My husband and I moved to Seattle from LA/West Hollywood in May, and were blown away by the cost of living (especially since I wrongly assumed everywhere outside CA would be cheaper). During our apartment hunt, Sunset Electric was the third complex we visited and was by far the nicest, and fit most of our criteria. The lease is long, but we expected as much with the quality of the building - and we read the lease thoroughly, which most people don't (which is why we weren't surprised by the additional month-to-month fees, when initial deposits were due and for how much, parking fees, etc.). Maybe we've been renting for too long, but we never expect to get a security deposit back - although it's always nice if we do. If we get back $40 from our SE $400 deposit (like others mention), we'll go to the movies.
The parking fee is expensive, but again, coming from LA, we're used to paying a high price for the convenience of storing our car - which is basically what we've been doing since we can walk everywhere (to work, grocery stores, theaters, downtown, Pike Place...).
The management and maintenance teams have been extremely pleasant, and they always say hi and wave whenever we're coming or going (which is a breath of fresh air for this native southerner). And I can't really begrudge an apartment complex for wanting to advertise/fill its units; plus, I like that the entryway is illuminated - feels a bit more secure.
As far as the building design goes, I enjoy how it marries the historic with the contemporary, the openness of the atrium-like interior, and the other LEED touches - definitely preferred to the claustrophobic interior hallways and shoddy materials of most new construction. The coffee machine has been nice - and while it does conk out on occasion (*sad trombone*), it's also a ridiculous First World luxury that we can do without, and wasn't a deal-breaker for us looking elsewhere; after all, as some of the other commentators mention, there're plenty of coffee shops within a stone's throw. We've yet to have any issues with hot water, or anything else with the unit, and while it was initially annoying to have the bedroom be so illuminated at night (from the alcove lights), we just put up curtains.
Is there ambient noise at night from clubs (like Purr), rooftop revelry, or general street noise (sirens from the police station next door, etc.)? Sure. But we're in the middle of a city - it's to be expected, and the units are well insulated.
Again, maybe we've been renting for too long, or we haven't been here long enough, but for now we're just glad to (1) Not have slumlords; (2) Not have insane neighbors who complain about every little noise we make; and (3) Feel safe/secure in our home. I only wish we had friendly(ier) neighbors. So many residents we say hi to or smile at just glower (maybe the parents didn't send their beebie's rent check this month?). Cheer up, people - you live in a beautiful city, and a nice apartment complex. THERE ARE RAINBOW CROSSWALKS OUTSIDE! Remember how fortunate you are to have such petty problems.
