Oh, how I want to love Sushi Enya! With no reservation and only a little time before heading to quilt club, I arrived right at opening (5:00pm) and snagged a seat at the sushi bar. The menu is extensive, and as usual my eyes were much bigger than my stomach as I ended up ordering more than I could comfortably finish.
I started with the Tuna Crispy which I believe was on the happy hour menu for $13.80. The tuna itself was fresh and flavorful but the crispy rice underneath was underwhelming and didn't quite live up to the rest of the dish. The real star of my meal was the toro hand roll. It was melt-in-your-mouth perfection, the kind of thing I could have happily eaten six of if my wallet would've allowed. I also tried the daily roll of the day (on happy hour for $19), which came with an impressive number of pieces and I left truly stuffed - like very, very stuffed.
Where Sushi Enya lost me was in the execution and atmosphere. While the restaurant itself has the look of a polished, modern and fairly fancy sushi spot, the staff did not match the vibe. Employees were casually chatting about their weekend plans within earshot of diners, and at one point a plated roll nearly slipped off the bar as a chef tried to hand it off to a server. There was also an employee working behind the bar who was very clearly still in training, and while everyone has to learn somewhere, I'd expect training at a place charging this much per roll (even at happy hour prices) to happen away from the eyes and ears of the customer...
In the end, I left full and satisfied with the food, but unfortunately not wowed enough to rush back. With so many great dining options on Sawtelle, I plan to explore other spots before considering a return visit here. The toro hand roll is worth remembering, but for now, I will have to roll onto other Sawtelle sushi spots.
