry and craving a quick Southern-style bite, Sunrise Biscuit is worth a stop—but know what you're getting into.
The walk-up service is impressively fast. However, don't expect a warm welcome. The staff can be noticeably curt, bordering on rude. Friendliness isn't on the menu here, and you're likely to feel more like you're a burden than a customer.
Despite the lackluster service, the food exceeded my expectations. The cinnamon roll is a standout—flaky, warm, and just the right amount of sweet. It’s the kind of pastry that makes you forget how grumpy the cashier was. The plain biscuits themselves are cheap, light, and buttery. I wouldn’t recommend the cheddar cheese biscuit as it’s a plain biscuit with what looked like a slice of Kraft cheese. I think the menu item should be named biscuit with cheese verse cheddar biscuit.
Sunrise Biscuit nails the “fast” and the “flavor,” but drops the ball on hospitality. If you can overlook a rough attitude in exchange for a hot, delicious treat, it's a solid stop. Just don't come looking for Southern charm—only Southern carbs.

Google
This place is way over hyped. When I have visitors, I like to take them on a chicken biscuit tour, and include Sunrise because the hype. No more. Yesterday, I went and got a tiny piece of chicken. See picture. More than one bite of the biscuit deserves chicken! Also very expensive for what you get.

Juhyun Lee

Google
I had a chicken biscuit, and the chicken was moist and tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. It was good. I ordered it for pickup, but there wasn't a place to sit and eat. Most people seemed to get it through the drive-thru.

Angela Carson

Google
I paid $9 for burnt food. This place used to be a great place. Now they don't care what they give you. That's a steak patty in the picture if you couldn't tell.

Google
I saw this place on the Travel Channel over five years ago and I finally tried them out. It wasn't busy (two days until Christmas). I love those biscuits and cinnamon roll!!!! I recommend the menu, everything off the menu. And the woman working the window makes it taste better when she says "enjoy."

Google
I haven’t been here in at least 15 years, so I stopped in today while I was in town. The fried chicken biscuit was just as good as I remembered — and that buttery, fluffy biscuit? Exactly what a good ‘ol southern biscuit should be! I went close to closing time, so there was no line and I was greeted with a big smile. It’s a good thing I don’t work or live close by anymore, I’d be visiting way too often!

James Smith

Google
I’ve been to many biscuit places all over the South. Nowhere comes close to here either in taste or value. Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen is the gold standard 🏅by which I judge any biscuit.

Google
Service is quick and friendly. There is no sit down. You order and take your food out to go. I got the grandpa sandwich (~$10?). Taste was good and made fresh but this would only be a once in a blue moon visit if you're watching your intake.

Colleen J.

Yelp
Don't miss the opportunity to try this place. Unique and so delicious! The chicken was tender and the biscuits were amazing!

Christopher E.

Yelp
We stopped by Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen after my wife finished her nursing shift. Drive through was fast. We didn't like the food, I ordered a chicken biscuit and she ordered a bacon egg and cheese biscuit. I think the food needs to be seasoned a little more. For the 2 sandwiches we paid $12 We gave it a try but, unfortunately it just wasn't for us.

John H.

Yelp
The biscuit fame is well earned at Sunrise. For breakfast on the go it's the perfect option. The biscuits are fluffy buttery clouds of bliss. They are huge and dense so you won't be hungry after just one. I thought the chicken was fine but could have used a little more seasoning. Hashbrown was on the smaller side and nothing notable though. Wish there was a tad more friendliness from the lady taking our order but can't fault someone for being a little cranky after a long shift.

Jessica H.

Yelp
This place has been around forever and it does not disappoint. I got a bacon, egg, cheese biscuit and a hash brown and sweet tea and everything was great! It's a to-go place so don't go looking for ambiance. The workers are friendly. If you want simply delicious breakfast on the go, check them out!

Andrea A.

Yelp
One of the best sausage egg and cheese biscuits I've ever had. Full stop. That's the review.

Kelley K.

Yelp
Awesome food and doggie treat for our fur baby! Must eat while in Chapel Hill! Quick and delicious.

Lynn R.

Yelp
I was out running errands and needed a quick bite. I did not want fast food and am watching what I eat. I knew SBK was known and tried for there famous delicious buttery biscuits but I quickly checked the menu for other items and found a few options for lunch. I was in luck and they have sandwiches that you can order for lunch. I opted for a chicken salad on wheat with lettuce and tomato and I could barely take a bite of the sandwich. It's so packed high with chicken salad. The chicken salad is delicious and I am very satisfied with my choice today. The service was quick and pleasant and the staff is always friendly and polite. This is a drive through establishment off of a main busy road so there's no options for eating inside anywhere. Besides this being delicious the price was right. The sandwich was under $5.00. And I did not need a side as this was more than enough.

Emily F.

Yelp
Amazing biscuit breakfast sandwiches! Fresh food, fast service and extremely good breakfast. I was visiting from southern CA and wanted a solid southern breakfast -- I'm so glad I visited.

Kyle R.

Yelp
Went with a friend here and was excited to try it since I always see super long lines. I got the bacon egg and cheese biscuit and it was delicious! I really enjoyed it and would definitely go here again. Service was friendly and prompt which was nice.

Saul R.

Yelp
Very rude staff, consistently, tried giving them multiple chances but theyre always very negative, impatient, and mean.

Angie S.

Yelp
Ever since I was a college student, I've always wondered what the rage of sunrise biscuits was about. Finally, 8 years later, I gave in and decided to try it. My brother, a fried chicken connoisseur, confirmed that the rage of Sunrise Biscuit company was not in vain. The biscuit was everything you'd want in a biscuit - soft, buttery, flaky, and full. It was the perfect pairing with the golden, crispy, tender, juicy, fried chicken. Simply unsimple. Everything you want in one sandwich on a Saturday autumn morning. The service was filled with sincere southern hospitality. If I didn't know I was in chapel hill, I'd know I was in chapel hill from the way we were treated just in the drive through line. Ambience is just what you'd want to be in while getting a quick, southern breakfast. The food is all that matters. Just you and the food. Just a break from the noise of life.

Joey T.

Yelp
I was visiting for the weekend and looking for some biscuit based breakfast. I was floored to see the myriad of biscuit based options in the aera, so much so that I had to try multiple. Sunrise easily beat out the competition. Best biscuits. Best menu. Nicest location. I wish I had something this yummy local to me.

Dina L.

Yelp
The biscuits and egg slapped but the sausage was rubbish. Very kind service even st the walk up. It's a drive thru so no ambiance. If you're at UNC and need a quick bite, this will do.

Dan K.

Yelp
If you are Asian I would strongly recommend you going somewhere else. I thought the woman taking our orders was just a grumpy person on my first visit. But on my second visit I realized her behavior towards my family and me was racially charged. Disheartening to keep seeing incidents like this.

John P.

Yelp
A small drive through-walk up biscuit stand. What's not to like? Really good biscuits. (I'm not a local but it seems Biscuits are one of the basic food groups around here) . I was still full from breakfast, but I had to try a chicken biscuit. At least just a taste. You know when it hurts to eat but something is that good you just keep eating? Yeah - that good. Service was quick and correct.

Ashley S.

Yelp
Great food RUDE SERVICE. The women taking our order had terrible customer service. She used an awful tone with us. When we asked if we had everything she slammed the window shut and began on the next customers order. We were unable to get her name. She rolled eyes multiple times at us as well. This was on 10/8 at 11am in case management wants to find out who lost them a regular customer. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING.

Kaitlyn M.

Yelp
Left feeling disappointed in what we opened our containers to reveal. If you're looking for something cheap this is your place, but if you're looking for a quality breakfast meal like we were, this is not for you.

Rene M.

Yelp
The worst food I have had in a while, I ask for a apple fritter with a chicken biscuit. The biscuit was dry and broke apart like it was held together by hopes and dreams. The apple fritter came in a ziplock bag and smelled horrid This is my first time at this place, deserves 0 stars

Alex W.

Yelp
Me and Fiancé decided to try a new place for breakfast! I am so glad we discovered this gem when we were in Chapel Hill. I got the Chicken Biscuit combo which came with a drink and a hashbrown. My fiancé ordered the bad grandpa. The hashbrown was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside! It was probably one of the best hashbrowns I have had in my life. I loved the chicken biscuit, the chicken was crispy and tender, and the homemade biscuit was absolutely delicious! The bad grandpa was unique and incredible!

Keenan T.

Yelp
Sunrise is a local drive-thru-only biscuit place that serves good biscuits. Their blueberry muffins are generously sized. I took one home and ate it for breakfast the following day. I'm a fan of their signature biscuits. I had a simple sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit my first time. It was basic. The main difference was the biscuit texture. These biscuits are rich and flaky. I got their Good GramMa the second time and made two brunches out of it. I took it home and whipped up a side dish to go with it. The Bad Grandpa would have been a carb overload. If I got that one, I'm making myself a hearty Southern brunch with it!

Yelp
Honestly, I Can't Complain, or Give Any Bad Advise About This Place Here. This is a Hometown Favorite; In Which, Will Continue To Go To, Til' This Day. Located off the Heels of the University of Chapel Hill, Sunrise is a Local Breakfast "Drive-Thru" Spot, Which Has Been in Business For Over 20+ Years. Their Biscuits are Hand and Homemade Each and Every Morning Before They Open. Besides Their Famous Biscuits, They Have Lunch Options as Well. They Close Around 2/3 pm. Personally, My Favorite Go-To Options Here are the Bacon-Egg & Cheese, Their Cinnamon Rolls, and Blueberry Muffins. For More About Me & This Blog, Tap The Link In The Bio. Yelp
We had a hankering for biscuits while visiting Chapel Hill, and were drawn to Sunrise after reading their reviews. We ordered 4 with butter, because we always need extras when biscuiting. The size and texture were great, tho we were surprised at a bit disappointed at how salty they were... . Luckily when we arrived at 11:00, there was no line. Service was fast and the folks were nice.

Mikaela B.

Yelp
This is always one of my favorite stops when I'm in town. Don't be deterred by the long line, that's almost guaranteed to be backed up into the road. It moves fast. But even if it didn't, Sunrise biscuits are totally worth the wait. I almost always get the Bad Grampa. For those who don't know, Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen was featured in the Johnny Knoxville film, Bad Grandpa! That's where this glorious biscuit sandwich gets its name. It's a huge portion of perfectly breaded chicken breast, topped with egg, cheese, and a lot of bacon! The biscuits themselves are buttery and crumbly in all the right ways. I have been known to swap the regular cheese on the Bad Grampa for pimento cheese - so good! I really enjoy their gravy biscuits as well. I sometimes add a piece of chicken to the gravy biscuits, because the chicken is just that good. It's a very simple establishment, drive thru only. There is no inside seating, however if you drive across the parking lot past the Indian restaurant, there are a few picnic tables if you're so inclined to dine outside! Over all, this is a classic breakfast joint in Chapel Hill. Don't miss this Tar Heel tradition!

Yelp
The best biscuit I have ever tried! You have to eat it as soon as you get it though!!!

Chloe L.

Yelp
Biscuits are huge and delicious. I like the steak biscuit as well as the sausage biscuit. Staff is very pleasant.

Kelly F.

Yelp
You can't beat the food or the friendly service. I know people gripe about the line. Hey, when there's a line, that should tell you something. I drive out of my way to come here to happily wait in line and I don't waste time for anyone. #1. Order that, thank me later.

Mike T.

Yelp
The food is OK, not really good. The quality of their food seems to be declining, as We have eaten there for over 30 years. The las couple of times we have gotten food there is was not that good. The grits are really bland and the eggs were overcooked. The biscuits were dry and fell apart when we tried to open them. Once we got them open, there were chunks of dry flour that never got worked into the dough. We threw the biscuits in the trash. also, we did not get the food that we ordered. We most likely will start going elsewhere. Sad that the quality of food at a once good establishment has dropped to what it is today.

Travis W.

Yelp
Much better than Biscuitville! There's not really much to say about the location, it's a small unassuming drive-they spot. The service is what you'd expect. The biscuits themselves are very well made, not try dry and just the right amount of chewy flavor. We got a chicken biscuit, the chicken was mediocre but I guess you come here for the biscuits? Travis' Rating Taste - 3.5 Quality - 3.5 Ambiance - NA Overall - 3.5 Isabel's Rating Taste - 3.5 Quality - 3.5 Ambiance - NA Overall - 3.5

Yelp
I've loved this drive-in spot in Chapel Hill, and it's always a fan favorite when I have visitors in town. Most people love the bad grandpa, but if you're vegetarian there are a lot of options, too. Pro tip: Don't sit and wait in your car, and instead park and come up to the walk-up window. I imagine you'll save yourself 30 minutes on a busy weekend. Also, it's so cheap! For less than $5 I got an egg & cheese biscuit with a hash brown that filled me up for the whole day.

Sikoya A.

Yelp
These are some of my favorite biscuits in NC. I strongly dislike waiting in line, yet I do it every single time for this place. The line of cars is almost always out into the street, BUT, it's worth the wait. Chicken biscuit is my personal favorite! Quick note: It's take-out only, so no seating options.

Heidi U.

Yelp
finally! we get to sunrise biscuit kitchen! and sooooo worth it. we are frequent visitors to chapel hill during basketball season and have been meaning to get to the biscuit kitchen for years. today was the day! we got sausage, egg, and cheese, egg and cheese, and double country ham. everyone loved their choice. biscuits were hot, light and fluffy, and flavorful. service was fast, friendly, and efficient. next time we're in chapel hill we will definitely go back.

Arthur S.

Yelp
This is strictly a drive though but you have a real diversified type of breakfast sandwich. We bought the hash browns, Dirty Grandpa made with eggs bacon chicken cutlet with cheese! Must be eaten when warm. We also bought other egg cheese and bacon and sausage. Super fast service very friendly and got our order taken over a intercom the first time. No repeating necessary.. this I say once more is just a dive though so it looks like a drive though no ambiance! Be prepared these are some real big biscuits.

Hannah E.

Yelp
Never heard of a drive through biscuit place before, but there's a first time for everything! The biscuits were a little dry and could benefit from some gravy (although how are you going to eat gravy-covered anything in your car) but overall we enjoyed our biscuit sandwiches (sausage/cheese/egg and the Bad Grandpa), finding them to be filling for the price and well-balanced in ingredients. The Bad Grandpa is so massive you definitely can't fit it into your mouth, but no worries, make a fried chicken meal and biscuit side out of it!

Abe P.

Yelp
I have been going to the other location closer to my house but I thought since I was in the area I would try it. Horrible mistake, the two locations are not the same. Serving portions and all. The fried chicken was over battered and fried in dirty oil. The biscuit was mediocre, and they didn't offer favorites from the other location. The service was quick, but also rude. It's funny cause this location flaunts having the "best biscuits", where the other location really doesn't have any banners or advertisements. I would recommend the other location. It might be a further drive but those biscuits are the best, I recommend the steak biscuit with pimento cheese which this location does not offer.

Jan K.

Yelp
Several staff members at the UNC hospital recommended we give this place a try. So here are my thoughts: Service - 5 Stars! Its a drive thru establishment and they know how to pump out the food in less than 2 mins and keep the line moving fast! Food - 4 Stars! The biscuits are tender and Humongous! You gotta know what your doing when you eat this, and have your technique down on how to tackle these giants. I got the chicken biscuit w/egg and tomato. I would bump this rating up to a 5 if the chicken was cooked to order, but then you sacrifice the speedy service. It would be nice to have that option. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed my meal!

Qiongqiong M.

Yelp
I love sunrise biscuit. I always get the bad grandpa biscuit sandwich. The portion size is big and the biscuits are so freshly made. This place open at 6AM, which is perfect for me Bc I'm an early bird lol

Irene C.

Yelp
Come for the mouthwatering, delectable biscuits! We had the chicken biscuit and an egg biscuit with pimento cheese. The biscuits were flakey, crumbly, buttery goodness without being overly greasy. The fried chicken breast was crispy and savory. Pimento cheese with egg was delicious combo. We also had hashbrows and cinnamon roll - the cinnamon roll was the other standout item along with the biscuits - featuring the same delicately delightful textures. Can't wait to come back next time we're in Chapel Hill!

Jade G.

Yelp
I threw up after eating there chili cheese fries and pork chop biscuit I think it was the chili and I didn't even eat much of it

Ethan S.

Yelp
Wow is this place good! The drive through is fast and efficient, but make sure to enunciate your order so they can get it right. The biscuits here are large, with a perfect fluffy interior and crunchy on the outside. My order came out almost suspiciously quick, but I was soon reassured of its high quality after my first bite. Definitely a mandatory stop if you're in chapel hill and need a quick breakfast.

Stuart S.

Yelp
Wow, fast service but disappointing regarding my order. Sunrise opened up when I was at UNC. I remember it being very good and reasonably priced. Not so much now, ordered a Chicken and Cheddar biscuit , a ham biscuit and a bacon & egg biscuit along with a cinnamon roll, apple fritter & an orange juice. Price was $27. Chicken cheddar was just okay- chicken didn't have a lot of flavor & cheese wasn't melted. My wife had the bacon & egg- she felt the bacon was similar to the microwave bacon you get at the Hampton Inn. Egg was small and again, not much flavor. Ham biscuit was good with lots of ham but should be for $5.50. She enjoyed her Apple Fritter; my Cinnamon roll was overcooked and the juice was a no name brand in 8 oz container for $3. For all the great reviews, my expectations were much higher. Time Out is a much better offering for a similar price point.

Timothy L.

Yelp
TOTAL ASS. The lady at the drive thru acted like she was pissed off, and you can taste it in the food. They forgot my hashbrown and the chicken on the Bad Grampa tasted like it was fried in month old oil. Wife's eggs were watery and they just slopped the gravy and grits together on the breakfast platter. Chapel Hill staple? I think not....

Sahil K.

Yelp
The pimento cheese takes the biscuits to another level, but I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a biscuit before coming here. Moist, flaky, and doesn't completely fall apart in your hands. The best biscuits you could ask for in the country. The long line is a sign that it's worth the wait!

Asad R.

Yelp
The best chicken biscuits I've ever had! I don't even bother with anything else here. There's no room to eat inside so they are mainly drive-thru. If the line is too long, I sometimes park next door and walk up to the carry out window instead. The biscuits are huge and a great value for the price you pay. I'm full after eating just one and I have a big appetite. If you're anywhere nearby, it's worth coming here to get a chicken biscuit!

Jeff B.

Yelp
A great biscuit and quick service! 99 Health Grade. We enjoyed a plain biscuit, a chicken breast biscuit and a sausage biscuit. All 3 were fantastic and huge. A must try when in the area.

Bill B.

Yelp
This place is pretty reliable the earlier you go. Super good biscuits, but I had a pretty meh experience later in the morning. After I hyped it up, we were served what seemed to be a "get rid of it cause it's the last batch" kind of biscuits to my buddy and I and also skimped the bacon with like 1-2 slices. Pretty crappy for like 14 bucks

Jason S.

Yelp
This place was exactly what we had hoped, and more. If you're looking for an old school bis unit sandwich, this is the spot. My wife had a chicken breakfast sandwich named none other than the "Bad Grandpa" with egg and bacon. I went more traditional with egg, bacon and cheese. Also had a cinnamon roll and hash brown. All were amazing. I quit drinking 4 years ago, but this would be a no-brainer for a hangover too

Mary S.

Yelp
Local landmark with delicious biscuits. Worth the wait (don't let the line of cars discourage you, just tells you HOW good it is) My faves-chicken and cheese biscuit and a cinnamon roll. Bad Grandpa is delicious too.

Charles V.

Yelp
I love going to places that focus on one thing. In this case, it is biscuits ... and they have nailed it. First of all, be prepared to wait as you may encounter a line at the drive through ... but it is worth it! I went for a bacon egg and cheese biscuit. Well prepared and quickly devoured. (I should have gotten a second). Many returns are in my future!
