The Bahian Caterer Offering a Taste of Afro-Brazilian Food in Palms | Eater LA

"A neighborhood Brazilian grocery that acts as a hub for LA’s Brazilian expat community, stocking hard-to-find staples and nostalgic products: manioc (cassava) flour, pão de queijo mix, Talento chocolate eggs (popular before Easter), catupiry cheese spread, Vale Douros cassava crackers, and cases of Guaraná soda." - Bill Esparza

Wow!! As a Brazilian myself I must say that I was amazed with this market here in Culver City. It had so many authentic, good-tasting yet a little pricy food from Brazil. It’s definitely worth it though! I was blown away with how everything tasted exactly like food from São Paulo. Something that is very rare to find here in the US. Even the Cashier spoke excellent Portuguese and it made for a welcoming exchange while I shopped. I live 30 miles away from here but I definitely intend on coming back again soon. Obrigado, tchau!

Google
Fun to find Brazilian staples here. The proprietor was standoffish. Not sure if it was because I spoke English or if she's had issues in the past but not very friendly.

Jared B.

Google
Great customer service and real brazilian products. I appreciate your willingness to share your expertise to us Americans who have married Brazilian ladies.

Marcelo B.

Google
A tiny Brazilian market with some specific Brazilian stuff...very nice.

stefano K.

Google
Homesick? Great source for you Brazilian needs!

Fernanda Chagas Moniz de Aragao G.

Google
They have all the Brazilian goodies for an affordable price! I bought tapioca and açaí and I couldn’t be happier! Amazing staff as well.

Andréa A.

Google
I found out this place a couple of years ago and was initially thrilled to find Brazilian products there. However, in recent months, I have become increasingly frustrated with the store as they have been selling expired products! On one occasion, I purchased an expired Knorr broth, and now, an Antarctica guaraná. 😒 I don't know what's going on with this grocery store, but if you're in a hurry, you do have to pay attention to the expiration dates or consider going somewhere else!

Google
The staff here is very helpful and exceptionally friendly. The prices are good and they have a good selection of products. Obviously, as expected, the store has niche Brazillian and Latin American products that can be hard to find. The only downside I would mention is that they don't accept Calfresh/EBT

Yelp
What a delightful market with the best vibe! A good balance of just the right amount and array of food, drinks and football gifts! Clean and the most pleasant and friendly service the moment you walk in. Street parking is limited so may require a little bit of a walk. But sitting next to another Brazilian resto and retail shop... you might wanna hang in their courtyard anyways for a bit! Love love...

Amesh

Yelp
Came here for one thing, left with multiple things, favorite thing was guarana , one of the best sodas i've ever had, the service was also amazing, i also met adriana and she's super sweet. I'll be here every week!

Mimi S.

Yelp
It's a great place and everyone there so amazing and they sell the best quality food & products. Very clean and friendly environment. I highly recommend Supermercado Brazil

Yelp
Thanks for making so many Brazilian products available. Whenever I have craving for anything from Brazil, this is the place. I was inspired to make some feijoada the other day. they had everything I needed. I picked up a Corte's Feijoada Mix, a Corte's carne seca, black beans, farofa, pimenta malagueta, folhinhas de louro, etc. Also love their Forno Minas frozen pao de queijo.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to find pretty much any type of Brazilian product. They function mostly as a grocery selling ingredients, canned food, snacks, frozen foods and meats, drinks, etc... In addition, they also carry clothes, sandals, Brazilian soccer related merchandise, flags, cuias, and more. Employees are polite. It's a nice place to visit, especially since it is in the Brazilian Mall, which also houses places like Roma Specialty Pizza and Pedrocas Burguer. Limited parking in the back. Street parking available.

Yelp
Owner/,worker was super nice.my wife is from Brazil and she found many things she liked. The prices were fare. While my wife was shopping I started to front face all the store. Worker was nice when I told her what I was doing she said ok. Thanks! I am a 40 year retail retiree. The store was nice well organized and clean. We will definitely go back. P.s. Current retail has no idea what they are doing. I could fix them all on a few months. But, I am tired of bosses that do not listen. I always broke records in sales and customer service. This is why you should pay attention to my recommendation.

Yelp
I bought a few items here and honestly this is not the first time I shop here but this list time was by far the worst at any Brazilian market. The food items like "polvilho" cracker and a couple other ones smelled old once I opened the bag and that was not for one item only it was for 3 separate items.... They r so far from my home that returning is nearly impossible. I continue to shop at the one in Torrance for now as those unexpected encounters are not good for me geographically... I feel that they should check items randomly so these things never happen again...

Yelp
I was driving to see a friend who had moved to San Diego from Brazil and I found this store by complete chance as I stopped for lunch nearby. I was so excited at the serendipity, that I got a bunch of surprise snacks, spices, and other food for my friend. The staff suggested to me lots of items that someone from Brazil would love if they were homesick. My friend loved the care package and it made me so so happy to take her a little taste from home. What a lovely place and lovely people here!

Mathew Y.

Yelp
Their picanha is not great and over priced. 10.50 a pound for select grade meat is crazy.
google avatar

Luiz C.

Yelp
Authentic, good service, great selection of Brazilian products you cannot find anywhere else.
google avatar

Gleicyane G.

Yelp
I used to live nearby. This is where I'd come to get my fix of Brazilian products. My favorite time to come was always around Easter for the ovos de pascoa, the large chocolate Easter eggs.

Mimi A.

Yelp
Ótimo para achar produtos brasileiros mas cuidado com os congelados, comprei risoles and empadão de camarão estavam vencidos à 10 dias e não foi barato!

Yelp
Really good little market with specialty products from Brasil. Location and parking are good and its inside a cute little plaza.

Yelp
Back in July 2017, I went to Rio and during my travels I befriended some locals who I still keep in touch with. Several times I have mentioned wanting guaraná and coxinha. After a friend in Jersey mentioned that she found a Brazilian super market in her area, I decided to enlist the help of Yelp in hopes of picking up a few goodies. I made a special trip just to shop but had a little trouble finding the place. The door is on the side of the building and the front of the building houses a pizza place and reads Brazilian Mall. I circled the street a few times before I figured that out. I entered the establishment and was greeted immediately. I listed to Portuguese being spoken and it reminded me of how much I missed Brazil. The store is on the small side but has a vast inventory. Being a first timer, I had to explore the store from front to back although I only came for two items. I picked up a few cases of guaraná and the coxinha and headed to the register. The prices are reasonable and the staff extremely friendly. Once I run out the açaí I bought in Rio, I will grab more from here. Now instead of wishing for Brazilian goodies, I can just head over to the local Brazilian market and fulfill my cravings.

Yelp
What an awesome supermarket that brings a bit of Brazil back to LA. A huge variety of different candies, chocolates, drinks, you name it. Great service as well as the lady at the front was extremely nice and kind of told me which candy was the best. Not expensive but not cheap. Definitely affordable and can't get any more tastier. Really like this place and suggest it to anyone looking for some Brazilian candy or even ingredients.

A R.

Yelp
Good variety of products, a little on the expensive side (you can find the same items cheaper across the street) and there were times we got home to discover an item was expired. Overall good place to feed your nostalgia.
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Awesome little find in Culver City! My husband is Brazilian and I FaceTimed him while I ran amuck! They have all the popular snacks from Brazil and even some apparel! Friendly and helpful staff too!
google avatar

Traian M.

Yelp
Nice place to eat ( I like Pastel and Feijoada) , plus here you can find different produces from Brasil.

Isabelle L.

Yelp
The best option in LA, lots of Brazilian products, best owners and employees, different and high level products.
google avatar

Yelp
Good variety of Latin food, I go specially for the tapioca flour - Brazilian flour for pancakes

Yelp
Ok.. this review is mostly for brazilians, if you are not familiar with brazilian food products this place may seem like a lame little market. But if you are brazilian and miss the indispensable ingredients for certain dishes, you will find most of them there. The service is good without being over attentive but every time I had a question, the sales lady promptly helped me. I wanted some Guarana, and they were out, so she took my phone to let me know when they receive more. Cintya P. of course if you convert from dollars to brazilian currency it will be more expensive, they have to fly everything here and pay import duties etc.. It is actually far from being a rip off.. My favorite products are the calabresa sausage, (in the yellow package) it is smoked, and is delicious in pasta sauces, or cooked with beans or in soups to give a smoky flavor. I also like the catupity cheese, and I use it in the chicken pot pie. The pão de queijo, (cheese rolls) come frozen, and you just follow the instructions in english on how to bake them. They carry the same brand I use to buy in Brazil, "Forno de Minas". I buy some seasonings, and even rice. I miss Brazil, but thanks to Brazilian market, i don't miss the food since I can replicate everything here. They have a small parking lot in back that is also used by Bella Vista Pizza clients.

Yelp
Thiis place is great , my wife is brazilian and when she misses home cooked meals . We always come to this shop to purchase all her items . The staff is very nice and always helpful . I just wish they had a store closer to my home .

Yelp
Guarana Antartica: $7.99 Acai Smoothie (12 Pack): $32.00 Constantly being mistaken for a Brazilian and having prices quoted to me in Portuguese: Priceless
google avatar

Cintya P.

Yelp
Varato?????! Really? I think not my friends. Expensive is more like it everyone :o). If you were to do the currency exchange from Brazilian Reais to American Dollars, you're being ripped off like no other. The customer service is so bad that the owners just sit around and watch TV, are on the internet and on the phone while you walk around clueless and wondering what all the products are (especially for those who don't understand Brazilian Portuguese!). Some products did have an early expiration date and they have a limited selection of products. Thus, SUPERMERCADO is so not SUPER lol Mercado galera! I would rather go to Camaguey right around the corner a few blocks down.
google avatar

Yelp
The cutest little Brazilian convenience store I've come across! It's in this isolated tiny strip mall of other Brazilian stores in Culver City. Super cute! I came here for pao de queijo mix. They had it on sale for $1.99 a box! Score!!! The cashier was helpful (she helped me figure out how much I would need for my party). Honestly, she was sorta busy talking with another worker, but since I was just walking around looking at what they had, I didn't really care. I got my pao de queijo mix so I was a happy camper! Oh, and park in the tiny lot behind the building! I'm definitely coming back!

Yelp
I come here pretty often - when you're married to a Brazilian they naturally crave some hometown foods that aren't readily available here. The products are imported and we're able to get lot's of frozen treats that are addicting - Pão de queijo (yummy cheese rolls), Coxinha de gallinha (shredded chicken meat made with wheat and rolled in breadcrumbs) and Heart of Palm Empanadas are my favorite. I'm told that the canned dulce de leche is better or tastes different than ours, same with condensed milk used for recipes. In any case, this little store allows us to cook and have Brazilian treats on hand to serve to friends easily and I can't imagine having to go out to Bosa Nova each time we are craving Brazilian food.

Roxanna H.

Yelp
Love, love, love the quaint supermarket. Excellent customer service and I always find what I am looking for. During the lockdown this was my place to go for basic essentials and has turned me now to a frequent customer.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Small, but they had everything I needed. I went specifically to buy passion fruit juice from concentrate (maracuja) for a dessert recipe. The cashier saw what I was buying and asked if I was making passion fruit mousse-- I said yes-- and she offered to get the ingredient that I was missing in my basket. Her guess was correct, I needed it.. Haha. Good place.. prices really weren't bad considering that everything was imported from Brazil.
google avatar

Roya K.

Yelp
Tons of Brazilian candies and a good frozen selection also. I came here to find candies for a friend of mine who is Brazilian. I didn't know what was popular or good but the cashier was very friendly and helped me pick out some good finds! Great and clean store with good customer service
google avatar

Mia S.

Yelp
Came here to buy passionfruit pulp and passionfruit juice which you can't really find anywhere else. The market is small, but they have all things brasilian :) Can't go wrong!
google avatar

Fo B.

Yelp
Really cool Brasilian market in Culver City. Lots of stuff that you just can't find elsewhere (farofa, guarana, frozen goods, Brasilian snacks, pao de queijo). Lots of havianas, hats, etc as well. There is a Brasilian resto connected to it where you can get your Brasilian snacking fix. Really nice people and great selection, so go.

Luiz L.

Yelp
Excellent market with a great variety of products and very friendly staff. Just stopped by the other day and got their new Samba Cheese Rolls. Best ones I've ever had. So tasty. Highly recommended!! Also among my favorites are the Catupiry cheese and the sausages. 5 stars!
google avatar

Natasha G.

Yelp
Love this store. I've been going here with my family for as long as I can remember. They have cute Brazilian bikinis you can't find anywhere else in LA. Always have my favorite snacks and chocolates too.
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
I am Brazilian so this place is heaven for me. The place has everything I can possibly want as a Brazilian, including picanha, feijoada, farofa, Pao de queijo, guarana, pastel, coxinha, etc.
google avatar

Alex J.

Yelp
Cool little store. I peeked in while waiting on a pizza on the other side of their shared patio. It is small so there isn't a lot of stuff but it is packed while still being clean and neat. I picked up some Brazilian frozen food and snacks, both were delicious. I have to come back for more food when I have more of a plan.
google avatar

Yelp
After spending a month in Brazil for the World Cup I found craving myself some Brazilian pastries and chocolates... a little searching let me to this little gem in Culver City which has a lot the candies I used to find in Rio De Janeiro. If you are looking for an affordable Brazilian supermarket in Culver City/west side area this is the one... I am pretty sure you will find most things here. They also have a side that serves pastries like Empanadas, etc.
google avatar

Shaun J.

Yelp
I loved bringing my Brazilian fiancé here and giving her a little taste of home. We got so many traditional Brazilian dishes here including picana and açaí!
google avatar

Rodrigo d.

Yelp
I like this market. I never went there to talk to the owners or socialize. I would rather go to Starbucks for that. I know what I like and/or need, and we are usually in and out in a few minutes. If you want to learn about the products, try reading the ingredient labels in english or google it.... LOL Prices are higher than average, but the variety is pretty good. Finding parking can be a problem and these two items are the ones that would be worth the final star on my review...

Bren L.

Yelp
I discovered this store while shopping at international stores across the street. The owners are friendly and helpful. I only bought pao de queijo and some coffee, but I will be back. This store doesn't have a big selection of products, but many staples to feel like home
google avatar

Belinda M.

Yelp
Funny that the only negative reviews on Yelp for this market are from people who keep mentioning some crappy latin market called Camaguey. (Internet trolls perhaps??) If I wanted cheap Mexican goods, there are a million markets around LA that have that. The negative reviews are comparing apples to oranges. Stop wasting our time and go take your ignorant comments elsewhere. This is a great market for hard to find Brasilian foods...the customer service may be slow and unhelpful, but even that's kinda authentic.....rsrs.
google avatar

Vicky R.

Yelp
Absolutely love shopping here for Brazilian products when I am in this part of the westside. I get to practice my poor Portuguese and the staff is always kind enough to make suggestions on a recipe. Easy place to shop, ask questions about products and have a pleasant conversation.

Natalia R.

Yelp
The Brazilian market is easily missed; you are driving on Venice Blvd, look at your right, see a yellow building that says "BRAZILIAN MALL" but the place looks dead. If you are feeling like investigating it, turn on the first right and you'll find this hidden market, full of Brazilian goodies. For the ones who have been there before, let me tell you, this place improved! Two years ago, the Brazilian Market was at the same location but offered less products and an awful service. Nowadays, there is a very nice girl working there who always smiles at the customers, refrigerators stocked with food and lots of food and clothing around the store. I went there last week and found empadinha (mini pot pie), kibe (beef with herbs), esfihas (Arabian food famous in Brazil), beef stroganoff, and Brazilian meat, like picanha. Across the refrigerators there are shirts, flip flops (Havaianas for $15!), Brazilian flags and cangas (it's like a cover up that you use at the beach or to lay on in the sand). Other things that sell at the market: geleia de mocoto, baton, bala sete belo, bombom sonho de valsa, a box of chocolates from Garoto and Nestle, bis, trakinas.... Parking is behind the building. I heard the Brazilian Mall will open a Pizza Place; they will offer rounds of pizza for a reasonable price (in Brazil we call that "rodizio") ....this place loses one star because of the prices.

Yelp
After living in Brazil for a little while, I craved the Brazilian products that I had become accustomed to when I came back to the US. Luckily, I found Supermercado Brasil to purchase my Brazilian goods. That was 11 years and I have been shopping there ever since. Since I started shopping there, they have expanded and improved their selection. Though still tiny, they carry all of the essentials, from guaraná to sweets to Brazilian coffee. They also have a good selection of frozen Brazilian foods, such as pão de queijo, coxinha, and pastéis.
google avatar

Scott C.

Yelp
Great place to find those hard-to-find grocery items. Small but clean and well-orgaonized with friendly service and helpful cashiers. I was there to buy Passion Fruit juice concentrate which is pretty much impossible to find at Ralphs. I needed it for a passion fruit mousse recipe. They had it, as well as Guarana soda and other Brazilian specialties that I love and can find nowhere else. They also have a small gift section with things like Brazilian flags, bumper stickers, etc. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

alice a.

Yelp
Overpriced, staff very rude, not interested in help you find anything, mainly if you are Brazilian like they are. Across street there is a Latino market called Camaguey. Much better, there is basically the same and more, and the prices are reasonable. There is even out of date products there! Eeeew!
google avatar

Twilighter O.

Yelp
I was so excited to come here! I bought a package of cheese empanadas (4 in a package), a bag of large coxinhas, 2 bags of pao de queijo, 2 brigadeiros, 2 packs of Bono cookies, and a 12 pack of Guarana Antartica. All I spent was $30! I have lots of friends living in Brazil and from Brazil and they say I got a great deal. I will come again! I wish they sold cachaça.

Rachel G.

Yelp
Just what we needed when we were craving yummy authentic Brazilian food!!!! The owner was soooo sweet. We drove 2.5 hrs to get here and Ihave no doubt we will make another trip!
google avatar

Moozhan T.

Yelp
My Brazilian friend was super excited about this store. Perhaps if you're Brazilian, you'll find this store very nice, and full of nostalgic sentiments. For me, it wasn't anything special. Most items here were over priced, and a quick search on the internet, confirmed that for most cases I could get the items for almost half the price on Amazon, which is by no means the cheapest place. Also, the girl here doesn't seem very friendly. I mean she was super friendly towards my Brazilian friend who spoke Portuguese with her, but with me... not so much.
google avatar

Gabriel A.

Yelp
By far the best Brazilian market I've ever been to. They carry everything that I need, great prices and the staff is amazing.
