"Is the East Village still punk rock? How about Superiority Burger? In both cases, the answer is: yeah, kind of. This vegetarian establishment used to operate out of a hectic cupboard-sized room on 9th Street, but now it’s in a bigger location with a retro diner-esque space across the street from Tompkins Square Park. The menu has expanded, but it’s still full of fun dishes that feel like they were tossed together like riffs at a jam session. Be sure to get the collard greens sandwich and white sweet potato with pickles and labneh—and try the signature quinoa-chickpea veggie burger at least once." - will hartman, bryan kim, willa moore, kenny yang, neha talreja
"In the back of Superiority Burger in the East Village, there’s a semi-private room where you can have a party with cheesy collard melts on perfect focaccia. Sit-down dinners and cocktail receptions at the vegetarian restaurant require a set menu and a room fee (which varies by season), but if you’re booking after 10pm, you can also do something called a Night Shift Afterparty Party. They also offer private lunch, which will run you $50 per seat." - neha talreja, bryan kim, hannah albertine, will hartman
"There are a lot of great veggie burgers in NYC, but Superiority Burger’s is the only one we’ve seen with actual groupies. The beloved East Village diner describes their food as “vegetarian” and “accidentally vegan,” which just means you’ll see some cheese and labneh on the menu, and the gelato isn’t dairy-free—but vegans have plenty of options, too. If you are good with dairy, our favorite sandwich is the focaccia stuffed with braised collard greens and cheese. This place is always a scene, plastered with homages to the neighborhood, and filled with every East Village type you’ll ever encounter. Don’t skip dessert." - molly fitzpatrick, bryan kim, neha talreja, kenny yang
"A buzzy New York restaurant founded by Brooks Headley in 2015 that earned a cult following for an inventive lacto-ovo-vegetarian menu and a signature burger Cate Blanchett once called “the thinking man’s burger.” It’s doing a one-day-only Los Angeles pop-up at a Hancock Park venue on Sunday, June 8; the walk-in-only event runs 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (expect a line before doors open) and, per the Instagram flyer, will feature the concept’s classics alongside farmers-market specials." - Rebecca Roland
"If you’re looking for a midmorning bacon fix, then this inventive, perpetually packed vegetarian spot in the East Village isn’t the place for you. But if a spongy, crisp waffle served with guava butter and syrup, grits, or a tofu scramble sound like a good way to start the day, then game on. Plus, it’s easier to walk in for brunch than dinner." - bryan kim, willa moore, molly fitzpatrick, will hartman, sonal shah
