Where to Order Tamales in Oakland, Berkeley, and the East Bay | Eater SF

"If you plan ahead and show up at 9 a.m. you can score fresh tamales made in small batches at Supermercado Mi Tierra on Fruitvale most days of the week — though they sell out, for good reason. The masa is tender and flavorful, and the chicken tamale is everything anyone could want: juicy and well-seasoned, with an equal ratio of filling to masa. You can also find pork and cheese tamales. For Nochebuena, order 1-2 days in advance." - Annelies Zijderveld

My wife Luz Estrada and I just went and bought a few things from supermercado mi Tierra on 96th & international Blvd. In this location they have a lot more than just food in simple home items. We've been needing a toaster for the past 2 years and have not had the extra cash to do so. But for 17 and some change, We were able to afford it this time. Our 15 year old daughter SOFIA ANDREA, likes waffles and we have not had a toaster to toaster waffles. So today we went to purchase a few items and we actually spend more than $100 just because they have more to offer at this location..... So to the workers here thank you for the great customer service & for acknowledging us as soon as we come in and make sure we have everything we need it before leaving the store...

First off so many things wrong with this store the bread is always old and bugs flying around it. The carne Asada Have a black brown to it, which is expired, which is a health hazard. The meat should not be black or brown that’s due to lack oxygen and the storage and how is taking care of. They can get people sick like that I will be calling Health inspection. The meat is not even fresh. There’s some days it is and some days that it’s not. That is unacceptable.

I need to agree with Elizabeth Gomez. The store can and should do better at cleanliness. The meat counter is the smell that grosses me out the most. Produce is relatively fresh for the most part, but there are some foods that are harder to find fresh. The reason for this is their prices. Some items have outrageous prices. However, dairy is what I've noticed specifically has crazy prices. I'd rather walk further to my local Safeway and pay $1-2 less for eggs and milk. You are ultimately paying for the convenience of not walking out of your neighborhood.

Been a frequent customer for the last 3 years since I moved close by n last resort most times... Im very disappointed with this place. When walking in today Smelled like a dirty mop head was used to mop the floors... And that was the straw that broke the camel's back!!! Its unacceptable for a Market that sales food to smell so disgusting!!! Also other things unacceptable the meat department always has a bad smell of meats gone bad... The scales in the meat/deli department are not calibrated correctly thus consumers is paying more for air... Some Meat department staff doesn't know the meat cuts and if your not careful you will be charged for something you didn't want... if you buy meat here make sure it what you using the day off because their meat turns every quickly!!! As well as the sauce they make due to using old produce... the Produce is always terribly bad... as much as you see staff replenish produce the produce always seems to be in very bad shape... Bread holder is useless and if you don't go get bread early it will be dry by noontime... The tamales are a hit or miss... sometimes they are okay n other time have little no meat or to much water was added while steaming so this come out wet & mushy. The Manger is very friendly and some stuff as well... but the stuck up staff out ways them all... and I'm speaking on what I've experienced since coming here... no hear say... I got receipts

They have a racist security guard. I am an Asian guy who always buys at their grocery store. Today I was waiting at the checkout. The racist security guy didn't stay close to the checkout when a latino man was checking out. But when I checked out after him, he was walking around me like I was about to steal something. He does the same thing to black people too. Very uncomfortable and very rude security guard. And the strange thing is he knows I am the regular customer. I think he is doing that on purpose so people he doesn't like feel uncomfortable. Very unprofessional security guard. Beware!

I was followed around today inside the supermarket for using my own bag. (Which I've done countless times over the past 20 years at this exact location.) Security Guard finally approached me once I was at the cashier register having my items scanned, He indirectly laughed off having to discriminate against me and told me next time I shouldn't bring my own bag because I look like I have other motives. I have two videos of the incident. I hope this security guard gets some more training in PROFILING or find another profession that won't get him in trouble.

The interior is quite beautiful and modern. I am always pleasantly surprised that it feels cool and fresh inside(even at the butchers counter!) No offensive odors, and a good selection of fresh vegetables at all times. Attractive and sanitary, plus the prices satisfy me pocket.
