The Best Takeout Options From Long-Standing Montreal Food Counters | Eater Montreal

"Sushi Dep’s shelves are stocked with nori, Kewpie mayonnaise, colourful mochi treats, and even kimchi-to-go. Purists will love the simple, one-ingredient nigiri, sashimi, and hosomaki small rolls, but they’ve got a whole range of bigger rolls with crunchy shrimp tempura and spicy mayo, and poke bowls, too. Vegetarian options available." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

Hidden gem filled with Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese and Japanese products. There are many cute snacks as well as there are sauces and noodles. I haven’t tried their prepared meals or anything from their menu but the items for sale are intricate and delicious . This store is a much needed addition to Avenue Mount-Royal!

Google
It's THE spot to go at if you're looking for snacks , onigiris, sushis, drinks, sauces, curry powder, instant ramen, pokebowl and so much more !! I've found a lot of my childhood snacks back when my grandma used to buy me candies and it bring back memories (*´ω`) I end up buying a box of sushi along with 2 calpico drinks and it taste very fresh and yummy 😋 I've been visited this place several times now and to my every visit I absolutely enjoy looking at the food they have available and the varieties is huge!! 💖💖💖

Google
Really fortunate to have this place across the street from my current work office. Straightforward, fresh ingredients, quickly prepared, can’t go wrong type of sushi spot. You’ll never be disappointed.

I was looking forward to trying their sushi Tokyo, cause they looked so fresh and flavourful on their customers’ pictures. I didn’t expect anything amazing, but this was just terrible. Both my boyfriend and I ordered different sushi types and they were all bland, dry and flavourless. The tuna wasn’t the bright red that I expected in the pictures, it was almost a colourless light brown/pink… same for much of the other fish. The snack options are good, prices are decent for those. As for the sushi, not worth the price. About the same as a restaurant which I’d rather go to.

Google
Interesting store …. Basic shelves …. Alloy a/ steel metallic shelves thru out. All items displayed as is but many more items from Taiwan and Japan compare to most other stores which mostly import made in china items. Decent price. Not overly expensive but not the lowest but really reasonable. The take out food section is also great for those want a cheaper choice of food for take out. Great in the summer as the street is closed for pedestrians and many resting and sit down places.

Google
This is a spot I consider a hidden gem as I'd never noticed or knew about it until a friend took me in there. There's so many options that you can't find easily elsewhere. Many stores cater to Japanese snacks, which this one has, but they also have many different types of ramen packs available, sodas, and my favorite, Japanese curry bricks.

Google
Incredible takeout sushi place. The proce is definitely worth the quality!! Combo L is their best option if you love hand rolls and sashimi.

Friendly staff, fast service. Great selection of Korean snack and ingredients, a bit pricey compare to the asian market.

Yelp
It was nothing phenomenal, but decent quality on a touch pricier side. It was cool that they offer Japanese (and other Asian) products through out the store so you could browse around while waiting for your sushi order. I happen to walk in when their "ready to eat" section was empty but looked like you can grab and go if limited on time. I may return if I happen to be craving sushi while in the area, but probably won't go out of my way to seek sushi from this place in the future. Also ordered lychee bubble tea with popping lychee bubbles...quite different than bubble teas from elsewhere...though I asked for "no sugar", I still found the drink too sweet.

Yelp
Been meaning to try this place out for sushi for a while now and I was pretty satisfied. You order by using their takeout menu (it's the same menu) and highlighting the sushi you want (this is great because you can take the menu to go after you eat so when you will want to order you already have a menu, also you can use the menu to re-order when you visit again). This place has very limited seating but that's because it doubles as a mini grocery store with tons of japanese food, snacks, drinks, etc. It's a super adorable place though and it is worth trying to eat in if you can. They start you off with a little salad and a tofu miso soup which are both delicious. We waited about 15 more minutes after for our sushi to arrive. You can also grab whichever drink you want from their fridge and they'll add it to your bill. Ordered the usual rolls that I like (avocado, salmon, sushi pizza) and everything was delicious I just don't think it was remarkable enough to warrant visiting often. Their quality was good but taste-wise some of their basic rolls I can get a AYCE sushi places and it's a better deal. The prices are very fair for what the quantity they give though so if going to an AYCE sushi place isn't possible, this is still good bet.

Yelp
We ordered take out from this spot and were very pleased by their sushi! Can't recall the exact names since we ordered a variety but they were very satisfying especially the ones with rice paper. They have a whole operation here with 5-6 people working at the counter and don't be fooled by the name as you will be surprised. I would definitely order again when I am in the area. Too bad they don't have one in my area!

Yelp
Way above your average take-out Sushi quality and flavour. I had been curious about this, after passing by a few times. Having a cool and creative name with DEP in it, this could have gone - either way - N or S. The place is quite chic and modern; decorly speaking, so that wasn't my real concern. More was it going to be on the dry and tasteless side or the more authentic - also not fishy smelling, chewy, bland and/or the like. The quick and dirty of the dep (handy side) of the story is this...reiterating from my top line. Pretty darn good for a non-full service (ie. sit down and be served place). Too bad all deps don't have Sushi this good - in fact most don't have it at all; definitely much safer for all. Glad they took the 'depness' factor out of their sushi.

Yelp
Super clean and modern spot. You can pick up to go or eat on site. They give you a paper menu and a highlighter to pick out what you want, always helpful! Our order came with a salad and a miso soup. I got sushi wrapped in avocado, both delicious and picturesque. The sushi is rather large, so perhaps 2-3 orders per person max. They also sell lots of fun Asian fair from exotic flavours of poke sticks to mochi ice cream.

Yelp
I've ordered a take out couple of times from this place and I am definitely impressed with their service and the quality of food. Don't let the name fool you, it does leave a lasting impression unlike any other take-out restaurant. First of all, it's inexpensive and they have a variety of different sushi combos to order and second of all, the ingredients taste fresh and well prepared. So, it's definitely a place to keep in mind if you're feeling like ordering in on a rainy afternoon.

Yelp
Just like the name hints this is a Sushi-Depanneur (grocery shop) hybride. You can get a decent shushi for 4-5$ but you can also find a lot of Asain (mostly Japanese and Chinese) delicatests from sauces to candy. I taught the vegetrian Sushi (which was wraped with rice paper and not seaa weed) was too big (I like my Sushi bite size) but the other types we tried were perfect little sushi snack. If you feel you need a sushi stop and you are in the area this is a good option

Yelp
I'm glad I gave this neighborhood sushi place a second try! The first time, I got a combo and it was definitely below average. It was few basic rolls and two extremely basic rolls with only cucumber and salmon that amounted to nearly $18. I would rate that combo 2 stars, even the rice tasted bland, unlike the slightly sweet and flavorful rice that I would usually expect. The second time I tried this place, I picked out some rolls that sounded more interesting instead. They were all surprisingly good, and the Philly roll was the best of them all. It had so many layers of texture and flavor, and was unlike any other Philly roll I've tried. I would give that experience 4 stars, everaging my total rating to 3. Avoid the combo, get the more interesting rolls!

Yelp
Lovely little sushi shop in Plateau, with really good prices. Their miso soup and salad are really good! The sushis are fresh and generous portions. They also sell asian snacks as in a depanneur.

Yelp
Great sushi place! Always fresh, the service is good and efficient. Their poke are also very good, great portions.

Yelp
Good sushi prepared quickly! I placed an order for three rolls for take-out and they estimated 10-15 minutes. I arrived and my sushi was waiting for me in the fridge. Each roll had nice big pieces of fish that tasted extremely fresh. I found there to be a bit too much rice, which made the meal very filling. I will definitely return!

Yelp
Food is okay. The rolls are very thick and are more of an interpretation on sushi.. Service wasn't very welcoming. None of the workers smiled or seemed to be wanting to be there. If the price were higher I would've given it 2 stars, but we paid about $13 for 21 makis shared.

Yelp
I found the name interesting that's what drew my presence in . When you walk in you can see how busy the workers are preparing their orders . There are 6 tables to choose from to sit and eat. It was crowded. That's how you know the sushi is good. So it was my first time there and I didn't know how the process worked so I just asked one of the employees and they were pretty direct in their assistance. You take a menu highlight your choices then you follow at the cash register. I decided to eat there even though all the seats were taken so I sat where people made their command orders . I was hungry so it didn't bother me. I had the Saumon sushi with spicy mayo and the miso soup. It was average. I would like to try different types of sushi on the menu though . So I will go there again.

Yelp
Wanted to go for brunch at their famous neighbor. Horrified by the crowd waiting outside. So stepped into their place randomly. Their cone sushi is super! Nigiri sushis and sashimi are also nice.

Yelp
This is my favourite takeout sushi in Montreal! The sushi is very good, they use cuts of fresh good quality fish and vegetables in all of their rolls. It is also a good price for the quality! Their miso soup is really good if you're looking to have an appetizer. The staff is also very polite. They deliver to certain areas in and around the plateau, but make sure you have cash! I've never been disappointed with Sushi Dépanneur.

Yelp
This was my first Montreal sushi experience-- being from Vancouver, I'm a harsh judge when it comes to sushi. This place wasn't bad, it was like a cute little restaurant inside a convenience store. The choices were very very limited and were, in my honest opinion, all kind of the same thing. I had no idea that dynamite rolls were just a west coast thing; I asked and the waitress had no idea what I was talking about-- but they were more than willing to roll up a custom order which was nice. I also got to try my first ever sushi pizza. I had no idea that was a thing (Montreal/east coast thing?) but my goodness, it was yummy. It was pretty pricey for the quality and lack of quantity; I think with my friend we spent about $65. But I can understand why seafood would be more expensive here. Finally, just a general thought about the Japanese places that I've researched about here. I'm very surprised that they only either offer just rolls/cones or just hot foods.. But not both. Maybe they offer both at the very expensive $300+ places? Maybe I'll have better luck in Verdun.

Yelp
fresh but slow service i was getting take out and i ordered 2 small things took forever. my ikura sushi wich tasted good but had a fishy smell, my spicy tuna cone was perfect very generous. since its a popular place im assuming the sushi must be fresh. will go back for sure.
