You know, sometimes it really is better to be lucky than good. Given how long I've been meaning to check out Irving Subs, it would seem somewhat counterintuitive that I'd end up coming to Sunset Subs for a sandwich when I was in the area, considering the two are only a few blocks away from each other. However, much to my delight (and utter surprise), that the two are actually sister locations to each other! Talk about blind luck, being able to essentially knock off two places from my list at once. Sigh, if only my good fortune could've been used on something like that billion dollar mega millions drawing instead...HA!
In all seriousness, even though I didn't realize Sunset Subs was connected to Irving Subs until I had already ordered (who would have guessed they would have two location so close together?), I was no less excited to come here after scouting their menu on their window one day. With over two dozen sandwiches on their menu, including an array of breakfast and vegetarian/vegan sandwiches, Sunset Sub certainly isn't lacking in the way of options for people to choose from!
**All of their sandwiches include lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, pickles, pepperoncini, brown mustard, house garlicky mayo, salt & pepper, and house vinaigrette unless otherwise specified.

Not amazing, but not bad either. Although I couldn't taste the prosciutto, I liked the coppa and salami and thought the pesto sauce was pretty tasty. If I could've changed one thing, I think hot coppa might have worked better, if only to add some spice and differentiate from the salami.

I didn't originally intend on getting so similar to the Goodfellas, but I'm glad I did. Of the two, I thought the meats in this one meshed better together and were complemented nicely by the roast red peppers (not super sweet).
Across both of the sandwiches I tried (though more so with the Goodfellas), and as several other Yelpers have already noted, is that they were loaded with veggies. While that's obviously not an inherently bad thing (veggies are good for you!), it did make them feel like they were short on meat. Granted, it's quite possible that the amount was actually fine and that the ratio was just thrown off by all of the lettuce and tomatoes, but I could see my friend's point that they also just served as "filler" (he mentioned that the two ends of his order felt like he was eating a salad between two slices of bread.
In spite of our (mild) complaints, the appeal of what Sunset Subs (and Irving Subs, by extension) is more than apparent. Even though some of the menu options only have slight variations from each other (evidenced by the two that I tried), most of the sandwiches are still rather appealing. So much so that we still came back after our first visit here and I wouldn't be shy about doing it again. They may not hold up against my favorite spot in the Sunset (Lou's!), and they're priced slightly higher, but I wouldn't be staunchly opposed to coming back, especially to try one of their breakfast sandwiches!
THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded down for now.
