Ex-Grace Owner Ripped in Scathing Column Over Lawsuits | Eater Chicago

"I noted that the owners of Sushi City in Downers Grove were indicted in the same federal investigation into underreported receipts from 2012 to 2015 tied to alleged use of “tax zappers.”" - Ashok Selvam

Google
Sushi City is by far my favorite sushi restaurant. I have been coming here for years and the place only has gotten better. They just completed their third remodel. Now the restaurant has a super sleek and modern aesthetic. They also increased the number of booth seats they have. This is an all you can eat (AYCE) sushi restaurant and their selection is huge. You get the usual appetizers, nigiri, and basic maki rolls that you would expect from a AYCE sushi restaurant, but this place gives you more! They have always allowed you to order their specialty rolls (their best roll being the torched dragon roll), but they recently added carpaccio plates, ramen, and dessert. Their prices have gone up over time, but I still consider them a great value for everything that they offer you. And it is not just about quantity and variety. This restaurant upholds its quality. Other AYCE sushi restaurants give you lower quality fish and hide it by smothering it under lots of heavy sauces. But at Sushi City you can taste the quality of their fish (just order a salmon or tuna nigiri and taste how fresh it is). The wait staff also is amazing. They are super prompt with everything. This place used to have a robot that served the appetizers. It was a fun novelty. The robot disappeared after the last renovation. Hopefully it will come back some day.. I hesitated to write this review since my home town is Downers Grove and this place is pretty well known to those in DG. However, you should know this place is amazing. The evidence of this is that it is the only surviving store front on that side of the strip mall they are located and another AYCE sushi restaurant (that is a fairly well known chain) that used to compete with them on 75th street closed down awhile ago. I love it at Sushi City and hopefully you will too.

Google
We’d been coming to sushi city since about 2016 and we use to love it. We recently started going again after the new renovation and while the indoor looks great we’ve experienced more issues now more than ever. From the tip percentages on the tablets not adding up properly, to server pressuring about said tip when denying it on tablet (especially when it was other staff that served our food), and now this last time we found a bug in our salad. As a pregnant woman, I’m already limited on what I order there but now I can’t even feel safe to eat there. As a place that serves raw food, this is not an acceptable standard to have and we will no longer going here.

Google
Love the interior! Super modern and futuristic. Service was amazing, food came out not even 10 minutes after ordering. One roll I will NOT recommend is Umami tastes like someone’s foot😭 All the other rolls were insanely good, all you can eat was a good deal and soju is really good!!! Definitely recommend!!!

Nicole U.

Google
The rolls are HUGE and delicious! Our first time here and we expected your typical small pieces so we ordered quite a few things... boy howdy was that a mistake! After 1 round we were stuffed and struggling to finish what we ordered. The restaurant is clean, staff is friendly, and the booths have these cool design to them. They have a great selection of fish, rolls, ramen, and poke bowls. The nigiri pieces are even big with the perfect amount of rice. It's like non all-you-can-eat dinning, but AYCE!

Critico C.

Google
Just had to shout out Sushi City! The food was out of this world, especially the tempura shrimp and avocado roll. Seriously, that thing was fire—super crispy and delicious. The whole place had a chill, quiet vibe, which was awesome. It was easy to just hang out and have a great conversation without shouting. 100% recommend this place. I'll definitely be back for more!

Google
This restaurant did not catch my eye until I was invited to dinner with friends. I’m glad I came across it. I enjoyed it so much I took my husband to lunch here a couple days later, and it was consistent! Great Value for the ambiance, sushi quality, and service. Other ayce sushi places tend to be rice heavy but not this place. Good variety of nigiri and rolls. Husband tried the raw pieces and they tasted fresh. Just fyi, dessert is not included with the lunch menu in comparison to dinner. Coincidentally, John was the server for both my visits and he provided great service consistently. The iPad menu is straightforward.

Amaia C.

Google
This is my go-to AYCE sushi spot! I used to come here a lot when I was younger, but stopped since I moved out of the area. However, I recently came back and they did beautiful renovations! The quality of the sushi is great, fast service & order from iPad, and overall great price especially if you go for lunch (i believe it’s $22-23 AYCE lunch). Highly recommend!

Google
Had not been to sushi city for years, like before the remodeling and now it looks so cutesy! The sushi is so delicious! They updated the place and now u can order on your own using their tablets which is super convenient. Will definitely be going back. My friends and I do the all you can eat option which is so worth it!
google avatar

Ryan J.

Yelp
I don't give sushi places 5 stars; I think this is my first! The remodel looks great. We've always been treated great when we eat here. On super busy nights, they still make the sushi quickly. The tablets make ordering easy. The prices are extremely competitive.
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
Time for an updated review since their gorgeous remodel! Hostess showed us the new ordering system on the tablet. Love this option. You can click on the rolls for description and even make ingredient modifications. Then you can send your order to the kitchen. They changed the layout which enables nice refresh. Service was excellent. I think I will be coming here more often!!

Yelp
Experience was great, newly remodeled with a lot more items. All you can eat sushi, appetizer items, and ramen. I was pleasantly surprised to see Ramen on the lunch menu, it was a nice individual portion size (small for an all you can eat, but large enough for the ingredients) I got the Tonkotsu Ramen, it came with dried seaweed, corn, chashu and noodles. Options for spicy or regular. Noodles were a bit over cooked (for my taste) but the ramen itself was very tasty for all you can eat, it was very good. Each table has a tablet where you place your order. The service is quick and pleasant. I have been coming to this place for several years now and with the new remodeling and changes it's only gotten better! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Delicious and always made right. They pay special attention to our allergy requests and my family and I will keep coming back.
google avatar

Canaan K.

Yelp
It is amazing place we have been going to Sushi City for years. You can beat the all you can eat sushi with good service, friendly staff, and good quality sushi.

Jim B.

Yelp
Amazing sushi at amazing prices. Always a good experience. Good options for experienced sushi eaters and newcomers alike.
google avatar

R G.

Yelp
The ambiance and food presentation is amazing! Service is great. Very clean. Food is fresh and everyone from host to cooks is welcoming. With three kids, they always offer my kids candy or even a dessert. We absolutely love the new iPad system! With a family of 5, this is a go to spot for a nice yummy and affordable dinner. We are happy clients for sure and love to see how their business has evolved. Keep doing great Sushi City.
google avatar

Julie R.

Yelp
the food takes a kind of a while to get to you but nothing crazy because the appetizers are quick. the sushi here is so fresh and delicious. i love the tempura oreos for dessert.

Becky A.

Yelp
The food is to die for!! Highly suggest the Downers Grove roll and Torched Dragon Roll along with SHUMAI!!
google avatar

Precious B.

Yelp
The ambiance was nice and my boyfriend and I were seated in a booth. Our waitress wasn't the best, instead of asking us if we would like anything else she said, "are you guys done ordering after this?" Umm I paid for AYCE so it's pretty rude for a waitress to ask that and have a very rush our table out mentality. The sushi was good but the blonde waitress we had tonight my boyfriend and I were not fond of.
google avatar

Maddi V.

Yelp
Hidden amongst a mostly empty strip mall, I wasn't quite sure what to expect out of Sushi City, but was intrigued by the promise of all you can eat sushi and robot waiters. While the place wasn't particularly intimate or romantic, the service was friendly and attentive. Most importantly, the sushi was fantastic -especially compared to other AYCE sushi spots at a similar price point. They also offered sushi and other menu items a la carte and for take out.

Maddie K.

Yelp
Food is always so goooood!!! The service is great as well. Love the look of the inside! Truly a hidden gem
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Sushi City is tucked away in a big shopping plaza so it's a little hidden but after having dined in a few times I can safely say it's my favorite sushi in the area. The AYCE is priced reasonably and the perfect way to try different rolls they offer. We usually go for their speciality rolls and have never been disappointed (so many to name that we've tried, but again it's all delicious). The service is quick and very friendly. Will be back!
google avatar

Kenny R.

Yelp
This place is a true hidden gem for ayce sushi! Came here for the lunch special and we were not disappointed. The menu was not as big as the dinner one, but had a good selection for the extra discounted lunch price. Love the appetizer robot server, very fun! The restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated. It was not too crowded on a weekday for lunchtime and we got a table easily. The service was very friendly and fast. The sushi was fresh and delicious. We really enjoyed the drink selection too. Definitely we will be back for the dinner menu!

Vinnie L.

Yelp
We went after our last sushi place fell through. This place is great and service is awesome. Place seems clean and is quick with service. You order on a tablet which makes ordering the sushi better( they have photos and explain what they order) Will be back 1000%. Don't listen to the yelp reviews from before. This place is new and improve!

Joelynn R.

Yelp
My first time here and I absolutely loved everything about this place. Will definitely be coming back more frequently. The atmosphere is amazing. The sushi is amazing!!

Eduardo G.

Yelp
Atmosphere was amazing, I got seated right away and customer service was super friendly and helpful. The sushi was here was 10/10

Yelp
We visited on a Saturday night on a holiday weekend so it was busy. We were told the wait would be about 25 minutes but we were called back 15 minutes later. We both had the unlimited dinner which was about $30 per person. It was expensive but justified since it's all you can eat. We started with some appetizers: miso soup, seaweed salad, and gyoza. All were very good! They have a little robot that brings the appetizers to the table. We also ordered the blue sky roll, black dragon roll, Naperville roll, koi roll, and mango Tokyo roll (ordered from favorite to least favorite). I really appreciated that the menu had pictures of each roll too. Service was a bit on the slower side but I didn't mind since it was a busy holiday weekend and it helped pace me so I could eat more sushi. Very happy with my experience and hope to be back soon!
google avatar

David O.

Yelp
We haven't been here in quite a few years so decided to comeback. The All You Can Eat(AYCE) option is $30 per person now & they hand u a sheet to select from a number of options. U can also choose soup & appetizers from the list if u'd like. I usually order about 4-5 rolls just to get my monies worth lol. The service was a lil slow for a busy Friday evening, we would normally come here on weeknights when it wouldn't be as crowded. The ambiance was great, nice & clean restaurant. Only 4 stars cuz they have significantly raised the price to $30 from the $20 it used to be the last time we visited about 4 years ago. I understand inflation & all but still that's a 50% increase!
google avatar

Melissa L.

Yelp
Yum yum!! My sister and I went here for their all you can eat sushi lunch special, $21.99 a piece. It is a delightful and exciting menu. Included with everything from starters like edamame and miso soup, to their specialty rolls, and nigiri. We couldn't have been more happy with the service, ambience, and food. This will be a regular on our lunch schedule.

Jane R.

Yelp
Everything was great. We go frequently and the food and service is excellent, and affordable.
google avatar

Allison R.

Yelp
First time here and this place was excellent for all you can eat sushi! For the price it includes a very generous amount of signature rolls, regular maki, nigiri & appetizers. We ordered gyoza and vegetable tempura to start. Both were great. The vegetable tempura was SO crispy. The appetizers were brought out on a little robot cart which was cute and fun (esp for the kids). For the rolls we ordered Godzilla, Chicago fire, turtle, downers grove, Mexican, California, spicy tuna and then a few pieces of nigiri (salmon, hamachi, super white tuna). Everything came out pretty quick and tasted flavorful and fresh. The nigiri melted in your mouth which is always a must for me. The inside was spacious and clean. Our server was attentive and friendly. Was it the best sushi I've ever had in my life? No. But for all you can eat and the pleasant service, it is definitely worth your money and time- check this hidden gem out if you can!

Helen C.

Yelp
Amazing sushi and appetizers the Service it's great we come to this place often and do far never disappointed

Yelp
This place has really really fresh food! I can't remember off hand what my friend n I ordered, but it was a huge amount of rolls that were absolutely delicious. To be warned though, don't order more than you can fit in your gut. If you have say 2-4 rolls left, try to eat it or share it cuz they will charge you $1/roll that's waisted. Honestly, that's not a bad idea. Ppl waist so much food nowadays. Also expect to pay $20-40/person when going. It was worth it in my book. They have this robot that brings out your appetizers, servers bring your actual meal. The robot is funny cuz if it's really crowded n it can't maneuver where it's going, it gets an angry face in frustration. Lol

Yelp
We decided to dine in here at lunch on a weekend. For 2 people spending a little over $60, this AYCE sushi spot is the worst one we've been to yet. While the fish quality is good, it's nothing compared to HOW LONG THE WAIT is for your sushi. Maybe it's a tactic to get you ordering more but it's ridiculous. We only ordered nigiri pieces which is literally a piece of fish on top rice and ONE ROLL... it took almost 30 minutes. I notated they had about 4 sushi chefs that day and there were 5 tables including us. Service is sloooow. Our appetizers, however, came out in under a minute after we ordered them. Our server also checked up on us a BIT TOO MUCH. Like you just asked if we needed anything 5 minutes ago...no...we don't need anything....just sitting around waiting for our sushi..... I made a note that this place also gives a lot of rice with the nigiri's. Very smart of them to fill us up quickly. We only were able to put in one order before we asked for the bill. We also didn't want to wait ANOTHER hour for more sushi. I'll be sticking to Sakura Nami for AYCE.

Jay Y.

Yelp
Love great tasting food, superb service ? Well don't come in expecting any of that. We had the ayce, miso soup served below lukewarm temperature. Food takes the longest time to get to your table with what looks like a full kitchen staff. And if you order an appetizer make sure the kitchen has it or you keep putting in your order time in time again with the wait staff clueless to your inquiry. The design of the facility is somewhat weird with decent atmosphere. Their menu looks similar to another place in Naperville called sushi naper. This is a type of restaurant you would not want to return.
google avatar

Claudia A.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised at how flavorful the food was. The Mexican roll was my favorite and full of flavor. They were super busy so food took awhile to come out. Server was friendly and it's definitely a place for the food... not really the ambiance. Going back for sure

Jay C.

Yelp
It looks abandoned! Ridiculous location. I was afraid to park and walk in. Who would even work here. Does not look like a food place.

Cathaleya C.

Yelp
The food is picked from a menu and is AYCE. The service is quick. The ambiance is casual with lots of seating.

Sha R.

Yelp
Update, within the past 8 years they have improved and got a good set of staff which completely changes my previous review from 2018.

Yelp
Top Row: Tamago Nigiri, Salmon Nigiri Middle Row: Nigisake Roll, Unagi Maki Bottom Row: Spicy Girl Maki

Yelp
Big, clean, well-lit and modern. Plenty of seating. Food: mediocre. Service: TERRIBLE. Our waitress paid no attention to us whatsoever - didn't offer us drink refills, much less ask if we wanted more food from the All-You-Can-Eat menu. We waited a half-hour for our order. We received a roll we never ordered, but were missing an appetizer and our nigiri. Our waitress told us she'd "go put those items in now" - as if we'd never ordered them in the first place. Our final sushi roll took so long to come that we eventually asked for our check and for the roll to go. We were accommodated, because it was pretty obvious how ridiculous the situation had gotten. We wanted to like this place. But the mediocre food and poor service ruined it for us. We won't be back.
google avatar

Debra B.

Yelp
Good sushi as always. Ayce is a good bet, but now is $29.95. It's more of a treat than a habit.
google avatar

Jeffrey A.

Yelp
My wife and I visit Sushi City whenever we have a taste for sushi. Their Torched Dragon Roll is the best, you definitely have to try it. The Mexican Roll and Downers Grove roll are delicious. It's a great value for the all you can eat price. They also offer sides such as crab rangoon, coconut shrimp, and edamame. Be careful how much you order though, they charge extra for every piece of food that's not eaten. Definitely check this place out.
google avatar

Zeina E.

Yelp
New favorite AYCE sushi in the burbs! Came here with my boyfriend on a Friday night, and the place was packed. I thought it was going to be an hour wait like most AYCE sushi places in the city, but we were actually seated within 10 minutes. The restaurant itself is moderate in size and decorated beautifully. There is bar, booth and table seating depending on availability. I'm not sure if it's BYOB, but there are plenty of wine shelves in the back corner of the restaurant and I saw a few people get up and choose a bottle to drink at their table. Dinner is about 25$ and lunch is about 18$ per person. Everything on the menu from appetizers to special rolls is included in the AYCE. I truly believe that it should be at least 3$ cheaper; 25$ for AYCE sushi is Chicago pricing. On a side not, if you plan to have lunch on a weekend, be prepared to pay dinner prices. The menu is rather different than a lot of other sushi places I've been to. We had the Edamame and Chicken Yaki as appetizers. The sauce or marinate on the chicken was really good and the portion was generous for an appetizer. For rolls, we ended up only trying their special rolls. You can get a California Roll at basically any sushi place you go to, so why not try something different? The order took about 30min or to come out, so be prepared to wait. We had the following sushi rolls and I recommend each and every one of them - if you can handle all that food. 1- Torched Dragon - the lemon wasabi sauce on top is delicious and makes the whole thing come together perfectly. 2- Blu-Sky - have you ever had blueberry mayonnaise? You will if you try this roll! I was skeptical at first, but it tasted extremely refreshing. 3- Godzilla - Very similar to the dragon roll, except no lemon wasabi sauce. 4- Angel Roll - this roll is topped with a lot of fake crab and is a mouthful. 5- Turtle - very similar to the caterpillar roll. The only reason I ordered it was because it showed that it is shaped like an actual turtle. I thought this would make a perfect yelp/Instagram picture, but it came out as a regular roll. That was disappointing, but it still tasted really good. Bottom line, the sushi here is great, service is somewhat fast and kinda friendly, but make sure you finish all your rolls or you will be charged for every PIECE you do not eat. Another side note, if you plan to eat dessert, I did not see any on the actual menu. I am not sure if there is another menu for dessert, but we never asked and one was never brought to us. Normally, AYCE sushi places include dessert, but I guess this one doesn't. ~Till next time!

Isabelle M.

Yelp
Want to start off by saying the sushi is good. The only issue is it took an hour for our first order to come out. Our server never once apologized about the wait and seemed to be actively avoiding our table. I get it was dinner time and busy but at least acknowledge that your customers have waited an hour to get their food weren't offered anything while we waited either. Had to flag down another server to get a drink.
google avatar

Joan S.

Yelp
This is the slowest service I've ever experienced for any takeout. I ordered my food over the phone at 1120am. I was told my order would be ready in a half an hour. I got there 35 minutes later and was told my order was not ready, but that it would be ready in 5 to 10 minutes. From that point I waited for 45 minutes to get my to go order. I wasted my entire lunch break waiting there and had to deal with my angry boss the rest of the day because this place could not get it together. They were not busy. There were only 3 tables with 2 people each the entire time i was waiting there. There is no excuse for service this bad.
google avatar

Nilsa L.

Yelp
Yummy, yummy, yummy and did I say yummy. Service was great and food worthy of a return trip real soon.
google avatar

Yelp
Torched dragon is guaranteed to melt in your mouth! This cooked sushi is infused with so much flavor!
google avatar

Yelp
All you can eat sushi place, highly recommend making a reservation during the weekend since they are at limited capacity. I love finding good all you can eat sushi spots because let's admit it hardly any delicious ones around for a good price. The lunch is 17.99 and dinner 22.99 with the option to do dinner all day. Service is excellent every time we have been here and the rolls always taste fresh and flavorful. Three really delicious rolls I can recommend would be blue sky, snow mountain , and jo jo roll. Three different types of flavor mixtures but delicious every bite!
google avatar

Melinda C.

Yelp
Been coming to this location for the past 5 years. Best quality sushi compared to any other sushi places. It would've been a full 5 stars, but I feel as if service has been not that great. I miss the old employees they had a few years back. But I know the new team is doing their best with high demand of Sushi City. However, their is a women who mainly is in front desk that could be better at customer service. Each time my boyfriend and I go over, we can tell that she is overwhelmed. She seems to always be in a bad mood. When she walks us to our table, she doesn't even signal us to follow her. She would start walking away, and I would understand if it happens once or twice. But seeing as though we are regular customers, and for each time we interact with her it's seems to be the same situation. But other than that the food is delicious!
google avatar

Ralf G.

Yelp
Worse service ever that I experienced in this place. I had to ask 4 times for them to give me a container to put soy sauce . I had to clean my on table and stock the plates and they never brought the check , so I when to the front desk to pay . Don't come here if you want good service I usually tip 20% or more but not for this kind of service . I'm sorry but never again.

Chris S.

Yelp
DON'T GO HERE. Online order was shorted 12 pieces of sushi. Also informed the restaurant that we had a diner with a shimp allergy... what did they do, put a huge shrimp temura tail as a garnish in her dish.

Pennie N.

Yelp
Love the food and service but the wait for one shashimi was a little long but otherwise it was a great experience
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
The sushi is good, I tried a few different kinds and happy with it. The service is good and they have this cute robot that comes to your table to deliver your order. Nice and clean with plenty of seating for large groups.

Yelp
ACYE Sushi Dinner for $21. You can also order ala cart, but most come here for the all you can eat. In addition to the items on the paper form to fill out what you want to order, you can also write in rolls from the House Special Maki menu. My favorite roll here is the Turtle with shrimp tempura, cream cheese, and spicy mayo topped with avocado and eel sauce. The torched dragon (their most popular roll) is also good. I usually come with a big group (10+) and they are very accommodating. There was no issue paying separately because we pay individually at the cashier up front before we leave. Make sure you order what you can eat because you'll have to pay extra if you leave food uneaten. Yelp
The best all you can eat in Illinois. I'm a sushi fan. I don't eat per roll as the cost would be in the $75 range. I go to Sushi City for freshly made to order, all you can eat. It's not like the buffets that keep sushi out for hours that turns cold and dry. Sushi City has two types of menus: lunch and dinner, you can pick either one but you cannot share. So if you are with company, you should all pick the dinner menu during lunchtime.
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
I really never write reviews- but I feel like we definitely got tricked here. I saw a video on TikTok of the place and we drove out from the city for their unlimited lunch option, which is advertised @$21.99. When we arrived the host asked us if we were their for the all you can eat option and we said yes. They gave us a menu to check off what we wanted. The menu did say dinner menu, but I didn't think anything of it considering we were there at 12PM on a Thursday. Anyways we ordered our food (which was fine, nothing special) and the check came out. The check listed our all you can eat @$29.99 each. When we asked the server he said they do have an all you can eat lunch, but that was a different menu (again we didn't even get that option the host just gave us the dinner menu and didn't say anything about lunch). We informed him that the host never told us that and he just kind of shrugged his shoulders. Will not come back & am dissatisfied with how this turned out.

Yelp
010222 Fresh and fabulous! I cannot say enough about this place. The Sushi rolls aka Makimono aka Special Maki are fantastic! They are nothing but fresh flavor and fabulous texture where it's needed. The rolls are exciting, but be careful of how many you think you can eat, they will charge you for leftovers that's how tasty it is! Your eyes and mouth will be bigger than your stomach. My list of the rolls that I have tried and only had one I did not like at all, and that was (Spicey Tuna Maki) it just tasted like pepper in the pink stuff (Shitake mushroom) sadly after trying all the rest, I thought the mushroom would have had a bigger presence in the roll, but you just didn't know there was even any mushroom in there. Now, these are the rolls I tried and loved! Highly recommend (Chicago Fire)(crispy sweet potato maki) (Snow mountain) (black dragon) (Downers Grove) (sweet summer) I have already been there twice with different people and the quality is the same. Now, on the appetizer list, what I did try I wasn't all that impressed; it didn't seem like it was made fresh on sure but came in a bag. I am not a big appetizer eater unless that's my only meal. I did try the coconut shrimp and was not impressed. I love raw fish and I did try sake, Maguro and Hamachi my first time there and unfortunately none of that had a fresh flavor which I was surprised, a tad dry too, the next time I was there I did not bother with it . The place is new, so it's clean and bright, and they did separate and spaced everybody due to the covid restrictions. The staff just kept working and did a great job, but there really is no time for conversation. There is a robot that delivers your appetizers, but it does not deliver your entree items that was fun to see it get stuck in some areas. We did do the all you can eat so there is a wait time, especially on busy nights and weekends, and there were a lot of large parties so if you have an impatient party do not go during prime dinner time and due to the limited seating with covid restrictions there was a wait time. I highly recommend you make your 1st order..several rolls,  remember none of this is piping hot, so there's no need to worry about it getting cold . They also seem to do a very good carry out business, lots of pickup orders.  So grab yourself a menu. Highly recommend,  will be busy so keep that in mind when you go. Love it!
