Sushi Erika Opens After Sushi Deli and Japanese Market Close | Eater Miami

"Closed in March 2017 after a 37-year run, Sushi Deli was owned by Michio Kushi; his daughter Erika Kushi now operates Sushi Erika and has brought back much of the predecessor’s feel and menu. The original restaurant was known for notoriously strict rules, including a no cell-phones policy at the sushi bar." - Olee Fowler

The place was lively when we visited with the staff dressed in costumes and having their own best costume contest, as it is Halloween Day. We were promptly seated and got to looking through their multipage menu. For appetizers, we ordered the fried calamari and mussels dynamite. The portions were quite generous and definitely shareable. For rolls, we ordered the Katie, best seller set, and red tide. The rolls were flavorless, tempura and crunchy flakes were cold and stale tasting. Our waitress seemed friendly at first, before ordering. However, after the food were delivered to the table, she was pretty much nonexistent to us. Not once did she came to check on us but I did see her check on surrounding tables. It's fine, I could've cared less on whether we had "service" but the problem was, I couldn't catch her attention to let her know that there was a fruit fly that was stuck to some ginger, or that we wanted some extra sauces. It's just my luck with the fly, huh? Anyways, the prices are reasonable and affordable. Unfortunately, we didn't have a good dining experience.

Google
This place was recommended by my son who often eats here with his colleagues for lunch. Delicious food for a great price. Awesome service by Alejandro, he has a great memory!!

Google
Everything was good, especially their gen z roll .. appetizers were amazing. Some of the rolls pieces had little to no filling only reason I don't get rid of full five stars but worth the price and on the last note the sushi robe with the mango needs a larger piece of mango. The cream cheese really overpowered the mango

Google
Highly recommended, just know it gets very busy and it will take time to get your food. Suggest looking at the menu before arriving and ordering as soon as you are seated. Dropped a star on service as the server was switched on us and we had no idea who was taking care of our table. In the end, it was a good visit.

Google
We got seated quickly on a Saturday night, and service was great! They came just often enough to be convenient and not annoying. I spotted this place because I've never seen such cheap nigiri in San Diego, especially with this rating, and we were not disappointed. The salmon nigiri was really good (and pretty big), and the yellowtail was solid (though not amazing). The albacore was also pretty good. I was also impressed by the rolls. Usually I find the rolls to be a little lower quality in most places, but these were really tasty! They also didn't fall apart, which was nice. We got the Bestseller combo, and the fish, shrimp, and crab were all very fresh.

Google
Stopped in for a late lunch and was impressed with both the food and the service. We started with avocado tempura, crab lagoon and the monkey brains, all were delicious. The monkey brains have spicy tuna with crab wrapped around it and then tempura. We tried a number of rolls and liked them all. Our waitress helped us decide and everything was great. All the staff were very helpful.

Google
The sushi deli one block from Convoy was great, fresh and large portions. Prices are fantastic. It was a little over $10 for a caterpillar roll. A dragon roll was $14 and the bento boxes which come with miso soup and a drink were $11 m-f till 2:30pm. The prices are crazy good and the food was great. Parking can be tricky, they have no parking lot just street parking available so be ready to walk a bit. Price, value and over all good food, we will be going back!

Google
Sushi deli's been a staple for a long time. Cheap and decent sushi . Would recommend getting one of the Combos ( Best Seller or the 4x4 ) . Also try going on Thursdays, as they have some of their old menu items (order the Scallop Dynamite and the SD Fries for a good appetizer)

Yelp
When I say I'm craving sushi, I usually mean I'm craving nigiri. But on the off chance, I want something with more carbs, I'll come here for their sushi rolls. My go-to spot used to be Sushi Diner in Clairemont but since they've closed, I've had to find a place to replace them without sacrificing quality. And let me say that this place is the most comparable, sushi rolls are unique and very filling (without doing too much on the rice) and they're affordable! They usually have month specials that comes with 4 different rolls for about $15! I definitely feel like I'm stealing with those prices bc it's so worth! This place is def my go-to in San Diego for sushi ROLLS.

Yelp
This place has been my go to for fast somewhat decent tasting sushi. I can't complain as they are always consistent in terms of speed and quality. This can't compare to any real sushi places in Kearny Mesa but since it always hits the spot when I hungry and impatient I can't fault them on anything. For sure will be back.
google avatar

Ali R.

Yelp
I really like that they have a bar. The drinks were good. The service was good. I will be back. It has a cool vibe. Everyone was friendly.
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
Came here from the recommendation of family member we are visiting. I'll say for ease of getting in with 2 kids, and the friendliness and speediness of service that could be 5 stars alone and food was solid but not amazing. I've just been eating too much fancy sushi lately lol. This place was solid as I said. Tasted fresh enough, just mid quality. But that was reflecting in pricing. All good deals. Nothing too expensive. I didn't like my cocktail though. I ordered a Paloma but it fully tasted like a margarita. They are similar drinks but not the same. I should have just ordered beer and saki as I planned to. I enjoyed my San Diego roll and 2 pieces of unagi. Place was popping at the end of the night, glad we came here. No fuss, no frills, great server. Mid level sushi. I can live with that.

Yelp
Okay so this is a great spot for a date night. Very dark, dim light vibe. Although it was PACKED & super loud so I can barely hear the person across from me. Lots of tables big and small however the small tables are really close to each other. Sushi was great, muscles were great, there's also a bar. It's giving Japan vibes. Also nice wall art, got beer on the wall and a huge octopus. The bathrooms are located outside away from the dining area. Parking kinda sketchy but once you figure it out you should be good.
google avatar

Katherine T.

Yelp
The restaurant features a cute outdoor patio tucked away in the back. Staff is also attentive and friendly. They offer monthly bento and sushi specials, along with weekday deals that are not only super filling but also provide great value for the money. While the quality of the fish reflects the price, the overall experience is great. I wouldn't say I'd come specifically for the food here, but there's a great ambiance for date nights!
google avatar

Molida C.

Yelp
First timer here (shocking) because this place has so much hype lol but overall everything I got was pretty good! Didn't wait as long as I thought I would have also on a weekend..
google avatar

Yelp
I had one of the best sushi rolls I've had in a while here, which is the Roger Rabbit. I loved the flavor combination of the spicy mayo and sesame seeds, plus the subtle heat of the fresh jalapeños was a great addition to the overall flavor profile. I went on a Tuesday night and the place was busy not super packed, and the staff was on top of it. They brought out water and gave us time to look at the menu. After we got our food and drinks and devoured our rolls they promptly cleared our plates. This is such a great spot to grab some sushi that's an affordable price for such nice quality. The vibe is perfect for a casual hangout, date night, or solo treat day.

Yelp
Was craving some sushi so I asked my hubby to pick some up and choose something I've never had before on the menu. Because I like shrimp he ordered me the Coco Loco- Coconut shrimp, cucumber & cream cheese On top: Avocado, coconut flakes & sweet chili sauce Totally nothing I expected. Never had coconut on the top of sushi. Was so excited to try I failed to take a photo to share! lol Anyway, it was unique with the coconut flakes on top. The chili sauce was interesting with it. I actually favored it without the chili sauce. I liked it with the avocado. Would definitely order it again.

Yelp
Food exceptionally yummy, Service is always top notch! Ambience is wonderful I love how there is different areas for different feels. My 5 time going and I highly recommend especially use their point system too if you go periodically like I do.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved this place! 4 rolls for $14.99 is an insane price and all were fresh and flavorful. Service was great and there was a 10 min wait on a Saturday evening. My boyfriend got the nigiri combo which was also good but I think you're better off getting the 4 roll deal- can't beat it!

John B.

Yelp
Immediately seated and served also. Service exceptional. Friendly staff. Reasonably priced. Sushi good, ramen meh.
google avatar

Nancy T.

Yelp
Service was great. The server was very chill & attentive. They work as a team and had others tend to us as well. Food was good for the price. Ambiance is fast paced and chill. Options to sit inside or outside. Great choice if you're in the area.
google avatar

Yelp

Dropped a star on service as the server was switched on us and we had no idea who was taking care of our table. In the end, it was a good visit. Also want to mention we sat in the far back and was probably the best seats in the place. The high wall opened up to the outside and it created an amazing ambiance for dining

Yelp
Food came Fast. Was Cheap. But also, most importantly, was so GOOD! Ambiance was great and service was efficient. We came on Comic Con weekend. I used to frequent the spot that was in Downtown Gaslamp near the nostalgic Horton Plaza. I didn't know Sushi Deli was not down there anymore but this was a good spot, away from the bustle.
google avatar

Yelp
Lively, casual sushi spot in the heart of SD! Service is friendly and food is above average. Our favorite rolls were the mellow yellow and fire fire but they have so much variety, such as, bento boxes, ramen, and Japanese curry for those who do not want sushi. We will definitely be back here if we are craving sushi in this area. Be aware, they do not take reservations but the walk in on a Saturday night was super fast for a party of 4 or less.

Hannah M.

Yelp
I get the Roger rabbit every time either deep fried or as is. Everything on the menu is a win! Would highly recommend. This is my safe option because the quality and service is A1.
google avatar

Yelp
Great sushi for a great price. Got there right when happy hour started. Happy hour and service was amazing!

Yelp
Great, cheap date night spot! Came here on a Friday night and it was a 45 min wait. We were luckily enough to get seated at the bar because it was just 2 of us but prepare to wait a bit if you have a large party. The vibes inside were really cool. There's TVs and we loved the decor inside. We both got the March Special deal - 16 pieces for $15! This was great because we were able to try a variety of specialty rolls. They have many lunch specials and their happy hour looks great as well. Don't come here to expect gourmet sushi but for a cool, upbeat restaurant with affordable prices. We'll be back!
google avatar

Veronica H.

Yelp
We have been here numerous times and it's always a great experience. We normally get seated with 5-10 minutes. Customer service is always great and everyone is always in such a happy mood. They have music playing all the time and it's a great variety catering to all customers. Everything we have ordered throughout our numerous visits has always tasted great and we have never been disappointed. Two of our usual items are the calamari and monkey brains. The price seems reasonable compared to how much food you're getting. This if definitely out go to for a quick bite and for when we are craving sushi rolls.
google avatar

Jasmine M.

Yelp
Crowded but the prices are reasonable with many different varieties. Not quite upscale but I like the combos they serve for only around $15 before tax. I go to Sushi Deli here and in Hillcrest. Nice boisterous vibe. I can't fall asleep here. It would be nice if they upgraded a bit but that might be hard to do and keep prices reasonable.

Yelp
Here's a place I bet many have drove by and did know it was there. Unless you're a Claremont local. The reason I'm saying this is because getting a table for dinner is about timing. We were lucky because the wait wasn't long!!! Once we checked in we opted for outside seating, it was covered outside and there was no sun to contend with. However be aware that the table's proximity could have your conversation heard. Plus with many people you may have to speak up to be heard. The atmosphere is very casual while seated at a wooden table with chairs. Once we were seated we were looked over the menu, very shortly we were asked about beverages. Wait staff was very attentive. From our order there were an assortment of drinks from Mules, water and Long Island ice tea. If you love sushi this maybe the place. They have so many choices, you have to go back many times to try different combinations. I chose the Deluxe with the assortment of items from sushi, salad, white rice with chicken, deep fried broccoli, zucchini, and fish, with some Edamame. All of it was delicious and disappeared quickly. There so many other option on the table like fried rice and other sushi. There was one with mango and another with spice, all were very good!!! Parking is mostly on the street. They have a small lot behind the building that could hold 6 to 8 cars. It will depend on when you go. We got lucky with only one handicap spot in the back. There were 3 in our party with a cost of $149 with tip, so be aware when you go. They also have a bar area with stools, here's where you check in for a table also if you choose you could eat, drink at the bar. Oh there is another covered outside seating at the front on the building like a porch. I believe we gone there so many times and each hasn't been disappointed. So like I always say try it you may like it.

Yelp
I came here with a friend on a Saturday evening, and we waited around 5 minutes to get seated, given we didn't have reservations prior to going. The staff was really friendly, provided us with waters and the menu immediately. Our waiter recommended some rolls for us, since we were indecisive. The garlic shishito peppers were really good appetizers, though our waiter did warn us that they were spicy. We ordered two rolls, the black and yellow and the fire fire. I really liked the black and yellow (5/5) since the flavor combination was really good. It was citrusy and refreshing, didn't feel too heavy. The fire fire was average (3/5). It was good but nothing special or unique. It tasted like a california roll with spicy mayo sauce. Overall this is a nice place to check out if you want to grab some cheap decent sushi rolls and some nice appetizers!
google avatar

Ethina S.

Yelp
Super good sushi for super cheap prices! They have a wide selection of rolls, baked rolls, bowls, etc. Parking shouldn't be an issue but you may have to walk a bit when coming on busy times such as weekend nights. Be prepared for a wait at peak times as well because they are just that good!
google avatar

Kathy B.

Yelp
Parking can be challenging, and once inside the tiny front dining area can be very loud if the bar is full, but you can opt for seating on the front patio which is quieter. The food is decent and their weekday daily lunch specials are a great deal with enough food that we both took half our bento boxes home. Service was awesome.

Eden A.

Yelp
Love this place so much. Great service and food. Basically all the sushi here are bangers except maybe the Rainbow Roll and the San Diego. Those weren't for me. But this place is super affordable and cute I have no complaints. Plus the waiters are always super nice and attentive.
google avatar

Jocelyn B.

Yelp
Honestly idk what happened in their kitchen and I'm sorry to say it but sushi deli 3 has fallen way down the pyramid in my eyes i came back expecting the same bomb sushi I always get here and we got the same rolls but they were insanely lackluster. We were seated immediately and service was fast and kind with good music which was nice, but we were lowkey so sad the rolls flopped they were just so remarkably mid The tourmaline was still good as always w the lime slice on top and I was happy to hear they still had it bc it wasn't on the menu. Snapping salmon and island breeze were not it but I loved them last time I went
google avatar

Sergio G.

Yelp
For $80 definitely not worth it. Sushi Deli 3 doesn't compare to the others. (Deli 1&2) Sushi was good of course but it didn't taste as fresh. Took roughly 45min to get our order. Our waiter and other waiters were beyond amazing so it sucks leaving this review. Personally loved the service but the food lacked. Wasn't fresh nor nothing stood out. Wings were okay. Rolls were okay. Can't say anything stood out. Ordered two beers that never reached the tables. Decided not to remind our waiter after tasting the sushi. Wouldn't come back to this specific location but the waiters are great! Also, watch for parking. It's tough.

Gabriela R.

Yelp
We used to come here a lot, for some decent priced sushi and it was good. Came around this time and it was so bad, my "best seller" sushi had bones all over it, it was inedible. The salmon was grey, i didn't eat it so i wouldn't get food poisoning. Had to return the wings they were soggy, the only thing that was good was the miso soup. The people behind me also were loud af, like if it was brunch with mimosas. I'm not going to be coming back anymore, I should've went to tajima across the street. It would've been worth my money.
google avatar

Addy W.

Yelp
Came here with a friend, service was good. I liked the very back patio area. Sushi was decent, and about average of other sushi in pricing. Overall, I'd probably come back.
google avatar

Mariah R P.

Yelp
Sooo delicious, we sat at the bar and had quick service. Everything was so tasty and the customer service was great
google avatar

Mei L.

Yelp
My friend and I came on a busy Friday night. The wait was 35 mins so we ended up going to the book off across the street while waiting. It went by really fast and they sent us a text message to notify us that our table was ready! The waitress sat us at a table in the room towards the back. Never had the opportunity to sit there but the decorations and ambiance were very nice! Food took a little bit more time to be served due to orders being backed up in the hot kitchen. I will say a stand out was the tempura avocado appetizer! Although it came out after our entrees it was a very nice edition to our meal! My friend thought the 4x4 was a bit smaller than usual. As for my entree, the chicken katsu curry, I wished there was a bit more rice but overall a very classic katsu curry! Something I wanted to highlight was parking. Very difficult to find during a busy night but we ended up finding street parking! Wishing for more staff next time but I did see they have different advertisements hung up promoting that they need new staff. Overall, decent visit! Hoping to stop by soon when it isn't as busy!
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
Came here for the first time and loved it. I had the Lychee Fizz, and it was delicious. The Hot Hot Crunchy Roll was amazing. The Deli Fries and Crab Rangoon Wontons were also delicious. They have happy hour every day. Parking isn't bad at all. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Summer W.

Yelp
Affordable sushi that's better than more expensive places. Fun atmosphere and smaller dining areas keep it foxy
google avatar

Tracy L.

Yelp
This is our happy place. This is was my 2nd date with my husband, we always come here seven years later. Freshes sushi, great atmosphere always friendly and lively! Best prices! Great cocktail selection. If you love Sushi, you need to try Sushi Deli 3.
google avatar

Aly Q.

Yelp
We were craving sushi and this place hit the spot! Their menu offers a variety of dishes but we stuck with sushi rolls. They have a short list of nigiri and sashimi as well. My favorite was Mo's Roll- it's on their Thursday only menu. They have a menu that has specials on each day! This place does fill up fast for dinner but there is a lot of seating and bar seating too. There is a small lot in the back of the restaurant or your other option is street parking.

Owen M.

Yelp
Best sushi in San Diego period great prices and even better fish service is nice too would 100% recommend
google avatar

Jordyn S.

Yelp
Big fan of the sunkissed roll! I've never had lemon on sushi before and the lemon and black pepper together gave it such a fresh, citrus taste. The service was so fast and an overall great experience!
google avatar

Sydni S.

Yelp
I love sushi deli! Their rolls with lemon are my absolute favorite, especially the sunkissed roll, the combo of the lemon and pepper is to die for. For having fun flavors they are really affordable too. Sometimes there's a wait to get a table but I like to go at off times and I never have to wait that long. I went at 5 pm on a Sunday and had no wait at all which was great! The service is also super fast which is nice.
google avatar

vincent j.

Yelp
The experience is always consistent. I appreciate the variety in options, but the quality just never compares unfortunately, however for the price and if you're just eating to eat and enjoy time with people, I think this is a stellar place. But to reiterate, the food is consistently mediocre for me personally.
google avatar

Olga A.

Yelp
I love sushi deli 3 if NOT DoorDash and even while in restaurant! Just a helpful tip! Overall been coming here for several years and consistently good sushi. Dos get pack which is always good but sucks too. LOL Parking is a nightmare during typical dinner hours FYI.
google avatar

Romuel Dave C.

Yelp
Decently good Japanese food at a good price. Great combos for bento boxes. Probably a better place if you prefer cooked food or rolls because the Sashimi I ordered had pieces cut very, very thin. I wasn't a fan of the size of the fish in comparison to the price. You can see how small the fish is in my photos. I think the portions were bigger at Sugarfish and Nobu! However the service was superb, the calamari was good, and the carpaccio was delicious. Sake Bomb prices were also a great value. Parking is a bit difficult, park in the back a few buildings to the right to avoid looking forever!
google avatar

Mercedes A.

Yelp
The service is always slow, but that doesn't stop the food from being bomb! The sushi is so good here nothing like I had anywhere else. I was a big fan of their location in downtown, but then I found their other location. The food is always fresh and delicious. The atmosphere is kinda load especially being seated next to big partys. But their ramen needs some work.
google avatar

Sara W.

Yelp
Loveee this place! I've only been to sushi deli 1 and 2, and 3 was just as good. I'm vegetarian and the beehive roll makes eating sushi actually fun. Not just a cucumber avo roll. Comes with jalapeño and lemon on top! One of my must visits while in San Diego
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
Always a great deal with their monthly specials! Save money! As far as sushi rolls are concerned I would suggest their Heat Stroke, or Heat Wave rolls. Hey anything with Dynamite sauce or habanero would be good.
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
Amazing food, service, ambience, and a really fun environment with quality, fish and amazing reasonable price
google avatar

Anna U.

Yelp
Love the sushi!! Great place to eat delicious sushi and the staff is very professional! I love the outdoor seating because inside to too loud and can't have a conversion with family. I will continue to come here with family or friends!

Juan P.

Yelp
Great food for the price..! Actually the food is bomb here for the price comparison to other sushi spots in San Diego.. so glad my L.A. friends and families I've brought to eat here have loved it not just L.A. friends but friends from San Diego and TJ too..! Can't believe they've never heard or been here till our dinner get togethers. Thank you to the owners and specially to the cooks..! May god bless you all and gives you all the power and strength to keep making people happy and satisfied with their food experience.
