"If you blink as you’re walking down P Street, you might miss Sura, a basement restaurant in Dupont Circle with a paper-plastered door and some of the best Thai street food in the city. Skip the four-seat bar near the entrance and slide into a half-bench, half-chair table tiny enough to spoon-feed the person across from you (but only if that’s not weird). Your eyes will adjust pretty quickly to the underground lighting and the smooth sounds of American contemporary music will ease you into your seat. The meals are fresh and fast—so fast that you might wonder if they brought you someone else’s dinner by mistake. Fret not, that really is your bowl of steaming spicy belly rice that has been set in front of you. Like all good street food, you start eating with your nose long before you pick up your fork. And while the smells don’t come wafting outside to float you down the dimly-lit hallway like a cartoon character, you will breathe deeply every time something hot is set down. Family-style is the way to go here, so grab a friend or a date and taste your way through the menu. Everything is under $20, so it’s possible to down a few dishes, a couple of drinks, and dessert without breaking the bank. They’re not going to make substitutions (the cucumber belly salad comes with a warning that it is “not recommended for novices”), but you shouldn’t need them since every dish is impressive as is. The exceptions: some dishes can be made meatless and you can ask them to adjust certain spice levels. Sura is worth searching for thanks to its fragrant meals and fast service, so put on your explorer cap and get to work. Even on the most hectic night, you’re unlikely to wait long for your food and the flavors will be bold and bright. The menu at Sura changes frequently, but here are a few examples of the dishes you might find here. Food Rundown photo credit: Reema Desai Calamari While the calamari has a crunchy tempura-esque batter and the squid is the perfect amount of chewy, the real star of this dish is the chili and garlic sauce. The tangy spiced sweetness makes the calamari go from good to irresistible. Don’t be ashamed if you just swig a spoonful of the sauce because we did, too. photo credit: Reema Desai Spicy Belly Rice This bowl lives up to the spice level (it’s not Thai spicy, but has a nice kick) and has a great portion size. They don’t skimp on the ingredients, so you’ll have plenty of belly, basil and chilis to last until your final grain of rice. The pork belly’s rich meaty flavor and the expertly cooked rice are a treat for your mouth. Cucumber & Belly Salad The cucumbers, tomatoes and green beans are crisp and bursting with the freshness that immediately perks up your body. They’re soaked in fish sauce, which is pungent, but not overpowering and the pork belly has the same delicious taste that you’ll find in the spicy belly rice. photo credit: Reema Desai Chicken Himapan Don’t be surprised if you feel like the dish is doing lots of things in your mouth. We loved all the individual elements, from the perfectly fried chicken and light sauce to the cashews and ginkgo nuts, but it all seemed to just be thrown into the bowl. photo credit: Reema Desai Lychee Crème Brûlée This crème brûlée is the kind that anyone would enjoy, even if they don’t like creme brulee. Loaded with chunks of lychee and a perfectly caramelized sugar crust, it’s definitely on the sweet side. Grab a spoon and dig in." - Tristiaña Hinton

I recently dined at Sura Restaurant, a spacious Korean eatery located in the heart of downtown. The restaurant offers plenty of seating, making it a great spot for both casual meals and group gatherings. Craving something warm and comforting, I ordered tteokbokki, sundubu-jjigae, and bibimbap. The tteokbokki had a nice balance of sweetness and spice, with chewy rice cakes coated in a rich, flavorful sauce. The sundubu-jjigae was packed with soft tofu and had just the right level of spice to warm me up. The highlight, however, was the dol-sot bibimbap—a sizzling hot stone bowl filled with colorful vegetables, bulgogi, and a perfectly crispy layer of rice at the bottom. The portions were generous, and the flavors were spot-on, reminding me of home-cooked Korean meals. With its spacious layout and authentic dishes, Sura Restaurant is a solid choice for anyone craving Korean food in downtown. I’ll definitely be back!

Google
Went in for lunch and ordered the Sura lunch combo. A lot of food and all of it was delicious. I was surprised by how much tuna was in the tuna avocado roll I ordered as it’s usually small pieces. As a bonus the food came out very quick. They offer a 5% discount for cash purchases.

Google
food was delicious, service was great. we came in a hour and half before closing and food was just as fresh and delicious as it wouldve been at lunch. the place is beautiful and tiny. its a great atmosphere with a calm vibe while still holding a specific aesthetic to it. Definitely feels like a gatekept place and would recommend it to anyone.

Google
Food was great. Atmosphere was quiet and clean restaurant. Staff is always friendly and attentive.

Google
Excellent food, service and atmosphere. The texture and flavor of the garlic chicken was perfect. Everyone enjoyed the Miso soup, the kim-bap was enjoyable along with the harmony roll, pork belly with kimchi tofu, and Curry Ramen.

Google
The restaurant was clean and quiet. The service was attending and friendly, though mess up our orders couple of time and we had to sent back the food. Curry udon was one of the worive ever tried. It tasted massive curry, seems they dropped the curry bottle in the soup. Ramen udon was ok. The sush was fresh but nothing special at all.

Google
Satisfied a massive Korean and Japanese food craving for our table. Highly recommend the Tteokpokki and Rhode Island Roll.

Yelp
my boyfriend and I love it here - he loves being able to get black bean noodles and sushi from the same spot, and I love watching the sweet servers try to convince him to learn how to use chopsticks the lunch specials are a great deal for anyone thinking about $ but honestlyyyyyy I've always left Sura feeling like my money was well-spent (and I'm a girl who loves to order many dishes)

Yelp
This is one of the few places where the Yelp rating is off the mark for me. I really enjoy the food every time I come in. My most recent visit, I came in with a large party and they seated us right away. As far as I can tell everyone was very happy with their food. Service was a bit slow, but again we came in with a large party at the last minute on a freezing Tuesday evening. I got a bottle of cold house sake, the veg bao buns, and Tteokbokki. Everything was so yummy. I love that they bring salad and the picked veggies for the table. Their Tteokbokki is one of my favorite rice cake dishes out of all the places that offer it nearby. The bao is very large, soft and fluffy, and the inside is so flavorful. Parking can be a challenge for this area, but street parking is definitely possible and there are lots nearby.

Yelp
Decent sushi located in the heart of downtown. I've been here a few times with friends and the food was good. Two of the times we got the love boat with different rolls---yessssss, I 'love' boat with my friends---of course ;) It came with soup and a shared salad for each as well! I will go back again for convenience and would definitely recommend this place to friends. For the prices/quality in general I do prefer some of the other spots in town to really satisfy my sushi hankering. Definitely worth checking out as some of the other menu options also look tasty- I'm wicked curious about their ramen---next time!!!

Mikaela L.

Yelp
A solid 3.5! The meal was good, but I didn't have anything to write home about unfortunately. The appetizers were fried well and had good dipping sauce pairings. The sushi rolls were okay. My biggest issue with the sushi here is that the shrimp tempura is sub par. When in a roll, it isn't crispy and the shrimp is very small, sometimes not filling up every piece of sushi. Given a lot of their rolls have shrimp tempura inside, I was hoping it would be better. The fish quality is good though. The chap chae was also good but could use more flavor. Service was good (food came very quickly), and it is really conveniently located downtown. Prices were very reasonable as well, especially with a 5% cash discount. Overall, a solid spot for a quick meal, but I will be more picky about what I order next time based on what was done well this time.

Hasan K.

Yelp
A colleague and I went to this restaurant on the spur of the moment as we were walking by. It was our first time here. Shortly after we sat down the place filled up. We shared three dishes: shrimp gyoza, a shashimi sampler and a tempura. And a small hot sake. The food was well prepared and quite tasty - it deserves 3 1/2 stars. The check came to $54 without a tip; comparable to other Japanese-Korean restaurants.

Yelp
I have such a deep love for Sura. This place has been my rock since I was in college -- I'd always get the kimchi jiggae on a cold day, jjajangmeyeon for special occasions, and the spicy stir fried udon noodles with seafood for my father. My partner loves their spicy pork bimbimbap. The place is gorgeous inside, the staff are so kind and lovely. I love the cute little bow ties that they staple onto the delivery bags.

Thomas T.

Yelp
The restaurant is located in a nice area with a lot of local shops. Stopped here for lunch and it wasn't too busy and the staff are friendly. They give you banchan with miso soup and other sides. I got the Sura ramen with pork and the broth was decent. The bowl is a generous size with plenty of ramen noodles and a good amount of toppings.

Emma T.

Yelp
Sushi was very mushy. I got the spicy maki and didn't really enjoy it. Their salad was good and so was the banchan (Korean sides). The miso soup was too salty for me. My Fiancé loved the ramen, so I'd probably try that if I returned.

Samantha W.

Yelp
Went here on my one hour lunch break, and if you are near here, check this place out! The restaurant is cozy and open when you walk in with approximately 10 tables and bar seating. The servers are friendly and attentive, always smiling!! The menu is large so there's something for everyone, their prices are great too. My co-workers and I will be back soon!!

Mel N.

Yelp
The food was fresh, service was quick, and the ambiance was cozy. It was a little crowded when we arrived but a table opened up right.

Tess Z.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I stopped in here a couple of weeks ago for a quick lunch between errands and it did not disappoint! We didn't have much time but they sat us immediately and the service was quick and the food was delicious. We were brought miso soup and salad promptly and then ordered sushi for our entrees: sweet potato roll, spicy crab roll, and one other roll I cannot remember but we enjoyed it. If we're in the area again, we will definitely have to stop by. The sweet potato roll is one of the best I've had and I forgot how much I missed that roll.

Tori Jane F.

Yelp
I ordered pick-up from Sura and honestly wish I had just gone in for a sit down dinner instead so I could've ordered so many more things! We just moved from Seattle and we've been looking for a new "go-to" for sushi and Korean...and this is it. We loved every single thing we ordered. Not to mention the space itself was cute (and tucked away on a darling side street) and the staff were incredibly kind when I went in to pick up my food!

Erin H.

Yelp
This was so delicious!! We got the meatiest crab rangoons, the juiciest dumplings, and the most flavorful sushi. Our sushi rolls came with miso soup and a refreshing salad. Our waiters and waitresses were all so nice. We came here on a whim and we're so glad we did!

Angel P.

Yelp
I stopped here for lunch with my partner. We ordered the kim bab, and dudae jjigae hot pot (army stew). The kim bab was good/decent, and pretty big in size. The budae jjigae was overly salty. We also got it with cheese and ramen (additional $2 for each add-on). The budae jjigae was enough for the two of us. The banchan/side dishes were good. The restaurant itself is clean, well decorated and service is good. The website is not updated with their current menu (at least I couldn't find the budae jjigae on their website). They have a pretty big menu.

Victoria K.

Yelp
I stopped here for lunch recently with a colleague. I tried the curry ramen with chicken, which I thought was very tasty, but wasn't quite as impressive as some of the other ramen I've had at other restaurants nearby. Our server barely spoke to us. Just took our orders, didn't really explain anything he was dropping off and never checked on us. Although the food was fine, there are other restaurants in the area with similar menu items where I've generally had better service. I'd say Sura needs to step it up a bit in that arena. I'd possibly give them another shot but with so many other options in the area, it's not really a standout for me.

Lily T.

Yelp
Sushi is edible, everything else tastes bad. Minimal seasoning not in a good way. The food is very mid. I've gotten like 4 different things from her to try and give it a chance but none have been that good. It's a shame because the service is great and the staff are super friendly!

Matthew J.

Yelp
I tried the ramen, bao bun, and the tiramisu. Everything was lacking in flavor. I found a piece of hair that did not belong to me in my ramen. The bao bun was over cooked and dry. The tiramisu tasted like bland vanilla cake with vanilla ice cream.

Jenn M.

Yelp
My colleague and I went to Sura the night before and the service was INCREDIBLE. I had to go back today to grab and go. They are so kind. The food, INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS. Authentic Korean and Japanese cuisine. Ambiance is chill and the music is great. Highly recommend for anyone looking for good eats and a chill vibe.

Claudia Z.

Yelp
A little lunchtime treat for myself during the crazy busy week leading up to Christmas. The meal starts with piping hot miso soup & a sesame ginger salad with any sushi order. I got a sushi & sashimi combo plus a negihama maki (yellowtail & scallions). Large pieces of fish, rice is perfect & you can be in & out in 45 minutes if you are time challenged.

Tamanna G.

Yelp
In love with the food so much as I had to visit them again! Their vegetable croquette's and miso soup are to die for. They also cater to dietary restrictions. The servers are friendly and efficient. Both my visits were pleasant. They have a sushi bar and they also offer build your own roll. Highly recommend for Korean and Japanese dishes. It's a must try if you're in the area. The ambiance is also pretty, the restaurant is well thought. They do have a coat rack. There is limited on street metered parking and there is a parking garage nearby. They validate parking. The overall staff is standoffish but don't let that fool you, the food is delicious. Definitely coming back!

Joey L.

Yelp
Bibimbap and the kimbaps are really good always good quality. Everything is always seasoned very well so nothing bland here!

Maddie E.

Yelp
Food, service, and ambiance were excellent! We got 12 dishes and all came out prompt and super tasty! I was impressed with how flavorful everything was. Are server was so kind and helpful. Also, the seating was super comfortable and the lighting was perfect! We will be coming back every time we are in town.

KhoNy L.

Yelp
Super cute place. Our waitress was so sweet! However, the food fell short. I really wanted to love the food but there just wasn't enough seasoning in everything. Sushi wasn't fresh enough for my liking. Wasabi was lacking the burn. I might be back for the Korean food instead of the sushi.

Richard H.

Yelp
They had a menu with outdated price off of which I ordered. When I asked why I was charged more than I expected, lady proceeded to show me another menu that had a higher price for all items and had a manually written "+2" symbol next to some proteins. I got tofu for bibimbap, and even though the updated menu did not have the "+2" symbol next to it, she argued that it does not matter. Such a strange thing to not own up to one's own mistake when it was brought to attention multiple times throughout our conversation.

Tsolmon T.

Yelp
Lumps of ground beef. Quite sad to be honest. Restaurants are not worth it anymore i guess.

Chelsea S.

Yelp
Was having a bad day so I ordered some take out, the Crab Rangoons were really good (even the orange duck sauce was delicious), the miso soup was yummy but the sushi just wasn't what I expected. The California roll definitely tasted like real authentic crab but the shrimp Tempuras were huge and difficult to eat. The flavor of the California rolls were also fine, nothing amazing. I don't know if I'm just used to the white washed version of sushi but this order wasn't my favorite

Taiylar B.

Yelp
This is my second time trying this place. The first time I went I just got cali rolls. My friend got ramen but was disappointed. I tried it again today and got Cali rolls and the house salad. The Cali rolls were okay but the salad was horrible. It wasn't fresh, had all iceberg lettuce and was disgusting. They should have took it off the bill but of course did not. Service wasn't the best either, I won't be back!

Stella M.

Yelp
I wanted to give 0 star but I can't. I went for pick up and the manager told us to wait outside (not nicely). These two chickens were the only ones that looked normal, so I took a picture of it. They were tough to bite on and tasted like a burn chicken. Also, it was expensive (about $20). The manager was so terrible. She was like I don't care what you need, get out.... She ruined our meal. I don't recommend this place. Food:0/5 service: -100/5 atmosphere: 5/5

Dylan T.

Yelp
Great service and food!!! Highly recommend one of my favorite restaurants in providence

Andrew S.

Yelp
Hardly the best in Korean. More like one of the only. Portions so so, Today my Bim bim bap had a meager amount of rice, the gochujang not spicy, basic veggies but unimpressive. Meat topping was good, but no hardly flavorful. Authenticity seems fading, more Americanized as time move on. Like I said ..so so. Even the kimchi was a little skimpy and not impressive. I told the waitress the amount of rice was skimpy, instead of saying "would you like a little more"? Her reply was, that's how we make it. Well, I've eaten here before, this was skimpy and less than usual but she decided to defend this portion. Hardly Korean hospitality as you would expect, is that asking too much?

Cookie F.

Yelp
The best things I can say about Sura after my first visit are that the restaurant is clean, the menu is expansive (but here, quantity compromises quality), and the water is cold. The food, on the other hand, lacks flavor. The chicken teriyaki (in addition to looking absolutely NOTHING like the photo on the menu) was bland, except for a light sprinkling of pepper. The teriyaki sauce was watery and unimpressive. The soups were thin & portions across the board were rather small. This isn't Korean/Japanese comfort food as I know it.

Sarah Y.

Yelp
I've never been a big fan of bibimbap, but Sura's stone pot bibimbap is simply AMAZING. However I dont recommend their Udon as their soup is way too salty :( They also serve complimentary appetizer (salad and miso soup). Overall, Sura is a bit $ for the food you get

Amber M.

Yelp
After coming back a few more times a few patterns have emerged. Their soups, bibimbap and kimbap continue to be consistently good. Their sushi and other appetizers are hit or miss. The sushis are over sauced and seasoned, not a harmonious delicacy it should be. I ordered a roll with lobster for $17 and I could not detect any lobster. You're better going to Nami for sushi. We also tried their new popcorn chicken and it's like 75% batter. It's crispy and tasty but where's the chicken?? It feels pricey.

Lionel M.

Yelp
Been here twice. The first time I got the ramen and it wasn't to my liking & put me off for a few years. Went back recently and got a Stone Pot Bibimbap: it was pretty good! The restaurant is beautifully designed & everyone was being very hygienic. Masks were worn, & hands were sanitized before approaching out table.

Unhappy G.

Yelp
You suck! Closed @ 9pm?!' Are you kidding me! You must not need the business!Your supposed to close @ 10pm. Plan your food & service accordingly! Very disappointing!

Tina S.

Yelp
We tried this place while a friend was visiting for the day. The establishment is cozy and food was great. I would give this place actually a 3 1/2. They weren't very busy. My husband and our friend ordered beer with our food order. Our food started to come out and they still hadn't received their drinks. We tried to get someone's attention not sure if the person heard us as he kept on walking by. Finally waitress came over and asked how everything was and my husband said we ordered beer. Then waitress remembered and brought them to table. The food is very tasty and made up for oversight on drinks. We ordered the Crusty Roll, Chicken Fried Rice, Veggie Steamed dumplings, and the Spicy maki combo. Will have to give them another chance since food was good.

Francesca S.

Yelp
My husband and I came here to try something different. We absolutely enjoyed our time here! Our server was attentive, answered our questions and were very patient with us as the restaurant was winding down near close. I was happy the server knew every vegan option so I could skip the whole google every ingredient routine I usually have to do. The interior is simply beautiful. Food 10/10. Definitely will be returning!

Jasmine W.

Yelp
Food tastes good. For a Korean menu, lacked flavor and authenticity for me though. Also, a bit unorganized as I went to the bathroom and came back to another person sitting at my table. And then it took the wait team almost 15 min to get me my bill. So ehhhh for me. Not bad, but not great

Bill B.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch for the first time. Was nice. Service was good, but a little slow right at time of opening. Once things picked up another server arrived and things moved quicker. The food was very good. I had the BBQ Spicy Pork Box, with the vegetable steamed dupplings (small) as an apetizer. Didn't really need an appetizer as the Box meal was plentiful for one. But I really wanted to try the dumplings. Glad I did because I enjoyed them.

Rose Q.

Yelp
It's my go to spot for Korean food. The service is so lovely, great food, wonderful presentation, and the portion size is more than enough. I also enjoyed their coconut ice cream. It's such a lovely place to have a meal.

Caroline L.

Yelp
Ordered delivery. Once it was 15 min late, I called and first they said it was waiting for a pickup, then they said it wasn't finished and they needed another 15 min, then they said, actually needed 20 more minutes. I had to cancel the order. They clearly hadn't even started it, since it was only a few sushi rolls. No sorry. They just hung up.

Hael A.

Yelp
Good atmosphere, friendly staff. The food was delicious, and clean. Not too expensive

Sophia P.

Yelp
I love this place! I usually only get pickup orders from here and am always so happy with the food. I love their combo platters and enjoy the complimentary salad and miso soup-- so delish. I dined in person here the other night and loved the service as well. It was a Saturday night so a bit busy but we didn't have to wait very long for the staff to clear a table for us. The staff seem to get along well with each other which is sweet to see-- seems like a family run place with a health work culture.

Xiao T.

Yelp
Came here two weeks ago and the foods was as good as usual. The only thing that I wish it could've change is the portion size on rice that serves with the curry katsu. It's a half full plate of curry that comes it so I would hope it comes with more rice to mix it.

Uyên Phng L.

Yelp
Sura has the best sushi chef in Providence! Everything eaten with rice is amazing, though the ramen does sometimes disappoint me.

J J.

Yelp
Last year this had great tempura. This year they had none. Had little to choose from so o had a tofu hot pot that was ridiculous. About 2 dollars of tofu and two pieces of onion one piece of zucchini and broth had no flavor. So I added soy sauce to add flavor. 20 dollars for really BAD food. Never again for us. Don't waste you money.

Adrianna N.

Yelp
First time here. Customer service was quick and attentive. Place is also very warm and welcoming. As for the food we ordered I def would try again

Lloyd B.

Yelp
I absolutely love sura. They are a little slow for dine in, the the rest of the time they are on point ! The staff is always so friendly. Even with the COVID-19 crisis going on they are still open. I am glad to patronize them they are worth every cent ! Best sushi in PVD hands down. You couldn't pay me to eat anywhere else. The spicy pork bibimbap is to die for. The house salad with the ginger dressing ? Don't get me started ! So good !

Percy B.

Yelp
The Worst Bubble Tea Ever! I was hoping to compare this restaurant's bubble tea with other teas in Providence, but I quickly realized that there was no comparison. First of all, it took the guy ten minutes to make the tea - giving me the impression that this tea was at least going to be decent. It took me one sip to realize that this restaurant was not even in the bubble tea league. They gave me a green liquid that tasted like bubble gum in water. I tried to return it for something else but the owner or head chef was offended - so I left them my $6 as a gift. Do not be deceived by the ambience, the tea is . Thayer Street has a few tea spots that are in a league of their own. As an emerging food critique, I don't think I will order food from here either because good restaurants always have good food - even if it's a simple bubble tea drink.
