The food is delicious. The people are nice. The ambience is very chill and hole in the wall. I just wish their menu was up to date! The prices online were wrong, and many of the items on the online menu are discontinued. Then having this explained was a bit confusing, too. But I would go back here. I wish i could give it 4.5 stars because everything else was good.

This restaurant has top quality and tastes.Korean traditional side dishes are just perfect seasoned. I’ve been looking for this kinds of dishes for a quit long. Small spaces but got taste. Recommend to try at least once.

Just a few minutes ago, I walked into this establishment with a desire to order Korean barbecue. When I approached the front desk there was no one at the register. After waiting about 35 seconds a woman with a very disgusting disposition emerged from the kitchen with an unforgiving scowl on her face. I started to ask her for a menu and she swiftly cut me off and told me with her finger “ we don’t serve sushi”. I then told her I didn’t ask for sushi, I was asking for the menu. She replied “we only have Korean” while handing me the menu. I kindly gave her the menu back and told her I was no longer interested because of the bad attitude and service. I would never recommend anyone stepping into that restaurant.

But they do not sell sushi. If you like Korean food then this is the place for you. If you are looking for sushi then search around

The last review is a year and a half old, so I thought I'd give an update: Yes, it's true--a place called "Sushi Box" does not serve sushi of any kind. Upon entering, my friends and I were notified by the hostess/server "No sushi, only Korean". We decided to stay anyway, and were glad we did. The spicy pork dish was excellent and the portion size was huge. It was also served with many separate garnish plates. My friend tried the lunch tuna bowl and said it was good as well. If you are looking for good Korean food, this place is hard to beat. But beware--the name is completely misleading!

Hwe dup bap was as good as everyone else's reviews. Lots of sashimi. Also had some octopus pieces. Veggies are chopped very finely, which I liked. Definitely low on rice, but I'm totally fine with low carbs. Portion is slightly smaller than other Korean places. Tonkatsu was also good. For the price, they do give you multiple pieces of pork. Liked the portion size. Generous with the sauce, too. It comes with miso soup and a bowl of white rice. Banchan were okayish. We liked the seaweed. The fishcakes were a bit dry. They didn't actually give us napa kimchi, which is a first for us at a Korean establishment. Did not get sushi because of the reviews here.

I went in Nader the pretense this was a Japanese restaurant? Oh hell no!! So the menus are random signs on the wall not in English! They don't serve any sushi of any sort! They mainly serve Korean dishes. Which makes no friggin sense! A place called sushi box that no longer serves sushi?!? They stopped serving sushi roughly 2 years ago when the pandemic started and don't have the staff to serve sushi?! Then change the damn name!

Hwe Du Bap ROCKS MY WORLD! Wonderful variety of veggies and fish. I typically ask for only salmon and octopus, which they will do for you. I drive hours to get this dish! Crazy foodie here! Of course, I make a pit stop at H-Mart too, just down a block!

Thanks to all the Yelp reviews, I knew exactly what I was going to order when I stopped by Sushi Box for dinner last night. I completely agree with people who've mentioned that their hwaedupbap (Korean version of sashimi over rice) is probably the best in town. I was very pleased with the amount of sashimi in the bowl, along with very fresh veggies, and other tasty toppings. There was very little rice, which I actually preferred, so the flavors of the fish and toppings were very distinct. On the outside, Sushi Box, looks kind of like a hole-in-the-wall type of place. The location is small in size, but don't let the size of the restaurant fool you. They have a large menu of several yummy offerings, including Japanese and Korean food. I was absolutely pleased that the sashimi bowl came along with a bowl of miso soup and Korean side dishes. Service was overall great and friendly. If you're looking for a good value and great hwaedupbap ($13.99) in the area, check out Sushi Box! There is limited amount of parking in front of the strip mall.

Under new ownership.... what a huge disappointment. Been picking up lunch from here for over a year. Delicious and good portions. Under new management... My chicken teriyaki bento box is missing teriyaki sauce. Rice portion has been reduced by more then half. No more spicy tuna rolls, all replaced by cheaper California rolls, and barely enough dressing to cover 1/4 of the salad. My brother's tonkatsu is missing donkatsu sauce! Really sad I won't be going back. Worst part was when these issues were addressed the new owner showed absolute no interest to rectify the issue.

I really enjoyed eating here! Unexpected ban chan and everything was super fresh! The enormous bowl of rice, lettuce, and raw fish (like poke only kinda different) was tasty and had a ton of fish in it. The dinner box had sooo much tempura and the salmon was not overcooked!

I went to the bar. The owner said to sit at a table. I picked a table. The waitress comes over and said go to a smaller table. It had the SAME amount of seats! But I went. Im sitting at the table for 7 minutes with my order on paper and with NO water. Im really thirsty and Im waiting for my order to be taken. This is a VERY small place. I was looking at my clock. TEN F-ing minutes... nothing. I got up and left. Also note that the place wasnt busy at the time. There was one table of 6. Thats it. Worst service Ive had in years. I havent gotten up and left in YEARS.

I ordered grubhub pick up here a couple of months ago and thought the rolls were average at best. They were definitely small, and I preferred bigger rolls for more price than these tiny ones. I also had a chicken teriyaki lunch box, and the chicken in it was overcooked and rubbery on the edges and smelled a bit like old grease oil, so it was not too enjoyable. The thing that miffed me most on my first try here, was the shitty soy sauce. It seemed like they might've made a mistake and given me some kind of dark soy or something though, but the soy sauce was really viscous and had no flavor except staleness. Another time, I was in the area with errands and hungry again so I stopped by here for quick meal - a bento box dinner with grilled mackerel. Everything just felt like it was made really haphazardly, but for the variety I didn't mind. Just y'know... mackerel was a little dry, tempura a little greasy still, the sushi with it wasn't amazing quality... But I will say that the best thing about this place is the Korean side dishes you get even with your Japanese entrees and sushi :D Very unique, and I love even more variety on top of what you get. I'm pretty sure most places don't do that, and I love it. Would come for a quick, lighter lunch/meal in the area, especially if I'm not feeling picky, but not much beyond that.

Pretty decent Korean and Japanese food. I tried the salmon teriyaki / donkatsu bento box and sampled from the dwenjang jjigae (Korean miso soup), soon dubu (soft tofu soup), and the godeunguh gui (grilled mackerel). The food didn't really leave me with a good or bad impression they were just solidly average. I liked the california rolls in the bento box the best. The service is a little slow as it is a mom and pop run restaurant.

Had hoedupbop (sushi rice bowl with veggies) twice for lunch.. So far so good. Decent amount of sushi, fresh veggies with ssangkumy spicy sauce.

Working in the restaurant industry, I feel that consistency towards all customers is important. I noticed that my father and I got less side dishes compared to other groups and we asked why and they said it's because of why we ordered. We ordered a Korean version of a chirashi. One of the more expensive items on the menu. Then the server said it's because our dish has a lot of vegetables in it. My family has been coming here for 5+ years but once the owner changed, the service went downhill.

I decided to come back here because I couldn't forget how tasty the Daegoo Maewoontang was.

I enjoy the sides (the fish cakes are great) but you don't always get the same ones. The sushi itself isn't my favorite in the area, the rice is a bit sweeter than I like it. Still, great cost, though if I could just get the cucumbers side, the potato side and the fish cakes (the lovely lovely fish cakes) as a separate meal I'd be all about it.

Personally, their hoedeopbap is the best around the area. You can't find the perfect ratio anywhere else in the area. However, if you plan on eating sushi, I would personally go somewhere else. Their side dishes are great. Friendly-staff and great service. I would recommend hoedeopbab and shrimp tempera!

Sushi Box is a Japanese restaurant with a Korean twist. I think I come here with my family every time I'm in town. Ok, let's put it out there, this place is located in a run down strip mall. The inside is really quaint and "charming" as we all know what that really means. Despite that, everytime I come in, it feels very warm and comfortable. The owner and his wife (who are Korean, not Japanese) know us after all these years and know exactly what we like to order. There's a spicy fish soup, mae-oon tang, that my dad always gets. It usually take a while to prepare so the moment the waitress (owner's wife) sees us come in, she asks if we'd like to put in the order of the mae-oon tang so the food comes out all together in a timely manner. Because my family are regular customers of this place, we usually get a complimentary bottle of hot sake with our meal. My favorite thing to get is the hwe-dup bap, which is like a mixed rice bowl with sushi, lettuce and hot sauce. You can't go wrong with this. It's a Korean dish, so you can't order this at any Japanese restaurant. They also offer bento boxes as well where you can order chicken/salmon/beef teriyaki, donkatsu or even bulgogi. To be honest, the sushi isn't the prettiest I've had, but it's still good. After the entree, they give you a rice porridge soup dish, the perfect ending to a great meal. This is definitely not the type of place you'd come to for a date or a huge get together (although my dad and a bunch of his tennis buddies come here a lot). It's more of a place you'd go to with your family or a friend or two. The prices are very reasonable compared to most sushi restaurants. Don't let the outer appearance deter you, it's definitely worth a trip.

There are two tv's in the restaurant, so there is always some noise in the background. Like most japanese restaurants, you can get a good japanese bento box for a decent price. Sushi Box also gives you the little korean style appetizers with whatever you order. So, if you asked me to choose between Sushi Box and Ma Noo Ben, I would go with Sushi Box because it's a little bit cheaper. 10/6/09 ADDITION TO REVIEW: I took my parents to this place a few weeks ago, and they really enjoyed it. My dad and girlfriend got the Sushi Box special, which was sashimi, tempura, hot soup, and grilled fish for $20. You have to order at least two orders (presumably because you share the fish and hot soup). It was a pleasant surprise because everyone at the table was able to enjoy the soup and fish. Who should go to Sushi Box: people looking for a simple japanese meal at a decent price Who should not go to sushi box: those who want an upscale dining experience un-disturbed by the baseball game blaring on the TV above-head

Tasty place, esp with all the little appetizer salads that they give you for free! Only caution, I usually order the salmon and I keep forgetting that they automatically add wasabi to the roll...not sure if they do this with all rolls, but its worth a check...messes with my experience every time...though it is my own fault for forgetting...

Of all the Korean joints in northbrook/glenview/niles, this is my fave. Spicy octopus bibimbap is the bees knees. The place is really small be selfishly don't ever want them to get super busy. But it is a hidden gem for sure.

This is hard review to write. Yes, it is small place, and yes, sushi is inexpensive and definitely mediocre. What I like there are korean appetizers, plus korean dishes. I particularly like hoidup bap: sashimi style fish, vegetables over rice. Delicious! Korean owned, and very good value. I would go for sushi elsewhere, say Blufish or Wildfish.

Don't let the exterior of this restaurant fool you. Their food is amazing and their prices are even better. I got a hwedupbop (spicy sushi rice bowl) off the lunch special and it was sooo much food for just $9.99! It was so big you could probably share it with another person and still be full. Their banchans were various and delicious, which was also a plus. The service was very good but I was there at a slow time so I'm not sure how it would be if it were busy. All in all, I will be coming back for their lunch specials very soon.

Sushi Box is my all-time favorite Korean-owned sushi restaurant. It's a really tiny place, but the food is superb. Not only they serve sushi, but they also serve Korean food. I remember when I came here during NYE, and the owner was being so generous and kept giving us a bunch of complementary dishes - grilled fish, some rolls, Korean pancakes, side dishes, and etc. Their rolls and sashimi are always fresh and delicious. I recommend calling them to order for a pick-up instead of eating in.

Was there once and was surprised with number of complimentary Korean appetizers they bring with your order. Place is really small but food was really good. Rolls are small but their prices are even smaller so you cannot complain. If your regular meal is 2 rolls just take 3 and you will have enough and still pay much less then somewhere else. Our server was very attentive and friendly. I gave the place 4 stars because its not fancy at all. But quality of food is very good and prices are very reasonable. The only problem - they're closed on Sunday. But looks like it's a true family restaurant where husband is a chef and wife is a server. So you cannot expect them to work 24/7.

This place was awesome!!!!! I loved the service and sushi. We ordered some raw fish and rolls. As good if not better than what we're used too in SoCal.

Decided to try Sushi Box because it was close to the Glenview Wyndham and the other Yelp reviews said that it was less expensive than other sushi restaurants in the area. The reviews turned out to be true. Most of the sushi maki (or sushi rolls) were under $5 with the fancier rolls around $7. The GF and I each ordered the sushi maki combo which included 4 rolls for $13 and a small order of sashimi. Everything was fresh and tasted great. The sushi rolls were slightly small, but the waiter brought out miso soup and several side dishes for free. Overall, Sushi Box has great sushi for the price.

This is a delightful and authentic Japanese restaurant. Fresh fresh fresh sushi and delicious meals. Inexpensive and exceptional. It's a small place, though, so you may have to wait a bit during busy times.

Went there for the first time to pick up lunch. I specifically asked for separate orders, as I was ordering for co-workers. Talking to the guy on the phone was quite something, even though im not reviewing his accent. A co-worker and I get there. Gives me the whole total, and I say to him how I had told him that we wanted it separate. He says something in his language and gives me a dirty look and tells me to step over to the cash register. The actual transactions go fine. But half way thru as my coworker is going thru our food, she says we didn't get spicy mayo for each order. We I did tell him that's what we wanted on the phone. He says he put some so we can all share. The amount he gave us can barely share 2 people. We were FIVE! We ask him for more which we kept telling him we are willing to pay, but no, he keeps complaining that what we have is enough. Finally after arguing, he gives us the same amount in another container. We gave up. We took it grabbed our food and left. NEVER GOING BACK THERE AGAIN! THE QUALITY OF FOOD SUCKS...BUT U GET WHAT U PAY FOR. ITS CHEAP. IF YOU WANT GOOD SUSHI FROM THE AREA...GO TO BLUFISH IN GLENVIEW!

We ordered hwaedukbab, tempura udon, and don katsu. Hawedukbab is amazing. I think it's the best hawedukbab you can find in Illinois. Tempura udon had nice broth. I would definitely order these two again. Don katu is okay. Not amazing. But overall, great!!!

I have been this place for five times. Whenever I went this place to have sushi, my husband get sick from the food for some reasons. We thought it might be caused by other reasons but it was not. If you are see the reviews below you can understand what I am talking about. Sushi is not fresh at all.if you try out for the korean food, it will be okay. That's why I gave them 2 stars instead of 1 star but if you want to go to try for Sushi, it will be wasting money.

Very generous with the Korean appetizers. Get a box - the salmon teriyaki is delicious and tender, the bulgogi is so flavorful. The sushi is fresh and tasty, not mind-blowing but just fine. We tend to come at kind of off-peak times so the fact that there's only the one waitress doesn't usually make a problem, although I could see it becoming one during rush time. Overall a fine, non-threatening kind of place.

Had lunch here the other day with my wife. Was crowded on a Monday at lunch. Food was very good and the service was pleasant. It took some time for the food to arrive at the table but was made fresh and was very good. I will definitely return to dine again.

I would be very cautious about eating there, I may never eat Sushi again anywhere. I sat at the bar and watched the sushi chef (owner?) handle raw fish, wipe his nose, cough, handle raw fish. I was horrified, but did not know what to do, when it turned out to be my order. I also noticed personal health items---eye wash, contact solution, vitamins in the food prep area. On top of that, the servers, again including the sushi chef were rude and the main course dish---simple chicken fried rice was mushy and not even hot.

This is one of the weirdest restaurants around. OK. First, it's not possible to be seated and *not* facing a television. At least all the TVs are on the same station, and the restaurant is small enough that the sound doesn't get delayed from one table to another. But, come on. Really? Now, maybe, it being called "Sushi Box" and all, you might forgive me for thinking that it's a sushi place. It's not. Or, more specifically, I *hope* it's not, because it's a Korean food restaurant where the Korean food isn't bad but the sushi is pretty lousy, and while it comes with wasabi, you have to ask for ginger. Again... Really? The Korean food *isn't* bad. The bulgogi is flavorful and the KimChee is *hot*. The sushi *is* pretty lousy, but it's not alone. The soup is pretty lousy too. And, really, if you're going to put edamame on the plate, put more than 5 scrawny little guys on there, and have them be *somewhat* fresh and/or not overcooked and/or not cold. Also, the salad... Italian dressing? One more time, all together now... Really? The service was lousy. Looking at this review you'd think this was a one-star place, and you'd be right. But. The bulgogi was that good. Really.

I totally agree with Sebastian's one star review of this place. I had been going to this place for a few years as it is really close to work, and their lunch specials are pretty good and reasonably priced. The place is really really small and only have about 10 tables and a bar. The only people that work there is the waitress and her husband, the sushi chef, and the cook in the back. I appreciate small family run businesses like this and had been a regular there so much that they know what I am going to order when I walk in the place. As it is owned by a Korean couple, they know to give me extra Kim Chee on the table. Anyways, The last time I went there was with my co-worker. As soon as we walk into any restaurant, my co-worker always head straight to the bathroom to do his "10 minute Business". On this particular day, he comes out of the bathroom with soap in his hand and preceded to tell the sushi chef that the faucet was not working. The sushi chef started yelling at him in Korean and the waitress who knew more English yelled at him to wash his hand in the water bucket underneath the sink in the washroom. They told him there was no running water at the time so they told him to wash with the water bucket. My co-worker was furious and so the waitress told him he could wash his hand underneath the other water bucket closest to the sushi bar. As he had no choice, he went ahead and washed up. You could tell the couple was still upset at him. After all that commotion, I don't know why we still ate there. I guess I was just hungry and wanted sushi badly. After we finished with our lunch, my coworker and I left without tipping thinking it was the last time we would ever step in that place again. Walking out, we can tell the couple was clearly upset. I don't understand why they were so mean. I would have been more sympathetic to them if they were more apologetic, but they were outright mean to my co-worker. They should have closed the restaurant if they had no running water, especially if they have to handle raw items like fish. As soon as we got back to the office, my co-worker called his friend who worked as a restaurant food inspector and he quickly rushed over to the restaurant within half an hour. I was told that the restaurant had to be closed for the remaining of the day. My co-worker and I were really lucky we didn't get sick from that experience. It has been several months now and my co-worker and I have not stepped in that place. As Sebastian also said, BlueFish Restaurant on Willow Rd and Pfingsten in Northbrook is close to work. They have a really cool trendy décor, awesome Food, and a really nice wait staff. I know some of the waitresses there by name.

This is a good place for lunch. It's good food at a reasonable price. It is very small inside, with little ambiance, so takeout might be a good option. This isn't someplace I would consider for dinner.

Yums!! What a wonderful deal when it comes to sushi. So glad to know this place is nearby. I ordered pick up from this local place first time tonight. I got myself the six piece Philadelphia Maki, the four piece Crazy Maki, and an order of the Unagi. When I came to pick up my order I was pleasantly surprised to see that it also included miso soup and four different Korean side dishes. Too cute! Now in terms of the sushi, it was very good.The fish was nice and fresh, cut well, and very thick. All in all, a good experience and a great deal for $20 tax included and a can of pop.

Loved the lifestyle and experience! Saki is really good and the lunch special keeps me coming back. Love to karaoke and the owners of the establishment are kind a very helpful! Will be coming back soon!

Decent basic rolls...Cali roll, spicy tuna, etc... I found the smell of the place and other rolls questionable....

A pleasant surprise. Located in a small strip of stores, small, and cozy. Sushi, sashimi, Miso soup, Tempura...we were a party of 10, and everything was above our expectations. I highly recommend!!!!!

Cozy little place with friendly faces. The server was great to us and was always very cheerful. The side dishes that come out for free were a great treat along with the miso soup. To my surprise everything was very affordable and the sushi was great. I had a few different types of nigiri, a spicy tuna maki, and a spider maki. All were great and tasted fresh. For how good the quality of food was there prices cannot be matched... or I've never seen it. Definitely coming back again.

This is a good place to get lunch. It's a small restaurant but pretty much always packed for lunch. The rolls are pretty good for the price and the waitress was nice. Nothing to get crazy over, there are much better sushi restaurants in the city.

I came here for lunch with a coworker one day to try it out. It's a Korean-owned Japanese restaurant. They are nice and service is not bad. They serve a good amount of food. In addition to the Japanese meal you order, they serve the little Korean side dishes at the beginning of the meal. Not typical for a real Japanese restaurant, but typical for most Korean restaurants. I ordered a chicken teriyaki bento. The flavors were good (not too sweet like some other Korean-owned Japanese restaurants), but the quality of the ingredients was extremely lacking. The chicken was cut into small, chewy, tough slices. I thought that chicken teriyaki could be a good litmus test, but unfortunately, it was sub par. The spicy tuna roll pieces were not uniform. They were also much more spicy than most other spicy tuna rolls I've had elsewhere, but each piece was different in its level of spiciness, which was extremely odd and unexpected. The avocado in the California roll did not seem fresh. They gave four pieces of edamame, which were okay, but also not super fresh, though not bad. I'm not mean enough to give it one star, since the flavors were decent. The ingredients were just not fresh... but at least I didn't get sick from the food. I wouldn't go back as there's a similar place not too far that has far better food quality.

$15 for three of the worst rolls I've ever had, sit down or take out... Reading the other reviews, perhaps I had an anomolous experience and need to give them a second shot...or perhaps I'll just order a bento box next time, because the tempura and salmon teriyaki my friend had looked great. Detailed description of the maki: - seaweed wrap had the texture and resilience of a Goodyear tire - the spicy varieties were stuffed with scraps - rice was hard and chunky To add insult to mangled maki, my friends' udon and bento dishes were both served at least 15 minutes before my rolls finally made their appearance. Another patron lit up a cigarette while we were there despite the Chicagoland ban. And the one waitress was overtaxed covering the entire room. On the positive side, the free appetizer dishes are plentiful and delicious, and it's a great small restaurant atmosphere. And truly, the bento box, Set B, with tempura and teriyaki salmon looked great. Strangely, the sashimi they served to another table proved that they do have good fish and plenty of it. Just don't ask for it to be served in a roll...those are better enjoyed just about anywhere else e.g. Renga Tei, Sea Ranch, the food court at H Mart, etc.

Wish the owners were a little nicer. Some days they are-some days they are not. Food is ok. Their little appetizers are the best. The place is a dive and could use remodeling throughout.

Everytime I come into town my family doesn't miss an opportunity to eat at Sushi Box. We've been coming here for years. They are very generous with their food and the value is incredible. The food is exceptional - can't rave about it enough. Very tasty! Flavorful dishes, sushi, rolls, soups, everything without the food being too salty. No regrets if you come here, I promise.

I have been going to this place for about 10 years now so I may be a little biased. Despite that fact, I have yet to have an experience in all of the chicagoland area like I do on a consistent basis at Sushi Box (The Box). The friendliest people who serve the most delicious and reasonably priced sushi in the area. Prepare for a meal that goes against the typical over the top yuppie Sushi experience that sushi eaters are accustomed to. It is a simple place with fantastic food.
