Oft cited as a top sushi place in the area, Sushi Cho piqued my wife's interest. Recently postpartum and on a huge sushi kick, she and I have been making our way through most of the well rated sushi restaurants within a 30 minute drive from our home. We visited Sushi Cho for an early Friday dinner. By the time we left around 7, patrons nearly filled the dining room, so consider reservations on the weekends.
We quickly ordered an assortment of rolls, two sushi "tacos," and a small selection of nigiri. The rolls occupy most of the menu, and Sushi Cho indeed boasts 100 specialty maki options ranging from deep fried and sauce laden to simple and fresh. We opted for selections that leaned towards the latter, and found the slices of fish clean and generously portioned. The flavor combinations worked well and the rolls stayed intact throughout service. I can see why this place is so popular on the merit of the rolls alone.
The sushi "tacos" represent a take on the classic hand roll. While the flavor combinations and seafood quality in both the spicy scallop and wasabi yellowtail varieties shone, we found the eating experience a bit unwieldy despite our server's careful instruction. Do not attempt to share them lest you turn your taco into a burrito bowl.
Finally, our nigiri pieces had generously portioned and well cut portions of fresh fish. The rice seasoning and texture, however, failed to impress us. We felt that the nigiri here is an afterthought as only the very standard varieties of fish were on offer. We love more esoteric fin and shellfish, so seeing only tuna, salmon, and other classics disappointed.
In contrast, a highlight of the meal was the service. Staff consistently checked in on us to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. We received multiple bites on the house including a delicious morsel of chopped toro with scallion. The ambiance of the place feels a little more clean and sleek than the typical neighborhood sushi restaurant. Despite the strip mall location, parking here is a little rough due to limited and small spots. Prices here feel fair, as the cuts of fish are ample and the rolls are very filling despite having a restrained quantity of rice. While the search continues for quality nigiri, we will definitely return to Sushi Cho for great rolls and friendly service.
