Friends of Eater Miami Share Their Saddest Restaurant Closure of 2022 | Eater Miami

"For nostalgia, I’m choosing Doraku: one of the last local restaurants on Lincoln Road, where I grew up going in high school for happy hour bites before I was old enough to order drinks; its happy hour was a great place to down cheap sake and totally-fine sushi, and its closure tugged at my heartstrings and has left that western stretch of Lincoln Road feeling desolate." - Olee Fowler

Hidden gem! The service was great. Very polite and attentive. Sushi tasted amazing! There are so many different options and unique rolls. I tried 2 rolls I have never had before- they were both super yummy. You can tell the ingredients used are good quality and fresh. The atmosphere is nice. Clean and smells good. Prices are very reasonable for what you get. We will be coming back to try more rolls! They also have a happy hour menu and plenty of beer selections. Also the rice is actual sushi rice and some of the best I’ve had. I ordered the Carnival roll and the Crunch buddy. My husband got the Steak Kastu. Steak was not dry and it was the right amount of crispy. I don’t usually like Kastu, but I enjoyed the piece I tried.

Google
No wait which was incredible for the quality of the food. We went straight to a table, sat down and they took our drink order right away. This was just lunch so I got a coke and my mom got the hot tea. The food was so fresh (no weird smell in the place). The wait staff was super attentive and brought my food out quickly. The quality was ok, although my shrimp tempura roll pretty much disintegrated whenever I tried to pick the pieces up with chopsticks. I would rank it 3rd best sushi I've had, under Kawaii (#1) and Kabuki (#2). It was better than Harumi downtown because a.) the lunch special was an excellent price and b.) the atmosphere was brighter but quieter. The place was quite clean, and as soon as the people next to me left, someone bussed their table. I don't leave mine super messy but there were some soy sauce drips and one spot dried onto the table pretty quickly, which I felt bad about because there was no water to wet down a napkin and wipe it up. Either way I enjoyed it and for the price I would definitely go back. Also, I just got 1 basic roll (yellowtail, yum) and 1 tempura (shrimp, kinda small pieces) so if I go again I want to try some of these specialty rolls that other reviews are raving about!!! The garlic edamame sounded super good, as well as the pork fried rice and I'm always down to try new ramen too!!!

Google
The rolls were exceptional and the service was great - there weren't many people there so everything came out very quickly! Will be coming back for the avocado appetizer.

Google
Had dinner here tonight. Excellent food. Great price. I will be returning again soon. Very hospitable employees

Google
We were here for my big bday bash, and the food is incredible, udon, ramen, sashimi, fried veggies, yummy edamame, everyone found something they liked! I personally adore the Geisha Roll and the chef even made me a special roll on my bday! I had an amazing time, the atmosphere was great and the food delicious! Definitely reccomend ❤️

Google
This place is super under rated it’s hard for me to believe there’s not a line waiting outside the place because of how fresh this sushi is. The sushi cuts are so perfect and nice portion for the price too. The salmon I got literally melted in my mouth it was so fresh. The closest thing to this fish is a high end sushi spot I know in Phoenix that charges three times what they charge. This is seriously a high quality place but they make it very affordable.. 10/10 would recommend.

Google
This restaurant is completely serious about its cuisine. This place was recommended by a friend of mine, and I believe it is the number one place in Arizona. I highly recommend it. I forgot to take a picture so I took this picture while I was eating😅 This is probably where you would have to stand in line if you were at Asu University, which is a little closer.

Google
Absolutely phenomenal sushi spot. Their specialty and baked rolls were shockingly good. I cannot count how many times I've eaten here but I can't stop. Their sushi is significantly better than their competition at this intersection!

Yelp
Food 10/10 definitely exceeded what I was expecting. Idk why it's at 3.8 stars definitely deserves to be 4 or higher. Quality and taste was on point. Service 10/10 very attentive and chef Martin gave me everything exactly on point I asked for. Ambiance 10/10 Would definitely come back here when I come to Arizona.

Yelp
Food was acceptable, but overpriced. Good variety in the menu, but again, overpriced.

Yelp
Located in a place with so many choices this by far was best for us. The beginning of Sunday Fun day. The place is smaller but was cozy. The staff was nice and attentive. We started with a Sake Bomb, it was happy hour on Sunday! Yessss! Next, we order a cucumber salad and a Toosie Roll! The salad was light with so much flavor just like roll. Three for 3 so far. The menu was so big, I didn't even get a chance to check it out. Once looking at the Appetizer's I knew I had to try the baked mussels. The star of the show here. These were the best Mussels I have had in a long time. They were done different then what I am use to. Recreated with crab, scallions and few other ingredients, sauces then baked to perfection. I did want to say as someone that grew up near the ocean, I never had a lot of expectations for the sushi here (no offense to anyone we are just land locked) but for what they have I think my experience was pleasant. I will say the happy hour prices did seem to just be regular priced items. Reading some of these other reviews I probably would not try this place but I did so I shall talk about it. I would try other things on their menu! Oh! my beer for the sake bomb was fabulous iced cold and not flat! I'll take my wins whenever I can!

Yelp
Went to Sushi Doraku for their Bento Box Monday Special, which was $14 instead of $15.50. Positives- soup came out fast and was very flavorful. Tempura was excellent- crispy and light. However no onion not mushroom. I had a zucchini, 2 sweet potatoes and a white potato. The rolls that come with the bento were full size instead of half that is typical with lunch. The California roll was fresh. I tasted my husbands spicy tuna roll and he thought the tuna was fresh, it tasted a bit old to me Negative- beef teriyaki was so dry, very little sauce and no rice. A small bowl of rice is $3.50! We don't eat much sushi so Sadly we won't be back. I was hoping for a good bento box place closer to me

Yelp
Came here because where we were headed had terrible directions and the intersections in this area don't allow u turns. Well it was early only 5:30 so thinking maybe a roll on happy hour to try a new spot only to be supremely disappointed at the happy hour from only 2:30-4:30. Anyways almost walked out as soon as I saw that but it was daddy daughter date night before school so we kept going as she wanted ramen. Roll we ordered was okay and so was the sashimi but the broth was really good on the ramen. Service was good and very attentive as it should be since it was only is and one other table. I do however wish I could have been given a better explanation of what it was I was eating on the chef select sushi plate. I'll end with simply it was pricey but good if your in the area

Yelp
The food is always good. Service is fast Ambiance is a typical neighborhood restaurant. They play jazz music and there are big tvs for watching a game. This place can get busy after 6 pm on weekends. They recently remodeled the inside and added new dishes to the menu. The parking lot can be tricky sometimes because there are other restaurants next to it too, but I always find a spot. We come here very offer.

Yelp
Picked up sushi for family even after reading reviews. The absolutely most disgusting sushi we've ever had. Bad quality and taste. Better off getting "sushi" from the grocery store.
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
After trying many Sushi restaurants in and around the area we found this local establishment. This is now our go to restaurant for sushi. Great food, selection, fresh fish, plenty of options on the menu and superb service. If we have a hankering for sushi we head here.

Yelp
Food: I ordered the spicy garden and it was so tasty. It was spicy which I liked and then we got the yakisoba which is probably the best I've had. My mom ordered a roll wrapped in rice paper which I personally wasn't a fan of because of the texture. Drinks: we ordered the mango Soju and it was so tasty. You couldn't taste the alcohol it's dangerous haha Service: Wesley our server was great and had good recommendations. The sushi chefs were so friendly too Ambiance: small place but had the nba playoffs on which I appreciated

Abigail P.

Yelp
I got the fried sushi rolls. It was very slimy and had a overwhelming fish taste to the point I couldn't taste any of the avocado or cucumber.
google avatar

Carolina S.

Yelp
We ordered the lunch special chicken noodles, California roll and a special salmon roll with seared salmon on top and crunchy stuff and everything was delicious!!!! Waiter was very attentive and polite.
google avatar

Yelp
Good sushi that is fast with very friendly service. Great lunch specials! The sushi has always been very fresh. I usually order spicy tuna, California and Las Vegas rolls. Small restaurant, but never busy or unavailable seated. I'm surprised it's not busier every time I go, but I think it's just a bad shopping area with too many other lunch places. Been there almost 20 times and the quality of the food has been consistent and never had anything bad.

Yelp
Our favorite sushi spot in the west valley, their flavors on their rolls and generous cuts of sashimi set them apart from anything around. Plus they have uni, which we say if a sushi spot doesn't have uni they aren't legit. It's a small spot and the service is very attentive. The ambiance could use a little more art and decoration, but they remodeled recently, very clean.
google avatar

Yelp
Really delicious sushi can't wait to come back. The rolls are very unique and the sushi rice they use is amazing!

Jeff W.

Yelp
Service was ok. Nothing special. My wife wanted noodles and tofu rather than the chicken or other choices on the menu. The waiter seemed confused as to whether they could do it. He left and then someone from the kitchen came out and said they would upcharge to include the agedashi tofu appetizer! Seemed outrageous to simply replace a protein at that price but whatever (in the end they added $4.50 for the substitution). I ordered the sushi combo. I thought the fish was fresh but the rice seemed "gummy" and starchy. Not sure why, but it took away from the meal. Prices were ok. Not too expensive. Very extensive menu with lots of roll options.
google avatar

Rona L.

Yelp
I was on the hunt for a new sushi place. I read the reviews and decided to try it. I ordered a spicy scallop roll and Hamachi Kama, my friend ordered the veggie Soba Noodles. My food was so delicious and fresh and my friend loved hers as well. The menu is huge, so many options. For desert I ordered GreenTea ice cream. It was a Sundae. 3 scoops of ice cram, 3 scoops of whip cream, chocolate drizzle and cherries. Wow, I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Rusty P.

Yelp
Wasn't bad but it wasn't great for the price. For a small place I think they try hard, but they're going to need to be stellar if they want to charge what they are currently asking. They're charging premium and I feel like I've had better grocery store rolls.
google avatar

Bobbi Jo E.

Yelp
Their food is a bit too spicy for me, but my son likes it. It's a small place. Been there twice and there was always a table available.
google avatar

Dolores D.

Yelp
Came here with my friends. Took them awhile to get our order. We had to ask them and it wasn't that packed. They love the sushi here but I'm not a sushi person. I got the chicken fried rice. It came with miso soup. Nothing special about this meal. We also got the cannon ball for appetizer and it came with the food and they came out cold. Told them and they cooked it more. When it came back I tried it and it was disgusting. Tasted like cat food or something. Maybe I will come back to try something else.
google avatar

Yelp
Worst sushi ever! Should've read the one & two star reviews and the owners defensive, nonsensical responses. Blaming the customers for bad sushi quality. Have never had such NASTY tasting, poor quality sushi. Even the chop sticks are thin and broke. So many reviews stating the same but yelp buries them. Won't ever come back to this gross little place.
google avatar

Rebekah S.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite sushi spots! It's always fresh and great customer service! They've def gotten more pricey lately... You can expect to pay about $100 for two ppl. No alcohol, 2 rolls and some sashimi. But it is delicious! They used to be very busy. Lunch seems to be the quietest time to go in and try them out! Delicious yellowtail, crab, lobster, or scallop bakes, spider rolls are best in town, Amigo roll... tone of delicious specialty rolls! Yum!
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
Really good sushi. Can't believe I have never been here before and I'm always looking for a good sushi joint! The happy hour is unbeatable as well. Very affordable fresh rolls. Lots to choose from, there's something for everyone.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
This amazing place a veritable plethora of options from a large selection of appetizers, udon soup, curry udon, fried rice dishes, curry plates, yaki soba, ramen, yaki udon, and a wide selection of sushi. I decided to try out their wonder salmon roll, beef fried rice, cucumber salad, and their sayuri sake. I'd definitely recommend the sushi as it best part of the meal. The sake was also superb. The cucumber salad and fried rice were above average. If I ever came back here again, I'd focus on the sushi. Place is a bit pricey. I ordered extra so I could take some food home; it cost $67.64 (including tax and tip).
google avatar

CheRich R.

Yelp
Clean restaurant although we order to go mostly. The crunch roll and spider roll are my favs. The soup and salads never fail us. We particularly love to order and share the salmon nigiri! This is a must try if you love sushi and great service.
google avatar

Kassandra S.

Yelp
I've been to this place several times now & I love it. It's small, and doesn't look like anything over the top but the food is amazing. I've eat their Yakisoba noodles (which I'm general I'm not a fan of), had a bento box (meat, fried zucchini, crab/California rolls, salad), calamari, and eat their fried rice regularly. The food always tastes so fresh! It has great flavor, it's fresh, and always looks picture ready. I've picked up to go and eaten there and the service is always excellent. I'm so glad this spot opened,

Yelp
Good rolls. Got the screaming roll and flaming dragon. Big big rolls, filling, but not overloaded with rice.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
Today was my first time dining here. I have no idea how I ordered theee items and only liked one. I ordered a spicy scallop hand roll, which was good and two other rolls off of their happy hour menu. The pieces were cut a little too big for my mouth so it was a little uncomfortable to eat. Also whatever the "crunch" topping they use is not my favorite. Left a horrible taste in my mouth and I absolutely love sushi. There are around 3 other sushi restaurants in the same vacinity that I will continue to enjoy.

Yelp
Unpretentious sushi spot on the Upper West Side of Peoria. The interior isn't much to look at but the sushi is always fresh, firm and flavorful. It's my 'go to' sushi spot when I'm by myself or with my teenage sushi accomplice and want good, reasonably priced sushi. They have fun Bento boxes and ramen as well as a full menu of other Japanese specialties. The staff is attentive if not overly friendly. The wine list is unimpressive so have a sake bomber or a cold Sapporo with your sushi. The miso soup is simple yet the umami flavors are a perfect start to your meal. Lunch specials and combos are minimal. My favorites are the * Unagi Nigiri (freshwater eel wrapped in seaweed on a small roll of rice) *Spicy Garlic Edamame * Sunset Roll - Spicy crab, salmon & lemon * Amiga - Crab w mango sauce & green 'salsa' * Onion Crunch * Doruku #7
google avatar

Yelp
Closed on Monday's. Sunday-Tuesday Happy hour 2-5 and again for the last hour before closing. Quaint space, perfect for a date. Good sushi. I went by myself or I would have tried more. The onion crunch roll was awesome and I would get it again.

Jax S.

Yelp
My and my family wanted to try something new and stumbled in to sushi Doraku. Now this is a go to spot for family dinners and gatherings. The staff have great customer service and are always friendly. The interior is very nice with two big tv's on either side of the restaurant. Overall an amazing restaurant I would recommend
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
Overall experience was pretty good. The highlights of this place is the spicy tuna and the quality of the rice. This said, I think this could be a 5 of 5 if some things were different. The toro was a dead grey color. One of the servers tried to explain that the fish turns grey after a while. We eat toro like it is going out of style, grey toro when it is supposed to be pink is a no go. The second issue was the service. The waiter messed up our order three times to the point we felt it was intentional. We ordered sashimi, we got nigiri, we order tuna, we got salmon, we order shrimp, we got more salmon. Didn't find out till later that the uni I ordered was out of stock.
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
If there was an option for zero stars I would have pressed it! $5 for a side of sushi rice that would have maybe made half a roll. Rude as well. Will never go back. Sushi average at best.
google avatar

Ashley N.

Yelp
Best Bento Box!!! So yummy..great service as well. Highly recommend to any sushi lover!

Tara B.

Yelp
Never had a bad experience here. Sushi is well priced and extremely fresh and delicious every time. Other dishes are not as fresh or good as the sushi. I wish they would improve the quality of their ramen and noodle dishes. Rude owner, but very kind and friendly staff.

Liz B.

Yelp
They have an amazing lunch special! Great prices, great quality, you get a ton of food, staff was super nice. My fav lunch spot!
google avatar

Garrett M.

Yelp
My family and I come here at least 1-2 times a month. The reason we come back is because the food is 5 stars. It is really good and fresh. If we could give an overall ranking, it would be 2.5 stars. The reason being is that the service here is 0.5 out of 5. If they knew how to train servers properly, this would easily be a 5 star Yelp restaurant. The servers are always in a hurry when taking your order and walking away when you're not even finished speaking. They very rarely check on you for refills. I really hope they can turn it around!
google avatar

Logan R.

Yelp
Went here for lunch with my family the other day and we were pleasantly surprised! Food was steaming hot and absolutely delicious! I'm almost embarrassed to say that I had never had real ramen until I tried it here, but, oh my gosh- SO AMAZING! I'm totally hooked! I don't know how we've waited so long to try this place! Each of our three kids found something they loved as well! If you haven't tried this place yet, DO IT NOW!
google avatar

Gopal I.

Yelp
We were here on a Sunday afternoon craving for Ramen. Ordered Vegan Ramen and Veg fried rolls. The staff was very polite and helpful. We asked for soup spoons but they didn't have it for COVID reasons, so we had to stick to plastic spoons. The staff came to our table and explained why they didn't have soup spoons. It was a great customer focused gesture. The food was adequate and tasted good! Overall, definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
I've been craving sushi so bad this week since getting home from my trip. I do have a favorite spot, but didn't feel like driving so far and I'm always down to try some place new. I came across Sushi Doraku and decided I'd give them a try, which worked out great since I had other things to do in the area. The shopping center it's in tends to really be chaotic depending on time and day, lunch time is definitely a hot mess. I had to park pretty far out in my truck and was nearly hit a few times walking to the restaurant by impatient speeders whipping through the lot. It is a very small location with a couple small tables outside. Once inside I was greeted right away and told I could choose where to sit, given some menus and drink order taken. I noticed right away that the decor, paint on the walls could use some touching up. While not the best to look at I was more concerned with if the sushi was good or not. From most of the reviews I was confident it would be. I asked the waiter a few questions about the spicy roll options and decided to try out the Spicy Garden Doll as well as your basic California Roll and their edamame offered on their yelp check in for half off. There were two sushi chefs working so it came out quickly. Edamame was salted well and delicious. Both rolls looked great, but the Spicy Garden Roll almost looked to beautiful to eat...who am I kidding? I went to town ha ha . The waiter had said it was spicy, but not as spicy as a few others. He was right I'm sure there are hotter ones, but this one did have quite the kick. It was delicious. I'm not a huge fan on California Rolls..to plain for me, but this one had great crunch and tasted fresh. Hands down the Spicy Garden was my favorite though with spicy tuna, avocado, shrimp tempura, tuna, cilantro and jalepeno with special sauce. The temperature of the sushi was good as well. I don't like when sushi is overly warm, it was not super cold but just the right temp. Service was good and I never had to ask for anything. Location was clean. They also have happy hour pricing before 2pm on quite a bit of items. I'd come back again when in the area just to try more of the specialty rolls.
google avatar

Erin Tevis T.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the food here definitely recommend great service and food. I got someone's watching roll so fire.
google avatar

Natalie D.

Yelp
Not very impressed. Food and service were just average. We got the yellowtail nigiri, climax roll and the spider roll. Nothing to write home about for any. Sadly I don't think I'd return.

Devin F.

Yelp
Smaller space but still very nice and good food. Great service. Had a couple signature rolls and a couple entrees. The garlic crunch roll was a bit spicy but not overpowering, good flavor and very nice presentation. The Red Island roll was a sight, should have snapped a pic but it was so mesmerizing I forgot to. The sweet potato topping was neat and had good flavor and texture. It was also one of the coolest displays. Very good soba noodles, had the veggie soba, not greasy like other places. Perfectly pan fried and fresh veggies.
google avatar

Rebekah D.

Yelp
I drove about 35 minutes each way to pick up food from here. I was like, omg this better be good It was. I purchased 2 orders of calamari. It was perfectly cooked and tasted amazing even after my drive home. The batter is thin and crisp. The golden avocado- I have been in search of this for ages. Not many places make it. It's avocado, crab mix and spicy tuna, deep fried. It was perfect. The batter was thin and crisp, and it was exactly what I wanted. Superman Burrito- it's a thick roll stuffed with avocado, tuna & salmon with a spicy dipping sauce. The ratio of fish to rice was amazing. It wasn't mostly rice, which is what a lot of places do. I could do without the dipping sauce, as I prefer wasabi & soy sauce with it, but I loved it. I also bought spicy scallop nigiri. It was everything. The spice was not too much to mask it, and it was exactly what spicy scallop nigiri should taste like. It was totally worth the drive, I loved it. I can't wait to go back and eat my weight in sushi again. Don't miss this amazing place!

Melinda T.

Yelp
We came here to have a birthday dinner. We bought a cake from Cold Stone Creamery because it was just a few stores down, and we had to ask the ice cream store to hold it until we were ready to serve because the restaurant didn't have room. The food came out fairly quickly. The appetizers came out first. The squid salad seemed sort of small for the price. Then came the rolls and sashimi. The rolls were pretty good, but the tuna sashimi, specifically, wasn't very fresh. We added the hamachi kama, and this one hit the mark. It is typically grilled and therefore less fishy, but this was the opposite. Overall, sushi doraku was ok...but not quite worth the higher price tag.
google avatar

Wal A.

Yelp
I ordered the ramen here and udon tempura, I have no idea about he quality of sushi but the ramen is actually watered down packaged ramen(its either shin or nuguri trust me im a college student that lives off of these packaged ramen) and same with the udon, tasted watered down and tempura was mediocre. I was in shock when i figured that i paid $9 for pack ramen with cheese.
google avatar

Brooke G.

Yelp
Best quality fish in Peoria, excellent and super sweet service. Definitely my favorite place in phx so far.
google avatar

Samantha K.

Yelp
Haven't experience purple sushi. Seemed like the rice was put into a blender before adding it to each roll. Didn't hold the rolls together either. My husband asked the server why the rice was purple and he didn't quite like the taste or consistency. The server came back to our table letting us know that the rice was a "superfood". We didn't go to sushi looking to eat a superfood, but Oh-Kay.. Music was obnoxiously loud! And the lights were so dim for lunch.. maybe they don't want their customers to get turned off of the purple superfood rice? The deep fried tempura Las Vegas roll was one of the better rolls we ordered. But, I don't really consider a tempura roll Sushi. Next time we'll stick to Squid Ink.
google avatar

Craig Z.

Yelp
Everything we tried was great. For the most part the prices were around average. I would have given 5 stars if the server with the ponytail wasn't such a tool. There was a younger guy bussing all the tables and he also took few parts of our overall order. He was very pleasant to talk to, was informative and super friendly. The other too cool dude could take a lesson from him, just saying.

Steve P.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! food was of great quality and the service was impeccable! Definitely recommend this establishment.
