11 Best NYC Restaurants for Sake and Seafood Pairings | Eater

"Tucked away in a basement in TriBeCa, Sushi Azabu has been quietly serving up some of New York’s best omakase menus since 2015. Head chef Hayashi Tomoyuki makes the tasting menu extra-special with options like the splurgeworthy toro (fatty tuna) and uni tasting, while interjecting fun dishes like foie gras chawanmushi or shirauo (ice fish) tempura into the a la carte menu. Ask the chefs for a paired flight of sake based on your choice of fish for the evening, and if you haven’t had enough sake by the end of the meal, you can also opt for their delectable sake cheesecake for dessert." - Vox Creative

I went for the 4900 yen lunch set which is really affordable for omakase - but do note that it isn’t as filling as a normal omakase meal. We walked out feeling 50% full. The service was also overall friendly and nice but we noticed that only one chef spoke English and was more friendly with the tourists. Not faulting the other chef but we happened to be seated in front of him, so there was minimal interaction. The fish was extremely fresh and although other reviews have complained about the acidity of the rice, I felt that it paired nicely with the fish and temperature of the rice. Please book in advance as we saw multiple people try to walk in but there were no spots available.

Sushi Azabu offers an intimate Omakase experience with the chefs preparing each piece of sushi directly in front of you. The sushi was incredibly fresh, with high quality ingredients that melted effortlessly in the mouth. The chefs took care with every detail and explained each dish as it was served. The balance of flavour and texture was excellent throughout the meal. A lovely dinner and one that I would gladly return for.

Loved the sushi and sake selection, the atmosphere was really nice although we would have liked to talk to the chef more then a few words. It was a really nice omakase and fairly priced at lunch time (4.800 per person). Reservation is strongly recommended :)

We got a reservation a month prior for their weekday lunch. The lunch omakase is 4800. For the quality, it is very worth it. Each of the nigri was fresh and divine. Would strongly recommend

Worst meal I had in the entire trip. The fish was not fresh, the rice tastes sour and not good and the overall experience was bad. I ordered a place in advance to get a place in the counter but was seated in a table in a small room and not part of the omakase experience itself. Funny to see the second table was seated with another non japanese couple while the entire counter was filled with locals. Do yourself a favor and just don’t go there.

We visited Sushi Azabu to celebrate our anniversary and it was the best sushi we’ve ever tasted. The lunch menu is a perfect way to try omakase at a reasonable price. Everything about this experience was perfect, starting from the staff’s attention to details to the dishes presentation and skills of our chef. My favourite pieces were the sesame tofu, lime infused nigiri, and the medium-fatty tuna nigiri. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone visiting Tokyo and wanting to try omakase.

I only took one photo because I was too busy enjoying the experience to take more. We went out to celebrate here and our server Nobuyuki made it an exceptional experience. As a pretty bland American who eats sushi once every few years, I actually thoroughly enjoyed almost everything they made here!

By far the best sushi I've ever had in my life! The fish was incredibly fresh and tender! What an experience😍
