The experience was just okay. We paid for a 2-hour ride, but it was clear that none of the guides were particularly eager to take us out. While the owner/manager was friendly, there's definitely room for improvement in the overall experience from start to finish.
For instance, if someone buys a Sunset Ranch scarf, it's likely they're a tourist or someone who's never ridden a horse before and is looking for a memorable experience. It would be a nice touch to ask if they need help putting it on. Even if they decline, it shows that you care. We asked one of the passing guides for help, and while she assisted with a smile, when I asked her to help with our other kid, I suddenly felt like I was imposing on her time:) I realized later that she's one of the guides and they get paid on tip. OK, fair enough. I get it.
We awkwardly waited for about 15 minutes after our scheduled booking time before someone informed us that we'd be going out next. The guides seem to make more money in tips ($20-30/person) with larger groups, which are typically on the 1-hour rides. I wouldn't recommend the 2-hour rides, but not for that reason; the saddles were incredibly uncomfortable, and after about 40 minutes, I was ready for the ride to end. For most people, especially if you're taller, I think a 1-hour ride is fine.
Our group of three was eventually paired with a guide who spoke enough English for us to understand. He seemed to be the one who actually took care of the horses, as the other guides were asking him to find suitable horses for the guests. He was super friendly, and I'd definitely prefer to have him as our guide next time. I even asked my cousin to practice her Spanish with him, but she was too shy. His English was good enough to describe the spectacular views we were seeing, though. After the ride, I tipped him $100 for the three of us. This gentleman is a real gem and I'd recommend him to anyone!
