Gobi Manchurian was good and my favorite. I like that there are lots of varieties particularly the south Indian and vegetarian menu which makes it more attractive. Rava dosa was good, I was expecting it to be crispy, I wish they had a better chutney quantity as it seemed to be very small. Overall I would definitely recommend people to try south Indian food options here and vegetarians.

Google
Ordered Hyderabadi Paneer biryani, it was awful. Then paneer not marinated and fried, vegetable not sautéed. No flavor in the biryani. Please don’t sell items when you can’t provide the taste of it. It’s a disgrace. I cannot believe I actually spent money and time for this. I would give it 0/10.

Sidrah Ahmad

Google
They sent a paneer dosa - which was just paneer shredded on a dosa, not an any type of masala or anything. They put 4 vada on their menu in uber eats and delivered 3. Sambar was horrible. They sent green chutney - the kind you put on chaat with a dosa and vada and is saying it’s South Indian 🥲 Take your business elsewhere. The lady on the phone defends her food when I called to complain 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Google
One of the places within US where you can get Indian food that really tastes like Indian food. Loved the fast service and friendly welcome. The people are really nice that they even have us a mango lassi as compliment. Yes the place doesn't have done in. But the take outs have enough quantity for the price and tastes awesome. Would strongly recommend this place for people from India visiting town. Others can also try and make the taste of food from here as a baseline for Indian food.

Google
I tried Surya Indian Kitchen and found the food to be flavorful. If you're looking for a good butter chicken or chicken tikka masala they are a good spot to check out. They do not have any seating, so be prepared to take out. Overall, not the best Indian food I've had in the Boston area, but they do offer a fully halal menu and a fairly broad variety of options. I was a bit disappointed by the naan. It may be store bought? I'm not sure, but it didn't taste very fresh and didn't have that fluffiness most fresh naan will have. Either way, a solid place to try!

We ordered food from the Cafe MIT but the food was delivered from Surya’s dosa and cafe. We intentionally skipped this restaurant due to low ratings. Not sure how the order was shifted from Cafe MIT to Surya’s cafe. Both the restaurants are in fact listed in the Uber platform. The food quality is pathetic and we couldn’t tolerate it. We ordered for Sambar rice and what we received was a tamarind water and rice in two separate boxes. I called up the restaurant and the response I received was that’s how the Sambar rice will be prepared, which is quite contradictory to the picture mentioned in their site. The Rava dosa was supposed to be thin but it too thick and looked like prepared with an ordinary dosa batter. Both Sambar and Chutney were too sour. The lassi we ordered was actually the diluted yogurt with a bit of salt. The Panneer Paratha and Carrot halwa seems to be the frozen ones reheated for delivery. The package was appealing, they should invest on improving the quality rather than the aesthetics. We would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Google
I don’t write reviews but this was so bad I had to make an exception. It takes someone really special to make food that’s this easy to make and make it bad. We ordered delivery and it was the worst food we’ve had in our life in any city and country we’ve been to. Anyone making food this devoid of all joy and flavour should feel bad and reevaluate their priorities. In a world where food should not be wasted this had to be discarded promptly and one wouldn’t feel bad because it was inedible.

Google
I stopped in for an impromptu lunch and was greeted with excellent, flavorful and fresh food. I ordered a bunch of food with the intention of trying multiple things and bringing some home and I almost abandoned my plan and devoured all of it on the spot. The food came out quickly and the employees were kind and attentive with helping me parse the menu. The restaurant was clean and comforting. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Well, Surya has reinvented itself yet again! Of course, as a long time customer I had to try their new offerings and report. This time around, Surya have leaned into their heritage and gone completely vegetarian; they are now the only completely vegetarian restaurant in Cambridgeport. My vegan bestie always appreciates the wide selection of offerings when she comes to visit. Adding dosa to the menu may have been their smartest move yet. Dosa Factory in Central Square closed during the pandemic and never reopened. Surya rightly filled in this gap, offering not only dosa but every kind of Indian snack you can imagine. The old menu was mostly filled with heavy foods eaten at a sit-down meal. All the old favorite vegetarian/ vegan entrees are still there, but now you can order much lighter fare like dosa, uttapam, and idly with all manner of toppings and fillings. They've repurposed their small sitting area with hi-top tables and tall bar chairs, making the interior of this little spot more elegant than it's ever been in any iteration since the greasy spoon that was there when I moved here in 2008. Now the space is still welcoming, but more geared toward customers wanting to stop for a yummy snack and continue on your way. The options are a bit dizzying, but Surya did this last time they launched a new menu and seemed to streamline the selection after getting a sense of the most popular items. I've tried a couple of different dosa-- one with the classic Pav Bhaji Masala filling and one with a fave of mine, Baigan Barta. The wetter filling of Baigan Barta did make the dosa soggy and require use of a fork and knife even though I picked up the dosa promptly and I live right around the corner. As the crispiness is one of the elements that make dosa so appealing, I think I will stick more to the classic toppings. But there are so many of them, it will take me a month or two to try them all! I also had a paneer and tomato uttapam, basically an Indian pancake. When breakfast for dinner is on your mind, reach for a yummy uttapam! Both dosa and uttapam come with chutneys and sambar (lentil soup) that's way more flavorful and veggie-packed than Dosa Factory's ever was. It's spicy but not so much that you can't pick up on the umami flavors. The usual desserts like mango lassi and Kheer are still available to cool your palate after the meal. Of course it's all served with Surya's characteristic friendliness and good humor that you'll only find at a family business. I have yet to try the Indian Chinese offerings, but I've heard good things about this fusion cuisine. After I've tried a couple of dishes, I'll post another update!

Yelp
Dosa was ok but need to improve the ambiance quite a bit. Doesn't feel clean. Owner was right there, boasting how this isn't his fulltime gig but just a "timepass". Shows well.

Yelp
Surya Cafe is now the Surya Veg N Dosa- which was a complete surprise to me when I tried to order, and was denied, our usual chicken tikka masala a week or two ago. Being a big fan of the elusive dosa (can't find this in too many places in Cambridge), I had to try this out. I ordered the Baighan Dosa and added on two plain vada to go. First on the new packaging, which I LOVE- I was honestly excited to tear open the cloth and paper bags to get to the yumminess inside. As another reviewer had commented, the dosa was no longer crispy as it had been sitting in its own condensation for a few minutes so I was fully expecting that- maybe some venting from the cardboard box could have helped. Flavor was okay though. I had expected a Baighan Bharta type flavor in the filling but this wasn't as sweet, but still okay. The chutney and sambar were okay too, more chili sauce than sambar but I quite liked it. The Vada - texture was on point- crispy yet fluffy. Flavor-wise I've had better (but in Malaysia! where Indian eateries are ubiquitous- so maybe an unfair comparison). Website is a bit confusing and hard to go right to the dishes I'm looking for; love the pictures but would be easier if they recategorized (or relabel categories), and dishes were in a bullet list. All in all, a satisfying meal and will be back to try other dishes. May also try eating there next time now that they have a few high top tables which look really fun.

Yelp
This is a ham-handed marketing exercise masquerading as a restaurant, an end-to-end charlatan from the way it presents itself on its website, to what ends up on your plate: - not a single one of the photos on surya's website, which the owner has apparently posted here on yelp as well, is of its own food. A fraction of them have creative commons licenses but the vast majority are stolen from recipe websites and food bloggers, including some fledgling ones that do not yet have much of a following. (Right click and search with google lens to see for yourself). Utterly reprehensible behavior on the part of the owner, who will probably end up blaming the contractor they hired to develop their website, as if it could not be more obvious at first glance. In hosting these photos, Yelp itself is taking part. - the food we got last night ranged from bad to pedestrian, and needlessly to say not a single item resembled the photos on the website: 1. (2/5) Podi Idli. The idli had a loose consistency and the podi was flavorless. 2. (1/5) Rava masala dosa. The dosa was completely soggy. It is understandably difficult to do takeout dosa properly but when your entire operation is take out (Surya has no dine-in) you really ought to have this figured out. Madras dosa co. does this far more effectively. 3. (1/5) Curd rice. This is supposed to be yogurt and rice with some garnishes. What we received tasted like equal parts sour cream, yogurt, rice, and cucumbers, and was excessively seasoned. 4. (3/5) Methi paratha. This was fine. It would be hard to get this wrong, especially if you are reheating from frozen (which Surya almost certainly does, considering the sheer size of their menu and how quickly they turn out the food). 5. (3/5) Mango lassi. Came bottled, presumably not made in-house. 6. (2/5) Salt lassi. Came bottled, presumably not made in-house. 7. (4/5) Healthy sprout salad. This was very good! 8. (1/5) Maharani bhindi masala. Mostly sauce, very little okra, and (again, unsurprisingly, given all the theft) bearing little resemblance to the photo on the website. 9. (1/5) Chole palak. Very saucy, not much in the way of chole or spinach flavor. - I do not normally complain about food prices but it is incredibly expensive. $16 for a soggy dosa. $18 for sour cream and curd rice. $12 for reheated paratha. $6 for bottled lassi. $21 for goopy okra. - I have to assume that at least part of the explanation for the priciness is all the cash that they've plowed into branding and packaging, which are both elaborate and bizarre. The bags the food came in featured comic depictions of white people in traditional Indian clothing emblazoned with United States flag patterns which ... I'm assuming is supposed to mean something? See the photos. - The restaurant appends a few nonsense words at the end of the name of each dish, as if to give them each a sense of "Indian flair". Very few of them make a damn bit of sense -- "Stuffed aloo tikki puducherry"? Puducherry has nothing to do with that dish. "Masala dosa (potato) Super Machi"? Super machi is a Telegu film that has nothing to do with the dish. An entire section is called "Indian Chinese - Chin Chin Choo", the latter bit of which is, I guess, both an old Bollywood song and a a bit of Global South-South racism. Since neither the restaurant nor Yelp has bothered to address the way that Surya has stolen other creators' images and content for commercial purposes I thought I would add annotate some of the photos with their original sources.

Yelp
Pav Bhaji dosa, that's it, delicious delicious Very nicely packed meal Well delivered

Raya D.

Yelp
This is how you ruin an excellent restaurant. I wish them all the best--but they had a tremendous panjabi-style menu, and now it's all a bunch of fried, OVERPRICED street food. The food is heavily fried; some of it is pre-frozen and not tasty at all. I inquired about what they use as a meat substitute, and they gave me various answers. I ordered the biryani and chicken seekh kebab for takeout. The chicken was not chicken, and the menu does not indicate it is a meat substitute. Not a dine-in spot, just a take out of the overpriced restaurant with a lengthy menu.

Kanwal C.

Yelp
Frozen food. They heat it up and put it in plastic utensils for dine in. So much wastage of plastic. Any hot food in melting plastic is an issue. Food taste is average

Yelp
One of my favorite places for takeout after moving to Cambridge. Their combo meals are such a great deal, $15 for 2 smaller entrees, rice and naan! So affordable and delivers so well. It lasts me 2-3 meals without trying. The curries has a slight spice to it. I'm obsessed with the saag paneer.
google avatar

Emiliana O.

Yelp
Food was very yummy and was ready fast! Good portion sizes for the prices, just wish the naan bread was a little bigger
google avatar

Yelp
Food was good, especially the butter chicken which tasted like they used tender dark meat in the sauce. The Chana masala was great vegetarian option too. Garlic bread great too. Only downside is that's it is take out only. Dining in not available.
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
They don't have any pizza there even though there's an announcement there. SCAM. The other foods there are good, but I don't like this bait-and-switch tactic.
google avatar

Noshii R.

Yelp
Great food, if you order on the phone and provide distinct directions. If you order online (which theoretically makes their lives easier) you will be paying a $1/per dish--yeah that makes no sense to me. The goat curry and chicken seekh kebab are excellent. The daal is hit or miss and the garlic is not that good. Great spot for take out and they can make the food to your liking, i.e. spice level...but its best to call in the order.

Lan L.

Yelp
Good Coconut Fish Curry and Goat Curry. Very spicy goat curry, even when selecting medium spice level; will go for mild next time. Portions on the smaller side. No available seating inside, only a pickup counter. Beware of the price difference when ordering takeout (pickup option) by phone or walk-in vs ordering on their website. Of course there is even higher markup when ordering on food delivery apps.
google avatar

Sair G.

Yelp
this is the first time I've ever had Indian food that I wouldn't even finish eating. Everything was fine, passible, edible, except the saag paneer. I think I got down two or three bites. The combination of flavorlessness and paste-like texture. it was that dreaded leftover dish that sits in the fridge until you simply have to throw it out because now it's moldy. All that said, the pakora was truly excellent: unusually flavorful and perfectly fried.

Sadie S.

Yelp
I love Surya! Such delicious flavors and really good bang for your buck. The employees are friendly and the food is ready quickly. Also you get a free mango lassi if you spend $30 which is a such a sweet perk. I probably get takeout from here at least once a week. Could not recommend highly enough.

Tian L.

Yelp
It's Large potion size for women, tasty and value for money , love mango juice and many sweets choices
google avatar

Gautham D.

Yelp
Ordered on Uber eats a few times. Here we Pros: chicken Tikka is good unlike the usual bland Boston spices it's actually pretty close to dhaba in india. Goat curry is decent can't complain Other curries are decent to mediocre but definitely better than the normal fake Indian food around the Boston area Desserts: Desi Gajar Halwa and Ghee Jalebi are fresh but it's inconsistent Cons: Rotis are not good just plain awful, Really need to add salt to the kebabs. The presentation is so nice but season the damn meat. All in all a decent place

Yelp
We ordered dinner from this place and the food was great!! I will visit the restaurant next time

Yelp
This is my go to spot. Always consistent, good food and great service. Haven't gone wrong yet on the menu.

Josh T.

Yelp
Favorite spot for Indian (takeout - don't think they have tables inside anymore). Great food and great value, especially the combos. Excellent vegan and vegetarian options, aloo baingan is one of my favorite Indian dishes ever and I feel like I could eat the daal tarka every meal and never get sick of it. Naan is fluffy and delicious. Saag paneer is the best in the area by far. Aloo gobhi, chana masala, daal makhani are honorable mentions. Friends say the chicken tikka masala is very good. Dishes are excitingly spiced and very flavorful.

Yelp
Absolutely top notch! These guys are great. The restaurant is rather small and unimpressive, but the food is fantastic. (Tip: Order carry-out, don't plan to eat at the restaurant!) This quickly became my go-to carry-out Indian restaurant when I lived in Cambridge. Service is remarkably fast, and as others have noted, the portions are generous. Their food is easy for sharing, and there are several combo options that allow you to sample several meat or veggie dishes. For the days when we were looking for comfort food we ordered chicken tikka masala, lamb korma, and chana masala. Even though I moved away, I have yet to find another take-out Indian restaurant I like more and still will make the trip up to Cambridge for this. Check them out!

Sharon A.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food, friendly staff, and plenty options for different dietary preferences. This has become a weekly dinner for us, when we get a break from cooking. I highly appreciate that they clearly mark the gluten free /vegan /nuts etc. (I wish all restaurants catch up on this!). Our absolute favorites are: vegetable pakora, Chana masala (amazing!), chicken tikka masala, aloo ghobi and Baingan Bharta.
google avatar

Ellie L.

Yelp
Inexpensive and large amount of food. Not the most refined or best tasting, but fantastic price to quality ratio. I order from there regularly.

laura n.

Yelp
Take out only these days with Covid, but this place is exceptional. I picked up the chicken vindaloo today, and it was out of this world. I will be getting lunch here at least once a week.
google avatar

carol s.

Yelp
Friendly people, and I like that it's a neighborhood place. However, tonight we ordered saag paneer--and there was virtually no paneer in it. Just 2 small cubes. The spinach was fine, but we really missed the cheese. It's too bad; we will probably not go back.

Anna B.

Yelp
A solid local takeout-only joint with an extensive menu, options for just about every special dietary need, and exceptionally kind, friendly customer service. These folks clearly care a lot about what they do. On our first visit, we asked "what's good," and the butter chicken did not disappoint. The sag paneer was good, too, and the mango lassi was excellent and didn't skimp on the mango juice. Classic Indian restaurant flavors: not particularly unique or exciting, just really good, well-prepared comfort food that should appeal to a wide variety of tastes - and totally worth the visit for the comfy, neighborhood vibe.

Yelp
4 stars for delivery service, one star goes solely to the relatively quick drop off and the food arriving warm. The driver was courteous to call and text me and left the food with my front desk at my office as requested. I ordered the Hyderabadi chicken biryani, and the vegetable chicken combo with chicken vindaloo and paneer tikka masala. Portions are so generous! The chicken biryani was about $11 and huge enough for two people to eat generously. Same goes for the combo it was $10-$11 and the portions of each dish and rice could absolutely feed 2 people. They also include a little tub or raita and two warm pieces of a wheat bread I am assuming is like a chapati smothered in butter and they were DELICIOUS. These people really know how to make chicken biryani, fragrant, flavorful, spicy as requested with lots of chicken. I would recommend this to anyone. Also the paneer tikka masala was dynamite. I felt like the cheese was fresh and soft and had a nice cheesy flavor to it. Not hard or bland like a lot of other places. The tikka masala it was cooked in had a strong tomato base and was delicious if you like that. The chicken vindaloo was a disappointment. There was a lot of curry but I didn't notice potatoes in mine. Also very few pieces of meat. I would skip on this dish as it doesn't compare or hold the flavors of a true vindaloo dish. Over all I would order delivery from here again! Plenty of leftovers now ;)

zoheb a.

Yelp
love this place the food is very good and the staff is incredibly friendly. i recommend the biryani, very tasty.

Yelp
I came to this eatery for lunch. The dining area was small with few desks. There were only plastic cutlery and plates, and no water. The kitchen apparently do catering and delivery as well. I ordered Beef Hyderabadi Biryani, one of the chef's specials, and I have to say that I was not impressed: it was a bit bland to me.
google avatar

Edgar A.

Yelp
Food is tasty but too heavy on the oil. Portions are generous.
google avatar

Trevor W.

Yelp
In my opinion this is the best Indian food in Boston. Super nice guys - all of the typical dishes I like (chicken tikka, saag paneer) are very good but also I have tried random entrees and they have been great. Awesome garlic naan, perfect lassis- not too sweet- and legit deserts. Can't go wrong.
google avatar

Vinh N.

Yelp
A big fan of this takeout joint. I came to eat in its small dining space and was pleasantly surprised at the combo I had ordered. Each portion was individually packaged in resealable plastic containers rather than the styrofoam and good sized for the price at 10.25. As for the taste, my baigan bharta was smoky excellent while you can taste the slight bitterness of the spinach in the saag paneer which I prefer over a version overwhelmed by the cream and paneer.
google avatar

Angela C.

Yelp
Their chole bhatura is the best I've ever had. My boyfriend said his goat curry was divine.
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
It took us a while to find an Indian Spot we liked when we first moved here but this is our "go-to" now. The guy that runs it is great and so is the food. We LOVE the chicken Korma and Butter Chicken Masala. Literally the best Indian we've found in Boston and trust me, we've looked!
google avatar

C S.

Yelp
Guys! This place, guys! Great quality, great prices, great portions! Large range of options! I couldn't be happier. We ordered delivery via GrubHub (2nd time, I believe) and dinner was awesome! We are obsessed with their chicken and paneer tikka marsalas, paneer saag and warm, fresh naan. I had this place a while back at least once and didn't remember the name, so had been trying other places in the meantime to see which it was (from time to time), but finally found them again! This will now be my one and only Indian spot when we're craving flavorful and fresh food and awesome prices! Nom-nom forever!!! [[Virtual fist bump]] ***Confession: This is actually a review more for me to help me remember this place than to give you advice, but, hey... feed two birds with one scone! Lol

Eddy R.

Yelp
Delightful man named raj helped me and my grandma with a splended butter chicken with garlic nan and amazing mango lassi

Momo C.

Yelp
If you're looking for amazing Indian food there's no need to look any further. The butter chicken masala was outstanding. The chicken is tender and flavorful and the sauce mixed beautifully with the chicken. One bite into the samosas and you'll taste all the amazing flavors they put into it. The mango lassi was out of this world. It was extremely creamy and sweet, it's definitely one of those drinks you wish you got an extra of! A man named Raj was working and he was so helpful with everything and was extremely kind and patient. Will definitely make this my go-to Indian food!
google avatar

Dom J.

Yelp
I had the lamb vindaloo with basmati rice and garlic naan. I ordered delivery and was shocked by the speed! The lamb was tender, but I felt that the spice overwhelmed the actual flavor, and I asked for the milder option. The rice was good, and the naan was excellent. Great portion size. Would definitely order again.

Paul L.

Yelp
Yummy neighborhood indian food. Great bang for your buck and really nice service. Definitely worth a try!

Yelp
As a vegetarian, I'm confused by this (generally decent) restaurant... Surya Kitchen is a rather average take-out/delivery Indian restaurant (with a very small, rustic dine-in area) near MIT. At the restaurant, food is served in a slew of plastic containers (each items individually packed), with plastics forks, plastic water bottles (no other option), etc. I was amazed by all of the waste. I get it--not everyone is an environmentalist, but geeez. It's like they bought stock in a plastic corporation. The food is par, with affordable prices and good service. Get delivery or take-out only, and fill up your recycle bin.

Henry S.

Yelp
This place is a gem ! I have struggled for years now to find good Indian food in Boston after many restaurants either closed or lowered their quality. Although unassuming in appearance , all the food I've tried tastes authentic and rich and textured in flavor. You can tell they grind their own spices and their dishes are made From scratch. Especially the samosas, whose pastry shell is wonderfully flaked and the curry flavor vibrant. A great go to on any night of the week

Sourobh G.

Yelp
Consistently great. The chicken baigan butter masala is a personal favorite. Can't recommend this place enough
google avatar

Tricia P.

Yelp
Our little hidden gem. We're so happy to have this a couple blocks from our place. Amazing Indian- reliable, delicious and reasonably priced. Our go to dishes are: spicy goat, chicken tikka masala, saag paneer and shrimp korma. You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Olivia D.

Yelp
The food at this restaurant is sooooo good. Definitely the best Indian food around the neighborhood! When you go pick up the food they are always so friendly and offer a free drink with your order. The food is always on time and ready fast, so it has become my go-to for late nights where I'm studying or in class and don't have time to cook. My favorite local place for takeout.

Yelp
Surya is one of my go to spots when I don't have any idea what to cook for dinner. I love their daal, chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, chana masala, and of course the garlic naan. Not only is the food delicious, but then men who work there are so kind and offer the best service! I live near a few different Indian restaurants but Surya is always the one I choose. Definitely check it out!

Yelp
This is our favorite place for vegetarian Indian food in Cambridge, hands down. The food is fresh and tastes great. I always get the vegetarian combo ($10.95 for two dishes plus naan or roti) with chana masala and baingan bharta, and the baingan bharta is probably the best I've ever had. You can really taste how they roast the eggplant over a fire, and it's silky and smoky and delicious. Samosas are well-fried and the samosa chaat is really good. Food is always ready within the 15 minutes it takes to walk from my house to the restaurant, and the people who work there are so kind! They always offer a free mango lassi if we order above about $25, which is thoughtful.
