"Before H Mart came to the East Village, there was Sunrise Mart - a Japanese grocery store on Stuyvesant Street where you could get cookies from Hokkaido, uni, matcha powder, and superior Kit Kats. Now Sunrise Mart has locations all around NYC, including Soho, the East Village, Midtown, and (most recently) a big food hall set-up in Industry City. The Industry City location has its very own tofu counter, as well as a wagyu beef station and tons of fresh fish. I had the BEST mango pudding here. So good🥹❤️ other desserts looked also so delicate and yum🤤 they have a wide variety of japanese stuff and the price is cheap compared to the other stores in the city! I will visit often!

Place has all the Asian market stuff at great prices!!! Everyone knows the owner and say see u tomorrow to her lol and the restaurant side had a lot authentic Japanese food made to order!!! They also have all the Asian beauty products upstairs too!!! Place is off the hook!!!!

Went here with the family and ordered a fried salmon bento box, some onigiris, fried gyoza dumplings, and tonkotsu ramen. The salmon bento box and onigiris were quite good. The gyoza dumplings were standard, and the ramen was just okay. Although, my daughter loved the ramen. Kids will probably like that one. I thought it was pretty cool to feel like you were in Japan in New York. Decent value here for those looking to get some Japanese food.

Authentic, affordable japanese food to-go! Bentos, onigiris, donburi, hand rolls galore! They also do japanese pastas. I come here every time I miss Japan and my husband and I like to meet here for lunch during work days. There is cozy area upstairs with seating and a microwave. I highly recommend the grilled mackerel and unagi special bentos!

Asked for pork katsu curry and got curry and rice with no meat, came back the next day, bought more food and explained the situation, store manager gave me back $2.18 since he used pork katsu curry price minus veggie curry price… he did not apologize at all and for gods sake I’m not vegetarian and that shows me he thinks my time is only worth $2.18. Food might be okay but service sucks. Not only that but I discovered on my way out that he gave a different receipt which does not have my credit card info on it. I went on a business trip and needed the original receipt to expense the meal.

Sunrise Mart is a Japanese grocery store that also runs a Japanese restaurant/cafe next door. If you are looking at the reviews on Google Maps, you should be aware that some people may be rating the grocery side and not the dining side (or vice-versa). As for the grocery store, it’s probably the best stocked Japanese grocery store in the midtown/Grand central area. The first floor is packed with Japanese staples along with a decent selection of fresh produce used in Japanese cooking (e.g. burdock, daikon, lotus root, shimeji mushrooms, etc). The back has a wide variety of sashimi-quality fish and seafood. The second floor has a section for Japanese household goods along with Japanese beauty supplies. Prices are pretty standard for NYC. As for the dining side, it’s a pretty chaotic system for ordering. You have to order at the cashier in the front for some dishes (e.g. curry, udon, donburi, etc), but the menus are inconveniently scattered all over the restaurant - so once inside, you have to wander around, look at the various menus, and then return to the cashier to order. All the menus are actually posted on the front door, so you may just want to take a look before going in. Also, some foods are not on the menus because you have to pick them up yourself from the refrigerators on the side (e.g. mochi, sushi, condiments) or are just stacked up by the pick up stations (e.g. okonomiyaki, bento). I went at an off-peak time, so I could walk around and figure things out without much stress, but I can completely imagine the frustrations of some first-time customers who came during peak hours.
