The Best Gas Station Restaurants in Houston | Eater Houston

"This time-honored taqueria, attached to a Shell gas station on Memorial Drive, draws in the crowds as early as 6 a.m. on most mornings. Load up on tacos, like the saucy carne guisada or bacon and potato, or go for something heartier, like the migas platter served with beans and fried potatoes." - Megha McSwain

Sunrise Taquitos Mexican Grill is an absolute win for anyone craving authentic Mexican food. I can’t lie—the flavors here are incredibly close to what you’d find in Mexico. It’s a rare find, especially in this area, and it’s clear they take pride in delivering high-quality, traditional recipes. The tacos? Top-tier. Perfectly seasoned, with fresh, flavorful ingredients that really make each bite memorable. Whether you’re a taco enthusiast or just looking for a satisfying meal, you won’t be disappointed. And the salsas? Fire. Both the salsa roja and verde are must-tries—each one packs a punch with bold, authentic flavors that elevate the tacos even further. What really surprised me was the pricing. For the area, it’s shockingly affordable without sacrificing quality. It’s refreshing to find a spot that delivers this level of flavor and authenticity at such a reasonable price. If you’re on the hunt for authentic Mexican tacos that won’t break the bank, Sunrise Taquitos Mexican Grill is the place to go. Highly recommend stopping by and trying it for yourself. This spot is proof that you don’t have to travel far for a taste of Mexico!

Google
The staff is super friendly and kind. The food is great, but the prices on the plates have become a bit ridiculous. $16+ for this? Notice the amount of meat vs the rice and beans.

Robert Reed

Google
There's always a short wait, which proves that good things are worth waiting for; the breakfast tacos are THE best. The barbacoa is delicious, and the staff are always friendly and upbeat.

Sergio Arellano

Google
Delicious food, just like homemade, fresh made tortillas. I recommend the barbacoa and beef fajitas and on the weekend they have menudo and tamales. Great customer service, I recommend to place your order online.

Google
Today I decided to go to a new place for breakfast to try them out they had a barbacoa breakfast plate it was around the price of 1099. The price for me was a little on the high end. I guess for barbacoa it's okay but the other regular breakfast plates that didn't come with barbacoa are around the same price. I don't think they should be that price in my opinion. The breakfast and the lunch menu is all the same price as well there's no variation. The barbacoa was good the beans were good. however overall it was okay when you put it all together. I got the barbacoa and ranchero plate. I wanted to have my plate custom made a little bit different than the way that they make it but they were not willing to adjust either to my liking. So would I come back again if I'm in the area & there was nothing else better I probably would stop. If not in the area It's okay but I wouldn't come here 30 minutes from where I live just for this place no I wouldn't.

Google
Love this place! I have been going to this location for years and I take advantage when I'm in the area to order my food there.

Google
If you do not eat pork...Do Not Eat Here! Ordered 2 eggs and cheese tacos and received tacos that smelled and tasted like they had bacon in them but didn't. Asked if I could get two new tacos without the bacon grease and was told "No, everything is cooked in the same pans". I have literally waited in their parking lot for 30 minutes on a previous visit until they opened. If I had known how they prepared their food, I would have never visited.

Google
This Houston Breakfast taco place has been around for a long time. You will always see Gloria in here serving you (the owner). This is a family place and a great stop after your workout at memorial park. See pics for menu.

Yelp
A local hot spot with a line at the counter and drive thru... Inside there is seating and alternating persons at the counter.. one speaks English ( very nice personality with awesome people skills) and the other is bilingual person whom I didn't meet. If you eat in, food is served in styrofoam to go boxes. As for me, we ordered the breakfast plates at 10..00 each...barbecoa and rancheros... well, the beans were runny and heavy in garlic ( like freeze dried and add water kind), the potatoes looked like yesterday's greasy french fries diced and re warmed... The salsa was a warm soup that wasn't much of a traditional salsa.. The eggs were good. The barbecoa as well. My best guess is that the cooks are from a different region of Mexico or possibly another country. Needless to say, I would give 2 stars only in my opinion... Again my opinion only as there are many folks coming in and out.. your call if you visit but I would not recommend for authentic Mexican or text Mex expectations. Fast 2.50 taco, well maybe.

Yelp
When Barbi comes here in hot pants and leans over the counter to order, it becomes Moonrise Taquito, but I don't have the pictures of that one yet. First time, I thought the breakfast tacos were really good and cheap and filling, and as far as Tex-Mex food goes, it did the trick. But after awhile, I brought Bae with me. We weren't as enthused about Sunrise Taquitos as we used to be. They were bit bland and service wasn't great. I still like them though, and they're cheap and well located in an area that doesn't have that much great Mexican food, because all the good Mexican food is a few miles away in Spring Branch and what not. If you're literally next to Memorial Park and literally want some good Tex-Mex then this is pretty much some of the cheapest and it's not bad.

Yelp
Houston has many, many many taco shops. All claim to be great or good but this one is the real deal. It is colocated with a Shell Gas Station on Memorial Drive. These ladies make the BEST breakfast tacos. The dining area is clean and the kitchen staff work with fresh ingredients. I always judge breakfast tacos by the quality of the tortillas. These are always fresh, the papas are thoroughly cooked, golden and crispy on outside and soft inside. The frijoles are not greasy or salty. Made fresh not salty. You can taste the quality of the beans used. Enjoy !

Yelp
THE BEST BREAKFAST TACOS IN HOUSTON This spot may be a turn off seeing it's in a gas station and the appearance isn't anything special. But the tacos are huge, fresh, and worth every penny. Usually eat 3 anywhere else, but 2 will fill you up here. Give them a try, you won't be disappointed.

Brad T.

Yelp
Awesome tacos and sauces! Consistent every time. I go by every time I am near there. The tamales are good too.
google avatar

Daniel V.

Yelp
Over priced for mediocre quality of food. Also very small portions. Save your money and go somewhere else.

L C.

Yelp
The staff was super rude and I watched them kick out a lady with a service dog because they said her dog couldn't be in there.

Greg S.

Yelp
Great tacos and breakfast plates. Portion sizes are good, great salsa. I only wish they were open longer each day!

Mikael R.

Yelp
Stopped by to get 2 potatoe tacos and wow!!! Tortillas are fresh, ingredients delicious, and portions are excellent! It's been a long time since I have had a great breakfast Taco!!! Loved this place! You must try their tacos!! Wish I had a picture but I ate it all, sorry! Highly recommend!

Yelp
These are the best breakfast tacos I have ever had in my entire life! Now that is saying something as I was born and raised in the city of San Antonio, Texas. This hidden gem is located in a very affluent area of Houston, the memorial park/river oaks area. I was stunned and shocked to find this wonderful little Mexican taco breakfast place. The few times that I have been there I have seen 3 to 4 older Hispanic women working away, slicing and dicing fresh ingredients and making fresh homemade tortillas. So it was very obvious that the tacos were going to taste very fresh and delicious. I personally had the potato and egg, bean and cheese, Barbacoa, and bacon and egg tacos, and they were phenomenal. The tacos were not too greasy and not too salty. They were a perfect combination of flavor and freshness. The homemade salsa is available and mild and hot and both add the perfect flavor to any of the tacos they sell. I can't emphasize enough how these are homemade to order using very fresh high-quality ingredients. you would not know it because this is attached to a gas station and well normally gas station food is not very good but this is definitely delicious and outstanding. It is also important to note that the coffee is very good not too strong and not too weak. I highly recommend this place if you are in the area or for any reason, these are well worth it.

Yelp
Best tacos hands down in the area, if you're looking for authentic tacos and hand made tortillas de harina this is the spot they close around 3 so don't miss out , be sure to order ahead so you don't have to wait long this place gets busy, hidden gem!
google avatar

Diane B.

Yelp
The ladies here are Awesome and the Tacos delish. Quick and clean. The tortillas were freshly made.

Yelp
Craved tacos... Ordered two tacos, a side of rice, and a side of beans. Flour tortillas: Tastes store bought and put on the comal for a home cooked taste. OKAY. Picadillo taco: Ground meat, potatoes, tiny pieces of onion. Tastes good enough to satisfy. Didn't dazzle. NO Carne Guisada taco: Flavorful, with chunks of stew type meat. Would get again. YES Rice: Taste homemade, like what your abuela would make. Pieces of tomato are throughout, giving rice a typical orange-stained color. Tiny corn and onion pieces give texture. YES Beans: Refried with what tastes like a hint of bacon grease. YES Green salsa: Tastes like VERY spicy green water. Red salsa: Tastes like watery blended tomatoes. I'll be back.

Charles B.

Yelp
The carne guisada plate is great. The meat falls apart. The tortillas are a little chewy, but taste great. And the ladies behind the counter are very nice!
google avatar

Eric M.

Yelp
The owner of this place must hate money. The place needs new employees who care about their job. It's unfortunate because the tacos are pretty good.

Ana V.

Yelp
Best tacos In town! Call ahead cause it could take long time to get your order. I feel like I'm eating mi abuelita's breakfast!

Matthew E.

Yelp
The breakfast tacos I had were really great, some of the best I've had in Houston (I'm from south Texas). But the lady working the register was really really rude and off putting. I had asked for one taco to be without egg, and she said no. Then she cut me off and gave me the total before I was done ordering. I didn't say anything though because I just wanted to leave At that point. Great food but horrible service. Not sure if it's worth going back.
google avatar

Al O.

Yelp
I'm a self proclaimed world tortilla connoisseur and always judge a place by the quality of their flour tortillas and with that said I won't be coming back again. The tortillas were horrible, missing key ingredients such as salt, lard and baking powder. The service took longer than average (I ordered 3 tacos), I will post my opinion on the food later.
google avatar

Yelp
At the end of the bike trail on Buffalo Bayou you have two choices: Subway, or Sunrise (adjacent to Shell station). I bought my 24 oz Coors Light for $2.50 and waited for my Quesadillas under the shady awnings while wondering how Houston has been unable to grasp the revenue potential of a "Bayou Walk," lined with restaurants!!?? Until they do, Sunrise May Be the best alternative. Anyway, cheap but cold, beer compensated for uninspired gas station lunch
google avatar

KeOshi P.

Yelp
I was doing an order for someone and I was excited to put this on my foodie list but very rude service. Definitely felt like there was discrimination on who received their orders first. About 3-4 people got their orders ASAP from when they order AFTER me while my 2x bean/rice tacos and 2x migas tacos took over 40min. When I asked for an ETA for the customer she said to give her time that she is working on it but gave a white man who order 30mins after my order (he order after my request for an ETA) his food in less than 10min. There was a black man waiting long before me who also experienced others' orders being taken and received before he got his own. I was about to cancel the order and ask for a refund for the customer when she just handed it to me with an attitude. I don't recommend supporting if you are a Black or Asian minority which is sad because we are all in the same boat politically speaking.
google avatar

Katelyn R.

Yelp
Best breakfast tacos in Houston. I could live off the flour tortillas alone. Their green salsa is one of my all time favorite things.

Fina G.

Yelp
Awful customer service if you are Hispanic. They only want to serve the white community. Left without ordering because they do not deserve my money.
google avatar

Isabel D.

Yelp
I stopped here while visiting Texas and was a little skeptical when I first drove up (since it's connected to a gas station) but am very, very glad that didn't deter me from trying the tacos! The breakfast tacos were super tasty and it was great because you can mix and match your fillings. I would definitely recommend anything with the potatoes or chorizo!
google avatar

Account M.

Yelp
Everything is made to order. So it may take a little longer for your order. Very small and one cook but worth it. It's delicious. Reminds me of good ol southern breakfast tacos. I've had bean and cheese, bacon and egg, chorizo egg and potatoes, chorizo and egg, Barbacoa, EVERYTHING WAS GREAT! I've lived all over Texas and these are up there. So good! MY NEW FAVORITE!
google avatar

Adrienne B.

Yelp
To the poor mistreated people complaining that it takes a long time... you did open your eyes and look at the operation, correct? Four women? One permanently on flour tortilla duty, two cooking everything, and one working the register and putting orders together? I'm sorry, would you rather they use Mission tortillas to speed up the process for you? How about opening a can for your beans? Oh, you wouldn't mind? Then you don't deserve this place. I get something different every time, but my go-to is the Migas plate. Large serving of Migas, some refried beans and potatoes, two fresh tortillas. $7.99. They don't salt the plate to death which is refreshing for a Mexican breakfast spot. I'll keep coming. I'm sure there's a Whataburger nearby if you'd like your food quicker.

Jake P.

Yelp
Ate there yesterday morning prior to going on my international flight to Thailand. The food gave me violent food poisoning. I am positive it was this restaurant bc that is the only thing I ate in the last 24 hrs prior. Used to love this place but needless to say, I won't be back. The health tho department needs to check this place pronto!

Gabby M.

Yelp
I go here every weekend for my usual order. They never disappoint and are the BEST in Houston.
google avatar

April F.

Yelp
Ordered 1 bacon/egg/cheese taco, 1 saus/egg/cheese taco and 1 Migas plate with chorizo! The lady who took my order over the phone was so sweet and helpful, went to pick up my order only a few minutes after placing it and it was already done! So quick :) she even remembered my name, packed 3 of both red & green sauces + added napkins and everything I needed! Such a great experience and I will definitely be recommending this place more often to my friends and family!
google avatar

Srini D.

Yelp
Worst experience. Ordered taco over phone 50 minutes before reaching the place. Had to wait 10 minutes before someone pay attention. It is mess, no order inside. Taco quality are bad. One person paid for his order and decided to leave without food due to bad service.
google avatar

Yesica H.

Yelp
My husband and used to love this place but it has gone down. Last time we went the bacon and egg taco were nice and filled. But the bean and cheese taco was a flat sliver of bean and cheese when they used to be a good amount. Especially when the prices were raised. And when they got to our table they weren't even hot like previous visits. I don't know if they were running low on ingredients but the past few visits have not been a good experience. Which were don't making a trip to this place since we live in Conroe. This was the only place that reminded us somewhat of San Antonio breakfast tacos
google avatar

Noe C.

Yelp
They open at 7 not 6:55am but at 7 or 6am like it says online or on their door. Lost my business before they even had it.

Constantine Z.

Yelp
Waited 40 minutes for tacos. Not worth the wait she needs to get it together. If they got a heating tray with soMe to-go tacos it would help their operation dramatically.
google avatar

Warren C.

Yelp
Place has grown on me... regulars get hooked up. I mean/ the coffee still sucks - but Starbucks is right by here! Haha
google avatar

Sarah N.

Yelp
Waited over 45 minutes for 4 breakfast tacos. Kept asking what our order was and saying it was almost ready. Definitely better and FASTER taco shops out there.
google avatar

Claire G.

Yelp
I love Sunrise Taquitos for a quick and tasty breakfast! The tacos are great, and it's nice to sit at the little outside tables, especially before or after a nice walk at Memorial Park.
google avatar

Carlos A.

Yelp
I wanted this to be a good experience. They are located perfectly on my drive into downtown. It's not hard to give good service and when so many other venues offer it as the standard it's easy to notice when service is off. The lady behind the counter seemed annoyed to have to take my order and was very short and dry. While not being the same way with the gentleman in front of me. And as most people have mentioned for some reason it takes longer than normal for them to make the tacos. Still if the food was at least quality its something you can kind of make do with. I ate half of one of the tacos and threw the other one away. There are too many quality options in the area with better service - its not worth your time to come here in my opinion. I wouldn't recommend coming here.
google avatar

Kate L.

Yelp
Really delicious breakfast tacos - the migas are perfectly tender-crunchy and the flour tortillas are the bomb.
google avatar

Roberto C.

Yelp
Great neighborhood breakfast spot connected to the gas station. Yes, the gas station. Here's the deal... if you're looking for fine dining or you're a super picky eater... this isn't the place for you. That said, if ya like homemade tortilla, a straight forward menu, and awesome food as if it were made in grandma's kitchen, this is the place. The homemade tortillas are great and love getting the chorizo and egg or the huevos a la mexicana plate.

Emily W.

Yelp
1 star for bad service. I *kindly* asked the lady working the register for one extra small container of salsa when she was handing me my order. She told me no and that she doesn't have extra. There were two containers full of salsa prepped for to go orders and a huge container of salsa behind her. I asked again and she told me no again... didn't even give me the option to buy one extra ounce of salsa. The tacos are okay but definitely not good enough to justify going back again. Save your time and money and go to El Rey.

Michael D.

Yelp
Tortilla are good, that's about it. Took almost 30 minutes between ordering to when I got my food, plus another 5 minutes of standing in line before ordering. Bacon and Egg taco barely had any bacon (see picture). Infinite number of better breakfast tacos places around town

Kevin B.

Yelp
Amazing tacos but the boss lady is not friendly at all. And it seems she works her workers to the bone. I think she needs to retire
google avatar

Mallory M.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years for breakfast on weekends. The tacos are so fresh and the green salsa is the best. We call our order in since it gets very busy on the weekends (because they're awesome) and it's always ready for us when we get there.
google avatar

Hector A.

Yelp
The tacos here are amazing. Quality ingredients, everything is fresh made to order. Everything(except the corn tortillas) is made on premises. Sometimes the cashier can be unfriendly, but, as a regular, I have no issue with her. Try greeting her first with a friensly good morning and that will go a long way.
google avatar

Nam N.

Yelp
If they had a 500 taco club, I would probably have qualified for the t-shirt here. This is the place I like to go to after my training runs around Memorial Park. They make the eggs fresh to order. Also connected to a gas station, so it's great if you want to get some drinks and other snacks with your breakfast tacos here. Since they do make the eggs fresh, when it gets busy be prepared to wait 15 plus minutes on your order. One way to save time is to place the order over the phone, and pick up to go if you are in a rush. Overall good place to get some fresh made breakfast tacos!
google avatar

JaDaven E.

Yelp
There's a reason you come to Yelp and not google reviews. I always feel Yelp is a better representation of rated food spots. I say this because this is something like 4.5 stars on google and 3.5 here I believe. I alway think maybe google would get it right and never do. So to the review. Hmmmmm it was a slight average breakfast taco. I got chorizo and egg with cheese and a sausage egg and cheese. I will say the size of these tacos are pretty decent for a breakfast taco! But flavor ehhhh idk just lacking it for me. Eggs were just eggs, no salt, no pepper. Texture of the eggs were ok. The meat were ok, nothing to run home about. And the cheese to me was the worst of all. My cheese wasn't melted it was greesy and just wasn't pleasant to me. I felt if they added a little salt maybe some pepper I'd say it was a good taco but because of the lack of those two important seasonings I'll leave it at just meh. An ok taco at best! OH YEA THE TORTILLAS! I thought the tortillas was pretty good. Def made in store and I enjoyed that part of it! All in all I probably won't be coming here! And I more or less wouldn't recommend anyone who'd ask me for a breakfast taco location!! One more thing! The salsa was a no go for me. No flavor WHATSOEVER
google avatar

Andrew B.

Yelp
Food is tasty, but the serving sizes are ridiculously small for the price $3/taco. Additionally, took 32 minutes to get 4 tacos (not even a line during this time) . Also got the order wrong. Avoid and take your love for tacos elsewhere.
google avatar

Yumi J.

Yelp
I'd never been before but was hungry and driving by the parking lot was packed so I figured it must be good. I ordered the machacado plate to go. This was $8.99 plus tip and tax makes this a breakfast over $10. The 2x tortillas are hand made, the eggs are great and so are the beans. This easily makes two large tacos you can share. I wasn't wowed, but the food is good, it's just there's better breakfast out there for $10. I'd give it 3-1/2 to 4 stars. I should note, I spoke with a few of the customers and they were all repeat customers from near by, one lady raved about the place. If I was in the neighborhood again and needed a quick meal I'd eat here again.
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
I'm not much of a breakfast burritos person but recently I was in the area and I was actually near this joint before it stopped serving and just had to try it due to everyone's high reviews. I tried a carne guisada and barbacoa taco and the barbacoa breakfast plate. Their barbacoa was ok nothing special, but the carne guisada was the best I've ever had. The beef was so tender and flavorful!
google avatar

Melanie K.

Yelp
DISGUSTING!!! I watched the cashier restock sugar, windex the counter, HANDLE MONEY, NOT WASH HER HANDS and then handle food and make someone's taco... GROSS!! Do you wash your hands after the bathroom?? I bet no! Walked out, should have gotten a refund but was too disgusted..... hey health department, go check them out in
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
This place serves the best breakfast tacos in the city. Hands down! Come early on the weekend as the line can get long.
