Sunset Station Serves a Sensational Staycation ...
We stayed at Sunset Station Casino, July 26-29 2024, 1301 W Sunset Rd, Henderson, NV 89014, for my grandson's JBT Championship Bowling Tournament. We're locals, so this is a staycation for us! We've had staycations at many local Las Vegas hotel casinos, but this is our first time at Sunset Station.
First impressions and check in: Due to our not so lovely weather (28 days straight triple digit heat wave averaging 116°), I opted for covered parking to lessen "hot car syndrome" even though free "valet" was recommended for check in. Free parking at casinos always gets bonus points from me, and Station Casinos still have free parking. Park in the casino front if you want to be near check in, and in the concrete covered parking out back if you want a cooler summer car. We asked for early check in, which cost extra, but the lovely gals at check in explained there was additonal fees between 9am-12n, but from 12n to 3pm if a room is available then no charge for early check in. More bonus points for Sunset!
We checked in "early" at exactly 12n, no extra charge. It was fast, the clerk was cheerful and offered lots of guidance and extras, plus a nice room selection. We headed to our room on the requested 7th floor. A long walk down a secluded hallway takes us to a day time security guard, then to an elevator requiring a hotel card to access. You'll really like that extra level of security. The guard seems mostly for screening pool guests, since some casinos offer pool passes to locals, but still like that extra level.
The room was standard (see pics) with two queens, table and chairs, tv, and dresser. More bonus points for a separate dressing area (sink, mirrors, towels) outside the bathroom shower area. The room and bath were clean, included blackout curtains, and icy a/c (set it cool as you want) for the outside 113° weather.
The casino has a nice circular type set up. A long circular walk takes you past nearly everything, then right back to the parking garage. There are dozens of places to eat from Starbucks and Panda Express to a coffee shop and oyster bar. They were running a food special of 8 different dishes for $8 at the Italian restaurant (yummy choices), but my favorite meal was at the Oyster Bar where I ordered 1/2 lb of chilled large peel-and-eat shrimp with a side basket of bread for only $14 (no charge for the bread). Service was wonderful at both restaurants, plus I was sitting with friends and the servers didn't make a fuss over separate checks, and actually got the orders right. It's nice to eat somewhere that trains it servers well and they even add a smile.
As I said at the beginning, we were attending my grandson's JBT Championship Bowling Dinner and Tournament. Sunset's 72 lane bowling alley Strike Zone was hosting a few hundred bowlers and their families for four days in a row. We booked three nights to make a mini-stay-vacay part of the enjoyment. The bowling alley staff were amazing, generous, happy (I love service with a smile) and on their toes. I don't know how, but the snack bar kept up with orders, plus food wasn't heavily over-priced and actually tasted fairly good. They let us use extra chairs from the bar and restaurant for adequate seating. I mention this because most places do not! The Strike Zone handled this over-flowing crowd with ease and, again - smiles. (See pics)
Check out was a breeze. We held the room on a credit card but prefer paying cash at check out. We were able to pay the entire bill at the counter, then use the kiosk key drop for check out ... no lines, no wait, easy as pie!
As locals, we have stayed at about a dozen Las Vegas casinos, several quite elegant, one or two very cheap, and quite few in the middle. I have to say, we really liked the price, the upper class restaurants and many walk up fast food choices, the casino layout, (especially) free parking, great service from the entire casino staff, variety of slot play, children's choices including Kid's Quest day care and bowling, and can I say, Wow? All in one place!
We stayed four days without a single complaint! That pulls a full five stars out of me! Wish I could have made it 10 - and that's from experienced locals with 50 years of staycations. We highly recommend Sunset Station Casino, our new favorite in Las Vegas.
