Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville Resort Lake Tahoe Opens in South Lake - Eater SF

"HEALDSBURG — Per the San Francisco Chronicle, Sushi by Scratch opens on December 1 inside the Matheson in Healdsburg. Described as offering “speakeasy-style omakase,” it’s an offshoot of a once Michelin-starred sushi restaurant from Santa Barbara County headed up by “co-owners Philip Frankland Lee, an ex-’Top Chef’ contestant, and Margarita Kallas-Lee, a pastry chef.” The original location opened in Los Angeles in 2017." - Lauren Saria

Google
The best sushi of my life. My family went here and was stunned by the quality. Each fish was interesting and unique in flavor with a melt in your mouth texture. Additionally the atmosphere and custom drinks, palate cleansers, and dietary changes felt so special. We all left feeling amazed and blessed by a truly special meal.

Google
Absolutely amazing from start to finish! It has a speak easy vibe with an intimate feel. The team is extremely knowledgeable as well as friendly. The atmosphere is great for a special date night or friends gathering. All of the ingredients are purposefully sourced and crafted. Delicious and creative flavor profiles. Also highly encourage doing the sake pairing!

My boyfriend and I are huge foodies and this experience blew us away. The team does a great job and the food is absolutely exceptional

Google
The best way to eat here is bringing your own group and sitting at every seat. This makes for a nice and fun experience. However you eat here, it’s incredible.

Google
Delightfully pretentious delicious food. Creative, but a stereotype of fine dining at the same time. Definitely an intimate atmosphere. I enjoyed every course. You are paying a lot, but it's a whole experience. There are no surprises about the price.

Kim Nicholas

Google
Top quality, expensive sushi and sake. But not the best dining experience. The service was a bit pretentious, rigid, and overblown. (Except the sommelier was great.) Not good at accommodating disabled customers, it was difficult to navigate with a walker, and the acoustics were very poor.

Google
What an amazing experience. It's intimate and they cater to your dietary restrictions. Explain each omakase they have prepared and it's done in front of you. The chef was personable and the staff new your names. It was seriously an experience I haven't had before.

Christopher Watanabe

Google
An exceptional omakase experience. I’ve observed that most of the low rated reviews were over the price of the experience. The experience is quite expensive, but worth the experience if you understand what you’re getting yourself into. The head chef creates a personalized intimate atmosphere, with a touch of fun. He takes you on a journey from the locally sourced produce, to the remote seas of Hokkaido Japan and the Mediterranean coasts of Spain. Each one of the ingredients are thoughtfully used in this experience and are put together with finesse and sophistication. It’s a delight for individuals looking for a food experience that challenges tradition and incorporates ingredients that cause you to second guess yourself in your mind. However, you are delightfully surprised with how wonderfully well they compliment one another in execution. I am a local to Sonoma county, and I plan on visiting again to see what the chef has prepared for next season.

Yelp
Had dinner here a few weeks ago. Loved it, definitely recommend! It's located in a tucked away room inside The Matheson. Pre-dinner was slightly awkward bc they told us we could arrive half an hour early for complimentary pre-dinner drink and a couple of bites so we did but then were left lingering for a while (until almost the dinner start time) as they tried to hunt down everyone else scattered around the bar area killing time. This may have been bc they did mention they were doing the pre-dinner in the room instead of outdoors (I assume bc of the weather). Once we were at dinner though, everything was fantastic! We were sat around the sushi chefs so we had a good view of the prep. Every sushi was well-described. There were some innovative ones (like the bone marrow one) and some fish I had never tried before (like kinki idiot rockfish, delicious, definitely look up what they look like and you'll understand how they got their name lol). We were told there are I think 5 nigiri that are staples of the menu at all the Sushi by Scratch locations, but the rest are created by each site's team. At the end of the meal, you're given the opportunity to add on revisits of ones you really liked or to try some experimental ones (that may make it onto future menus). We were already feeling really full but couldn't pass up the opportunity to try more so we copied another couple and added 3 more experimental ones, and I'm glad we did bc they were great too. My partner got the beverage pairing and they were super generous with their pours. Loved that they took a Polaroid of us at the end of the meal to take home!

Yelp
this place was fantastic! They are in a little room in the back of the Matheson. If you arrive 30 minutes early, you can get a free glass of sparkling wine. However, my only complaint is that we were told "we were not on time" for our 6 PM reservation when we arrived at 6 PM exactly. I'm not sure since when arriving exactly on time was considered late. The host who sat us to our table was not the nicest person because we were "late ". And my friend arrived separately five minutes early, and she was not given her sparkling wine. Honestly, I think that's a bit unfair. Outside of our introduction into the restaurant, everything else was amazing! The chefs and server were all amazing! They definitely made up for the host. They were so friendly and funny. They made our experience very enjoyable. This is a small restaurant, with about maybe 10 seats? So it's a very intimate and fun experience. They describe each nigiri as they are made, and we all eat at the same time. I can't list everything that we ate by item, but the menu is attached. Everything was amazing! All of the sushi was fresh, and it had such unique flavors that are different than a traditional Omakase. We also did the addition for an extra cost, and that was also amazing! I tried one of their cocktails, lovely. This definitely is a place I would go back to and would recommend. It's worth an occasional splurge. Who knew that wine country would have such a great sushi spot.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! This was absolutely a divine sushi experience. One for the history book. Chef Willer Larreal and his crew have created a beautiful culinary choreography. From the toro, to the fresh and delightful scallops as well as the A5 grading Wagyu Nigri. I though I was in paradise with some remarkable and innovative sushi rolls. The Omakaze menu is original and adventurous in its continuum of original tasting discoveries. The service is friendly, attentive and professional. Be aware the room is located in the back of the Matheson restaurant. So not easy to find, it was really a hidden gem......

Yelp
What a great experience bringing an upscale sushi experience to Sonoma County right in the heart of downtown Healdsburg. We started with a welcome drink and appetizer which was optional 30 minutes before the dinner started. We were then taken to the private dining where there was a host explaining each dish and two chefs preparing. We also had another server for drinks and anything else we needed. The spot prawn, wagyu, and unagi were my top favorites of the night. The only thing I didn't love was we opted in adding the truffle option to our dishes which was an extra $100 and it was only on 3 of 16 courses which was not pointed out before we added. To me it wasn't worth the extra $. Other than that, overall great experience, ambiance, and food/service was great!

Yelp
I wanted to put 4.5 stars.... 5 stars for the experience, 4 stars for sushi. This review is for New Year's Eve dinner. Shout out to the staff for being so understanding and accommodating. I actually made the reservation on the wrong date, I wanted to make it on the 31st December but apparently from Friday to Sunday they were offering New Year's Eve menu...dumb me made it on Friday. I got the confirmation email and then I realized my mistake, I emailed them and they gave me a same day response so I didn't have to worry about it for long time. No extra charge thank god Ambiance 5/5: First you will be seated in a dark outdoor area with the rest of your stranger companions, I'm very lucky to have a nice batch of friendly talkative people as I came a party of one. So there's like 8 strangers chatting with each other and they served us a pregame yuzu cocktail in a teacup, super delicious, they also serve us a welcoming bite. I guess after everyone has arrived we are to be transferred to the dining area, a small room with a large bar counter with three sushi chefs and a sommelier. I really like the transition it was like teleporting to another place. I really enjoyed that part. It says arrive 30 minutes earlier to the reservation and I guess it's to give guests time to interact with each other to enjoy the experience together. The ambiance is cozy and bright, the chefs were cheerful and funny. Food 4/5: This is innovative sushi so it can be hit or miss. It's mostly hits for me, however I must say some sushi with the heavy sauces are a little bit acidic there were 1-2 pieces that didn't work out for me. Also the truffles didn't really have much truffle taste as it's probably frozen truffle I suggest putting truffle oil or truffle salt on the piece instead and then adding some truffle for decorations. The pieces that did work out though were spectacular. The nigiri with the pineapple was creative and tasty, the akamutsu is my favorite nigiri, it'a like an otoro that melts into your mouth, im glad they had that tonight. All the fish tasted fresh as it should for the price point and their brand. I wished there was a soup or something cooked in between the nigiris. It was just starter sake, one small bite a chawanmushi, nigiris, then dessert. I was full so I'm not complaining but perhaps taking out some nigiri and putting a different course there would be better and more variety. The dessert was also very delicious but I again I wish there was more that dessert was so small :/ I can eat like 2-3 of those Service 5/5: I wasn't served by the main chef but my chef I believed is the best when it comes to service, he wiped my plate every single time a new piece came, I have a thing for crumbing I like my table spotless all the time if I'm out eating fancy. I look over to the left where these guests are served by the main chef and he didn't wipe their sushi board for every piece their plate was dirty like all the time, I'm glad I didn't have to take pictures using their plate. Look how clean my plate look. I'm really thankful for him, he did it without me requesting. The sommelier was really nice as well they had wine pairing I didn't order but I ordered a sake and a cocktail, I would skip their sake, the cocktail was really delicious. I think I ordered a beehive? They have mocktail option too hehe. The chef introduced each course though in a fun way it wasn't boring or dull, he tried to feed us knowledge with a sense of humor. So it was fun throughout the dinner. Everyone had small talks with the chefs and the people around. I didn't feel like I was dining alone at all. I would recommend going here as they said the menu will change often, it's exciting to see what new flavors they will pair the nigiris with. I hope they will take all the criticism and excel. I might not be coming back for awhile as it's a long drive, but I do wish them the best. Please remember that you are paying for the experience. The food and drinks is good but don't solely judge them for that. Remember a nice dinner includes the environment, the atmosphere, the companions, the food, the experience, and the service. I had a wonderful time here despite maybe not enjoying 1-2 piece of nigiri.

Yelp
Blow your mind omakase! A non traditional take sure but so worth it! Every bite was a work of arts the head chef has carefully curated his menu and really takes you through a journey! Excellent service would drive all the way back any day! They rotate some parts of the meal every 6-8 weeks. Amazing date night spot! Go try it!!!

Yelp
My husband and I booked dinner at Sushi by Scratch to celebrate a birthday and had an incredible time. Due to our reservation time overlapping with the final quarter of the Superbowl we had the extra intimate experience of being the only people seated at this already very intimate experience. The chefs and staff were incredibly kind, friendly and provided us with an excellent time. Sushi by Scratch is not just a meal - it's an experience and an education in food. I described it to a friend as getting to eat a food documentary - beautiful, educational and incredibly delicious! We started with a complimentary cocktail and 2 bites on the patio before our seating time, before heading into the intimate room, aptly described as a speakeasy sushi bar. What followed were 17 of the best bites I've ever had, including meals I've eaten in Japan. The chef has crafted a beautiful assortment of flavors and textures, taking care into every single piece served. I loved getting to hear about where certain elements came from (most imported directly from Japan) and how each fish was chosen to pair with the unique flavors used. Up close and personal you get to watch the beautiful art that goes into crafting the perfect bite and a wide variety of techniques. Certainly not the type of meal you have on the average Tuesday but I can't highly enough recommend taking the time to spend as special evening in this space - you'll feel transported, which is the highest compliment I can offer to any meal.

Yelp
Crazy off the hook over the top 17 "course" / piece sushi dinner. 2 rounds of appers and a warm up cocktail before. Sake and cocktail pairing. Super friendly and crazy knowledgable service. Not a price point I can do every month but so good I will for sure be back.

Yelp
Not well advertised, but what a great little spot. It's in the back of the Matheson and there's nothing that guides you to the sushi restaurant, but ask the server out front! The service was amazing and the food was incredible. The chef was such a nice guy and the servers really knew all about the pairings. Be prepared to pay a hefty bill, especially if you do the pairings that are offered (about $100+ for the whiskey or saki pairing and there was another pairing for added chef specials and black caviar for another $100+). I'd definitely go a lot more often if it was more reasonably priced.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place/experience but there were just a few things that made it a 4 star experience as opposed to a 5. First off I will say that the sushi was delicious and I had some combinations of fish and relishes that I had never had before - points for creativity! The few things that unfortunately were not my favorite were the fact that the pre dinner drink was served outside. I appreciate that this part of the experience was complimentary but I was still turned off by the fact that part of this Michelin star experience was outside - it was behind the building with the sun blinding everyone sitting on the south side of the table and unfortunately lots of flies. The second thing that rubbed me the wrong was was the fact that when one of the wait staff was asking us if we'd like to do a caviar add on for $100, I was saying that I wanted to think about it, when another server swooped in and said "c'mon it's your anniversary!" (it was noted on our reservation that it was our anniversary). I was very turned off by this pushiness.

Yelp
We made the trip from Palau also to try Sushi by scratch and it was a wonderful omakase experience. The experience is very intimate with only bar seating for 10 or twelve people. The chefs are personable and introduce every dish. Everything was fresh and they had some surprising and novel fish we hadn't had before. We will definitely be back and strongly recommend it.

Nicole K.

Yelp
What a fun and great experience! If you love sushi you will most definitely love this place.

Yelp
My friend and I were Absolutely BLOWN AWAY at the Level of Hospitality and quality of the food and Service, Just on another Level Completely. It was the BEST Dining experience I have had in a LONG Time! There were only 4 people that night at a "Bar" area that seats 10 and we were treated like QUEENS!!! From top to bottom I couldn't be Happier and I can't Wait to come back! Just an Extraordinary Experience! Thank You!

Yelp
I've had 3 Michelin star omakase dinners in Japan, and this was as good if not better. The food is both traditional and novel. The ambiance is intimate and immersive. I love how the lights shine on the food and there are no distractions. I love watching the chefs and hearing about their craft / the thought behind each dish. A exceptional meal and performance. Dinner and a show. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I took my wife for Valentines Day and had an excellent dinner and experience. I don't particularly care for sushi so my expectations were low. Ended up with a new appreciation for Sushi as the experience provided 17 courses of high quality fish and meat. It's pricy but part of the my rating is based on the experience with great service and cool setting. Was fun interacting with others at the table and chefs. Fish was fresh and the preparation for each piece accentuated the taste. I would highly recommend. We plan on returning with the family.

Yelp
Whether you are a local or visiting Sonoma County, if you love sushi, you must add this place to your bucket list. It's a masterful symphony of flavors, one piece after another selected and prepared entertainingly by the chef and his team right in front of you. Each piece is a euphony of perfectly balanced little explosions in your mouth, all arranged from beginning to end to create an entire night where the focus is all about the joy of dining out again. The tiny, intimate room where you sit with 7 to 9 other patrons around the chef's bar keeps the focus on the enjoyment of each bite and allows you to share the experience like you're dining with friends or buy out the whole place and bring them with you for a really special occasion. It's not a cheap night out, but that's the point, each moment from the pre-sit cocktails and hors d'oeuvres to accompanying liquid beverage, to the dessert, (if you have room), is planned out for you and meant to give you a fully focused complete dining experience like nothing else in Sonoma County. And for those who may have dietary restrictions, other than fish of course, they can accommodate you, so everyone can enjoy this truly pleasurable night of dining. A definite five stars from beginning to end.

Julie H.

Yelp
This is a full on 5 star experience. Sushi to match the best Omakase you can eat. This is a private room in The Matheson Hotel, 10 seats, 17 courses. There isn't a bad (or average) bite of anything. Nice, personable head chef and staff. Great cocktail/sake list and pairings. Sushi by Scratch Restaurants are well known in Southern CA and Miami (also TX and WA we found out!). Best sushi we've recently eaten and this will quickly become a "must have" reservation. They've only been open 1 week!

Chris D.

Yelp
Dined here on 12/29/2023 with my husband and daughter. Without a doubt the best sushi we've ever had. The food, experience, presentation, the Chef, the staff - all superb. Wish Healdsburg was not so far from SF, but the drive was worth it. Looking forward to going back!!

Todd S.

Yelp
It was good, and memorable but $760 for two? All of the sushi is flown in from Japan, and the service is impeccable, not sure I need or can afford to return.

Jack K.

Yelp
Killer omakase. Great environment. Attentive and fun team creating small works of art.
