Am I a Jerk if I Cash In My Restaurant Gift Cards? | Eater SF

"I saw that Super Duper Burger, the popular burger mini-chain in the Back of the House group, saw a big bump in gift-card business—selling 148 percent more gift cards from March to August than the same period last year and almost doubling holiday sales—and positions itself as fast-food-style 100% all-natural burgers with shakes and cones made with organic Straus Family Creamery dairy, homemade pickles, and more." - Becky Duffett

Google
I ordered the spicy chicken and a side of gyoza. The gyoza were well cooked with crispy edges, serving side was good and plenty of sauce for dipping! The teriyaki was very spicy but well flavored. I ordered a 5 out of 6 levels of spiciness. Service was good and I didn't have to wait long. Call ahead if you don't want to wait. The phone was ringing off the hook! I forgot to get the complimentary soup. Something to try when i go back.

Google
We saw this place on tik tok and decided to get the chicken teriyaki and katsu and the short ribs and katsu and it was one of the best teriyaki we’ve had in a while!(we also got the yakisoba but I would pass next time) but Definitely recommending this place if your looking for good katsu, chicken teriyaki, short ribs even the mac salad and cabbage salad were amazing

Google
Has been here over 20+ years. Two owners. Take out only option, but has several tables to use for eating food. No door dash or Uber eats delivery available. Small kitchen so want to keep it local neighbor for most part. Food ok, for a quick-n-pickup, nothing special. Mostly targeted for college crowd, easy quick-dinner.

Google
Best chicken katsu I have ever had. Their katsu sauce is the perfect sweetness that I have been looking for without it being too sour/tangy. I had the short rib with it— grilled perfectly, but the only problem I had was that it wasn’t marinated. Instead they gave a sauce on the side and I drizzled it on. Favorite teriyaki spot in WA so far!

Robin L.

Google
We went because it was recommended as a hole in the wall type of place. It for sure is a hole in the wall no nonsense kind of place. Our orders were taken quickly and they seemed very busy with take out orders. There are a few tables and the atmosphere is exactly what you would expect. The food was fine. We only had chicken teriyaki so I can only speak to that. The portion was fine for the price but not special. No complaints at all. It was chicken teriyaki prepared in a reasonable amount of time for a reasonable price.

I had been by here on a lark during the pandemic a few years ago. There were a bunch of college age kids outside waiting and I wasn't exactly sure what to do. I went in and was instantly greeted by an old Asian man who yelled at me to get out. I always love the hole in the wall place where horrible service is no match for the delicious food they serve. I felt like I was in a Seinfeld episode. Ok, now what? After learning the protocol on ordering I was able to place my order and received a delicious plate of teriyaki. Only later did I realize that besides the teriyaki the katsu was the real star at this joint. Fast forward to this week and I was passing by again and decided to stop in. I was determined to get the katsu this time. My experience was very different. Friendly guy from SoCal greeted me and took my order. Complimentary miso was a nice touch. Received my food and it was delicious but I must admit that I missed the old experience. Not the best ever teriyaki but definitely better than average. Katsu was nice and crisp and the sauce is very unique. Price is a little steep, but I would still recommend it to any friend in the area. Note the tiny amount of sauce in the ramekin. I'm not sure if it was for the gyoza or the teriyaki but the amount was not worth the plastic used to contain it. C'mon man.

Maryanna F.

Google
Super Duper is BY FAR the BEST teriyaki place in Bellingham. They got the Mac salad perfect. Chicken perfect. Katsu is crispy but not oily. I got the #3 and have been truly blessed. And a cup of miso while you wait? So awesome and will be the only place I go to for teriyaki from now on. 🤩

Google
Your typical Hole-in-the-wall cult following Korean couple owned restaurant. Don't come here to expect quality customer service. Food: Been here twice and ordered the #5 ~$17 (Chicken Katsu + Korean Spared Ribs entre, more expensive end item) twice; things tasted the same both times. unique Katsu sauce, nicely grilled ribs (slight dryer side), comes with two soy based sauce and packaged sweet and sour sauce. Big proportion, perfect for their Bham Western WA locals. Customer Service: Don't expect it, this is not a Karen friendly place and the food sells itself. They get large volume of orders and calls, and if you call just tell him what you want, and he'll immediately hang up the phone on you. The owner sometimes stops taking order before 7pm, so make sure to go there early. Interior is ight, just go down to Fairhaven if you want a nicer view. Tip: Know your menu items well and call ahead. Don't be sad if the owner with broken English hangs up immediately after you order without saying an extra word. #Efficiency Food receiving expectations: 15-25 mins wait and the owner coming outside pointing and yelling your item# at you. He somehow knows and remembers everyone's order. They take their COVID-19 situation seriously, so be respectful and wear a mask :)

Yelp
Veey tasty Japanese food. Big portion size and lots of flavor and variety. Highly recommend if in the area looking for a quick take out option.

Yelp
Always amazing. I don't know how they make the tofu so flavorful and crispy but I've never had better tofu from anywhere the katsu sauce is addicting, we always leave with a bottle to take home. It's a small spot so best to take it out to eat, but they do have a small counter to sit at. They're usually really fast and efficient, but we call ahead since ybs pace is small.

Yelp
I was craving Katsu and some Mac salad (the real ish, not the ghetto store tasteless stuff) and usually we would eat around Tacoma or Everett area but we had an appointment so decided to try this place out. I'm glad that we did. I'm just confused why so much hate towards the owner? The guy is super chill and friendly. Never was he a prick and he smiled never yelled at any other customers that were inside the establishment. Maybe his prices went up but hasn't everything? It's called inflation and there's costs to everything. Also the comments about him charging minimum for his card machine, well as a fellow business owner, sorry to burst your bubble but we get charged fees and percentages each transaction, even next door at the Convienence store, they also have a limit spend for any card transactions as well. We ordered 2 X HOUSE SPECIAL #3 which came with eggroll and got a, free miso and a side salad and we also ordered extra side of Large Mac For the price of the food and taste, it's so worth it. Better than that ghetto HAWAIIAN SUN fake restaurant and imitation teriyaki spots in the Bellingham vicinity, I suggest go check this place out and order a combo but you must get the cutlet!!! and you won't be disappointed! Thanks John for the good grub and great service, and see you soon! LOL

Yelp
Chicken katsu and the chicken fried rice are both amazing. We will definitely be back again. Also their miso soup is some of the best I've had.

Yelp
We came here at 3:00 PM on Saturday. We have loved Super Duper Teriyaki for years, specifically for their katsu sauce. It is so good. We were delighted to learn that they sold bottles of it to go! The only reason we didn't buy a medium size bottle of it was because they were sold out. We ordered their chicken katsu and ate the whole thing (between two people) comfortably. We didn't let a drop of that magical sauce go to waste, and we love that they offer miso soup to sip on while you wait for their food. We love the improvements they have made inside their restaurant. It was comfortable sitting inside and grabbing our quick bite. They have glowed up their decorations, and we notice that they are selling candies to support local schools. We can't come back soon enough.

Yelp
This place was so so good. The inside of the restaurant was a bit small, but the food was absolutely delicious and a great portion. We each got a combination platter that came with rice, gyoza, an egg roll, miso soup, coleslaw, teriyaki chicken, and Chicken Katsu. The Katsu was amazing, perfectly crunchy and soft with delicious sauce. The server was kind and helpful as well. Highly recommend!!

Ian C.

Yelp
A lunch special used to be like 15$ out the door with a drink, now it's 22$ and the food quality isn't what it used to be. I really like the new owner, just bummed he has to have his prices so high to pay his bills. Would highly recommend buying their sauce and making your own.

Yelp
For about ten years we've stopped by SDT primarily to order Katzu chicken. The sauce is the thing. Apparently SDT's katsu sauce is well known throughout Bellingham, and for good reason. It is very tasty. We also like the teriyaki. It used to be very hard to order take out ahead of time; the owners were swamped and often the phone wouldn't take more messages. But the food was great, substantial portions and reasonable prices. A couple years ago SDT's owners retired and a new owner came in.Things got more organized quickly, and basic renovations made things more pleasant. It's possible now to place a phone order, quite efficiently. There were some other less positive changes. It used to be that it was possible to get additional sauce by using the squeeze bottles on the side, and we did that every visit. Now that possibility is gone. If you want more sauce you're given a very small container. I asked about this and the new owner said that people were filling whole soup bowls with teriyaki or katsu. They now sell katsu as well, in a squeeze bottle. We paid $55 for three orders of katsu, which is a lot but again the servings are large. At that price, however, I would hope that SDT wouldn't begrudge their customers as much sauce as they'd like.

Yelp
My friends at WWU hyped this place up for me and I was not let down. The sauce they absolutely douse their katsu with... I don't think I've ever had anything like it from a katsu place I've been to, and although it is fairly straightforward of a flavor and surprisingly sweet, it was very tasty. Probably not especially healthy, but I didn't care. Big, solid portion size. New ownership seemed reasonably nice and had interesting things to say about how they came to take over from its notoriously (from what I heard) testy original owner. Just a cool spot with good food. Although, their KBBQ options - I got their kalbi as part of the katsu combo on my first visit - kinda bad. Just very dry, not an especially delicious marinade... I'd rather just have the full serving of katsu. But yeah, if I lived up in Bellingham I'd probably be getting it all the time. Good stuff.

Yelp
I came here solely based on the high reviews but was left disappointed. It was good, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't great. Especially with the raving reviews it didn't live up to what I was expecting. The amount of Food you get for the price is a lot! They were out of salad when we went in so unsure if they replaced the lack of salad with extra rice/chicken. I'd like to think they did because the price wasn't reduced. Regardless, it was a LOT of food with a great price! Egg rolls and dumplings were my favorite! The fried rice just seemed like white rice with veggies in it. I would've appreciated more teriyaki sauce too. The katsu sauce tasted too much like mayonnaise. Wasn't too fond of it. The spicy chicken teriyaki with 3 stars spicy was not spicy at all. I guess I have to try 5 stars to try some spice next time. I'd go back to try other dishes but the teriyaki chicken and Katsu weren't my favorites this time around.

Yelp
The chicken katsu and crab rangoons are amazing, and so is the Mac salad (that's coming from someone who usually wants nothing to do with macaroni salad). Love the quaint vibe of this restaurant, as well as their interesting selection of drinks. Service is always great they are quick even with a line of people waiting and always make sure your order is correct. Thanks to all of you!
google avatar

Yelp
What a Supa Dupa place! Granted it looks like a pawn shop from the outside - in true SoCal Sublime tradition, but inside, so kitschy and kool! But, it is the food and the people that make this place outstanding. I always judge Japanese by their katsu and Hawaiian by their slaw - this place is stellar. The fries, the legit Hawaiian soda, the well cooked rice, even the yakisoba is lit! Outdoor seating is limited, and the wait can be long, but totally worth it! Wish they didn't use styrofoam.

Yelp
Sooo sooo good!!! Although I didn't see burgers on the menu so don't be surprised haha. Their food was amazing! I got the chicken Katsu and it was so tasty! It was a great size portion that I had left overs! If you eat at the restaurant you can serve yourself complimentary miso soup too which was great! Overall you won't be disappointed with what you order. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone and would come again. The prices are great and the restaurant is fairly small so getting it to go wouldn't be a problem either if there were no more seats to sit in.

Malea M.

Yelp
Easy to say the food (especially the chicken katsu) here is one of the best you will ever try, but the customer service is outstanding and genuine. If you're looking for a satisfying lunch/dinner with a high quality experience, this is the place to go!

Elena K.

Yelp
Addicting . I get the house special #3 which is the teriyaki and katsu combo. The guava iced tea is also phenomenal. I lived right next to this place last year and got it at least once a week. There's also complimentary miso soup. The owners are super nice and one of them even remembers me every time I go in which is always nice. They have really stepped up their decorations since the first time I ate here. Each time I go it's cuter and filled with more plants and crystals. I love it. Would literally donate plasma just to afford to get it once a week as a college student.

Lauren W.

Yelp
Local katsu hotspot. New owners do the original recipe from my youth justice. Go here and get the katsu and some free soup you'll love it.

Ken L.

Yelp
The other 4 people liked their food, but my pork teriyaki was disgusting, and seemed boiled with mushy overcooked veggies. When I called the manager, he did not seem to be too concerned with my displeasure. This is the first negative review I have ever given, but don't waste your time with this place if you want pork teriyaki or a manager who values customer satisfaction.
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
went there for my first time today, not so good. staff was very nice. that gives a star. Got the short ribs, the ribs were so-so. Everything else that came with it was underwhelming. Eggroll was very soggy with little flavor. There was some kind of a fried chicken thing that was I could not eat -- the sauce they poured on it tasted turned/spoiled. The chicken was maybe 1 mm thick, over cooked, and also very hard to eat (it would have made me sick). Got a drink that was $7.50, overly sweetened and loaded with coconut (thai coffee????) Ended up being about $40 and most of it ended up in the trash. :(
google avatar

Francine L.

Yelp
I ordered a chicken katsu and it seriously is the best chicken katsu I have ever had. The sauce on top is to die for! Make sure you ask for the salad if your order comes with one, we have had to ask both times we have been! People say that the owner is very rude, but I went in on a monday at lunch time and he was pleasant. Maybe try to catch him when its not busy? Again, best chicken katsu I have had!
google avatar

Kailey O.

Yelp
The best hands down! Newer owners have the place looking soooo cute! They're adding stuff without taking away with what worked before! The katsu is simply worth the hour drive round trip for us!
google avatar

Jenn A.

Yelp
I don't understand the hype. The food was okay. When I went the owner was very rude and half of the food was out.

Jamerson C.

Yelp
If you think you'll be calling in to order while classes at the university are in session, you're wrong. You will have to drive to an order from the store. The food is good, it's not 5 star Gordon Ramsay, it's good university student food. They get a lot of business from the college kids and surrounding residents. They also usually close 30 minutes early if they have orders that will push them up to closing time.
google avatar

Ema A.

Yelp
it's okay. i ordered a chicken teriyaki. i've definitely had better but this was okay. side salad options were macaroni salad or coleslaw. i got the macaroni. weird to have as a side but it was okay.
google avatar

Terri S.

Yelp
I'd give them five stars but they don't answer the phone. You have to go and place your order and wait, but it's worth it. Take something to entertain yourself, because there will be a wait. It's not because they are slow, it's because they are usually busy. The portions are large and everything we've ordered has been super tasty.
google avatar

Kimi H.

Yelp
New owners. Maybe other family members took over. The phone is never answered still. The Kalbi is ok. They still are pretty weak as far as customer service goes. Giant serving. A combo is enough for two. They have a Hawaiian drink that I want to try next time.
google avatar

Lauren A.

Yelp
I have driven past Super Duper Teriyaki a dozen times and I'm glad I finally stopped to try it. This is a very small operation, and they get busy, so be patient while you are waiting for your order, they aren't very fast but the food is well worth the wait. Great portions for a good price. I had the Tofu and Rice, very fresh and super yummy. The man dealing with the diners isn't very friendly, he is all business and very serious, I'm fine with that, my meal was excellent and I'll soon be returning. Super Duper Teriyaki will be a regular stop for me when I am in the Fairhaven area.

Amalie F.

Yelp
Food: 12/10 Loved the interior and miso soup pot Chicken teriyaki and rolls and gyoza were super good

Axel S.

Yelp
Food made me zesty ass great staff especially the little boy John so kind to give me secret sauce
google avatar

Garrett G.

Yelp
This is the greatest restaurant in bellingham, and the best teriyaki in the entire universe. Count yourself lucky if they answer the phone, and BE READY TO ORDER. there's no playing around here. Just amazing food at a good price. The chicken teriyaki is the best I've ever had but the chicken katsu has metaphorically talked me down from The Ledge on many occasions. You will not regret this meal.

Adri A.

Yelp
The food was great, but the man who took our order was very unprofessional and made us uncomfortable. He asked for my friends number and while we were eating he texted and called her. He didn't need the number for her order. It made us very uncomfortable.
google avatar

Cole T.

Yelp
Best chicken katsu In town! This is a bellingham staple. You won't be disappointed. Great food for a great price Ann's you definitely won't leave hungry.

Zelda R.

Yelp
Amazing food! I got a chicken yakisoba and my boyfriend got beef terriaki. I loved how tasty it was and the Hawaiian mac and cheese salad was great! Will be coming here again!
google avatar

Carl L.

Yelp
Recently went to Super Duper during a trip, this place is insanely good. Like some others have noted, Chicken Katsu is an absolute must. Of all the items ordered by my companions and I, it seemed the #3 was the best, a good variety of items, and it had the Kastu in it. You get quite a bit of food, enough for leftovers for another day, or perhaps two could even share a single meal. The way the orders are dispersed doesn't really make sense, instead of giving you a number or taking your name, they just say whatever number of meal is ready. This creates some problems when a bunch of people ordered the #3, as about 5 people walk up at a time thinking their food is ready and have to figure out who ordered first. So that's a bit of a trip. But overall the food is fantastic with very good places. Overall- awesome place to go
google avatar

Rex D.

Yelp
Moved near this out of the way place. You can see that they get most of their business from to-go orders. I've been here twice, and both were a good experience. They have (free) Hot Miso soup for the customers to sip on while waiting for their good. The really nice thing to do for your customers when it's cold out. I've seen the line to order go out the door, so this place does have a following. The funny thing is, they no longer make burgers! Only Chinese dishes. The owner said it takes too long to make burgers. They make great Chinese food, so why not! I did try the Katsu, and it was really good. This time I tried the Kung Pow chicken to go. They do give you a lot of rice along with what you order. Got the Kung Pow chicken, rice, spring roll, 2 pot stickers, and a salad. It was fresh and the Kung Pow chicken was candied. A different way of making it from the way I have had it before. All of it was good, and worth another trip when in the mood for chinese. Even though this place is out of the way, you should give it a try. They really do have great, fresh Chinese dishes.

Samuel P.

Yelp
This is hands down some of the best teriyaki I've ever had in my life. The sauce is the perfect blend of sweet and tangy, and the portions are huge. Also, the katsu chicken is phenomenal. The only downside is the wait, but I've always felt like it was worth it, even the time I waited around for an hour. I'd like to add that the owner isn't going to tolerate any nonsense. He's all business and is straight to the point. Don't take too long. Know what you want. Order. Pay. Be patient and respectful. This guy has mind-blowing teriyaki, and he doesnt need to take your shit.

Yelp
Run down looking restaurant which is located on exit 252. At the first glance I noticed Super Duper is owned by Korean lady. I found it odd that SD both sells burgers and teriyaki according to the name. Oh well. The price is good, inexpensive and portion is definetely filling. I got Chicken Teriyaki(lunch special) for $5.99 which comes with meat, rice, salad and Miso soup. My buddy P and I were hungry after border shopping and SD was perfect for cheap eats. Salad was fresh and crispy. However meat was so dry. They were mixed with dry and okay ones. I didn't finish eating chicken in the end. This resto is self-serve and you pre-pay after ordering. I felt clueless about tipping while waiting for food. All these positive reviews were disappointing. Just cheap satisfying food to filll tummy. Salad dressing and sauce were definetely yummy. I didn't find it "Super Duper" amazing, sorry.

Rachel K.

Yelp
The best teriyaki in town!! And to be honest, the best chicken katsu I've ever had. This place knows how to do it and does it right. I'm a Seattle native so I'm familiar with good teriyaki and this place is in my top 3 favorite places ever! I always get the house special #3 and it never ever disappoints.
google avatar

Christin R.

Yelp
It's all about that Super Duper katsu sauce. I get the Combo #5 which is the chicken katsu and short ribs and it also comes with salad, an egg roll and 2 gyoza. They have complementary miso soup by the counter which is nice cause the wait can sometimes be long....I definitely recommend calling in ahead of time! I wanted to give Super Duper 5 stars cause it's really good but my experience didn't deserve the 5 stars. The service is not the best and the workers sometimes come off as rude.
google avatar

Paden M.

Yelp
The Katsu is great value and tastes amazing. No frills, no bs. Super duper is awesome.

Kenna M.

Yelp
went in super close to closing and they were very nice! chicken katsu was great and i loved the music they were playing
google avatar

Kath P.

Yelp
If you have heard about long-time fixture, Super Duper Teriyaki, then you have probably heard about their infamous "#3". This is the menu number for the delicious chicken teriyaki, chicken katsu, eggroll and gyoza. We had take-out which was ready promptly, and enjoyed the huge portions at home. The chicken was plump and grilled in a light teriyaki sauce, but the star of the show was the katsu. Breaded and drizzled with a flavorful katsu sauce, it was comfort food to the max. The katsu was a tad dry, as was the gyoza, but I totally overlooked that as I dug in to feast. The eggroll was really nice with veggies inside. It was all laying on a bed of rice and a small green salad on the side with a sweet japanese type dressing. For those times you are looking for basic comfort, and craving your carbs, this is my recommendation. We all have those days when we need a little Super Duper.
google avatar

Brittany T.

Yelp
Best teriyaki in town hands down. The chicken katsu is the best thing I've ever eaten in my life. Me and my bf always joke it has crack in it because it's so good. Not that great as leftovers, but how often does that happen with super duper? You just eat it all and have a terrible stomachache later. Also the guy that works there is just great. He literally don't give no f***'s. You call and order a special number 2 and just hangs up on you. Half the time he doesn't even answer it. That's how you know it's good, when customer service and atmosphere doesn't even matter.
google avatar

Emme P.

Yelp
Thank god for restaurants like this in bham. Good food at a decent price, no frills. For those that complain about lack of service/unfriendliness, then they've probably never been across the border and eaten in Richmond. The owner is like Mr. Rogers compared to the servers up there. I don't care how friendly and great the service is, I go to a restaurant to eat and I don't care for small talk either when I'm hangry. Chicken katsu, Korean bbq ribs, white rice, salad, and tonnnsss of that secret sauce plz.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
The chicken Katsu was FANTASTIC! Scold away, dear owner, just keep the food quality as high as it is now!
google avatar

Xichen J.

Yelp
This hole-in-the-wall establishment at the corner of 21st and Harris offers some of the best chicken katsu in the Pacific Northwest. The sauce is absolutely spot on. There is not much of a parking lot in front of this store but usually there is ample street parking available. The inside is unadorned and almost borderline dirty. Therefore, I recommend getting carryout and enjoying the food in the comforts of one's own home.

A S.

Yelp
Phenomenal staff and phenomenal food. Absolutely love this place, just gotta limit myself so I don't get fat. Get the Katsu!!
google avatar

Lizzie S.

Yelp
I seriously crave this place all the time! It's my favorite place to get teriyaki. It's also wonderful to support a local restaurant.
google avatar

Sabrina V.

Yelp
I go here quite often! And I always get the number 3 which is a combination of chicken teriyaki and katsu with rice, 2 gyoza, and 2 egg rolls. The chicken katsu is the absolute best and definitely most popular dish due to the sauce that comes with it. It's crazy good! It's consistently busy and you can call in to order ahead but they don't answer their phone due to them being so busy. It's very rare when they do answer. People who work there are not at all interactive or necessarily friendly but they are quick to take your order and make great food so the customer service experience doesn't matter too much! It's a great place!

Yelp
We just finished our meal (takeout order). Heard everyone raving about the Chicken Katsu and holy cow was it the best tasting Katsu in town! I'm not exaggerating either. We got the House Combo #5 but they ran out of riblets so we opted for beef. The chicken was really good and tender, but I think the star of the show was the Katsu sauce! It came with some rice and a salad as well. The salad dressing goes really well with the Katsu sauce. Beef was yummy and tender. Overall, tasted awesome and good portions. Highly recommended.
