13 Best Restaurants in Nevada City and Grass Valley

"A Nevada City institution, Sushi in the Raw has been feeding locals and tourists since 2002 — chef and owner Kaoru “RU” Suzuki has been on the local culinary scene even earlier, opening his first eatery in 1993. Through the years, Sushi in the Raw has remained a remarkably reliable destination for top-quality sushi, offering a dazzling, thick menu packed with rolls and raw fish, plus rare Japanese standouts like soy-marinated fish heads. Fun gimmicks like spoons filled with uni and ikura, as well as the sneakily boozy cocktails, make any night here memorable." - Flora Tsapovsky

Every new friend or out of town guest we have brought in to dine here has left extremely impressed and happy and cannot wait to return. It’s been my favorite restaurant for over a decade and remains so at the new location!

Google
NEVER disappoints. Don’t come often because they’re almost an hour away, but it is ALWAYS worth the trip. Freshest fish, and a nice balance of traditional sushi with some new school rolls. Another thing I really appreciate is when their rolls have a sauce, the sauce is mainly smeared on the platter or in a dish, instead of drenching the roll, allowing you to choose how saucy you want your bite to be.

Google
Sushi in the Raw delivers masterfully crafted dishes with excellent service. Every dish is unique and finds a way to mix a broad range of tastes perfectly. The presentation and quality are unmatched by any other sushi restaurant in the area. Be prepared to throw down if you want the full experience, and make sure to book your reservation ahead of time. Ensure you set aside about 2 hours for dinner service.

Google
Chose this restaurant for my birthday dinner. Since they were closed Monday, we ordered takeout on Tuesday. Called right at 4:30 to be told that they would "need to ask the chef" if it was ok for a takeout order. Eventually, they take the order. When placing the order, we specifically told them that two of the rolls were for someone gluten free. They asked if the entire order needed to be gluten free, and we specified that it was just the two rolls. When we picked up the order, the rolls were all served precut together in one container, ruining my dinner. Their solution?? We had to ORDER MORE FOOD AND HAVE IT BOXED SEPARATELY. "On the fly" We spent $100 on the first order. We had to spend an additional $20 because of their screw up. Horrible customer service. I'm baffled.

Google
The service here is weird, very fake acting employees. Food is decent not amazing, portions are very small. If you’re trying to have a filling meal for two, you’re probably going to spend $200. Very slow service, non attentive. Weird dipping sauces for the rolls, insanely small nigiri. Nothing was bad but overall just not worth it unless you’re inexperienced. I think the inexperienced sushi-goer would be impressed. But if you’ve been around, you’ll know sushi Q is far better. Much bigger portions, better ambience as well as quality. Won’t be coming back unless I’m dragged there by friends/family. And when I am dragged there I’ll be wishing Toki, the true authentic Japanese sushi chef from sushi q not 5 minutes down the road, was serving me instead.

Google
Heard about it from a friend so I had to drop in and see for myself. Good service and great tasty Sushi and dipping sauce.

Kimchuon Tann

Google
Me and my husband been there many times we was there last Friday, the food was good we spend about $187.27 and we leave the tips $12.73 to make $200 even,a few day later I check my statement to I saw they charging us $217.27 on my account. Which means they put extra $17.27 ,the tip I leave $12.73 =$30 even, I call them to get explain and it a mistake maybe they has the same amount and put in wrong amount it doesn’t make sense for me why. I own the restaurant too and I know how to put tip money end of day like. I was disappointed and I will not going back, better check your statement and take the receipt.

Google
This might be the best sushi I have ever eaten, and I have been to a lot of sushi places. It is definitely a higher end sushi restaurant in terms of higher food quality, lower food quantity, better and more diverse ingredients, more elegant presentation, and higher price...but it is a worthwhile experience! For examples: their green tea comes with a little side of toasted brown rice to put into it (I'm guessing that's a more traditional Japanese practice, but it was awesome and I've never seen that done anywhere else.). They had an appetizer with thinner pieces of sashimi soaked in various truffle oils... seriously delicious! Some of the nigiri had green onion and ginger already placed on top of the fish to make a beautiful presentation. They also offered cooked fish heads...which I did not venture to try, but the couple next to us did, and it honestly looked delicious. We also had "spoons" which is like a type of poke mixed with rice, sauces and spices. A small dish but delicious! Anyway, I think I found my new favorite sushi place in NorCal for sure!

Yelp
I must say whoever Susan is, she must be a wonderful person. My daughter and I visited SITR last week and were promptly seated on the beautiful patio. I understand reservations are a must here so I was pleased with being able to get a table so quickly. We ordered up some crazy milk, miso and edamame while browsing the menu. We ended up with four rolls, two of which featured the beloved namesake, Susan. The Sweetheart roll is, to put it simply, inspired. Everything was so well constructed, balanced, intentional. The fish was fresh and the sauces were perfectly complementary. There is an attention to detail paid here that deserves praise. The staff are thoughtful, courteous and seem to enjoy their work. This is the best sushi I have had for some time, and I eat plenty of sushi. So my recommendation is: find someone you can love as much as this restaurateur obviously loves Susan, and then take her to Sushi in the Raw.

Yelp
We have been twice. The first time the service was so ridiculously slow... their excuse was they were short staffed so we gave it another shot. Made our ressie at 5:00 pm, close to opening, yet again the same experience as last time. My husband had 2 beers before we got any food, and he's not a fast drinker. The sushi was decent, but definitely not worth the wait!!There was no excuses to why it was so slow but we did tell the server and she did apologize. We noticed other people sat after us received their food before us. Very unorganized. When you are super hungry almost anything tastes good. Most certainly not worth the long wait! When Sushi Q opens back up after their summer vaca we will be very happy not to have to return to sushi in the raw. After seeing several reviews here with similar experiences, I can see the new owners just don't care enough to make any changes. We won't be back. Too bad...

Yelp
The spoons are amazing, especially the spicy yellowtail. So satisfying. Anything with scallops and truffle salt is amazing too. And the grilled salmon head is pure perfection. All the dipping sauce are wonderful and compliment the dishes so well. All in all everything we had was great. Service is a bit slow but attentive. Don't miss it!!

Yelp
Best sushi restaurant in NorCal! As a native of LA , my bar is set pretty high when it comes to sushi bars. We don't mess around here on Ventura Blvd But Sushi in the Raw really proved itself with their unique rolls, fresh sashimi plates and attentive service! My best friend who lives in Nevada city told me it took her 3 weeks to get a reservation here.... So you can tell this place is high in demand ..... and I understand why!

Yelp
Great sushi place; MUST RESERVE IN ADVANCE!!!!!! Great sushi place, the dishes are very fresh. The service is a bit slow to the point we had to cancel our last orders. Overall a great experience

Yelp
This place used to be great before the move. The whole vibe now is " hey you are super lucky to be here and if you're good we will visit your table" it's real bad. Bussers pour water and servers just don't "serve"( and when you ask and they finally grace you with their presence they're short and bothered, it's really funny) we've been multiple times, they're super pretentious, and aloof. With a very limited "sustainable" menu you just can't get the full sushi experience. Whoever purchased this thriving business is really sh!tting the bed, after 3 visits to the new space we're out, you suck. Peace

Yelp
I was expecting a lot more after seeing the high stars and reviews. The place was cool, the service was good/friendly for the most part, but the selection of sushi and the rolls was extremely disappointing. There was VERY little selection, NO TEMPURA (which was incredibly odd to me), the rice was not plain (it had some sort of flavor, possibly vinegar? Lemon? Hard to tell), no ice in water (tepid temperature), and just not what we expected at all. They did give you warm, lemongrass wet towels before you ate, which was very nice, and reminded me of how sushi restaurants in the past used to do it. The sashimi was okay, but very thinly sliced. It wasn't a terrible experience, but just unexpected and unfortunately a little disappointing. I really wanted to like it more.

Yelp
Having been to the old Sushi in the Raw a gajillion times, I was apprehensive that nothing could live up to the place Susan and Ru had created. I do think no sushi restaurant can replace it, but the new Sushi in the Raw did pretty good. I was legitimately fearful after reading reviews: tiny portions, shmucky arrogant staff and a crappy decor. Well, thank goodness some Yelpers are wrong. A new bigger space with some personality welcomes you when you arrive. The portions are ample and we didn't even get sushi but left so full! We had a delightful hostess and an even friendlier waitress. The inside is thoughtfully decorated with random Japanese items and the huge windows give great light. It was packed when we left at 7pm-ish. The new owners will obviously never replace what Susan and Ru brought to Nevada City but they sure are killing it as a bigger and new local restaurant. Absolutely we will return.

Yelp
I guess the word would be scrimp. Very expensive and very little actual fish. Salad was good. But if this is their version of shrinkflation, they are better of closing. We won't be back.
google avatar

Tracy D.

Yelp
Service and food were excellent. The only downside was that the rolls came out very slow. It took an hour from when we ordered to get our third roll. We ended up taking it to go as we were full at that point and ready to leave.

Tori S.

Yelp
Great food, everything was fresh (important for sushi) and well prepared. Pleasant patio, very good service.

Yelp
Have to say I was super excited about going to this place especially with all the wonderful reviews however that was definitely not my experience!!! Over priced for low Quality pre-frozen fish. Service was horrendously slow especially for us being the first people in the place. There was ingredients missing what I had received was not all the ingredients listed on the menu. They served yellow tail however once it came to the table was not yellowtail as a customer I really don't like being tricked to pay more for some thing that should be less They're popular sauces were very disappointing The meal ended up costing 160+ dollars for three people Needless to say not taste worthy or cost efficient. I get the same quality sushi at earth market for way cheaper.

Yelp
Was excited to try the place as I've heard good things. And this IS the best Sushi in town... unfortunately that isn't saying much. Merely adequate, yet pricier than most places in the bay area. The sauces are VERY mayo heavy or other single condiment heavy. (I can't remember the last time I actively removed a drizzled sauce). It's hard to rate the cuts of fish when they're only as thick as a quarter. An entire rolls worth of fish at this place is what you would get on 1 piece in most sushi bars. (Which begs the question, what was I even paying for)? Other than that, the ingredients were fresh. The spoon we got was quite good. The service was great, the floor staff was wonderful. 10/10 for those lovely people. The kitchen is fairly slow, and stagger your order, which can be a good thing depending on how slow you eat. But they are fairly busy seemingly every night, so as ex-kitchen staff myself, I get it. I was so hoping that this would be the sushi spot in Grass Valley for us, and they were good enough to try it again before making any final decisions. But on first impressions.... the food is ... fine.

Betty B.

Yelp
Dude. I've ordered appetizers at 7 They did not start arriving until 901. It legit took two hours to get out.
google avatar

Matthew M.

Yelp
Unless you have eaten as you walk in the restaurant and are not hungry, I would refrain from the odyssey of acquiring food at Sushi in the Raw. I now envy the couple who was turned away when we were sat because SITR was booked. I know if they drove back to the Bay Area, they received their food sooner than we did. It's not just the wait, but the refusal to acknowledge that this is abnormal. For our part, we found love, fell out of love, and united again during the 2 hour wait for our main course. Please do not be fooled by receiving your salad after an hour and fifteen minutes. This is a trial to see where you have come in life. I bid you a great journey!

Yelp
Sushi at a Snail's Pace: An Epicurean Epoch Welcome to a tale of sushi, time travel, and unparalleled patience, served fresh on a quiet Tuesday night. Spoiler alert: The sushi wasn't the main dish; waiting was. Our story features two leading ladies, our server and her assistant, adherents to the 'snail-paced' service doctrine. Their mantra seemed to be: Why rush when you can recreate the waiting experience of dial-up Internet in the 90s? Boldly, we ordered appetizer salads and sushi rolls simultaneously. Our order was accepted with an unhurried nod, presumably the time it takes to grow the rice and cultivate the seaweed. A full philosophical debate and 45 minutes later, salads graced our table. Enjoyable, yes, but when your leafy greens have a shorter lifespan than your waiting time, you start to question reality. Emboldened by the salad victory, we eagerly anticipated our sushi rolls. Another round of 45-minute waiting, I was half-expecting to see our fish evolve into amphibians. In the grand total of two hours, our sushi arrived. Tasty? Absolutely. Worth the prolonged anticipation? Only if you've signed up for the world's slowest sushi tasting. Our servers, seemingly unfazed by the epoch-length wait, barely checked in, nor apologized. It felt like an unwitting role in a slow-motion culinary drama. One star, earned by the sushi's taste. But unless you have a time capsule or fancy growing older waiting for your food, consider other avenues for your sushi cravings. This establishment isn't just about raw fish; it's a raw test of your patience.

Yelp
So nice to see the legacy being carried with such precision. We had our reservations about going to the new location with some mixed reviews online. I'm so glad we pushed past and went tonight! From food to service everything was as it was if not better?!? Fish is cut beautifully and thin, service is impeccable, and although I didn't see too many familiar faces in the staff, I felt right at home. Can't recommend enough the chef choice sashimi platter and the gold rush cali style! MIND BLOWING melt in your mouth! We will absolutely be back! We are thrilled. Thanks for keeping it alive.

Yelp
As a long time patron of the original Sushi in the Raw (see my reviews below of the previous restaurant) , I was finally able to arrange to visit the "new" store which had be re-located just a few months ago after being sold. I had 2 items previously on the menu, Cabbage salad and Susan Roll. The roll was quite good with its delicious sauce and fresh ingredients. The Cabbage salad a bit dry but ok. I also had the diablo roll which was interesting and also fresh. However, the restaurant was very noisy inside, making it hard to converse and the wait for the first course took forever. At one point there was 45 minutes in between items. Hard to keep a convo alive. And the restaurant was only half full. Rarely did the servers come by to inform us of status. Perhaps they were short handed. As my friend said, "an Epicurian Epoch" Am torn between how many stars to give this, and i will try this restaurant again because the food is good, however, next time it will be as takeout for which you also make a reservation. Just hope i don't have to wait 45 minutes again.

Yelp
Great food. Bring your own fly-swatter, though. The flies in this place are insane! Humans and flies agree: This is the best sushi in town.

Yelp
Over priced . Bad service . Dirty prep/ kitchen area . Mediocre at best sushi . Will not be back

Yelp
I went to Sushi In The Raw in their old location last year and it was delicious and memorable and knew I wanted to come back. I made a reservation and then went to check out Yelp reviews and honestly got scared. I told my sweetie to have low expectations because I was worried things may have changed. Honestly- it was just as delicious as I remember and Hailey (our server) was so sweet. When you come remember that this is intentionally slow food. They take a lot of time creating every dish and this isn't a place to come and eat a quick dinner. The uni scallop spoons were super yum and the Susan roll is a staple. Honestly, everything is incredible. I look forward to coming back.

Sheri R.

Yelp
We used to eat here all the time before they relocated. The food and menu was amazing. Recently I found out that their fish, specifically their salmon, is farmed, not wild. Because of that we won't eat here again. So disappointed!

Rita T.

Yelp
We had dinner at Sushi in the Raw a few weeks ago for my husband's birthday. We have never been so disappointed. We ordered sashimi and it was sliced paper thin - you could actually see through it. I thought it was a mistake, but it wasn't. We have had a lot of great sashimi and the slices are always at least a quarter of an inch thick if not thicker. The staff was friendly but the service was extremely slow. Their new location is drab and extremely plain. Not very inviting at all. Needless to say, we won't be returning. It's really not worth giving it a second chance.

Ana O.

Yelp
The best Sushi in town. Spicy miso soup is to die for. Fish has always been fresh. No other sushi around can match up.

Danielle N.

Yelp
Staff was nice, but they were not sure what fish was actually available. It was about half listed on the menu. Super slow service. The yellowtail collar was way over marinated, soy sauce masked the flavor of the fish. I had a spoon and edamame which were the only things I would say were "good". I don't eat rolls, so didn't try any. Seems like that is what everyone wants around here. The nigiri is super sad. The rice had way too much vinegar. The proportions are off imo. Little rice that fell apart , thin small slice of fish. I don't like super thick fish or heavy rice but this was way too small and the price high. We left hungry after $170+. I was told by a local that the restaurant was sold about a year and an half ago and the original owner is no longer there. This is not a place to eat nigiri. Sorry Sushi in the Raw, but I have to warn others looking for nigiri. 2 stars for Sapporo on draft.
google avatar

Whitney H.

Yelp
Yelp says this place is open until 9 (it's not) and on Spring Street. Google says this place is permanently closed. Their website said the restaurant has been sold to new owners and is on Argall St. The voicemail recording says to check their Facebook page and to leave a message so someone can call you back. AT NO POINT in this entire process on Yelp, Google, Facebook, or their website is it clear that this place is RESERVATION ONLY. No one answered the phone (which is understandable if they're busy) but the voicemail needs to make it clear that they do not accept walk-ins. "Reservations available on Rezi" or whatever it's called is not enough to clue people in on the fact that you MUST make a reservation in order to dine there. Really awful experience.
google avatar

Daniela H.

Yelp
a friend and I wanted to give Sushi in the Raw a try after it had been sold and moved to a new location. I called Monday and Tuesday to get a reservation, didn't get anybody and left a message. Nobody called back. On Thursday I stopped by to make a reservation in person but was informed by a grumpy employee who was rolling sushi that you can only make a reservation online. He asked me to leave my number and to expect a call. No call came and we went to the restaurant after it opened only to be informed, after waiting for 15 min that there was no room. I don't ever want to frequent this restaurant who treats customers so badly, no matter how good the sushi may be.
google avatar

Rod Z.

Yelp
This has been the worst experience I have ever had. Made a reservation in person went back the next day to find out we had no reservations and were also made to feel like we had been making the entire thing up. This place should really get there act together. You should never treat a customer with that kind of disrespect. We were at first told that they could take us in despite not being able to find our reservation in their reservations but then was turned away after taking a seat. The staff was rude and extremely disrespectful to my and my fiancé. I will never return to sushi in the raw and would never recommend this place to anyone. I guess customers come first does not apply at this place ZERO STARS 100%!!!!!! They did not even offer an apology or even a solution to the mistakes that they had made. This was absolutely the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. This place is a joke and was extremely embarrassing to sit and be told to leave a few moments later. I will be sharing this with the fine folks of Nevada County. Do not eat here Nevada County Peeps #boycottsushintheraw

Anthony K.

Yelp
I have never been to a restaurant that had more a crazy pretentious vibe that served such mediocre food. The sushi itself is overpriced and honestly doesn't taste that great. I have been to a lot of Sushi places, and its the most unremarkable sushi I had. They do try very very hard to make convoluted sushi creations that just taste weird and not good. The sushi tasted DRY (I know, right? how do they do that?!?) they have exactly zero side sauces that tasted good as well. The wait staff all look like they're prisoners to a crazy overlord, I felt sorry for them. I swear one was blinking morse code for "help" at me while we ate. Also, be sure to make sure they're open with weird days/hours they keep. The bathroom is dirty, its attached to a random expensive grocery mart, and don't lean against the fence outside or it will fall over and you'll maybe die. The End!

Peter B.

Yelp
Not at all like the old Sushi in the Raw. Service and ambiance below average. More like a tacky sports bar with cheesy Japanese posters on the wall. Old worn out chairs and dirty tables. A noisy grocery store in the same building really destroys the experience. You can't put a hachimake (bandana) on a bearded hippie and make a sushi chef out of him. Food mediocre at best. "Market price" nigiri was old, tasteless and grossly overpriced. One of three rolls ordered actually fell apart before we could eat it. Gas station sushi sounds better.

Yelp
Used to be amazing, not sure what's going on here now but nothing seems the same. The once smiling friendly and professional crew now seems to not be so aware of customers needs. The food was ok but not up to standards of past visits. The once fun and celebration like atmosphere has been replaced with unruly and loud children. The interior is nice at first glance but then the paint chipping off the chair stuck to my skirt and my table was sticky. I hope this changes as my family really used to love having special dinners here.

Jonathan T.

Yelp
I do not know what is going on here! The food is good. But, by the time we actually get our food, I'm not even hungry anymore, and I'm thinking cheeseburgers next door... I think this will be the last time I ever eat here. I can drive to Sacramento, get just as good Sushi, and get home in the same amount of time...

Bret R.

Yelp
We are long time residents in the area, and one of us knew the former owners for many many years: Ru and Susan. As many reviewers below have detailed, this once delightful and creative sushi restaurant has been rolling downhill since changing owners. I hope the new owners are reading these reviews and making changes. Otherwise, their investment will be going down the drain rapidly and the restaurant will be back on the real estate market. First, the reservation system is whacked. There was only one opening for Friday night, 4:45 pm. We took it because we love eating early. The restaurant was totally empty on the inside when we got there and there were just three tables occupied on the patio. By the time we left at 6pm, the whole place was less than half full! How could there have been only one opening? Owners may be losing a lot of business if reservation system is wrong. There were at least four chefs in the cooking area and five wait staff - more than enough to handle a few tables of diners. Mostly they had to stand around and hope that someone showed up. Meanwhile, how on earth did the food take so ridiculously long to make it to the table?? We very much enjoyed chatting with two or three wait-staff. They were friendly and courteous. They certainly weren't busy, so the delay in food delivery must have had more to do with the kitchen staff. Or maybe they were trained to only put one order in, wait for diners to finish it, then put the next order in, and so forth. NOT an efficient process, if that was the case. Yes, the new location is great and the capacity is improved, but what does it matter if the food has also gone downhill? We are retired, love sushi, and travel around the western states visiting restaurants of all types, but especially on the lookout for great sushi. We were shocked to see how aggressively this restaurant has raised its prices and reduced the amount of fish they deliver in the orders. We've not seen such skimpy pieces of fish at any other sushi restaurant we've visited - and that is saying something! Our intent here is to be constructive in our criticism. We don't have much sushi to choose from in the area so we hate to see a once successful sushi spot deteriorate toward oblivion. New owners: take action immediately or suffer more losses. We won't be back any time soon. Hopefully you can win back your former customers with the right changes.

Yelp
My dad was in town and we decided to check out sushi in the raw. The service was fantastic, they were friendly and attentive. We asked the waiter to suggest some rolls and we were not disappointed. Our beers were never empty and we left will full belies. Everything tasted fresh and we truly enjoyed our experience. We will definitely be back!

Devin M.

Yelp
As self proclaimed sushi a-"fish"-ionados my wife and I have been traveling to find the best sushi rolls we can, we were surprised to find our favorite right here on our doorstep in Nevada City. The shooters were fantastic, drunken yellowtail and quail egg (trust me it's incredible) per recommendation via the friendly servers. It's great when it's obvious the waitstaff are familiar with the menu and I can't blame them, everything tasted fantastic. The fish was fresh and the sauces delicately seasoned, we had sweetheart which was both inventive and familiar, reminiscent of your classic crazyboy or caterpillar troll with a good balanced zing. And the smiling Buddha was a comfortable warm concoction of seared meat and baked cream cheese which is the perfect roll for those still tentative on the idea of sushi and was welcome on snowy day like today. We got reservations and the room filled quickly but the tables were spaced well and kept us feeling cozy in the storm without feeling distracted by our elbow space. Perfect experience, A new favorite place to call takeout on the way home from work.

Yelp
Amazing spot for a date night. Cute stylish decor, great ambiance, stylish but not too elegant. Servers were attentive and knowledgeable. Loved the shooters- would definitely have them again. Quail egg is smooth and silky, mango and salmon is refreshing and so fresh. I had them drunk- great pairing with the alcohol. Absolutely loved the variety in their sushi rolls. Great use of shisio leaves and spice. Also big fan of their spicy edamame- I think it has sesame oil. The truffle sashimi is amazing- must have odd you love either of those things. Melts in your mouth, rich flavor.

Yelp
Finally, was able to eat here...and could not have been more satisfied!!! It's been years coming, their reputation, even from friends that spoke so highly of this joint - wasn't even slightly disappointed. My wife and I traveled up from Sacramento, just to eat here, upon dinner reservations for our wedding anniversary, we sat outside with our two little dogs. The restaurant is located a block from the main strip of shops, hotels and what not, super cute, quaint, and a cozy little spot. The staff was way friendly, very welcoming (even to our very sweet but loud dogs [one's a beagle!]), they brought out waters after greeting us, and giving the run down since it was our first time. We enjoyed hot sake, sooo many shooters - that were all insanely amazing. Will not even start breaking those down, for we ordered so many/different types and they were all wonderful! Continued with the Fish Head (something that I'd be way to intimidated to try to prepare - another 1st timer) that was astounding! Enjoyed a spectacular roll, and finished off with some 'spoons' which were absolutely heavenly! The service was exceptional, very kind and courteous, and even the other patrons were super friendly, with most of our table neighbors being so pleasant - as we all seemed to be enjoying our evenings! Can't wait for our next time, already told my family we'd all be going back there together - obviously can not speak highly enough of this place. Cheers!

Yelp
Wow what a disappointment. Haven't been here in seven years. Can't believe what a terrible turn the new location has made. Rancid quail eggs for shooters as well as bad fish. The lovely Susan roll even, which was standard when coming here because the original chef made this roll for his wife, now has my stomach sick as hell. Very very sad about this restaurant taking such a downhill turn.

Yelp
Was not allowed to place a carryout order. I was really looking forward to sushi night while in town. I am not brave enough for outdoor dining just yet. FYI : They do not accept orders for same day carryout during posted business hours . You have to call early between 2-4 pm before opening hours and either leave a message or speak to the host if available. This and other policies are posted on their website https://sushiintheraw.net which is not linked here or google. You have to go to their Facebook page to find the website. Their FB page also doesn't stipulate their carryout policy.. I really try to do my homework in the age of covid but left feeling like "no soup for you"

Yelp
The worst sushi experience my wife and I have ever had. The only thing we tasted was salt, salt and more salt. and total lack of service. The real reason for lack of service was because they only had one person making sushi and not making it well at all. Terrible everything. We don't know how anyone would rate this place anything but awful. We used to go to the old place and this place should be ashamed to call it by the same name. Never again. Relays has better sushi and we hate theirs as well

Yelp
Love this place, super fresh and delicious sushi and sashimi. The drunken shooters and heavens spoons are a must try.

Yelp
Wonderful take out from our favorite sushi in Nevada City:) Always super fresh and delicious, Sushi in the Raw never disappoints. If you are flexible with your dinner time as we usually get out of work late, it's so easy to call and order. There's no issues with finding parking anymore, it's rad. The Susan Roll is my absolute favorite, you will be so thrilled if you order it.

Yelp
Can't wait to go back, the sushi and variety was beyond outstanding. I've been a sushi eater for many years and this is of the best. Sincerely, Bob Norman

Yelp
Great service but awful sushi. You should just get sushi from the grocery store instead of paying absorbent amount of money for grocery store quality sushi. Very disappointed in the food but thankfully the server was sweet. Definitely would never recommend and even discourage from eating at Sushi in The Raw

Yelp
Having lived in Japan and the Bay Area, we were leery about sushi in the foothills. However, Sushi in the Raw is the real deal - culturally and freshness. The only downside: no walk-ins so you do need to plan ahead.

Yelp
I know the location makes no "sense". Nevada City.... If sushi is your favorite food.... this is the holy land. I'm so blown away. Went for my second time yesterday, 2+ years after my first visit. If you can get a table; and you can spend whatever you want.... you will never forget your experience here. Get the shooters, the spoons, the quail eggs, and everything else your heart desires. SITR...... you have no peer. Domo arigato.

Yelp
My roommate and I were in town and wanted to try this restaurant. It was a great experience and the service was amazing. Our server August recommended the honeymoon roll and it was FIRE. The sake selection was also amazing, we had a great time. Would highly recommend!
