Sushi Huku Japanese Restaurant is located across the parking lot from Publix in the Powers Ferry Village shopping center.
Sushi Huku is a standalone restaurant, and has lots of spaces available in the free parking lot in front of the business. Currently, no indoor dining is allowed, but takeout, curbside pick up and delivery are available. You can call in your order ahead, and the employee taking your order will tell you the approximate time when your food will be ready.
We called ahead and I got the shrimp tempura meal which comes with 8 pieces of shrimp, a green salad with a ginger dressing, steamed white rice, and miso soup. R ordered the chirashi, which is the chef's choice of sashimi, and it came with sushi rice, a salad (also with the ginger dressing), and miso soup. Although the menu states that dessert comes with the meal, we were told that dessert would not be included. We were told the food would be ready for pick up at 6 pm (last week Sunday). We got there at that time called the restaurant to let them know that we were there to pick the food up, so she said that she would bring our meals to our car. I parked the car in the lot just in front of the restaurant. Within a couple of minutes, a woman wearing a face mask and gloves brought a bag containing our meals. Knowing that shrimp tempura tastes a lot better while it's hot, we opted to eat there in the car in the parking lot.
Honestly, the shrimp tempura was great! The shrimp tempura batter was perfectly fried to a delicate crisp, wasn't greasy tasting, and the pieces of shrimp were long and delicious tasting. I was looking forward to eating the other seven pieces, and, for some reason, I started counting the pieces remaining ... one, two, three, four, five, six. Huh? I already ate one and I was supposed to start with eight, so I counted again. Uh ... I got shorted a shrimp, so I asked R to call the restaurant and let them know the order of shrimp tempura was missing a shrimp.
The phone conversation went like this:
"Hello, you brought our order to our car a few minutes ago, and we got only seven pieces of shrimp."
"Yes?"
"We were supposed to get eight pieces, but we got only seven."
"Yes, we make them to order, so sometimes we give seven."
"But the menu said that eight pieces come with the order, and I got charged for eight pieces, but got seven."
"Yes, we make all the shrimp fresh at the same time, but sometimes we give only seven, not eight."
"Again, the menu that we ordered from said that eight pieces come with the order, not seven."
"Uh, what do you want us to do? Do you WANT us to make one more shrimp for you?"
"Yeah, since we paid for eight and got only seven."
"Ok, it should take about ten minutes. Call us when you get here."
"We haven't left the parking lot. We're still in the car outside."
"Ok, I'll bring it out when it's done."
I didn't appreciate that 1) The employee tried to make it sound acceptable that we paid for food that we didn't get, and 2) There wasn't an apology.
We continued eating, and the employee came out about 15 minutes later with a styrofoam container containing two more shrimp, and gave it to me, saying, "I added an extra one in there." I thanked her and she walked back to the restaurant. Still no directly stated apology - ugh.
The shrimp, and the "extra" shrimp were, again, perfectly made and tasted great. The white steamed rice was on the mushy side, with more water in it than should've been in it. The salad was simple, mostly green, and the dressing was very good. The miso soup had good flavor, but was very salty. R enjoyed his chirashi, and it looked like it had a nice variety of sashimi.
Overall, for what we got, the price point was too high, especially considering that the online menu stated that dessert was included, but actually was not included. I also didn't like the way that the employee tried to let us know that it was acceptable that we were originally shorted in my meal, and didn't offer at least an apology. We both decided that there were other Japanese restaurants with high quality food and much better customer service that we would rather go to. This wan't one of them.
