A friendly Oceanside counter-service spot where comforting ramen shares the menu with poke and plates. Noted in local coverage of Yelp’s Top 100 Ramen in California; generous portions and vegan choices make it a North County go-to.

The sushi here is tasty and fresh, and the location is really nice—close to the ocean. Only downside is you gotta stand in line to order, and they don’t give you a menu ahead of time. So you end up deciding what you want right at the register, which slows things down. Other than that, it’s great. Sushi comes out fast, and the staff is super friendly. Definitely recommend!

Google
The food was excellent! We tried several dishes, including karaage, sushi, katsu curry, and a couple of others I can’t quite remember, and we were happy with everything. It was a pleasant surprise to see katsu curry on the menu. The service was quick, and the staff was very friendly. This is clearly a popular spot—though we arrived before the dinner rush, the seats filled up fast.

Google
Sunshine Kitchen is our sushi place! Great customer service and delicious sushi! They have their menus up front and you can grab one in line to look over what you want and you can order when you are up front. They give you a number and you can either sit inside or outside. They do have heaters outside if it gets chilly. My fiancé and I love having their sushi and if it’s too crowded, we always take it home.

Google
We've been here a few times when in the area. This time we ordered a chicken teriyaki plate - chicken teriyaki over rice, salad and scoop of their Japanese potato salad - and a side of the potato salad and the tempura calamari. The teriyaki was good. The potato salad had a similar consistency to what you would get at a Korean restaurant and a nice peppery flavor. The calamari was light and served with two sauces - tempura sauce and a nice aioli. Service was quick. Place has indoor and covered patio seating. Inclusive restrooms.

Google
DO NOT EAT HERE IF YOU HAVE ALLERGY OR DIETARY RESTRICTIONS. This place has incorrect listing of what is in their dishes I ordered the Stir-Fried Tofu & Vegetable Bowl. On the website it says "Stir-fried tofu & vegetables (Carrots, Green onion, Yellow onion, Zucchini, Mushrooms, Beansprouts, Broccoli) with a side of steamed white rice." When i got home i opened to see theres corn, peppers and green beans added that were not listed on the menu. Not a fan of pepeprs and I have a allergy to corn. Waste of money.

Google
Came on Mother’s Day, I wanted ramen and my husband wanted poke so this place was perfect! They had lots of choices and it’s not like “oh this is a ramen place that also has sushi/poke” everything tasted delicious! Customer service was awesome too. Everyone was friendly, helpful and hustled. They truly take care of everyone. Check this place out!

Google
This place used to be great. The poke bowls are delicious and good quality, but in the last year, the bowls have consistently gotten smaller and smaller in size. Now they are barely half a bowl with sprinkles of ingredients on top. This place is no longer worth the price for such a small amount of food.

Google
Food was amazing!! Customer service was the best, would definitely come again. Came from far to visit this place and me and my family of 11 had a great time. Reasonable price and sushi rolls were pretty big. We even got to take food home since there were big portions. LOVED IT!!!

Yelp
My dear friend's mom owns this restaurant and we knew we had to come to support The staff is incredible friendly and the restaurant had good music taste when we went . We ordered calamari tempura, summer roll (this is a new roll! i love a good spicy tuna & salmon combo), the shoyu ramen (the broth is super light and veryyy good!), and the beef gyudon bowl (a special!) The restaurant serves authentic japanese food so if you need a good place to satisfy your craving, come here

Yelp
Needed to take a lunch break on the way down to San Diego. Tesla supercharger right around the corner at the back parking lot so it was really convenient. Sunshine is a casual eatery with a good variety of Japanese/Japanese fusion dishes. I find them to be reasonable in terms of freshness/quality to what you'd get at Mitsuwa - like more grocery quality than fine dining restaurant quality. It is what I expect for the price I paid. The lunch specials have a lot of choices and was very good. They have both indoor and patio dining (patio is shaded/covered by a roof), but it is not a very large space. We'd stop here again in the future.

Yelp
We had to charge our car so we tried sunshine kitchen. It's so good! I probably won't make a special trip for it but the food is very solid. Gyoza udon noodles, soup was good, the gyoza were ok. Broth was nice, udon was nice and chewy. Sushi, rice was flavored nicely - just good flavors. Poke bowl was delicious. Fish wasn't fishy. The sunshine sauce was sweet and slightly spicy. Very different sauce than normal poke. There's also outside seating that is slightly closed off so that was nice! Just good vibes all around.
google avatar

Yelp
Another delicious lunch here! It was busy but our food came out quickly. We ordered our usual poke bowls, fresh and flavorful for a hot day. They have some cold noodle/soup options for summer which sound like a great alternative if you're not in the mood for hot food or sushi. Until next time!

Yelp
This place was cute, great and fast service, lots to chose from on the menu. We love a good plaza spot with plenty of parking. Food tasted really hot and fresh and great value for the amount you get. My son had sushi rolls and said it was and 8 out of 10. And they were gigantic in size so two rolls for a 22 year old was cheap because the boy can eat. I gave four stars because it was good, a nice casual spot to grab anytime. If I lived close I could see me ordering for pickup a few times.

Yelp
Sunshine Kitchen is such a gem. We came in for dinner and everything was delicious and super fresh. I had the salmon skin hand roll and the Alaskan roll -- both were perfect. The hand roll was surprisingly buttery (salmon belly), and the Alaskan roll was light and tasty with a fair bit of masago. My boyfriend went for the pork cutlet curry, the rainbow roll, and the dragon roll. He had been here once before and the food was still just as good. The curry was really good - and had a solid serving size. The vibe in the restaurant is really relaxed and friendly, and the service was kind and attentive without being overbearing. You order at the counter and they give you a number stand to place at the table, so it was nice to not be disturbed much during eating. The waitress did offer a free refill of the fountain drink he got, which was nice. Definitely one of those places you find yourself wanting to come back to often. Five stars all the way.

Yelp
You would not expect this place to have a variety of sushi and Ramen and Katsu plates, but that is exactly what sunshine kitchen has. The menu is like a dictionary and there's a variety of options for you to choose from that can fit every pallet. We opted for the Ramen and I would say the Thanh Katsu Ramen was better than the show you Ramen however overall both service and we got was pretty good. We also got a Terry chicken and tempura plate with also getting a side of chicken karrage. The whole restaurant is run pretty much like a café and the interior design is like a tropical café. With a try if you're in the area

Yelp
I went to lunch with a friend the day after attending a Yelp event in Carlsbad, and she recommended this restaurant to me. Restaurants run by Japanese chefs cater to Japanese tastes. The interior is not fancy, but taste is the most important thing for me, so it's fine. I ordered the lunch special, a teriyaki chicken and California loin set, and my friend ordered a poke bowl. I also tried my friend's bowl; both were delicious and reasonably priced. There is outdoor seating, so you can bring your pet to eat. Parking is in front of the restaurant.

Yelp
The ramen is top tier. Deluxe roll is my favorite sushi roll I've ever eaten, cannot be beat. Had a few other things, all fantastic. Highly recommend

Yelp
Good food. Ordered the Vegas Roll, Oceanside Roll, and Karaage. Yummy and price is good too. The wait staff was efficient and nice. The restaurant is close to the beach so we didn't have to go too far. Ample parking and place is clean and nice.
google avatar

Gale R.

Yelp
Fish lovers roll was pretty good-- yellow tail, albacore, salmon, fish eggs , eel. Didn't seem like a good quantity of fish. The Oceanside roll with tempura was much better. Udon noodle tempura and vegetarian were good. Tempura light and tasty. My son enjoyed the chicken Katsu with curry...... Service quick. Ambiance clean. Busy....

Jamie Lee H.

Yelp
My family and I absolutely love this place, but every time we have been going lately, the portions have been getting smaller and smaller, and the prices have been going up and up! They even charge extra for soy sauce! (Apparently, more than two packets of soy sauce is considered extra even when you have multiple sushi rolls, Poké bowls, etc.) Pretty bummed out with them!
google avatar

Jasmine M.

Yelp
Place was clean and quiet. The staff is nice and can help you with the specials.. just ask. My food was very fresh and tasty.. no fishy taste. I liked it but I would like the option of mango or pineapple. The ambiance is nice but a little too quiet for me. The parking is plenty and you don't have to park in the street. I would like to come back for lunch.

Heather P.

Yelp
Service and quality of food has been top notch for the several years we have been going there. If anything, there have more people coming in. Looks like they have added some staff to meet the demand. It is not "fine dining," in that one orders at the counter, and food is brought to the table. It is a modest milieu, but exceptionally clean, and well maintained. Food has always been excellent, and service, excellent, despite the apparent volume of take out orders. Can't say enough about the operation here. We love it. Just hope that good reviews don't spoil the goodness---
google avatar

Bill S.

Yelp
Found this unassuming Japanese restaurant after a performance at the high school across the street. Ordered at the counter where the service was very friendly. We ordered a LOT....gyoza, edamame, chicken karaage, tempura, ramen, sushi rolls, pork katsu curry, chicken teriyaki, yellowfin kama, pork fried rice, sake. It ALL HIT THE SPOT. Delicious. Nothing fancy, just well executed. So glad to find this restaurant!
google avatar

Harinder K.

Yelp
Locally owned, comfortable diner-like atmosphere, and consistently good. Service is friendly and adept. Katsu and tempura are spot on. Most all of the rolls contain Krab, which is too bad. But, you can ask them to leave it out. Nothing fancy here, but a reliable spot.

Yelp
I've ordered takeout from Sunshine Kitchen before when in the area. A similar menu to Teri Cafe but prices have gone up a bit since my last visit. I ordered their chicken & beef bowl plus spicy tuna handroll & it was over $20. The chicken was dry & beef stringy. Spicy tuna handroll made up for it , being really good. Maybe I should stick to their sushi. We've had their entrees before & enjoyed the food. So I'll continue to order from here & update my review if warranted. This visit had slow service & the chicken & beef bowl was just okay. Maybe just an off day.

David T.

Yelp
Great place. Food was all hot and fresh. It didn't take long to get our orders. Started with the chicken karate and gyoza, both were great. The chicken was outstanding. I got a samurai roll and the CA combo. Wife got chicken Katsu. Mom got a ramen bowl, don't recall which one. Dad got dinner combo #2.

Yelp

Yelp
This is a no frills family owned restaurant located off the 5. They're across Oside high in the Walmart/Wendys shopping plaza. We started going here pre-pandemic and I'm so glad they're still around. Everything here is GOOD! The best part is they have such an extensive menu that you could fill any craving. Food. * Vegan ramen. Their vegan ramen is some of the best I've had. Even my kids love it! * Edamame. The portions for edamame is generous (especially since other places charge the same price for smaller bowls). * Karaage. You could get 3 pieces or 5 pieces. But if you get 5 pieces you might as well pay $1 more and get the karaage lunch special! It includes rice and salad. * Sunshine fries. This is a family favorite. Our kids love the sauce, fries, and the adults eat the chicken. The sauce really makes this side dish amazing! * Bake salmon roll. My favorite roll here yet. If you like salmon, you have to try this at least once. Restrooms. * Gender neutral * Sinks are outside the restrooms Service. Is great! We've had to make modifications to some items when we order and they haven't skipped a beat. They get it right every time! You can score a pretty good deal with their lunch specials! You can even order them after lunch for just + $1 more.

Yelp
Walked into Sunshine Kitchen hoping for tuna that whispers secrets, rice that hums jazz, maybe a sliver of uni that rewires your brainstem. What I got? Not quite. This place isn't exactly chasing Michelin stars--it's writing love letters to Japanese mall food under fluorescent lights. Don't let the Yelp hype fool you. This isn't that. It's a bento box done with surprising discipline. The ramen? Legit. Broth's got backbone. Noodles got spring. The sushi? Tight. Clean. No frills, no drama. You want toro that dissolves like a bad memory? Look elsewhere. You want a spicy tuna roll and miso that won't betray you during a Tuesday lunch spiral? You're in the right place. It's more Sushi Stop than Nobu, and proudly so. Think microwave meets mirin, but handled by someone who gives a damn. Teriyaki bowls, poke, spam musubi--it's fast food, but not lazy. Competence is the theme. Execution over ambition. Three stars if you're hungover. Four if you're feeling generous. Not a fever dream. Not a destination. But it's honest, and I think that counts for alot.

Yelp
We really enjoy it here! Food is great. Nice relaxed atmosphere. Very friendly staff. Dog friendly seating on the patio.
google avatar

Marylynn M.

Yelp
There's plenty of indoor space and parking for this spot. They also have some outdoor patio space. It gives you an open air vibe with simple decorations. You order at the front and pay before receiving your food which I would say is pretty good! The servers are nice and helpful. We'd go back again to try other stuff. :)

Yelp
Was looking for a simple sushi spot for a very early lunch snack and since they open at 1030, we ended up here. Korean owned Japanese food. Plenty of free parking in their lot. Decor is very cute. There is an artificial grass wall in the outside patio. Outside dining available, perfect if you have pets. You order at the counter, pay, they give you a number and bring you your food. If you need anything else, you have to walk up to the counter to ask. There are no utensils, water refills or anything accessible. You have to go and ask for anything extra that is needed. Staff is ok. Restrooms are located in the back. Sinks are communal outside of the restrooms. Food came out very quickly. They have many options on their menu, including ramen, poke, yakisoba, sushi, salads etc. So great options if you have a large group with multiple craves. The sushi was good. Felt a bit queasy as I was driving off but luckily the feeling went away. Overall great inexpensive spot.

Yelp
Excellent Japanese food!! Great service and an authentic family owned and run restaurant. Can't wait to come back.

Delilah S.

Yelp
We ordered the teriyaki bowl and sunshine ramen. Everything was delicious except both of our chicken was super dry. Maybe they over cooked or rushed it but yeah hopefully their chicken isn't dry again.

Yelp
Delicious food and friendly staff, I will definitely come back! I recommend without doubt (;

Yelp
Excellent food. We ordered a number of other things (karaage, sushi, katsu curry, forget what else) and happy with all of it. Pleasant surprise to find they offer katsu curry. Quick service. Friendly staff. Popular place. We went before dinner rush and the seats filled up quickly.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food for a really great price! Love that they have an outdoor seating area so I got to eat out there with my dog.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good food and pricing is reasonable. Favorite is the chicken teriyaki plate. It gives you some of everything

Yelp
Great breakfast. Very popular and great food. We ate here with friends and everyone loved it. The eggs Benedict's were amazing. It was super busy, but we still got decent service. You may have a wait, be prepared to wait or call ahead.

Yelp
WHOA I can completely understand why this place is rated so highly! Cannot say enough good things about this dish. (sweet, savory, umami). CRUNCHY DELICIOUS TEXTURE AS WELL.! (OCEANSIDE SPECIAL ROLL) Shrimp Tempura, Crab. Topped with Avocado, Soft Shell Crab, Mixed With Spicy Mayo, Green Onions , Sesame Seeds and Eel sauce drizzle SO YUMMY #AnazFoodZandFriendZ #AsianFoodIsMyFavorite

Yelp
Needed some ramen and found this spot near our spot nearby, I ordered the Sunshine Ramen, it was decent, not used to a pork tonkatsu on top but it was okay. My favorite was the calamari tempura!. My daughter ordered the soba noodle soup with tempura and she said the seaweed made the broth too salty for her. The staff was friendly but they don't really offer much or follow up. Place was clean and well maintained.

Yelp
Conveniently located off the Interstate which gave us a break from being in traffic. Sunshine Kitchen is located on the opposite end of Wal Mart Neighborhood Market next door to a taco shop and Pho place. Huge outdoor patio with heaters. It's a Japanese restaurant serving curries, rice bowls, plates, rolls, poke, fried rice, ramen, yakisoba/udon, hot soba/udon, salads and sides. We ordered: -spicy garlic edamame: Great garlicky sauce -Takoyaki: The least fav of all, it was a giant ball that had too much wheat flour that we just plucked out the tiny bit of octopus -chicken karaage curry over steamed rice: We asked for a higher spice level and it had all the right spice and curriness. -Oceanside roll: OMG this roll is so good. Fresh thin slices of avocado and soft shell crab. Inside had more crab and shrimp tempura. -Dinner plate #2 (chicken teriyaki over fried rice, 2 gyoza, mix tempura, Japanese potato salad, and green salad): Had a mix of everything. My fav was the Oceanside roll with the soft shell crab and avocado topping. The dinner plate was huge but I'm not a fan of the teriyaki sauce. It was thicker than normal and overly sweet. I was surprised a small place that has their hands dipped in everything may not be as good but I was wrong. The service was wonderful. You order and pay first before you sit. Sunshine Kitchen is on our list to return if we need to dodge traffic again. 4.5 stars, bumping to a 5

Ryan F.

Yelp
Very friendly and welcoming, quick service, great food! Ordered the Beef Gyudon bowl and it was great. Loved the touch of ginger on top. Definitely would recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
The service was great by the staff. They offer a welcoming environment with tasty food. It was ironically a cold day this winter so I stopped by to try the Chicken Soba. The buckwheat noodles were delicious served with great portion. Overall a yummy spot to try. I'm coming back to bring the family next time & try everything else.

Yelp
Great food that satisfied all my picky eaters ! We are from out of town and were 110% happy with our experience. Service was quick and polite which made our visit more enjoyable. Clean and relaxing atmosphere. Our order included ... spicy miso ramen, vegan Ramen (super impressed and full of flavor) , tempera , teriyaki chicken with fried rice, spicy chicken, dinner plate #2, and a few rolls. I forgot to take pictures
google avatar

Yelp
Food is great and fresh, prices aren't bad either, quality is there for sure. Workers are all very polite and make you feel welcome.

Yelp
This place has great food & great prices. The servings are a good size as well! My favorite is the Philly roll and the loaded fries!
google avatar

Yelp
The food is really good! We ordered salmon poke, chicken kaarage (yum), sushi rolls. Service is amazing, very friendly! Will definitely come back. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Ordered ah-mazing food to go. Was ready when i arrived and everything was there. Food was great as well

Yelp
Sunshine Kitchen is in a big plaza with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. This is the type of restaurant where you order and sit. Customer service had great vibes, very accommodating. We ordered the shrimp curry, crunch roll and monkey roll - all very tasty. I love that their menu has variety!
google avatar

Addy W.

Yelp
The service was pretty bad! I walked in with a couple behind me and the only thing the lady at the register was concerned of was that they closed in 30 mins. Even though when we walked in it was 8:20... and they closed at 9. Made for a ick since this was my 1st time at this place. To make matters worst, she seemed to try to disregard me and attempted to take the couple behind me order first. I almost left after that. Convince to stay we ordered to go. The food was that great. I definitely won't be back.
google avatar

Daniela A.

Yelp
This place is pretty decent. Came here for lunch with some friends during work. Walk right up to the counter and ordered our food. It's a Japanese restaurant with a lot of Japanese items to choose from. We ordered the chicken karaage, house fried rice, Philadelphia hand roll and the sunshine ramen. The chicken karaage was pretty good but it isn't not karrage. Yes it was lightly batter and fried but not at all karaage. The batter had too much pepper but the chicken was good quality thigh meat. The Philadelphia hand roll was also good, great quality salmon. The house fried rice was decent nothing special. And the sun shin ramen lacked umami. No tonkotsu flavor, kind of over powered by pepper. The service was good and the restaurant had a welcoming vibe to it. I'd like to try other items on the menu but the food was really just a bit better than good. Nothing special.
google avatar

Mirit A.

Yelp
Great food! We ordered tuna and salmon poke bowls. They were delicious and decently priced. The chicken teriyaki bowl was way too good! The service is fast and very friendly, with a relaxed vibe and welcoming ambiance. This place has decent sushi rolls, but I would not go there for the sushi. Rather, the poke bowls are memorable!
google avatar

Christine S.

Yelp
Fresh food, fast service. They pay attention to detail. Good selection of sushi, poke, ramen, yakisoba, teriyaki. Something for everyone. Has a Hawaiian theme with the potato salad on the plate (pretty good tasting) Reasonably priced with most bowls and plates under $15. The atmosphere is very chill with ambient music playing in the background.
google avatar

Krysten S.

Yelp
A super solid lunch spot. The prices are very fair and I think the variety of food choices are nice when you're not really sure what you want. I usually get the karaage plate and get a hand roll on the side. Sometimes I switch it up but I'm usually set on my chicken and rice. The service is usually fair and they're nice, nothing too crazy. The vibe is chill and I think that's kind of what you want when you're just trying to enjoy an easy meal. Good food and relaxed vibes is a must for me sometimes when I don't wanna think about any frills.
google avatar

Lorenzo M.

Yelp
First time dining here. This establishment is a hidden gem in the community. I must say they take cleanliness seriously. That is great! You can dine inside or outside the restaurant. Plenty of tables to go around. A great amount of food choices here. The staff here is great. The food was fresh and tasty. My dishes hit the spot! If you're ever in the neighborhood. GET SOME!!!

Yelp
Favorite to go sushi place, always ready on time and so good, super affordable and conveniently located with lots of parking to go in and out. The indoor and outdoor dining areas are clean and service is great if you decide to eat in. My favorite is the Oceanside roll and spring rolls! Friendly faces working the front
