Where to Eat and Drink in Hillsboro, Oregon | Eater Portland

"It’s not scientifically proven, but taquerias embedded in supermarkets are often sure bets. At least that theory holds for Supermercados Mexico, where the tacos teeming with juicy al pastor and wonderful lengua beat any typical taco truck. And tacos are just a small portion of the menu, which covers most of the Mexican all-stars. As an added bonus, the taqueria’s well-stocked salsa bar provides a standout green avocado sauce, ideal for smothering burritos. For immediate gratification, Supermercados Mexico has a handful of decoratively tiled tables near the counter for dining in." - Janey Wong

14 Fantastic Specialty Markets in East Portland | Eater Portland

"All of the essentials for a Mexican meal can be found at this supermarket, whose ceiling is festooned with brightly colored pinatas. In the meat section, cuts of taco meat are conveniently situated across from locally made tortillas. Find self-serve conchas, churros, and other Mexican pastries displayed in a bakery case nearby refrigerated desserts like flan, tres leches cake, and rice pudding. The store smartly stocks the makings of a michelada — an assortment of Mexican beer and tomato juice — side-by-side in a cooler. At the back of the store, the fruit stand La Casita de Frutas slings spicy-sweet mangonadas and snacks like esquites." - Janey Wong

Google
We love this place! Wished it was more convenient or closer to central portland, but we make the 30+ mins drive weekly, for our authentic Mexican feast, and stock up on ingredients. Great salsas and marinated meats too.

Nestor Coria

Google
Great store that has a great selection of products and some hard to find items.

Google
Omg I love this place. I search for a Mexican restaurant 1 day before my flight to Oregon I found this and I know right away I have to stop there. When I visit omg food is delicious, bakery is good and grocery store is so big. Also they have inside fresh fruit 100% recommended

Joshua Krogstad

Google
Everytime I've been here, Im impressed by the hustle, professionalism, and courtesy of the entire staff. The cafeteria crew is fast and helpful when I have questions, and greets me with smiles. After getting pollo asado, chile rellenos y arroz, I get a fruit smoothie from the nice lady in the back. I can't get this combination of food and service anywhere else!

Google
Just came to this market and saw so much selection a lot to choose from. They have a butcher area / hot case / bakery area too. Aisles have everything you’d need like soap/ detergents / pots / cups/ plates/ chiles and much more. Everyone was so nice the place was very clean and organized . The prices aren’t bad but just like everything else it can go up . Will be coming back .

Google
We had a terrible experience last Sunday July 13. We wife and I came for some grocies and some items from the bakery. While getting plastic bags, we saw two cockroaches. One in the bread case and one outside by the plastic bags. I told one of the employees in the bakery, but I don't think she spoke much english. After that, we asked the employee at the fruit stand about it, and she thought they might be mosquitos or something because it is hot and it is mosquito season. She was busy, but recommended that we tell a cashier or somebody in the front, but we just left and went to El Tapatio on 183rd and Stark, over by El Vaquero Elegante. I think we will be going there from now on, I'm sad to say.

Google
Love this place. Very clean, very organized, and excellent customer service. The prepared foods are absolutely delicious. The meat counter is always busy and very fresh. The produce selection is immaculate.

Yelp
Food is amazing and fresh. I just moved from San Francisco to Vancouver, Washington and it took me a minute to find this place. Would recommend for authentic Mexican food/products.

Yelp
I am so late writing this review, but we had a wonderful experience working with the bakery staff here back in May. They made two amazing customized tres leches cakes for our daughter's first birthday party, and we couldn't have been happier. Super affordable, very friendly and accommodating staff, so many options for sheet cake sizes and decor and for the decor on the circular cake, and it was all made FRESH the morning of the event! So fresh that it was still a little warm and some of the beautiful toppings on the circular cake started to slide off in transport, and there was a little leaking of the milk, but oh.my! Was it delicious!!! And the cakes were still so beautiful even after some sliding around. Everyone was raving about them. The leftovers held up and tasted delicious for days after too. All around a fabulous experience, and I'd recommend them to anyone!

Yelp
I think this may be my favorite grocery store. It is so full of color, people, and really great food. The taqueria in back is excellent, and is a great way to grab some prepared food. I've also enjoyed the panderia (bakery) goods. You can find several street food options on the sidewalk out front (there is always excellent esquites). And in the same physical building towards the back, there is a sort of indoor mall with various independent vendors. The store itself is about the size of a safeway (in fact, I think this building may have, years ago, been a safeway). The shelves are full, and there is a great selection (obviously centered around Mexican products). I've had great luck with the fresh fruits and vegetables, and the deli area has a lot of meat options as well as ceviche in bulk. I always leave with some good food.
google avatar

Adrienne M.

Yelp
Everything you need for dinner is here! I was so happy to explore this market. I took home stuff to make my Favorites! Great Prices and just good stuff you can't get at your Safeway!

Annel A.

Yelp
Their mini restaurant is in the back. They have Pretty good tacos. I Just wish it was more Sanitary and organised
google avatar

Tim B.

Yelp
A visit to the Supermercado is a mini-vacation to Mexico. Lots of music, laughter, and, of course, great food!
google avatar

Ricardo L.

Yelp
Everything in this store was great, people checking me out were very helpful and the store was very neatly organized!
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
All this place needs is a scooter dealership and washing machines for sale to rival my favorite Market in Mexico! They've got it all! Baked goods to burritos a full service meat counter and every hard to find ingredient you need!
google avatar

Maria M.

Yelp
This Mexican grocery store is such a gem! They always have ample staff working the butcher/deli dept, their ceviche/salsa selection is to DIE for, and if you spend a certain amount of money ($50?) they tell you to pick a free liter of soda on your way out. If I lived closer I'd shop here weekly, but it's totally worth the drive if it's out of your way. A+++
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
It's nice but things are very overpriced here. Staff is okay, not friendly but not welcoming either. At least the store is clean and kept well.

Omar P.

Yelp
Food here is amazing. They got fresh Mexican pastries like 3 leches cake, flan, chocolate cake , pan dulce, crème filled churros , tacos , tortas , burritos , fresh Mexican juice and more like sauces and salsas to take to go. I got the biggest smile when I saw the Mexican bread , tres leches cake, and the crème filled churros. They have everything I like in one spot. 10/10 would recommend this place to others who are looking to fulfill their Mexican food cravings. Eating out here is also priced fair and there's nothing to complain when the food is actually good too. I got the biggest smile on my face when I first saw they had churros and I least expected it.
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
the food here is just amazing! rosa in the back with her fruit stand is especially amazing with her wonderful service. she works so hard and her esquites are to DIE for!! really love going here :)
google avatar

Katherine D.

Yelp
I ordered a tres leches cake for a birthday party. It was delicious and affordable. Now I can't eat tres leches unless it comes from here.
google avatar

Scott G.

Yelp
If you are making tamales, this is your one stop destination in the PDX area. They had pork shoulder ($1.99/lb) and prepared masa (.$99/lb) as well as corn husks, lard and tamal masa flour. It's a Supermercados which usually means the quality and value are good and cleaner than smaller markets. It's a bit of a drive with Hillsboro on the west side and Gresham on the east side but well worth it because they are very likely to have what you are looking for and the people who work there are super nice. Check it out.

Yelp
THIS MARKET IS A WONDERLAND!!! Where do I begin?!? Their deli / seafood counter / hot deli on the far right-hand side is EPIC. ABSOLUTELY EPIC. Like ceviche? They have 4+ different varieties. Like fresh meats? They have an astounding selection of cuts that could blow White's Meats out of the water..no joke. Like amazing produce? They've got you covered. Guarantee you'll see veggies you didn't even know existed, like 4 foot cactus leaves. Need a jeweler? Yup. You guessed it. They have that too. Need a pharmacy? They got your back. Need a gift shop? Fully stocked with all sorts of gems, even fun toys for the kiddos!! **Bonus: There is an on-site cantina that serves some ridiculously bomb ass food at an EXTREMELY reasonable price. $2 tacos? Yes please!! Oxtail? 100%!! Everything is fresh. The staff is super helpful and friendly. Bright & lively store. What a goldmine of fabulous right off Division in Gresham!! See you soon dolls!

Yelp
I like this market because of the fruits and vegetables plus the meat options are awesome! I would recommend also eating there.

Yelp
Awesome place to grab Spanish delicacies! We usually love to stop by to grab a bottle of Guava Jarritos for an amazing price of $1.99! Once in this space, you can explore the wide variety of Spanish delicacies in the expansive Deli section! The mixto ceviche is about average on my experiences of eating ceviche.

Judith S.

Yelp
I went into the bakery for a Tres Leche Cake and was not disappointed! A crowded store told me that they are highly recommended by those who know!!

Silvia Q.

Yelp
we've always gotten our tres leches cakes from here and lately the cakes have been so dry. very disappointing.
google avatar

Yelp
Best burritos you can find. Every ingredient fresh and hot. A warm tortilla packed to explode. My wife is real picky About rice and beans and she loves this place. There's a gay Mexican dude (you will notice him). Makes the best burrito ever (no homo). Check it out if you don't believe me

k p.

Yelp
Friendly and helpful staff. I found what I was looking for and the pan de muertos was fresh. When I asked about sugar skulls for Dia de los Muertos, the cashier asked the other workers where I might find them and directed me to a neighboring shop where a kind woman helped me wrap up my skulls with care. A good experience.
google avatar

Mark J.

Yelp
We cannot recommend Supermercado Mexico enough! Far above the average mercado. Amazing selection, terrific produce, items you wont find anywhere else, a stunning carneceria, food-to-go made fresh constantly, and best of all... spotless and clean. Go. Shop. Be amazed.
google avatar

Miki H.

Yelp
Their deli were amazing. Best Mexican Grilled chicken!! Try combo, which come with rice and salsa.

Jake K.

Yelp
This review is for people with service animals. Don't bring your SERVICE animals even into this store because you'll be harassed. Felt incredibly disrespected and not going to tolerate it. It's actually illegal what they did. He's wearing a service vest, I showed the manager his card showing he is a legitimate service dog NOT an emotional support dog, and was told he was not welcome unless I carried him even though he is a service animal and my back is messed up. Other than the employees it's a great store for sure. I'll be talking to my lawyer about this 100%. Ive never been so harassed. My wife speaks Spanish and overheard the employees talking very poorly about my dog and I to other customers. Racism is not just one sided, I experienced racism and harassment over my dog. This a wonderful establishment but I was caught so off guard by the employees.

Just My Opinion 1.

Yelp
Most authentic Mexican market in the Portland Metro area considering I was born, raised and resided in LA for 32 years before moving to the PNW. Food is good, pan dulce is fresh but the prices are crazy high. They take advantage of the fact that it's one of the few hispanic stores in the area. No chinguen.. ‍
google avatar

Valerie A.

Yelp
Always outstanding everything. We go every single week for our fresh meats, cheeses, breads, pastries and veggies. The entire atmosphere is so warm, the employees are always singing! They also have an indoor dining space, everything is worth a try, I never thought I would like goat and their trec leche is my motivation to get through the week.

Yelp
I can't speak for anything but the bakery, but I was so happy with the cake I ordered! It was the 30th birthday of my twin sister and me, and I was in charge of securing a cake big enough to feed 25+ people. I don't like those floury, cheap shortening-frosted cakes from most grocery stores, and figured tres leches would guarantee it was at the least a moist and flavorful cake. I wasn't wrong! Even people at the party who had never heard of tres leches cake loved it. And, most importantly, $30 got me a cake so enormous, I was sending people home with solo cups full of cake! I've got a tupperware of cake in my fridge the size of a river raft. I'm about to eat my second serving of tres leches cake in six hours. It's so good, and keeps very well. I should add- the nice man working the bakery counter was very patient with me, despite the minor language barrier. I kept having to ask stupid questions, and he just repeated the relevant nouns until I figured out what he was saying. I really appreciate it when I can go to a market where I don't speak the language but the employees are still attentive and kind. Russian Elegance bakery and market on 102nd and Glisan is the same way- you can ask a dozen clumsy questions and they're eternally patient. I'm really glad to have another bakery on my list of go-to's. Now I've just got to go back and visit the meat counter! It was hard walking past all those flawless sausages and not stopping to buy any.

Yelp
This place transports me back to my childhood, I spent the beginning of my teens till adulthood growing up in the San Joaquin Valley of California so I've had the delights of many authentic dishes from both friends and family to spectacular restaurants. And this hidden gem at the back of this Mercado is amazing you just can't get fresher then this without hunting and gathering the ingredients yourself. All of the ingredients are used fresh from the Mercados shelves each. You can purchase the same ingredients a mere few feet from your seat. Reminds me of the Swap meets and Flea Markets my grandparents and I used to wonder through gathering our wares then stopping for a fresh made lunch. This is a piece of Mexico transported straight to Portland. It's a great date night idea shop for dinner while having lunch. I had the pastor burrito and my husband had the carne Asada tacos. Both were fresh hot and OnPoint with flavor. They also have free fresh homemade chips and a amazing salsa bar. Enjoy
google avatar

Vinnie B.

Yelp
The best Carne Asada in Portland! Best Carnitas, Best salsas, best cakes. This store has it all, It's clean, well stocked with hard to find Latin products. Great meat department carne asada pre- marinaded as well as hot food. It also has a fantastic bakery. Did I mention this store is clean and so very well organized. Well deserved *****5 star from me. Worth the trip to 174th and Division. They even gave me a free 2 ltr soda at checkout.
google avatar

Sami L.

Yelp
Nice employees, clean store, tasty pastries and all the dried chiles and canned hominey one would ever want. They have a large meat selection with excellent cuts you can't find at your local Safeway or Freddies. Their bakery selection is also quite great. They make cakes as well as pan dulce. Can't say one bad thing about this place. There is a taqueria near the meat counter like at most Mexican supermercados. I didn't try anything but plenty of people looked pretty happy munching away. Employees speak English and Spanish and when I checked out having spent $60 I got a free orange 2 liter of Fanta soda. Can't beat that service.

Yelp
Toto, we are not in Portland anymore! Imagine this: two old Chinese ladies (and the writer of this review, who is not that old) walked into a Mexican grocery in search of chicharrón. My mom and I recently drove down to Portland to visit a childhood friend of hers. Upon discovering our mutual love for crispy pork belly, my mom's friend insisted that I must try the deep fried pork belly here and I'm so glad she tipped me off to this place! So I found myself standing inside Supermercados Mexico, under the colorful pinatas and walls of colorful candy, snacks, and all sorts of sugary concoctions (and tropical fruit!). This place is HUGE, well organized, and clean. The deli is located in the back and my, oh my, what glorious heap of chicharrón they have! I had always thought that chicharrón was Spanish for pork rinds (pork skin), but here, it's deep fried pork belly with the crispy skin still attached to it. It's so, so, so good (cholesterol be damned). This will now be a regular stop on all my Portland trips.

Tamarina G.

Yelp
I'm getting my Flan Pie for Thanksgiving here. $25 and worth every penny. The best Flan ever. Not too sweet but just right. They have the Flan in a dessert cup too for $2.50. Delicious. I'll have to place my order in. When I do I'll get a small cup of flan. The deli section is extensive. A bit pricey but good. They have a complete produce section and all kinds of good stuff in the Isles like Black Corn Tortillas. The people are nice however the cashiers need to smile a little.

Katherine N.

Yelp
The lady in the back that makes esquites was so disrespectful and rude. Do not buy from her little station. Rude service and bad food. The grocery store is nice but her stand inside the store was not good.
google avatar

Yelp
Supermercados Mexico is certainly an awesome supermarket with a fresh meat department, produce, and a vast array of ethnic Mexican groceries. However, on this day, I only had tacos on my mind and headed for the taqueria inside the store. I ordered four tacos: asada, pollo, carnitas, and pastor. Each of the four was pretty good in its own way with good flavor, and the meats were lean and not gristly. I also liked the way that all four meats were cut uniformly into small pieces, which makes for an evenly balanced and easy-to-handle taco. (Some other places have uneven size and shaped pieces of meat, which make a lumpy, awkward-to-hold taco.). There was a space with seating in the taqueria area. This was a handy place to eat, but the close proximity to the kitchen caused my clothes to absorb the kitchen's greasy smells of cooking. This isn't a big deal to me personally, but I just want to mention it to let readers know. Well, I live nearby so I have the option of taking my food to go to eat at home anyway. Overall, these tacos are a good value at $1.50 each, plus the supermarket itself is an interesting place to look around while you are there.

Yelp
Wow! Can I have some more stars to check off please? This place earns it's name, and is now my new go to place to eat Mexican food. More on that later. You know how most Mexican grocerias are kind of "third world"? Not here. This store is super clean, well stocked, and reasonably priced. Cleaner than the former Albertsons it once was. The nearly store length meat counter is full of beautiful cuts of beef, pork, chicken and sea food. Some are marinated like the al pastor, beef barbacoa, and fajita skirt steak. Some are cooked, like the carnitas, barbacoa, grilled chicken, and ready to take home for dinner. You can get a package of 1 1/2 pounds of carnitas, 20 tortillas, 1 lb. of beans, 1 lb. of rice to go for $16.99 Dinner for 4 for under $20! They have shrimp ceviche and shrimp cocktails. They have their own well stocked bakery, and fruit plate/smoothie stand in the back. Funny thing, it has been closed every time I come in. They told me that she sets up in store, is not part of the franchise, and only comes in when she feels like it! LOL But the main reason for my review is the in store taqueria..I had the 3 tacos plate with rice and beans for $5.99 I chose carne asada, (grilled steak) carnitas,(pork fried in lard) and beef barbacoa. The barbacoa is super tender, melt in your mouth chunks of beef simmered in a spicy (not hot) sauce. The asada is very good, Their delicious carnitas are done exactly right! I would know, I am an admitted carnitas junkie. Tacos can also be had for $1.25 each. Done exactly as in Mexico, in the double little corn tortillas with onion and cilantro garnish, and with a choice of about 6 different salsas. I can't wait to try the al pastor, sopes, huraches, grilled chicken, burritos, tortas, goat birria, pozole and oh yes, the breakfasts. Huevos rancheros, huevos con chorizo, breakfast burritos, etc. My dining partner opted for the chili relleno which was filled from stem to stern with a full half inch of creamy Mexican white cheese,(queso fresco) dipped in the foamy eggie batter, and fried, served in a pool of delectable tomato broth. Very delicious. No you can't have a margarita or a beer here, but if you want a traditional home made style Mexican meal exactly how you get it in Mexico, this is the place.

Alejandra P.

Yelp
Been coming here for a long time and today was wow cashier didn't charge me for candles and rice pudding didn't see till lady approached my daughter and myself in the car.being treated like thief's I was outraged that they would go to the extent to want to calm the cops even though I went back to pay never again
google avatar

Bart L.

Yelp
This store in Gresham on Divison is warm, all the friendly staff are helpful and focused on customer service, there is a quality and fantastic vegetable selection, a WONDERFUL bakery and a very large and diverse meat counter. The stores entire physics layout and organization is thoughtful, practical and easy to navigate. The diversity, variety, quality and cost for food and various assundary items is fair to moderate. In the back right corner is a vibrant cafe which will a require a separate review to share this unique taste experience and venue. I love the music and in store notices. This is a MUST shop experience. You will be back again and again!
google avatar

Jes A.

Yelp
My friend likes it. I do not. Just tried a gristle and rice... oh, wait, it was a barbacoa burrito. Will probably try again, being told it was bad luck and I should try the tacos. Won't try my luck with the barbacoa anytime soon though and will probably avoid the burritos all together.

Charlie P.

Yelp
This place is one of my top 3 spots to get tacos. You name it they have it. Order the lengua and pastor tacos and take a creamy flan to go.
google avatar

Nanthawat J.

Yelp
Lots and lots of meat along with lots of pandulce! It's hard trying to find Mexican candy in Portland but they have what I want to fill my spicy Mexican candy cravings.
google avatar

Lee H.

Yelp
This place isn't exactly convenient, but if you're looking for quality Mexican ingredients, it's worth the drive. I was looking for pork belly at New Seasons, but they don't carry it there, which is odd. Anyway, one of the butchers suggested I check out Supermercados, and I'm glad I did. I ended up getting some dried chiles from their vast selection, and they're sold bulk, so you can choose a few different kinds without having to buy a full package. The meat selection is huge and they have a lot of marinated cuts. The hot foods/deli selection is huge. Tons of hot foods and there's a made to order taqueria and seating area to enjoy your tacos. This place has it all. I'm telling you, it's worth the drive.
google avatar

Frank O.

Yelp
Friendly people. Great selection. I like being treated nicely even though I don't speak Spanish. It has become my go to Latino food market. I gave up on the two other groceries close by as I seem to get different treatment. Fresh salsas, all the cuts of meat you can't get at a major grocery store, candy isle. Lots of fresh different chilis and cactus and even plants I don't know. I love coming here. Homemade food from south of the border is even better than your favorite Latino restaurant!!
google avatar

Mxyzptlk L.

Yelp
Really great place! Super clean, and very friendly workers! The meat counter is absolutely EPIC! Fresh chorizo! Great prices too! Bakery too! What more could you need/want?
google avatar

Seema F.

Yelp
I found out about this place from a flyer in my mailbox. It seemed like a bit far to drive for a good sale on meat and salsa, but I am so glad I did. The meat I wanted, arrachera, was one of the best cuts of beef I've ever had---tender and flavorful for a really good price. I was also there for their molcajete salsa and ended up leaving with a pound of each of their salsas (rojas tomatillo ended up being my favorite). All their groceries are really cheap, and pretty good quality too--8 limes for a dollar, plum tomatoes for $0.79/lb! Not only do they have groceries, but food you can eat right there. I've been back since, and both times I had to get some tacos, especially at $1.25 each, and a couple of pan dulce for $0.60/each. I have not been disappointed with anything so far, and plan on returning a lot more.
google avatar

J-Daniel T.

Yelp
Came here looking for some side dishes to make some casero tacos at home, was not disappointed. Found everything we needed and more. Ready made rice, Cactus salad, cactus tortillas, beans and fresh coloradito mole paste. As well as a neat tortilla warmer for small and large tortillas. As far as mexican supermarkets go, this one is on point. With a great selection of meats, produce, candies, tortillas, and of course sweet bread pan dulce. This one has some rare items among those listed above you fail to see in other mercados.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
Wow, this place was awesome. It just opened about 6 weeks ago and they have another store in Hillsboro that has been there for a while. My wife and I were very impressed by the prices, but my favorite part was the wall of meat. They have a huge case that stretches almost the length of the store that is full of all types of meat. We got the ready-to-cook fajitas and I am stoked to cook them up for dinner tonight. This place has everything Mexican food related. It was clean, friendly, and well priced. We will be back for sure.

Rachel G.

Yelp
Best store ever!! Best food ever!! Amazing options. You can get a lot of stuff from Mexico that you can't find in other grocery stores. I can't wait to go back!!
google avatar

Blnde842 L.

Yelp
Even tho I found a short black hair in my tacos I decided to follow thru with at least the other taco after examining it and it was one of the best chicken tacos I've had since I was back in Mexico. The meat market selection here is HUGE as it should be at a Mexican market. Horchata on point. Pricing definitely on point. Mainly Spanish speaking workers with OK English but service is always attentive when I go in. I'd say check em out, there's something for everyone. They also have a fruit cup stand in this market as well(I forget the proper name)
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
The best Mexican grocer and deli I've seen in our area. It reminds me a lot of the Mariana's chain in Nevada. We got to try both the Carnitas and the Al Pastor Tacos there for lunch and both were excellent. We plan to go back and get one of their family-style takeout dinners soon which appear to be a great value.

Yelp
We stumbled in here today while driving down Division: what a pleasant surprise! The giant meat case is full of reasonably priced, tasty items and was decorated with a giant pig's head. We got seasoned boneless/skinless chicken for $2.99 a pound. The sauce by the pound bar is exciting and so are most of the other foods in the case. The employees behind the case were very friendly and cheerful. The store was clean and seemed well stocked. I'm not Mexican, so can't really say if something was missing, but it was a fun little market to go through. The dinner we made was super tasty too. We will definitely be back.
