The Best Montreal Sushi Restaurants | Eater Montreal

"Chef Haruo Ogrura helms the kitchen at this new downtown sushi destination, bringing more than three decades of experience with him. Gear up for an assortment of stunning sashimi and creative maki, like the restaurant’s namesake Hidden Fish roll, made with bluefin toro, burdock root, foie gras, and plum paste." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

Google
So happy I discovered hidden fish because it is by far the best Sushi in Montreal. It is a vibrant yet cozy spot with an extensive and authentic Japanese menu. There was not one menu item ordered that lacked flavour or tasted generic. Each roll and sashimi ordered was unique and presentation was spot on. A must visit spot.

Google
The best sashimi in Montreal. Went there three times and everything is always so fresh and tastes so good. They also have very nice drinks. It’s the place I always recommend to raw fish lovers. We really appreciate the nice and cozy atmosphere too.

I finally made it to Hidden Fish , and it exceeded every expectation I had! This restaurant has been on my list for years, and it was absolutely worth the wait. From the moment we walked in, the service was top-notch. We were lucky to have Matthew as our server, and he went above and beyond by curating a tasting menu for us. Every single dish he brought out was incredible—there wasn’t a single miss. The attention to detail, the flavors, and the presentation were all exceptional. You can tell the team truly cares about their craft. It’s rare to have a dining experience where everything is a hit, but this was exactly that—a perfect 5/5. I can’t wait to come back!

Google
I don’t think I need to say much about Hidden Fish…😂 This is my favourite sushi place in Montreal. The quality here is amazing, it is pretty hard to find a raw-fish restaurant for this freshness in Canada with this price range. The dishes also have uniquely delicious flavours and uncommon but super tasty combinations. The chef just really knows how to surprises his guests. It is definitely a must-try experience if you are a foodie or just simply visiting Montreal.

Google
Delicious and fresh sushi and sashimi. Their premium sashimi with wagyu is mouth watering and every cut of fish is very flavorful. Their makis are also great and are a nice combination of texture and flavors.

I recently visited this sushi restaurant and had a mixed experience overall. The ambiance was a definite highlight—stylish, relaxing, and perfect for a date night. In terms of food, it was a bit hit-or-miss. The otoro nigiri stood out as exceptional—buttery, fresh, and beautifully presented. Comparable to ones I’ve had in Japan. Unfortunately, the sashimi was underwhelming, lacking the flavor and texture you’d expect at this price point. The maki rolls were decent but enjoyable enough. The main drawback was the slow service. While the staff was polite, the wait times between courses felt too long, especially for a Monday night. The server also didn’t bring soy sauce or wasabi/ginger the entire night. Final verdict: Come for the ambiance and the otoro, but manage your expectations on the rest of the menu and service speed.

As someone who has worked as a sushi chef, I've had my fair share of incredible seafood. But this place completely blew me away. Every single bite had me saying, wow that's the best I've ever had. The salmon, the tuna, the uni, even the rice.. The quality, balance and attention to details were on another level.

Google
Best sushi I have had. Whatever negative reviews there are, I would ignore them and try the restaurant anyways(as we did!). Service was impeccable, presentation was amazing, and the freshness of the fish was perfect. Will definitely return, and have already suggested to friends and family!

Yelp
As part of our gift and visiting family, we went out to Hidden Fish to get some sushi. As we entered the place, it was relatively moody/dark with non-descript music a la trance style that I've kind of heard in boutique trendy hotels that play in the lobby. We entered and they asked for our coats which helps with the servers being able to meander throughout the restaurant easily. The only thing was that when we left, they asked for a ticket and they didn't give us any tickets. So if you do give away your jackets, make sure you get a ticket. We were seated on the side which helps with the view of the kitchen as well as sitting next to the bar. We were asked if we wanted service in French or English and of course, because of me (*sigh* but I'm learning I promise!), we had our service in English. The person who served us was very knowledgeable in the menu and helped us understand the difference between certain sashimi platters. We got both the Sashimi Premier Platter and Nigiri platters. Most of the fish were okay, but a good amount had this jelly/hardness that felt like it was bad fish. Perhaps my knowledge of sashimi or raw fish could be wrong, but the otoro (fatty tuna) was actually worse than the chutoro which is the mid fatty tuna. I've had melt in your mouth otoro before and this was that weird texture. Chutoro was much better. The salmon was also good. We also had two rolls which were pleasantly good - Nobunaga and Natsu. The shiso paste in the Natsu was refreshing. The service was a little weird. Like it heavily slowed down at some point and it was like...uh...when's our food coming? We also were being poured sake very quickly which could be good in some cases but it was like they wanted us to order more drinks. Water was refilled pretty often. Overall, the food was good, the ambiance a little more trendy, the service kind of meh. It's not a bad spot to grab your sushi especially if you're out for a date night. Try it out!

Yelp
This place is tucked in on De La Montagne and a bit hard to find. It's also only open from 5pm five days too so no lunch. Food (4.5/5) - it's a pricey menu but they use high quality fresh ingredients with a modern twist to authentic Japanese sushi sashimi and maki. Had the Hamachi and Scallop sashimi and both were very tasty creations. Had Maki Natsu and Nobunaga and both were excellent creations. Service (4.5/5) - servers and host were both friendly and attentive and checked back in on me multiple times. Atmosphere (4.5/5) - it's a dark intimate restaurant with tables and bar stools and vibey music. Upscale look and feel. Overall (4.5/5) - I definitely enjoyed Hidden Fish and would repeat. It's a bit pricey and only open evenings but worth checking out!

Yelp
We visited this restaurant on recommendation from family members and we are also sushi lovers. Otherwise we likely would've missed out on Hidden Fish. Given the price point and number of options on the menu, we decided to be strategic and opted for the chef nigiri set (24) so we could share bites of nigiri with the joy of being pleasantly surprised. Some selections were better than others, but overall I was happy with the selection. We sat at the bar and one of the chefs offered us fresh grated wasabi as complimentary and it really upped the flavor profile of the nigiri. If possible I would request this even if it is an upcharge because it made a big difference in our sushi experience. Knowing that we had a big appetite the addition of the Maki Hidden Fish was a reasonable addition to have us feel comfortable. The Maki was balanced as I was concerned the foie would overly enriched the toro but somehow the other flavors mellowed this roll out. It's hard for me to recommend this as it's a pricier option on the menu and tastes fine but also wasn't like mind blowing. The interior is off the streets of Montreal next to a pizzeria and other businesses. But tucked in the building is a moderately sized sushi restaurant serving patrons at tables and at the bar. Overall it felt warm and they had a great selection of music the entire time. The chefs were diligent with creating and serving our tickets. At the height of our meal there were quite a few tickets in queue so this place definitely gets busy. I suggest taking recommendations from your server and ordering all at once versus ordering in rounds. Overall it's a decent location. Not bad but not like the best sushi ever, but a good place to go out for sushi with a group.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this restaurant on our first trip to Montreal. The food was outstanding! The fish was fresh, and the presentation was beautiful. The sushi chefs were friendly and welcoming and accommodated our special requests. I'm shocked that this restaurant doesn't have a higher rating. I've eaten sushi all my life, and this was by far some of the best I've had!

Yelp
At the recommendation of our concierge in Montreal, we had dinner at Hidden Fish Sushi. It was outstanding. This is an authentic Japanese restaurant (ie no "California rolls"). We started with the edamame with Togarashi & sesame oil. That was followed by the Tuna noodles (tuna, black cavier, sesame, yuzu kosho & ponzu sauce) which were amazing. We then opted for the "chef's choice" of nigiri and sashimi. They accommodated our desire to exclude a few items and delivered a fabulous selection. The service and attention from management was superb. For any sushi lover, Hidden Fish in Montreal would be a great choice of restaurant.

Yelp
Very good. Better than any fusion Japanese in NYC. The size of Makis are pretty big. And Sashimi is thick than NYC. I recommend the foie gras Nigiri and torched A5 wagyu sushi.

Yelp
Excellent food, amazing service and wonderful ambiance The best sushi, sashimi in Montréal It's a bit hard to find but worth the walk, airplane train, etc. you will love it

Yelp
The reviews made me believe this was the best sushi place in Montreal . However I got seated at the very back of the restaurant on a very uncomfortable stool by a plastic plant box that was falling over on the table .I am an 60 year old woman . Not the target clientele .The rest of the restaurant was under 30 . The waiter was very serious and did not smile once . The first sushis took 39 minutes to come . The rest followed at a decent pace . The sushis were excellent . The table was very small so we could only get one sushi plate at a time .We had to beg to get our water glass filed . The service and the decor of the restaurant made me give it 3 stars . Ryu on Richmond is much better .They treat you nicely and give you a good table even if you are an old woman .

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this place for such a long time, so finally we come here for a lovely date night. The restaurant is small but quaint and cozy. The decor is slightly unusual, especially the ceiling but it is absolutely very unique and beautiful. The service is 100 % excellent. Our servers were awesome, our water never gets empty from our glasses, always refilled. We ordered the sashimi platter, scallop homosaki and tuna tartare maki, the latter was the piece of resistance for us that we ordered again. Every sushi was fresh and so succulent. I see the hype of this restaurant, it is beyond amazing.

Yelp
The quality of the food here is awful, UNAUTHENTIC, and very bland. First of all, entrees came after appetizers and the first course (entrees) arrived 45 minutes after ordering. Not all of our entrees came at once so I ate after everyone's food was done. We waited another 10-15 minutes for my entree and another 10 minutes for the nigiri. None of us enjoyed our food and after we were done my group asked "did someone really recommend this place?" So embarrassing. Food: The Ebi Shrimp is SHRIMP COCKTAIL (2 pieces: $12)...for shrimp cocktail! I have gone to dozens of omakases in NYC and all over and I've never had ebi shrimp like this. So disgusting and disappointing. This was my breaking point for writing this review. The Maki Le Blanc says it's torched but only one piece tasted torched. So underwhelming and tasteless. When you eat REAL Japanese food you don't need to use a lot of soy sauce to enjoy it. The food here is so bland I relied on the soy sauce so i can have some flavor. I am used to spending this much money, if not more on food so this is not a complaint on pricing. The complaint is towards how awful the quality of the food was. I've been to local sushi places that was a fraction of the cost and it was better than this. I do not recommend this place at all, for the food, service, price, quality, taste, wait, how they operate, anything. I seriously wish I could get my money back. This place does not deserve it and I went to grab food after this at the hotel. Even a filet o' fish has more flavor than this place. Jeez, I've never been more disappointed in my life.

Yelp
I had an incredible experience at Hidden Fish, it was truly special. The ambiance is absolutely beautiful, and peaceful. It's probably in my top ten favorite restaurants for decor. The service was impeccable. Phet took excellent care of us, found a wonderful sake to go with our meal, and was both friendly, and professional. The rest of the staff was also very professional. Everyone knew what they were talking about, and the timing for each serving was perfect. As for the sushi - it is the best I have ever had. We elected to do chef's choice. I've never had such unique, yet authentic sushi before. They were also somehow able to know EXACTLY how much food to serve for six people. The salmon noodles were to die for, and I wish I knew the names of the other things we got. You can't go wrong with ordering here. From start to finish - miso soup, sushi, and dessert, everything was tasty, and perfect. I'm incredibly sad I don't live here, but I plan on coming back every time I'm in Montréal. This was truly and unforgettable restaurant.

Yelp
Ivre waited on us tonight and made the experience just great ! Hewas very knowledgeable on all menu items and made great suggestions - many off menu options were offered and we tried a few. Nothing disappointed us except pricing was a little steep. Overall a wonderful evening in downtopawn Montréal.

Yelp
I went to this restaurant on monday night at 7pm. The service was great but i have to wait 15 minute before the waiter asked us if we need some water and it has only 3 table total including us. Well it not worth it for the price we paid for the meal. Sashimi side was very good and fresh. Nigiri side was very bad because i expected something more beautiful or some awsome decoration on my plate for paying 120$. On the maki side well i don't suggest anyone to take maki with seewed paper because it very hard to chew. Well this place is over rated and over price for the food.

Yelp
I thoroughly enjoyed the sushi here. I sat out on the terrace and had the rolls in the pictures and a salad. It was very pricey but delicious and fresh. I would highly recommend if you are looking for good, fresh sushi!

Yelp
Amazing food and it came out in less than 15 minutes. Although the price was steep the waiter was amazing, he knew what he was talking about and gave us the best recommendations.

Malcolm R.

Yelp
Service was decent at best. Felt amateurish. Settings looks nice... sushi however, looked much better than it tasted. This place felt like it only caters to youngsters. Do not bring clients here. "Luxury Japanese Cuisine" ? only if you compare to sushi shop or Provigo sushi counter. If you really want to know what luxury is, head nextdoor. What a waste

Yelp
Authentic Japanese sushi at its finest. Chef Haruo Ogrura with 30+ years experience brunch this incredible menu to this restaurants. The sashimi premium mix .. are the best quality fish coming from Japan. The presentation is A+ From the plating to the service and right down to the bite ... this is an experience u don't find in most sushi restaurants in mtl. They do offer a raising menu as well! Fuji maki was one of my favourite.. but there wasn't anything I wouldn't recommend. Every item was different and if u know how to appreciate quality Sushi then this place is for u. If ur looking to get what u pay for with a quantity dinner and can't appreciate that quality Imported fish comes at a price then there are other Restos that are better suited.

Yelp
Had dinner last night with the family at Hidden Fish and the experience was top notch. We did not experience any of the negative comments the previous reviewers posted. Service was meticulous, fast, friendly and very attentive, more attentive than any other restaurant I have ever been to in a while. We ordered the premium chef's choice plates for sashimi and nigiri as well as some maki rolls. Fish was super fresh and melt in your mouth tasty. Some of the fish we did not care for but this is just our preference but the most important thing for sushi is it's freshness and it was spot on.

Yelp
My flight to Montreal got cancelled so I couldn't make it to my dinner reservation. I called and email the restaurant manager of my situation with supporting documents but he refuses to waive the "no show fee" for my reservation and explains if he makes it an exception for me he has to make it an exception to others to be fair. From my standpoint, i think the restaurant should consider waiving the no show fee for unforeseeable, legitimate reasons, e.g medical, accident, flight cancellation. Be warned for those of you looking to dine at this restaurant.

Yelp
Good sushi in a dimly lit space. Definitely more of a quality than quantity spot. Notably, we enjoyed the Hotaru and Ora King Roll. Would recommend for 1-on-1 or small group occasions.

Yelp
Discovered this place by browsing through instagram food posts and decided to give it a try. And now, it seems that I can't stop ordering from them. The presentation, the quality and the pricing of the food is just outstanding. Extremely fresh fish and beautiful pieces make it feel like you're trying their food for the first time, every time. Hidden Fish has quickly become my go-to sushi place in montreal. Instagram: @sushihiddenfish

Yelp
Japanese classics in modern surroundings. Restaurant is gorgeous and staff is very nice. Food is generally quite good, but I felt the dishes were missing a little something to reach five stars. It is very expensive if you just factor in the food, but worth it for the entire experience. I will go again.

Marjorie T.

Yelp
Very posh place. Beautiful decor. The food was delicious. If you are into sushi & good sashimi you will appreciate the menu. We came all the way from New York and enjoyed our dinner there. The drinks I felt were not filled to the top which really upset us. For $16 a drink, we want the martini glass to be filled a bit halfway through the glass. This is the only issue I had at the place. Other then that, our waiter Rez was awesome. But again, would have been nice if they made us at least one of our rounds of lychee martini past halfway through the glass

Robert J.

Yelp
Food was overpriced. So many better options in Montréal. My kid wanted a bowl and rice and they refused to give it to him. Very disappointing.

Yelp
My wife is the sushi lover. She stated with Albacore tuna, unagi roll and ended with Ora king salmon. I had the wagyu roll and loved it. One of the best seaweed salads I have had. Their Sake selection was terrific. Their service was attentive and the staff was very knowledgeable! A great recommendation from our hotel staff.

Dafna R.

Yelp
Will not go to to this restaurant due to the poor customer service I received even before going. I had a reservation to celebrate a friends birthday and she got strep throat. I tried to cancel online 39 hours before my reservation but could not. I called the moment the restaurant opened - still a full 27 hours in advance of my reservation - and was told, very rudely, that there policy is 2 days notice for cancellation and too bad. I explained that my friend was sick, I was still cancelling over 24 hours in advance, I was not screwing over the restaurant or patrons and understand policies but the manager kept saying they will still me. I agree with policies regarding cancellations in general but there is also such a thing as being human and understanding extenuating circumstances. There were also plenty of open reservations to note. If that's how you treat customers who are trying to do the right thing then I assume the service in restaurant is just as poor. The manager was rude, curt and unsympathetic.

Yelp
For $96 the Sashimi "Premium" has only 5 varieties of fish and 3 of them Tuna. If they were offered to me in a blind taste test, I would have guessed it's from an AYCE establishment. Sushi has more variety but the same sauce drenched just about every item. The place does good business though.

Mark A.

Yelp
I don't write reviews often but I feel like I should express my 2 cents. After looking on Instagram at all the beautiful food this restaurant has to offer I decided to try it. I am a maki roll type of guy and love to try specialities the sushi restos have to offer. I order a salmon tartar and 60$ worth of specialty maki rolls (3 set of 8 rolls) Salmon tartare: this was more or less 20$, I love tartare and this was the most basic I ever had. Really nothing specials, they provide a sauce you need to pour over and the fish was bland. It was boring and not worth the money. I rather spend it on a small portion over marcher 27 Maki rolls: I found the rolls expensive they were more or less than 20$ each. I expected it to blow my mind for the price I'm paying or at least a generous portion. Nothing special on the rollls, they were pretty basic, I think sushi shop would offer better for the amount you're paying, yes..sushi shop. The rolls were pretty small which was disappointing and really nothing special when it comes to taste. The menu makes their food sound elegant than it is and the inside of the resto is really Gorgeous. The restaurant is elegant which makes me believe the reason why the prices of the sushi is expensive for what you're getting. Sorry I had high hopes for this place which was disappointing and spent over 80$ for a meal that was valued for 50$. Sushi shop was better then this, yess sushi shop. Hope the resto considers my review and at least offers bigger rolls for the price we are paying, then I would reconsider.

George H.

Yelp
This place is truly the example of bad service and a very very slow one. If you want to wait hour and a half for a mediocre "modern" sushi this will be your place.

Miss M.

Yelp
My husband and I are visiting from the US and were recommended to go here for dinner one night. The restaurant is very hip inside. Romantic and posh ambiance. The quality of the sushi was very good. Our waiter seemed to know a lot about the food and did an excellent job recommending different types to try. It was a bit expensive, though we probably ordered too much anyways. Lol. Definitely worth it. :)
