LA Restaurant Industry Experts Discuss the Biggest Dining Surprises of 2019 | Eater LA

"I discovered Sunrise Cafe serving excellent Korean stews and a habit-forming katsu curry bowl — notably operating inside a North Hollywood Ford dealership, which makes the whole experience delightfully unexpected." - Matthew Kang

Pros: Very good food and large portions. Friendly staff. Con: $.80 service fee for credit card. They charged me $1.50 extra for a biscuit even though it states on menu biscuit or toast included w/omelet. When I pointed this out, waitress still did not reimburse me. She said it used to be stated on menu. Waitress forgot my coffee. I had to ask for it.

We’ve been there maybe 10 times now and the food has always been consistent as has the service. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but it’s definitely worth it for the food and to support local. The one thing I would change though is the decoration. There is so much potential for nice decorating. There is a huge wood bar back, with a few glasses on it but primarily seems to be used for storage. I’ve been in there and they’ve been half empty boxes worse than that though to me personally is the delicious selection of fake flowers. There’s even a cowboy boot style vase, which has Christmas decor of some sort inside of it to me fake flowers just collect dust dirt and grime. It doesn’t help when none of them match. I will also say the last time we went I used the restrooms for the first time And they could definitely do with a fresh lick of paint and new caulking around the toilet. None of this will stop me going, but my goodness I wish I could get my hands on it because I could really make it beautiful.

Google
Absolutely the best breakfast place in the area with a delicious hispanic twist! And they have some seafood dishes that I absolutely adore! Explore the menu which is pretty big for every picky eater. The staff is very helpful and friendly! Check in line may be long on the weekends. P.s. save some space for amazing banana bread French toast!

Ivy T.

Google
My husband and I went here for breakfast. They have a pretty good array of foods from breakfast to burgers, salads, sandwiches and wraps. We had the French toast and the lobster eggs Benedict. It was absolutely delicious!!! You must try this place. Our friend recommended this place and we're glad we tried it. We will definitely be back 😁😁

Absolutely loved the vibe here. Manager is so sweet recommended a drink that I absolutely love. Food portions are more than enough. For sure one of my new fav spots in Reno!!!

Google
Portions are humongous! Big enough to split which helps with the price. I had the corn beef hash since it was home made. It was a lot of food. The corn beef was tasty but a little bit on the dry side. since I had my eggs sunny side up it was fine as nothing beats a corn beef hash smothered in yolky goodness. Benedicts were not great as eggs were overcooked, though hollandaise was not bad. The fresh squeezed orange juice and a cappuccino rounded out our meal. One of our party ordered french toast which came smothered in a fresh berry compote of some sort. Looked delicious. You can get a fruit substitution on any of the breakfasts and it comes with a generous portion of mixed fruit including berries, not just your typical cantaloupe and bananas.

Google
The sunrise cafe has a very nice quiet atmosphere and was moderately busy. The wait staff was very polite, friendly, and quick. My wife and I noticed there were no children in the restaurant and there was no kids menu. The food was good cooked to perfection. The omelettes were pretty large compared to other breakfast restaurants I’ve been to. The food presentation was beautiful, and arranged as you would expect at a higher end restaurant. Price for the food would be $$$. For 4 adults breakfast cost me $75. At our table we had: -biscuits and gravy. They were easily the best I have ever had from a any diner or restaurant. -under the sea omelette -lobster omelette. The lobster omelette was large. At 6’1” and 200 lbs. I could not finish it. The only complaint would be the lobster omelette has asparagus in it, and there seemed to use quite a bit of the fibrous end of the asparagus. Overall, I will definitely be returning here.

Google
Pretty good restaurant. The food is well prepared, and the quantity is large! The menu has a lot of food choices on it. It's definitely a hidden gem in South Reno.

Yelp
Sunrise cafe is has pretty good food, and an okay atmosphere, but the prices are a little out of sync with my expectations. I was debating between a few things to order, and when I mentioned that I was interested in chilaquiles the server helpfully told me that they were doing a special chilaquiles. I ordered them, excited for something new. They were really good, a decent mix of crunchy, and saucy chips, the chicken served with it was good, and not dry, and the sauce was perfectly spicy, and rich in flavor. The eggs unfortunately were not very good. I didn't know the price when I ordered, but I assumed that it would be around $18, a few dollars more than the standard chilaquiles, but at $25 for the special chilaquiles I was in a little shock. Sunrise seems like a great place for people in the area, and I would probably go back if I was on my way to the lake, but I don't think I will be heading out of my way to go again.

Yelp
We love this place and enjoy taking guests. The food is always great and the staff are friendly. Plenty of tables available and I love that they're spaced well. This way you don't feel like you're on top of another group. Very chill place to enjoy a delicious meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Classic breakfasts and lunches served with big portions! I loved my tuna melt, classic bread toasted with generous addition of avocado and melty cheese. Classic good diner type food with big portions, I was so full from lunch I didn't even need dinner. Fries were a little dry but I could tell they are real and not just microwaved frozen fries. I enjoyed my experience at sunrise cafe, great vibe super packed and plenty of people.
google avatar

Yelp
This place has some very tasty breakfast dishes and I love eating here on the weekends. The service is very friendly and quick for how busy it can get here. The chilaquiles with red sauce is one of my to go to's and it was delicious and the serving was generous.
google avatar

Yelp
In my opinion, Sunrise serves the best Mexican Breakfast in town! It's located in a strip mall so nothing special on the outside, but the inside is really cozy and inviting. The employees are also super friendly and the service is great. Now for the food... I had the Chiles Relleno Breakfast, served with two eggs, potatoes, beans, sour cream, pico and tortillas. The serving is very generous and really tasty. I'm very picky when it comes to Chiles Rellenos outside my house, so believe me when I tell you, Sunrise has it right. I also had a Peach Mimosa, so good! Another 5/5 brunch experience!

Yelp
Third time here the plates are warm bacon is Wonderful service is very good can't find a fault in this breakfast place . Come on down when you are in town or a local best in Reno .
google avatar

Yelp
I can always expect a consistent, tasty and hearty breakfast here at Sunrise Cafe. Ive only been here a couple time but definitely never leave hungry! I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs and the dish overall was great but that gravy was very flavorful and delicious, definitely makes me want to get the biscuits and gravy next time. My wife got the Chile Relleno plate and it was also super delicious. We are usually picky about our chile rellenos and these one were very good. The coffee was strong and the orange was fresh squeezed, which you could taste, but definitely a bit watered down but wasn't the end of the world, would still get it again just because it tasted fresh.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is very clean and the staff is very welcoming. Food is phenomenal and the location gives it the hidden gem vibe. Don't sleep on this one folks. You will not be disappointed

Yelp
Really interesting twist on some of their breakfast options. It's prepared well and very tasty portion size is good. Our server seemed pretty busy but stay on task. Confused a little by the interior choices. But certainly interesting.

Yelp
A relaxing Sunday breakfast, just in our neighborhood! I have always been at the next door gym wondering and also smelling the yummy breakfast fares at this restaurant next door, and we finally decided to give this local South Reno joint a try, and it did not disappoint! We were craving a good, simple pancake breakfast, and Sunrise Cafe delivered. My husband opted for the regular pancake, and I upgraded my pancake platter to a Buckwheat pancake stack. We both got scrambled eggs and opted for the applewood smoked bacon, which was delicious! Both meals came with a side of cantaloupe that was so sweet and refreshing after the meal we had. I also had a cup of joe to top it off, pretty good too. We also were seated very quickly, which is rare in popular breakfast joints. Especially on a Sunday morning! Our servers were super attentive and they made sure we had everything we need. I personally can't wait to try out their chorizo breakfast burrito, stay tuned for an updated review with that in mind! Definitely check it out if you're in the Galena/South Reno area, it did not disappoint!

Yelp
My friend and I were hungry after snowshoeing so we decided to try Sunrise Cafe about 30 minutes before closing time and I am glad that we did. Service was top notch- the ladies working that afternoon made sure that we were checked on often. The food came out quickly and was just as described. Our coffees were delicious. The cafe has an open feel to it with a lot of windows and a variety of seating choices. It didn't feel cramped or squeezed together like some cafes do. I will keep this location in mind when I am coming back into Reno after playing on the mountain.

Yelp
Food can be very good or can be hit and miss. They recently took away the Senior menu and have raised the prices again. Now making eating out here much more expensive. Then they throw on a credit card fee and you have a very pricey meal. Drink prices are not posted on board at front, so you don't know until you get surprised by the bill. $6.50 for regular coffee is outrageous for a coffee shop. Time to make breakfasts at home and bypass the $30 breakfasts.
google avatar

Yelp
The service was good. Ladies are very nice. The food was very good! My steak was a good cut and seared nicely. My wife's French toast was fabulous. Serving sizes are very decent. Only issue was when I opened my menu, there was a load of trash in it. Don't know why it wasn't checked and wiped down.
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
I ordered to go, a breakfast burrito with chorizo. it wasn't bad just don't think it was my cup of tea. definitely will be returning and trying something else. service was good for to go experience and ambiance seemed clean and seating was spaced out. can't wait to try them again soon, but next time i'll be dining in.

Yelp
I am surprised they're not rated five star restaurant on yelp. Just about everything was great about this place! Have a nice ambience, five people asked me if I wanted anything and we're willing to help me right away. We found a table right away as well, And the food was excellent. We had Denver omelette, Café de olla, and a Tres leches latte! I was very impressed with almost everything. The restroom's floor needed a little help as they looked dirty, and they could pass a vacuum in between customers. I want to come back and try their mimosas' sampler. Stay tuned!!
google avatar

Mike J.

Yelp
We have been here several times and every time has been great. We come with 5 people and the service is quick and attentive, always polite. They have great specials and this time we did the flight of mimosas which were Christmas themed like the Grinch, Jack Frost, Christmas Mosa and the Lavender. I had the steak omelette and it was fantastic. They don't skimp on how they cook the steak, it's phenomenal. The hash browns are freshly made and one of our favorite parts of the breakfast. All 5 of us couldn't finish our food because they are big portions and we got to take them home to enjoy later. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I recommend the Carnita Benedict (comes with chipotle hollandaise sauce); it's delicious! Staff is always attentive and polite. A few other breakfast things are not made to my tastes (huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, beans are too firm), but if you know what to order you'll be happy. The restaurant environment isn't too loud but it's the right amount of busy. Decor isn't bad (some places remind me of an echoing cafeteria-- not here). I like to go early.

Jason I.

Yelp
The staff is nice. Since they got new menus every dish is $20. I don't think this restaurant is at the class level to be charging the rates they charge. The online menu for this restaurant on yelp has incorrect pricing, if you go there now and look at the menu, practically everything is $20 and up. Yesterday I ordered the fajitas, and I asked for both steak and chicken, the menu said steak was $21 and chicken a couple of dollars less. So when I got the bill I was charged $28 for simple fajitas with two tortillas. I was told that the "combo" with two meats is $28 but I wasn't told that until after I already finished eating it. I didn't understand how all steak option would be $21 but by reducing the amount of steak for chicken costs 7 dollars more. Thankfully I wasn't charged extra for the side of cheese that I wanted that wasn't originally included. The other person I was with had a Turkey club and fries for $18. The final bill became $53 for two meals. $5 tip made it $58. Additionally the restaurant can be very loud with the staff throwing dirty dishes into a bin in the main dining room. I'd think that they should take the dirty dishes into the back of the kitchen and place them in a bin, rather than throwing and crashing dishes causing very loud noises that startle their guests. And their mens restroom is disgusting! It's dirty all the time, there is no partition between the sink and the urinal and have zero privacy for the man using the urinal. The toilet stall has had a broken lock for about a year that never gets fixed. Wish this place had reasonable prices, quieter environment without a much of crashing dishes, and a mens room that wasn't a health and privacy hazard.

Yelp
A fellow traveler on our plane trip to Reno (Lake Tahoe) told us not to miss Sunrise Cafe. Over the week we looked and looked for it as we visited around the lake. On our way back to the airport, we noticed their sign at the perfect time to grab breakfast. This was one of the best meals experienced on the trip! The portions are GIGANTIC! I ordered biscuits instead of toast and the biscuit filled the salad plate and would have been enough for 3 people. The platter was filled with delicious, thinly sliced home fries like scalloped potatoes without the dairy. My eggs were cooked perfectly and the bacon was delicious. The servers were friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Very good food with a solid expansive menu. Portions are massive. It was packed! They did seem a little understaffed at the time, so it took a while between ordering and getting our food served. I recommend this joint to anyone looking for a hearty breakfast or lunch
google avatar

Allisa L.

Yelp
We came here on Saturday afternoon and although the place was busy, we got sat immediately. The server was very kind and attentive. She gave great suggestions too. The food was amazing. I got a vanilla chai latte which was perfect. For food I got the maple sausage link+egg plate and upgraded to biscuits and gravy. Everything was amazing! Plenty to eat, I even took a box home for breakfast tomorrow. Definitely will be back for more! We also saw a lot of people order lunch and everything looked delightful so we'll be trying the lunch next time!
google avatar

Yelp
Still the best place for breakfast, IMHO. This has been a very consistent and busy restaurant, especially on the weekends. The wait is worth it, though, and service is always good. This may be a bit of a drive if you live in Sparks or NW Reno, but it's definitely a well-established place for those who live in South Reno.
google avatar

Francis H.

Yelp
Sunrise Cafe has a very diverse and varied menu. We've only been here twice and each time it's been a challenge trying to decide what to order. So far I've had the ABLT and the Breakfast Burrito. Bring your appetite because their servings are BIG! Servers are pleasant and service is quick, as they are well staffed.
google avatar

Melissa K.

Yelp
I love coming here for breakfast! Get a mimosa, hot coffee and a delicious breakfast no matter what I'm craving that day: sweet -french toast- or savory -bacon and eggs. Always great, fast and friendly service too. This place isn't very big so it can and does fill up fast on weekends. Luckily there is bar seating if the tables are full.
google avatar

Yelp
SO GOOD!!! My husband and I had breakfast at Sunrise Cafe this morning. We both really enjoyed our meals! I had the carnitas omelet and he had the carnitas huevos rancheros and biscuits and gravy...yes LOTS of food! We dug in so fast I didn't get pictures! The advice was so fast and friendly. We have always love going to Sunrise, bust we've been trying to get other places and haven't been there in a while. We both kept saying we can't believe it's been so long because the food is incredible!! I love how friendly and happy the whole restaurant feels! I definitely recommend to everyone! 10/10!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Back to Sunrise Cafe for breakfast. Great service. Busy on a weekday morning. Last day befpre school starts so lots of family having breakfast. Service was prompt. Ordered a veggie omelet which was a large portion and very good. My son ordered his usual chilaquiles. Nicely spiced. This place seems to be always busy with wait times, especially on the weekends. Nice clean homey feel.
google avatar

Craig H.

Yelp
My wife discovered this place after a hike with friends and raved about it. We went there today for breakfast. She ordered the blueberry waffle, and I opted for one of their many eggs benedict options. Normally, I prefer making breakfast at home, but this meal was exceptionally good. If I ever find myself not wanting to cook breakfast, I would definitely choose Sunrise Cafe. I highly recommend it and plan to return.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Great place for breakfast. They are open only for breakfast and lunch. I had the sunrise omelette that was excellent. Big portions. Easy parking. Good service. If you like eggs Benedict, they must have 8 options.

Mathew S.

Yelp
Service here was imbecile! I had a broken glass given for my mimosa and the wrong breakfast burrito comes out but the server made it right! I didn't catch her name but she gave me a mimosa on the house, another burrito and was super attentive! We will be coming back soon and was very happy that we were treated with kindness and respect despite all the mishaps!
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
Although we did not dine inside the restaurant, as we decided to take out due to traveling with our dog, we noticed the staff were friendly and worked fast to serve their clientele. The food was awesome (though a bit on the greasy side). The portions were large, and the prices were very fair.
google avatar

Tabitha E.

Yelp
I really need to come back here, I've been 2 or 3 times and each time, I've had incredible service, amazing food, and delicious coffee. I'm an eggs benedict gal, and what originally drew me to this restaurant is their benedict options. I tend to be pretty classic, but I love to add on spinach as a bit of a play on florentine, but still having that slab of meat that's just required for eggs benedict. I don't do hashbrowns very often, so I usually upgrade to fruit and they are generous with it as well as making sure it's fresh. I love that you can get a wide array of drinks from alcoholic, to espressos, lattes, etc. In my opinion, it's THE breakfast place in South reno and consider it an equivalent of Sparks Coffee Shop, my other favorite breakfast place in town. Soon I'm going to need to drag my husband in, as I've only dined solo, that way I can try out some other menu items, but the eggs benedict is flawless and when I ask for soft poached eggs, they deliver. Only wish they did offer delivery so I could order it more often, though it's easy enough to call in and pick up too. Super duper recommend for breakfast and brunch, you won't regret it.
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
Wow wow wow! Both the service and food here is incredible! We started with a mimosa flight and all 4 flavors we got were absolutely amazing! I got the banana French toast which was so good. The bacon was perfectly cooked. Everything about this experience was so amazing and we will for sure be back. What an amazing little hidden gem!

Lydia T.

Yelp
Best breakfast place I have ever been to This feels like you're at home with a personal chef. The care and time to make a tasty meal but much better than you can do it. I don't usually go out to breakfast because why would I pay $20+ for one entree where I could make it at home? I got the steak omelette with biscuit and potatoes. The potatoes were sliced thin like scalloped potatoes. The biscuit was enormous. Steak omelette was giant Server was alright - nice but not special. Def come here with a friend as it is loud and bustling and not the type to sit alone and read a book Friend got the blueberry pancakes and they were amazing. Would pay for these pancakes again

Jim G.

Yelp
Service was really great and attentive, and I was greeted and seated right away. Also my food arrived sooner than expected. I just wanted a simple bacon and egg breakfast and to be on my way. The scrambled eggs and the 4 slices of bacon were really good but unfortunately the hash browns had a really odd flavor, like they were cooked in artificial or used oil. They were edible but not very good, and I really like hash browns. Ambiance was good and on the nicer side. In general it was ok but I think they could do better.
google avatar

Pam H.

Yelp
I have now dined here 4-5 times now and have to say that everything is great. The food is delicious, service is attentive and friendly, the portions are huge and I love that they can make Specialty Coffees (not all breakfast places offer this). Their menu is extensive and everything sounds so great, it's hard to choose! Today I visited with a group of 10 gal pals to celebrate a friend's 60th birthday and it was a very nice surprise when they brought a "celebration plate" to the table with French Toast, drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauces, topped with bananas, strawberries & whipped cream with a Birthday Candle and we all sang to our friend. I love it when establishments go above and beyond to be celebratory! You made our gathering super special and we thank you!!

Danielle F.

Yelp
Large portions and tasty food. I wish they made their hot chocolate with milk. The water definitely ruins the flavor and lacks the creaminess that hot chocolate should have. Was pretty busy for a Sunday morning at 8am. Service was pretty friendly, lots of staff running around and checking in on tables.
google avatar

Charmaine N.

Yelp
I've been meaning to leave a review but kept forgetting. Lucky my phone's photos reminded me. I LOVE everything about this place. Friendly service, comfortable seating and delicious food. Prices are not outrageous. There's a Banana Bread French Toast that I unfortunately don't have a photo of. My hubby describes it as for real banana bread. From start to finish, bananas! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Heard of this place for quite some time, finally checked it out with a group of 5 on a sunday, were told a 25-minute wait. however the wait was only about 8 minutes. we were seated right away and given waters along with taking our drink orders. as it was cold out, few of us got hot cocoa's and the other got a mocha something which took long to come out and first came out a bit cold so was sent back only to come out 30minutes later but came out hot at the least. For our order I got the special which was a pastor omelet which came with potatoes and an english muffin. I would not get this again as the pastor was a bit dry and fell apart so maybe it is just me but i'll keep it in a taco. overall it was delicious as my first time there and will deft be back to try more items.

Yelp
This place is always packed and yet their service is always on point. The place is spacious and has lots of seating, family-friendly and it is clean. We were greeted promptly and got seated within 15 minutes. Our server Tania was very friendly and very attentive. The food was served fairly quick and food temperature was on point. I ordered the chile relleno with eggs and it was so good! The side beans were also cooked to perfection and just full of flavor. My eggs were cooked perfectly (the runny yolk is my favorite) Keep an eye on their drink specials, they always have something fun to offer wether you want non-alcoholic or alcoholic drink.

Brandi L.

Yelp
Food is delicious, service is stupendous, the music creates a peaceful ambiance, my 11 year old son and I have breakfast here quite often, and every time we come here it is phenomenal, also very friendly staff

Yelp
A hidden jewel in a small mall. Appetizing food, good size portions and friendly attentive wait staff. Eggs benedict was tasty! Reasonable (for these days) prices. Will definitely return!

Yelp
This place became my favorite brunch place! My bf took me to this place first, and I loved it. The food was great and of course service was also decent good. It's a great spot to catch up with your friends. Very cozy, not that nosy.

Lupe C.

Yelp
Best banana pancakes ever. We've been several times and we've never had a bad experience. Service good. Food is great.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Service perfect. Ambiance is a lovely breakfast kitch. Many people grabbing breakfast before heading up to Mt Rose. Full recommend.

Yelp
Time for an update since it's been a while. Service was quite slow today for our lunch. Maybe they were short staffed because of the holiday yesterday, who knows. They have a sampler mimosa platter that confused the heck out of our server. She had no idea what to make of it even though it was on the menu, caused another trip to the table to clarify and multiple repeats because she wasn't writing anything down. The wife had the chilaquiles special which she enjoyed, it was an enormous amount of food. Carne asada had good flavor. I had the carnitas tacos which were an utter disappointment. $16 for 2 tacos, they should be on point. Their carnitas were what always made me come back, this time they were lacking flavor and definitely not the best in Reno anymore because that's what I used to tell people. Aside from that the server insisted on handing me my hot plate of food instead of setting it on the table but then warned about the hot plate to the wife after. Not sure of the deal there...it was obvious they had been sitting and warmed in the oven, put it on the table instead of making your guest grab the hot plate to put it down. You were using something to hold the plate, clearly it shouldn't be handed to a guest. The rice was barely edible, clearly undercooked and chewy. I only had a few bites. The wife tried one bite and her look said it all. I understand restaurants ebb and flow, they're sadly ebbing.

Yelp
Stopped by this place on our way to the airport. Big restaurant, lots of seating. Friendly service, variety of options to choose from on the menu. Our breakfast dishes were yummy! We will be back...
google avatar

Htet K.

Yelp
Love this brunch place because it's close to our house and Mt Rose. A great casual place to eat after skiing before going home. However, vegetarian options are somewhat limited. Otherwise, great brunch menu with excellent Mexican options. Big portions and reasonably priced. The service is fast and they don't rush you (one time we arrived close to closing time, they were so nice to let us in). Place is baby-friendly as well.

Yelp
Breakfast is always great here! I believe you truly get your money's worth with how much they actually put on your plate. Service is always really good. We went here on a whim one time and now we feel like regulars because of how often we come.
