Where to Eat and Drink Cheaply Around McGill University - Eater Montreal

"It’s nothing more than a sandwich counter in a basement depanneur, but Super Sandwich has saved many a broke student: sandwiches start in the two dollar range, and are whipped up in less than 30 seconds on a warm baguette with lettuce, tomato, mustard, and mayo." - Tim Forster, Daniel Bromberg

The Best Lunch Options in Downtown Montreal - Eater Montreal

"A hidden gem for McGill students, Super Sandwich churns out deli sandwiches at light speed from an unlikely dépanneur beneath a condo building. The chicken salad is at the expensive end of a dirt cheap menu, and with creamy, herby goodness on a warm mini-baguette, you'll power through the workday." - Tim Forster, Mallory Frayn, Ashley Joseph

O.G. under 5$ footlong. Many varieties. Ham and cheese is legit. Double up on the meat for extra if your hunger is extra. This place has been serving sandwiches to university kids for atleast 5 years and prices have barely changed. Best value in the area. Is also a depanneur with the essentials. If youre hungry with 4 bucks and a dream this is your spot.

If u haven’t tried this one, you’re défini missing out!! I got roasted beef with extra egg salad for only 5.25 tax included! And it’s super tasty and service is nice, I didn’t even prepared my money then the sandwich is already made , so fast!!!

Super Sandwich offers delicious and quick sandwiches at an incredible value: Only around 4 to 5 dollars! Sandwiches are freshly made, but are ready in only around 20 sec - by the time you finish paying, it is almost done. They offer roughly 15-20 types of sandwiches. It's a rarity to find such cheap and high quality sandwiches today - perfect for a quick bite. The store is somewhat hard to find. It is located inside of a small convenience store in a small mall-like building, with other businesses beside it.

Google
Super affordable and tasty sandwich! Simple deli meat, lettuce, tomato, and your choice of mayo, mustard, and/or siracha. The bread is kept warm, and the sandwich comes to you about 30 seconds after you order, toasty and fresh. Most sandwiches are now $3-$5, depending on the protein and the addition of cheese. I hope the reopen soon!!

Staying at Best Western across the street, my husband stumbled upon this place by chance. What a gem! Egg salad was amazing! Bread was still warm! $8.75 for 2 of us to have a filling and delicious lunch. We will be back. Keep up the good work! 😁🎉

Google
I usually go there about once a week. This place has the best deal for a sandwich in Montreal! They heat up the bread so it's nice and soft on the inside with a nice crust. And they make them super fast. I'm a huge fan of the egg salad. The owners are also super friendly.

Google
One of the cheapest places to get your belly full. I literally lived off of their egg salad and chicken salad sandwiches as an undergrad. Great service and everyone is super nice. They make the sandwiches at world record speed! By the time I count out my cash, the sandwich is already bagged and ready to go. Highly recommend this place as a cheap eat near McGill!

Google
Really lovely store — the employees are friendly & service is super fast. I got the smoked chicken sandwich which was tasty and warm. It came with lettuce and tomatoes, also they offer the choice between mayo & mustard. I’d definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a quick, affordable lunch. Total was $3.95 after tax.

Yelp
How in the Yelposphere, have I not reviewed this not-so-hidden-anymore-gem of a bahn mi style sandwich making power house already or at least since the P-word. Not only have I at one time or another tried every sandwich they make (were 15 when I had completed my own personal challenge year's ago); all clearly listed on a sign behind the counter. This family run business is super efficient - and that pun was intended. You see, they are a sandwiches throw away from the McGIll University campus, so even though they are located on the "semi-basement" level, they can get quite a crowd - but their experience and efficiency keeps the queue moving. In said queue, you can find students (obviously), locals and those in the know, former students or both like me. Of course anyone is welcome to try and discover this 'find'. You see, this sandwich shop is a also a depanneur, but the real convenience is being able to grab a fairly priced - about a foot long - sandwich in mere minutes - and they taste good too. I usually go for their egg salad, mock crab salad or sometimes splurge on their Brie with pickled vegetables. They have a full variety, but these days I am focused on eating much less meat, so thus the three choices I pointed out. Be aware they can run out of certain fillings because of what's ordered more of on which particular day - and they close on time because of the long days they put in. I don't blame them one bit, kudos to them, especially for doing it all these years. I won't date myself; but all these years can give you a hint it's not one or two. I hope the brother, sister and Mom (plus staff) keep it up, especially these days as it's hard to find a good value. Since we all need to eat; you can thank me later. Wink! Note: I imagine you realize for plus or minus $5 you should not expect a gourmet sandwich, for the quality, value, freshness and speed they are a solid 5 stars. Again do not expect a $10-15 sandwich experience.

Yelp
Don't get me wrong, it's a great value at 5-something w bahn mi style french bread. I'd just bring a bit of my own filling to spruce up the inside. Will likely try again cause they sold out of the schiracha crab. That's worth a 2nd visit.

Yelp
bussinnn!! their chicken salad is my bestie and I's go to favourites! Friendly staff and generally good food!

Yelp
I don't know what crawled up Liz's butt, but this place is incredible (even as an adult with money, la dee da). Saved my life many times in undergrad, and continues to be a go-to when I need a fast, reasonable healthy lunch!

Yelp
Probably one of the best deals in town for a large sandwich! For $3.75 (incl tax), you can get a beef salami sandwich on a ~10 inch roll. (Remark: They have many options beyond this but the beef salami option is my personal favourite.) Nothing fancy, but it tastes good and - after a week or two - you'll have saved enough to treat yourself somewhere high end if you want ;-) You can also add a drink and bag of chips at a good price too and there are other convenience store items at the store too. A bit bare bones, but that's perfectly fine! The people running the shop are super nice too.

Yelp
I am not kidding when I say this is the best eatery for a student on McGill downtown campus (or really anyone in the area). Extremely good sandwiches for a very reasonable price. The people who work there always greet you with a warm welcome, and they know my order off by heart which is massive flex for me lol. I recommend this place to anyone who is on the go and needs a quick bite, or literally just wants their stomach to be happy.

Yelp
I wish I would've found out about this place earlier in my college career! Located less than a 2 minute walk from campus, Super Sandwich is the perfect cheap meal for any student with sandwiches ranging from around $3-$4.75. They have turkey (my usual), Black Forest ham, crab salad (that one isn't too great imo), chicken salad (was delicious when I used to eat chicken), salami, pastrami, egg salad, pickled vegetables, smoked chicken, smoked ham, and a few more types of sandwiches. Each sandwich comes with mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese depending on the sandwich. What makes this place so great is that the sandwiches are made in less than 30 seconds, and you're literally in and out in the blink of an eye. Delicious!

Yelp
Super Sandwich may or may not be an ongoing hostage situation.... either that or a sandwich based cult? Normal employees are not this fast and consistent. Super Sandwich is fast, consistent, and consistently #$%@ing fast. 18 seconds passed between when I exchanged payment for my sandwich, and when I received it. With a line stretching to the back of the store you can expect to be out of there in 5 minutes. A roast beef sandwich and a soda will run you $5.25, fill your stomach, and be easy on your wallet.

Yelp
Fairly simple sandwiches for super cheap, but still good. They also still sell Arizona for the original price. Will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Best budget sandwich shop in town. Fresh, quality ingredients, super fast friendly service. Excellent value. Ate here at least twice a week for years!

Yelp
This is definitely a college place. If I was a lot younger with less money I would have added another star but since I am not u would not recommend. The bread was good but the meat was very sub par. The roast beef was almost unrecognizable.

Yelp
Just delicious and cheap. I couldn't believe how amazing was. The service is great. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Even at ~3.50$, I'm hesitating on revisiting. I got one smoked chicken and one pastrami sub. In the subs, they add lettuce, 1.5 slices of tomato, couple slices of processed meat, and mustard or mayonnaise. The smoked chicken was literally slices of processed chicken like the ones you order at the supermarket for cheap sandwiches and nothing like the gud ole smoked chicken I'm used to get at a BBQ. The pastrami must have been some of the worst corned beef I've had in my life. Can't describe what went wrong, but it lacked a lot in flavour. Thank Lord for the mustard, for I got to enjoy mustard on white bread. Giving it 3/5 based on convenience (close to a school library, quick service, and cheap subs).

Yelp
Keys to success for any Mcgill student/alum. Great prices, value and fast service. The salami is a classic of mine -- top notch.

Yelp
I used to go here on a semi daily basis my second year at McGill and loved their sandwiches. Going there so often made me want to try other things and I sorta forgot about its existence...until halfway through every fall term when the new grad students would tell me about this "new place" they'd discovered called super sandwich. On Monday I went there again as I didn't bring enough food to school and many memories came to mind... Super sandwich, despite its cryptic location, seems to find its way. Their subs are fantastic and really cheap, which makes them ideal for student budgets. If you're in a rush, the longest part of getting lunch will be the "trek," as the sandwich will be ready within 30 seconds of placing your order.

Yelp
i only discovered this place during my third year of college when my friend took me there and i WISH i had found it earlier. i just started my 4th year and i know this is the only place i'll be buying lunch from if i don't eat at home. it's super close to mcgill's campus and multiple libraries so you can grab a super tasty sandwich for super cheap and super fast. my favourite is the chicken salad sandwich and i guess that's the same way for others too because it sells out relatively quickly, maybe around 2 pm, but that gives me a chance to try other fillings because if there's chicken salad then i GET chicken salad. the egg salad, cheese, and tuna are also really good. currently trying to recreate the chicken salad recipe so i can still get a sandwich this tasty when i leave montreal haha. also the owners are super nice!

Yelp
Cheap, large, delicious and lots of choices. Toasted brie and salami is my go to choice.

Yelp
This place is a little hidden inside Le Cartier building but worth visiting for any one wanting a quick feed for cheap. It's a convenience store so you have all the basic convenience store goods as well but everyone lines up for the sandwiches. The egg salad as the previous reviewer said is great and the chicken salad is awesome and a whole lot better than most of the crap Subway sell. The bread is fresh and tasty and you'll get it slightly warm when ready. Ever since finding out about this place I've gone every few days and my taste buds and wallet thank me for it.

Yelp
Solid food for a great prices!! I sometimes stock up on their sandwiches and go home to hole up and study!

Yelp
This rating is based on convenience, price, and quality. A McGill management student might say an awesome cost-benefit given a university student's low budget. It's also just an awesome sandwich; very big, toasted French bun, and just delicious. NO McGill, Concordia, or nearby professional should go without having tried a super sandwich. Prices range from $2.25 to at most $5.000. The clear favorite is the egg sandwich($2.75). Can add a soda and bag of chips for $1.75 extra.

Yelp
This is my favorite lunch spot go-to when I forget to pack my lunch (which is admittedly quite often!). Who can ask for more? A huge variety of sandwich fillings and all for under $5 (with taxes, chips and soda) plus or minus a dollar. It sounds silly, but it's cheaper to buy your lunch here than to bring something from home! The French bread is warm and tasty, the fillings freshly cut or made. I love their egg salad sandwich and with a chips and a pop, it comes to $4.75! You will always see a line-up, especially when the students come back for school. I hope they stay in business forever!
