Fukumoto Review - East Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"Despite Fukumoto being about 6,548 miles away from Tokyo, this yakitori grill and sushi restaurant in East Austin will make you feel like you’re at a tiny izakaya on a busy street in Japan, complete with bidets in the bathrooms, sake barrels lining the dining room, and an open kitchen where you can watch skewers smoke and sizzle over binchotan coals. photo credit: Holly Dirks The stars of Fukumoto’s show are yakitori and sushi, and it can be tough to choose between the two. Fortunately, you don’t have to. Fresh from the grill, we love the skewered chicken options—thighs, hearts, and meatballs in particular—but their savory freshwater eel is just as satisfying. The nigiri here is great too, with well-seasoned rice and large slices of fish, most of which were hanging out in a Japanese seafood market just a few days ago. Round things out with a bowl of spicy raw octopus in wasabi and an order of light and crispy tempura. Come here to impress a date, or if you’ve just finished watching any Studio Ghibli film and want to recreate one of the many iconic food scenes. Food Rundown photo credit: Holly Dirks Yakitori The yakitori section of the menu includes all the classics—chicken thighs, hearts, gizzards, meatballs, and tails—plus a few other meat options, including pork belly, eel, and salmon. Everything we’ve had comes out expertly grilled, with little crispy bits on the edges, and perfectly cooked interiors. photo credit: Holly Dirks Nigiri The quality of the fish here really shows—it has that texture that still feels just a little firm, but very tender. They’re also cut pretty large, and draped over some very well-seasoned rice, which makes each bite feel like it’s completely worth the price." - Nicolai McCrary

Incredible experience, it was amazing, we had the whole place to ourselves! Fukumoto-san is a master on his craft. The quality of the product is unmatched, and the aura of the place is the best set up to enjoy such good food.

We came thirty minutes after opening and surprised the chef (don’t think they were expecting anyone)! It was an amazing experience, this is our third omikase of our trip and the best one yet. We had the place to ourselves and the apprentice/waiter was so helpful and attentive. Loved the illustrated booklet to help us non-Japanese speakers! It is no surprise that Fukumoto has consistently received his Michelin star, everything was absolutely delicious and the quality was incomparable.

Chef Toshio Fukumoto was superb in his mastery of sushi and sashimi. Everything was just perfect and we were wowed many many times through out the entire experience starting from the appetizers. The staff was kind enough to show us the pictures of each item, and told us how to enjoy the food in the best way possible, with English explanations. Chef Fukumoto timed each course perfectly with the raw material, sauce and art of preparation of the food. All in all, it was such a blast and we would recommend the omakase experience to anyone who would like to taste the best sashimi and sushi possible.

This was the sushi restaurant that we dreamed of. Tucked away in a chic neighborhood, Sushi Fukumoto is an experience. Watching the sushi being prepared in front of you, you appreciate how much mastery and care is taken. The food was excellent, the service was second to none. This was unforgettable.

Mr. Fukumoto has been perfecting his craft for 40+ years - and it shows. He loves everything that he does, and teaches it even to gaijin like us. Everything was delectable, perfectly balanced, and with excellent instructions provided to us by the waiter/chef/apprentice who is lucky enough to be learning from such a master. It's a little tough to find so make sure you don't walk past! The sign is simply the name of the restaurant in Japanese. Like everything else about the venue - understated and tasteful.

Awesome experience! The staff spoke English very well and made us feel welcome. I agree with some of the other reviews that it feels a bit rushed, you definitely have to take your time and enjoy, even if the chef stacks two or three plates in front of you. The two tasting menus are a bit pricey, but considering this place has a Michelin star it's not so bad. They're about $120 USD for 13 pieces of sushi and miso, or the omekase which was about $160

Best sushi that I had in my life. The chief was really nice and explained each fish to us. It was a relaxing experience. I loved coming here and recommend booking this place if you don't want to line up at the tsujiki market at 3:30am.

Mr Fukumoto and his Team are absolutely perfect. We had the pleasure to order the Nigiri Omakase Set and every Single piece was of the highest quality. Its a pleasure to see Mr Fukumoto working on the food and the team explains every fish and how to eat it the right way. We travel the World for the best sushi places and this is one of them.

Yelp
Decided to take myself here for Christmas dinner. The restaurant is located in Shimokitazawa which is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Tokyo. It's tucked away downstairs so don't miss it! I got there a little earlier than expected but they seated me anyway. The ambiance is pretty quiet and intimate. The sushi chef has amazing knife work and I thoroughly enjoyed everything he did from cutting the fish to shaping the sushi to placing it on my plate. The fish was obviously extremely fresh and seasonal. My favorite was the shirako, delicious and creamy. Another one worth noting was the horse mackerel, it was fatty and yummy. I also got an additional order of uni in the end because it was from Hokkaido and I just had to. They also had a good selection of sake and the server speaks great English to give recommendations on drinks and also gave me the name of each dish. Highly recommend this place, it's definitely underrated!

Yelp
I came with my brothers and we had a great time here. We reserved about a month in advance. We're new to high-end sushi so initially, we felt a bit awkward in the beginning. However, the sushi chef was very relaxed and friendly. He doesn't speak any English, so staff would translate whenever he served us something. He also works at the perfect pace. He's very in tune to how fast each customer eats. Both staff speak English. I especially appreciate one of them, whose name starts with an M, for joking around and making us feel very relaxed in this environment. She was so sweet! Some highlights: -SHIRAKO: Cod sperm - absolutely creamy and delicious! -UNI: Usually not a big fan, but this was so savory and fresh - TORO: Melted in your mouth. Some tips if you're new to sushi: - Eat with your hands. The rice was so fresh that it fell apart quickly if you didn't hold it correctly. Turn the sushi to its side, then put it all in your mouth. - If the sushi chef already brushes something on the fish, don't add more seasoning, that's rude. - This is a meal that's about 2 hours. You're supposed to eat, then talk and drink, then eat. We finished in one hour which was a little too quick for them.

Yelp
Completely blown away by my experience at Sushi Fukumoto. First, Shimokitazawa is the last place you'd think to find sushi this caliber. Second, reservations are surprisingly easy to obtain, even the day before or day of on weekends. Quality was too-notch, however because we were the last seating of the week, some neta was all but gone or only enough left for a few of us. We received deep apologies though and promised to be taken care of at our next visit.
