"This sushi restaurant announced it was closing permanently right at the start of mandated dining room closures on March 15. The high-end omakase restaurant was a classic LA-style strip mall find from Tokyo-trained chef Ichiro-san with gorgeous cuts and a wide variety of sake. Sadly, Pasadena loses one of its cherished sushi restaurants amid the coronavirus shutdowns." - Matthew Kang

Been here a few times and this place never disappoints. First time was over 6yrs ago and frankly, still one of the most ligit sushi places in LA. Ichi is a skilled chef. Fresh fish. Good sake selection. What more can you say. Recommend the off menu omakase (~$120) You wont be disappointed.

Nice small sushi place. Had some nigiri and a roll. The quality of the fish was excellent. I will come back again when in the area.

My wife was craving sushi so on the way home from work we were passing through pasadena which by the way has a lot of good restaurants and this Sushi Ichi being one of them. To our surprise this is a jewel a great spot in an unexpected place. The sushi was of great quality, fried soft shell crab was so good, shrimp tempura was very good and the blue crab roll was excellent. We will be coming back here more often own and operated by Japanese the service was excellent! Highly recommended! Price and quality of food are comparable to other high end sushi spots in pasadena.

Soooo good! This is my special occasion sushi place. The fish is great and prepared very precicely for you. If you're a sushi fan looking for an interesting meal, treat yourself to a seat at the bar and sit back while the tasty food comes to you. If you're more into rolls smothered in sauce, maybe sit at a table or try someplace cheaper, because you can't taste the fish anyway.

My wife and I stopped by this restaurant on a Wednesday night and found the dining area fairly empty! This is a popular place so this was surprising! The restaurant is unassuming in a strip mall with a tanning salon, boxing training studio and a Dominos among other things. Once you taste the sushi however (get the sushi plate for $25 - great deal) you can tell that the fish is fresh and the rice is just right. Also the blue crab hand roll is really good, full of crab and not too much rice.

We’ve been coming to Sushi Ichi over the past year now and it’s our favorite local sushi bar to visit. The fish is fresh and they have fish flown in from Japan for their omakase. Japanese owned and very low key. Not the typical Americanized sushi bar you’re probably accustomed to wish is a plus for me. To sit at the sushi bar you’ll need to make a reservation for omakase (chefs choice). Otherwise you’ll grab a table and have access to the standard dish + sushi menu. If you don’t see a fish on the menu, don’t be afraid to ask as they might have it. Just don’t expect to find Americanized rolls here, they stay pretty true to Japanese flavors and dishes. A must try if you’re a sushi purist and like quality sushi/sashimi.

If you want every detail on your sushi plate to be Japanese and handmade, come here! We accidentally came for lunch on a day they offered lunch! It was great! It is expensive but worth it because everything is fresh (down to the wasabi) and excellently made!

Overall, the place was ok. The sushi was fine, tasted good, but nothing spectacular. The menu options are pretty minimal and didn't allow any substitutions. I felt $25 for a chirashi bowl was pretty expensive considering the quantity wasn't much compared to places I've eaten elsewhere. The waiter was pretty nice and attentive though.
