Nancy Palese, Nancy’s Stuffed Pizza Namesake, Dies at Age 87 - Eater Chicago

"Rocco Palese opened the original Nancy’s Pizza in 1974, proclaiming it 'Home of the Original Stuffed Pizza,' a boast its 31 franchises continue today. Rocco was inspired by his mother’s recipe for scarciedda, an Italian double-crusted Easter pie stuffed with meat and cheese. Nancy's Pizza became known for its unique stuffed pizza, and although the Paleses faced challenges, including a difficult decade with bombings that made the business uninsurable, Nancy’s Pizza became a recognizable name. In 1977, they expanded with two more locations in Niles and Oak Lawn, and eventually, the franchising business was taken national in the '90s. Today, Nancy’s Pizza is recognized for its original stuffed pizza recipe, which remains unchanged, honoring Nancy and Rocco's legacy." - aimee.levitt

A bunch of us at work threw down for pizza and ordered from this location. The food was delivered in a timely manner and was fresh and hot upon arrival. The pizzas were delicious. I opted for a small thin-crust cheese pizza pie cut and it was certainly a fantastic pizza. Great cheese pull, well-seasoned with Italian herbs, nice undercarriage, and with a 90's supermodel-thin profile with just the perfect crunch to the crust. 7.5/10. Cheers!

Google
The pizza here has consistently, over the years, always been amazing! The thin crust has great taste crackerish crisp, and the sausage is generous portions and spiced great; not overly fennel tasting like I've had at other places. I highly recommend Suparossa. The 18x24 size is a great deal!

Google
Has been much better in the past. Our pizza looked great but lacked any flavor even with having fresh garlic on it. Never even smelled the garlic. Have been a customer for a very long time but this may have been the end. $10.95 for a kids meal, really!

Google
Not only their thin crust pepperoni pizza are more than good. Their services are examplery fast, organized, prompt, and very friendly service. They are very socialable and treat everybody like family. Simply put it is perfect on all levels in my book.

Google
Ordered for NYE and it was not good. They drowned the wings in red pepper flakes and they were over cooked. Rest of the food was cold. Had I not noticed they forgot food at the pickup window, they would have forgotten half our order. It’s not the first time we’ve had a bad experience either. They’re very disorganized.

Google
After over 2 hours of waiting I received my ice cold pizza and frozen mushrooms and fries that all went into the trash. What a joke this place has become. I learned my first lesson of the year which is to never ever order from this place again. Huge waste of money!

Google
Great food and affordable. I always use them for catering and it goes a long way

Dave Banas

Google
Their pizza recipe is top notch and unchanged. I recently moved to the this area. We used to order their touchdown pizza/ pizzas and sandwiches from their Niles/Central locations back in the 90s-00s from my old job.

Yelp
Their pies are ok except for their sausage. Also I prefer my ingredients under the cheese and they put theirs on top. My main problem was the lady that was doing their takeout was coughing all over the place without a mask or covering her mouth while handing me my pie.

Matthew R.

Yelp
Always perfect. I live near by and they've never let me down. Great food. Big servings and always hot. Ive loved them for years!

Yelp
Suparossa the sister pick up/delivery only restaurant attached to Cucina Biagio. I've only ever had their pizza and some sides and they are always good. They have some of the largest pizzas I've seen. You can order a gigantic 18x24 football pizza. They also have a ton of speciality pizzas like a taco pizza, cheesy beef, lasagna etc Personally I just like a regular old school pepperoni. The pizzas are good and I have them on rotation with two other pizza places. Their sauce is more on the sweet side so it goes well with a spicy pepperoni. The dough is crispy and the pizza isn't overly greasy just enough. Service has always been good. Never had any issues. Ask for specials, they have specials of different days.

Yelp
Sad. Used to be...you know the story. The family has obviously lost interest in both the pizza and the restaurant/banquet hall (Biaggio). They've put money into the suburbs, identical to so many other Chicago Italian and Greek restaurants and really neglected the roots of their success. Prices have gotten out of hand, and I expect the place to close its doors soon. You want the benchmark for good, affordable "Chicago Italian" homestyle cooking, in an authentic atmosphere? Go across the street to DiMaggio's. Or one of the new artisan pizza joints like Forno Rosso or Sapori Napolitano! That's where you'll find the passion and commitment you're looking for.

Yelp
If I could give them 0 stars I would have! I had my sons birthday party and ordered pizza for the party. I received multiple updates (making the pizza, out for delivery), meanwhile nothing was occurring. I called the pizza place and got the pizza 1 hour 45 mins later and no one wanted to take accountability. The pizza place blamed Slice and they blamed them and was told a manager would call me. I never got a call. When I called it was bizarre negotiation and response with again little to no accountability. Awful experience and awful customer service and customer care!

Laura O.

Yelp
We have been ordering here for years. Just picked up thin take out. Really disappointed in scanty ingredients. Cheese sparse, sausage 1 maybe 2 per slice. Felt very light in box like Dominoes dare I say. Never tasted garlic. Nothing like the stretchy cheese bites with juicy ingredients. Too bad because this was our favorite place

Tommy A.

Yelp
There was a fly in my pizza :( Used to order here all the time. But was I was eating and saw a fly melted into the cheese.

Yelp
I have to say that the pizza is a hit or miss, more hits than misses but still misses...when the pizza is on point I'd give it a 10 all day, when they miss I'd still give them a 7 ish plus or minus....my one main complaint comes at the staff area, never extremely rude but rarely are they extremely great either, and idk how many times they need to be told or reminded to update their hours, I have repeatedly attempted to come into the area on a Saturday night to enjoy a great deep dish, which one site saying they are open till 1AM and another at midnight but every time I arrive plenty of time before those hours they are closed, and when I have attempted to call them I get a very rude or ignorant individual(s) who keep giving me different times that they close, pick a time a stick to it for God's sake...how hard is that...those are my only concerns and feedback...

Yelp
We've been going here for years for their pizza special Monday nights. This past Monday, we decided to order some buffalo wings and jalapeno poppers. To my surprise, prices nearly doubled on the 8 piece wings and their pizza special also increased in cost. When I questioned it during pickup, they said their online menu was over a year outdated. Their huge printed board menu that hangs on their wall is the same as their online menu. I ask for an updated menu and they do not have any. So really, it just sounds like false advertisement and they can charge you whatever they want. This left a pretty bad taste in my mouth, and we'll likely take a break from patronizing this restaurant. Food quality: pizza is good as usual. Wings were not. Jalapeno poppers are pretty standard, nothing special.

David A.

Yelp
Like everyone says. "Use to be good". Fell off bad! The takeout staff is rude and ignorant. "Sorry to waste your time!!" I use to order there all the time but then they changed their ingredients and now suck. Now to the staff that said 2 separate times that my pizza wasn't ready. I stood there while the takeout girl played on her phone. Asked again and nothing. Almost hour later she leaves a guy asked what I was waiting for and I tell him my name as he said your pizza has been ready!! Thnx for the cold sh**y pizza. The family and I are done. Go somewhere else. You been warned.

Antonio P.

Yelp
I order food a couple weeks ago and I was very disappointed. I used to order from them a lot in the past, I ended up moving that's why I stopped. I am back in the area so I wanted to try the food again, very bad, I order gnocchi with vodka sauce and they tasted like one of those dollar frozen food from jewel. The pizza was as bad. Not happy.
google avatar

Lauren I.

Yelp
I love every pizza I've ever had here. Their sauce is flavorful without being too strong. And I love the pasta fagioli and stuffed shells.
google avatar

Ann H.

Yelp
The food was delicious, but the 2 gelatos were missing from our order. UPDATE: The delivery person brought the gelatos an hour later and they were totally melted. That's almost $12 down the drain.
google avatar

Mauricio P.

Yelp
So I ordered delivery by calling them up. $18 for spaghetti and meatballs. Figured it was good. But it was average. They forgot my salad and when I called they asked what I wanted to do about it in a tone that was like: it's just a salad. The real parmesan is average grade meat. The bread pudding was dense and the bolognese sauce was little sweet for me. In the end, average food. Dukes and Nottolli are better at parm sandwiches. Just wasnt worth the effort or cost. What did you think I want you to do about an order I paid for and wasn't competently delivered? Wont be going back. Wasted $43 with tip in a parm sandwich, ravioli and bread pudding.

Yelp
Well, I have NOT posted a bad review in months, while trying to support all of our local businesses during the pandemic, but I have waited nearly a full week to get a reply from the owner(s) or general Mgr in regards to the worst pizza ever from here in over decades! Our pizza was burnt, and hard like concrete( stuffed), causing me to chop a tooth, and then it was sorely lacking a decent amount of sausage, green peppers and onions as well!! When I called to voice my disappointment, I was handed off to a person whom I thought was a Mgr, by the name of Nick, who told me he would relay my concerns to the owner , or Gen mgr(female), but alas they never bothered to call! Now, I have to go to my dentist to see about my chipped tooth. Sad that a place that we have patronized forever does not even care, so maybe they do not deserve any more of our hard earned $$!

Marian L.

Yelp
I am a native Chicagoan, living inSoCal, visiting family here in Portage Park. I just experienced the most amazing stuffed pizza! #1 chive from now on!

Yelp
Great gluten free options and I Love their vodka sauce. Glad to have this place in the neighborhood. Many good places are disappearing and it's nice to have another option to order from.

Diana P.

Yelp
Shorted my take out order and refused to refund me for the missing food.
google avatar

Yelp
Love Suparossa and Cucina Bagios! We order take out all the time and have never been disappointed. We go with the Cheese Manicotti and it's delicious as well as their vodka sauce. We went for Mother's Day brunch in May and it was expensive but we all left satisfied, great way to sample all the favorite!

Yelp
I have been ordering from here for about a year now, I order out at least 3 times a week, and I probably tried a little over half of the menu. I gotta say everything they serve is great but their Fried Chicken has to be HANDS DOWN the best in Chicago! I also recommend their "American Pie" pizza (18x24), Great tasting, extremely enjoyable thin crust pizza and for the price which is under $21 bucks You can't beat it anywhere! Other than the food, Suparossa Cucina Biagio's has a wonderful staff of workers who are always courteous, friendly, and exceptional in customer service. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and will definitely remain my go-to restaurant of choice.

Yelp
The pizza here was absolutely delish! I love their thin and crispy bread paired with the half lasagna and half pepperoni and sausage. The lasagna had ricotta cheese and spinach which was oh so good. The other half was classic pepperoni and sausage but it was loaded with both. The delivery took a while which explains the lukewarm cheese but all in all, it was still great. I wished the Crowne Plaza had a micro so that I would've been able to nuke it. I also ordered the 8 piece jumbo buffalo wings which were popping! OMG! These wings almost made you wanna slap yo mama. Notice I said, almost. They fried the wings first which made them extremely crispy and then they doused buffalo wing sauce all over ensuring every bite was met with a kick. Overall, I'd definitely order from here again because the food was quite enjoyable and tasty.

Dionna R.

Yelp
We finally tried this restaurant after driving by it so often. I'm so glad we did. It honestly was the best food I've had in a long time. I had the lasagna with the bolognese sauce and hubby had the Tortellini with Bolognese sauce. My husband is extremely pick about his sauces and this did not disappoint. He and I both called that sauce the best we've ever had. The service was fantastic and they were well versed on everything they had. They knew the menu right off the top of their head. Also...the best Long Island around. Don't forget the warm and toasty bread served on the table with the olive oil and parmesan. I had to stop myself from eating it all before the dinner came. Next time...I'm going to let our waiter choose my dinner just for fun. He really knew his stuff. Also love that the owner was there and very hands on. Love when such care is made to talk to your customers. Ever so impressed.

Yelp
Pizza was good, but delivery guy ripped us off. My father opened the door not realizing I payed already via credit. Gives the guy cash for the delivery "full price + tip", he takes the cash and makes my father sign the credit slip without saying that it's been payed for already! Rip off!

Zee J.

Yelp
The worst! Fishy tasting aftertaste on salmon asked lemon butter, no seasoning just water from mixed veggies $25.00 Baked potato was hard, recook at home
google avatar

Sara R.

Yelp
I really like the thin crust pizza. The crust is not too thick, they put a good amount of cheese, and the sauce has a really good flavor. I was not a fan of the sausage because it was a little heavy on the fennel seed, and I prefer a sausage to be more spicy or garlicky.
google avatar

Jackie M.

Yelp
we have been ordering from this place for years.... recently the pizza price has gone up and the size of the pizza has gone down. a $20 medium pizza was smaller than a frozen pizza from the grocery store. we also ordered a large about a month ago for a party and it was much smaller than what it used to be. wont be ordering from here again, a shame.
google avatar

Dan B.

Yelp
You really can't go wrong here. They have great salads, sides, and of course pizza! Their thin crust is well above the Chicago average (other words, it's freaking good!) and their stuffed has always been amazing. Delivery is fast, and the minimum fee for it is extremely generous.

Yelp
When I asked my wife what she wanted for her Mother's Day dinner, she said pizza. I suggested we order from Suparossa. What a huge mistake! I ordered online and received an e-mail saying my pizza would be ready in one hour and five minutes. I got there right on time and it was a disaster - dozens of people waiting and no system for letting customers know when their order was up. After forty five minutes of waiting in a 36 degree cold rain and numerous attempts to get through on the phone, we were told it would be at least another half hour. We canceled the order. I appreciate that they were open on Mother's Day and probably weren't expecting so many orders, but if you cannot communicate with your customers, you have no business taking orders you cannot reasonably fill.
google avatar

Collin S.

Yelp
My friend Bryan, went here for Mother's Day to surprise his Mom. He had to wait for 4 hours in line for the pizza that they said was ready when he arrived . They did not give him free pizza or a coupon . He won't be going back ever again, 1/10

Yelp
Ordered a plan cheese from Suparossa while visiting family in Chicago last week. Got the 16" XL although you should consider the 18 inch "family" size or the 18" x 24" American if you are hungry because two adults and two kids crushed the XL within minutes and left us wanting for more! I am typically a fan of Chicago-style deep dish however for a thinner crust pizza, this was really good. The crust itself had a great flavor as well with a hint of sweetness. My only complaint is if going here for the first time, Suparossa is hard to find. I was looking for their sign versus the address so I drove past several times not knowing that this particular location was at the back of Cucina Biagio and the sign was small and somewhat hidden. Aside from all that, a great place for a pizza....buon appetito!

Brunella M.

Yelp
I ordered a pasta dish yesterday. It was bake mostaccoli with a side salad. The mostaccoli was not cooked to order because it was mushy and the baked mostaccoli was watery on the bottom with the aluminium container not properly sealed there was sauce leaking. It was as if they took old , precooked mostaccoli slapped some sauce and mozzarella cheese on it, placed it in the oven to bake...but like I said the sauce was to runny... On top of that they forgot to give me the ranch dressing for the salad and parmesan cheese.Definately not worth the $14.00.It safe to say I won't be going there or recommending Suprosa carry out to anyone.

Yelp
Folks, I have to tell you that SP has been a consistent winner over the years. And a real good restaurant in the area. Perhaps I should have written a review earlier but the time is good to tell you now. Great quality everything. They listen to you for custom orders. I love Garlic on everything. Short of showing up in the kitchen and doing this myself they do a darn decent job of accommodating me. Today I had an idea of my favorite pizza prepared two different ways and those folks accommodated me. So great job on customer service. I have had some minor inconsistencies on some orders. I am a stickler for detail. But nothing that I ever needed to have to make a call to the owners about. So I give them a strong 4 out of five for product quality, customer service, and preparation/consistency. Maybe a 5 is soon on the horizon. WP

Yelp
I want to start by saying this restaurant is absolutely beautiful. I was completely in awe of the decor. Similar to the style you would see at Bravo in the Glen. Also, they have comp valet parking, so bring some cash for the tip. Now that I've gotten the ambiance covered, I'll give you a rundown of the food in the order I tried it: -Bloody Mary: Most likely Mr. & Mrs. T's, and it was oh so strong. Loved that I could have one, and be happy as a clam -Minestrone: More like a vegetable soup. Lacked flavor, but I enjoyed that it had northern beans (or maybe navy beans) -Caesar salad: Drenched in a wonderfully creamy dressing. I feel like the trend has been more toward citrus and light Caesar dressings. It was nice to have a thicker dressing for the first time in a while -Margherita pizza: The pizza was fair. They advertise Wood Fired Neapolitan pizza. For you pizza connoisseurs, it isn't true Neapolitan. This pizza has more of a cracker style thin crust. They used a cheese blend (not buffalo mozzarella) and it had tomato slices on it. If you want to give true Neapolitan style a try, hit up Forno Rosso which is right down the street. This Neapolitan style of pizza isn't for everyone, but ooey, gooey true Neapolitan is my absolute favorite. Overall, fine experience. They overcharged us for the pizza, so watch your checks. They advertised it costing $12, which was an okay deal. In reality, they charged $16. The food was super filling, so one pizza can be easily shared by two people.

Yelp
Been coming here for a while. Place is great but these onion rings taste a little fishy

Yelp
My friends and I have eaten here before, usually carry out, and was always pretty good. This time we ordered chicken fettuccini alfredo, cheese lasagna with meat sauce, lasagna with meat sauce, and cheese ravioli with meat sauce. All were pretty good. My favorite is the fettuccini alfredo, excellent sauce, could have used more of it. Cheese ravioli was also delicious. Meat sauce was more meat, less sauce. Will try other sauces for next time. The entrees come with soup or salad. And they have the best cream potato soup, so good. The place is connected with a restaurant. We usually go on Fridays and they always had a live band. Last carry out we were serenaded by the host. He was awesome.
google avatar

Hanna B.

Yelp
Usually order from here as the thin crust is usually good. Today order a regular pan pizza as we were craving more bread. What we got was a deep dish with hard crust bread. Ordered 2 salads - we got no salads. It was delivery, they put everything in bags so we didn't check for the salads before we were just too kind by giving the driver $10 dollar tip. Called and asked about the pan pizza and told her that pan pizza is not what you delivered, that crap was a deep dish. The response I got was, "thats what we call our deep dish". poor service so moving on. I just wish that Caponies who serves a great pan pizza (a real pan) was opened during the day. ARGH.. looking for a new pizza place that serves a real pan pizza.. ... :-(
google avatar

Kishma H.

Yelp
Ordered lunch medium pizza (SOB) sausage, red onion, bacon, & I added mushrooms.. Pizza was great delivery was fast the only thing that irritated me was they forgot my parmesan, hot peppers, and crushed red peppers. I called back and the lady who answered was a doll she got someone to come back and drop the condiments off!!! I'll most definitely order from here again
google avatar

Christian S.

Yelp
I like this pizza! Nice flavor on the crust, yes, it has flavor! And is crisp with a little chew. Great fresh topping a and good sauce! Gotta try this one!!

Lily T.

Yelp
If you like to get good Italian pizza, this is the place to go... can't wait to go back. Nothing like a great pizza

Nick A.

Yelp
We ordered delivery from Suparossa the other night and it was delicious! We had 2 orders of baked clams, garlic bread, rigatoni gorgonzola with shrimp and eggplant parmesan which was admittedly too much food for two people but we had great leftovers the next day. The clams and garlic bread were our favorite. They give you a whole loaf of garlic bread and the sauce on the clams is perfect for dunking the bread in. The gorgonzola pasta was also delicious - kind of like an alfredo sauce but with gorgonzola added. It was very rich and there was a lot of it so it is plenty for 2 people. My eggplant parm was really good and came with some pasta in marinara sauce . I will totally order that again. Overall a great meal!
google avatar

Nadine B.

Yelp
Great thin-crust pizza. The cheese is so salty and chewy and delicious! Very happy with them everytime. The Suparossa a few miles away on Central has TERRIBLE pizza. Avoid them and avoid the confusion!

Yelp
We've been living in our new neighborhood for 6-7 months now and I still haven't found a good pizza delivery joint. I mean I did find one but the last couple times I ordered they changed their pizza crust and sauce and it's so not worth it anymore. Back to the drawing board. I was near the HIP and figured I could just pick up pizza on the way home. I noticed Cucina Biagio's has the Suparossa signage now and a random yelp review I read said that the pizza at this location is much better than the Portage Park Suparossa location. I was intrigued. So I ordered for pick up. Ordering by phone was a breeze, the lady was friendly on the phone and in person. They were spot on with the time quoted as well. I like how the pick-up area is separate from the restaurant because the restaurant looked really nice and I definitely would have been slumming it in my mommy uniform (sans make up, ponytail and leggings--not ashamed to admit it at all). The pizza smelled so good that my son asked for a piece to eat on the way home. Yep--I'm that kind of mom too. I helped myself to a piece as well and it was freakin delicious. Thin crust, sausage and mushroom. The ingredients were fresh and the sauce was a nice slightly tangy tomato sauce. My beef with my once favorite pizza joint was that the thin crust got too thin--almost like a cracker; not this pizza, it was thin but still held those ingredients well. I also ordered their fried calamari which I just found OK. A little too soft and the breading didn't seemed fried enough. My husband agreed that this was def better then the more local pizza places we've tried, I'm just sad that we're a bit outside of their delivery area. Insert sad trombone here.
google avatar

Charlotte T.

Yelp
All fresh ingredients, top notch pizza. P.S dont order from the suparossa location on Central ave. It's totally different
google avatar

Hersh A.

Yelp
This place is Cucina Biagio and they serve Suparossa stuffed pizza here. Love that pizza. I had a cheese w/ garlic and Italian sausage pizza. It was delicious. It was baked to a perfect texture. The pizza sauce was aplenty which I prefer it that way. The sauce had a bit of a kick if you will and it tasted good. My only issue w/ the pizza was the size and thickness compared to its price. We ordered a 14" (x-large) and it looked like a medium sized pizza. It felt barely enough for three proper pizza consuming adults. I even checked with our server and he confirmed that it was 14" pizza. But anyway, I would definitely recommend trying this pizza. It's worth it. Service was good. The ambiance was nice. It's a family restaurant with nice decor and setting. Next time I'll go for the pasta.

Yelp
My thanks to ROSE for the fantastic food & service provided by your restaurant. The amount of food that was given was unbelievable. I would not hesitate to use ur services again.

Yelp
Now I'm not too sure why there are two entries for this place in yelp, but I'll review in this one because I dined in the ristorante last night. I've ordered pizza from here several times, and while not my favorite pizza in the area, I do like the food. My short review: Good food, big portions, awesome bread, great friendly service, reasonable prices, pasta pasta pasta! Full review: I went with my fiance on a Monday night. Staff was very friendly and attentive but not over bearing at all. The bread they serve is oh so good. warm and soft in the center, crispy on the outside. Accompanied with a serving dish of oil, cheese, and olives...it's a great start to any meal in my book. I opted out of drinks, but my fiance had the house Shiraz, which she said was good. We skipped appetizers, and settled for salad and pasta. Salad was typical. I enjoyed mine with a garlic dressing that was tasty, but not over garlicky. Next came pasta. Going with my fiance's suggestion, I got the Square Pasta with pomodoro sauce topped with fresh roccetta cheese. Behind it's obvious name, it's actually nothing more than a fabulous deconstructed lasagna. Fresh tomato's, great cheese, well cooked pasta. Recommend and reorder? Absolutely! My future better half opted for the Tortellini and sausage in a spinach butter/oil/broth sauce. She thought it was just ok and ended up convincing me to switch mid way through our meal. I'm glad she did, because I got to eat two very well made pasta dishes. I have never had that combination before and it struck me a new and exciting pasta dish that I would like to try out at home. The sausage was sliced, the spinach was chopped and I am looking forward to eating the leftovers tonight. Did I mention the servings are very generous? Well they are and that makes me happy! Recommend and reorder? You bet ya!

Yelp
Horrible pizza. Haven't ordered from there in over a few years and I now remember why. No sauce on pizza and very bland tasting. Got the wise guy and I wish hadn't. No sauce and very doughy and basically tasted like nothing. Trash pizza

Yelp
First time ordering delivery from here and we are definitely going to order again. Calamari was fresh and perfectly fried. We ordered thin crust and crust was crispy and perfect.

Yelp
We order a pizza and potato skins. It was delicious and the delivery was very quick. I was impressed with their level of service and how quick they arrived.
