Ruth Reichl’s Ultimate New York City Snack Crawl

"Onigiri "I love onigiri and I love Sunrise Mart, too. It's another great resource in this city. You can go there and get the makings for sushi and sashimi at home. But I'm surprised that onigiri haven't gotten bigger. It's one of my favorite snacks in the entire world. It was one of my favorite things to eat when I was an assistant in media, when I only had five minutes or pennies in my pocket. It's basically a healthy snack. Nothing in it is bad for you. The Japanese have invented these incredible ways of keeping the nori really crisp. There's a separation between the rice and the nori so that you're not getting anything soggy. You're getting this really crisp, wonderfully salty nori. You bite into that and you can hear it crackle. And then you hit the soft rice, and then you hit the filling. The fillings: I know people are making all kinds of crazy things, but I love umeboshi—salty and fruity—and mentaiko. I would have them in my pocket all day." - brennan carley

29 International & Specialty Grocery Stores In NYC

"Before H Mart came to the East Village, there was Sunrise Mart - a Japanese grocery store on Stuyvesant Street where you could get cookies from Hokkaido, uni, matcha powder, and superior Kit Kats. Now Sunrise Mart has locations all around NYC, including Soho, the East Village, Midtown, and (most recently) a big food hall set-up in Industry City. The Industry City location has its very own tofu counter, as well as a wagyu beef station and tons of fresh fish. Also, the Midtown Sunrise Mart sells a bunch of health and beauty products, which make for excellent gifts." - hannah albertine, nikko duren

Sunrise Mart can't be beat! I went to the one in SoHo and felt claustrophobic but this one is the real deal! I felt like I was in Shibuya! They greet you in Japanese when you enter. It's a real class joint. The food side is incredible! I was a little intimidated to order something as I'm not familiar with Japanese food so I just grabbed something readymade off the counter. IT WAS OFF THE CHARTS! I think it was a sampler plate or something (pictured). The market side is also top notch. They've got everything! If you need some canned quail eggs, look no further! The second floor has all kinds of Japanese homegoods and bathroom stuff. This place is great! Respect.

i got the spicy tuna onigiri & okaka onigiri, but they had so many others i wanted to try! i wish the okaka came with more bonito flakes, but it was yummy! the spicy tuna tasted a lot different (in a good way) compared to other spicy tuna onigiris i’ve had! it was almost like cooked tuna? or canned? but very fresh & they make it right in front of u — served warm !! so delicious they have PLENTY of other fresh japanese dishes to choose from that looked amazing — from curry to donburi to katsu to handrolls. they have a bathroom that u can use after purchasing something (code on receipt), which is located in their relatively small upstairs seating area. i will be back 100% to try some curry, donburi, & more onigir! the service was also wonderful, staff was super kind.

I had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. The fish was not fresh and tasted sour, which ruined the meal. This makes me doubt the quality and reliability of this place as a Japanese restaurant. To make matters worse, I experienced stomach pain after eating here today, raising concerns about their food safety standards. I strongly urge the restaurant to improve their ingredient freshness and quality control.

Such a beautiful spot with real Japanese vibes! 🇯🇵🍛🍜🍙 The onigiri is a must-try! The curry was rich, and the ramen hit the spot. Honestly, I wanted to try everything… but I was way too full 😅

Must try🧋 Yuzu iced tea Selective vegetarian food options however, the drinks tasted really good. Good for a quick stop to stock up on yum food. The prices are not crazy and it’s feasible!

The restaurant sells many kinds of Japanese-style bento, such as udon noodles and Japanese fried chicken. There are 2-3 tables in front of the restaurant and some seats on the second floor. The environment in the restaurant is clean, the air conditioning temperature is moderate and comfortable, and the attitude of the staff is good. The fried chicken bento I bought was cold, which is a pity. It would have tasted better if it was hot. If you come here to buy lunch, it is recommended to order directly from the staff. The freshly made meals are more delicious when they are hot. The sashimi sushi is much more delicious. The sashimi is very fresh. If you dare to eat it, I recommend buying it.

This place contains a wide variety of Japanese food products. I wanted to get a quick bite and got their katsu curry chicken with rice. It was really good.

Chicken Katsu don is my go-to order at Sunrise Mart, and nine times out of ten it does’t disappoint. The place offers a wide variety of food options. I would have given it one more star if other orders I tried were as good as the Katsu Don. A perfect place for a quick meal.
