Best Hibachi Restaurants in Austin | Eater Austin

"Located near the Highland area (on the east side of I-35), this large hibachi hotspot offers plenty of flair to its diners, as well as beer and sake. The Japanese eatery’s menu showcases a variety of small plates, sushi, and teppanyaki grill options with USDA Choice aged beef." - Darcie Duttweiler

This hibachi restaurant is a great choice for a fun, family-friendly night out. The kids absolutely loved the show—lots of laughs and excitement at the grill—and it kept them entertained the whole time. The food was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly right in front of us. The portions were generous, and everything came out hot and tasty. Service was good, and the overall atmosphere was lively without being overwhelming. Definitely a solid four-star experience and a spot we’ll be coming back to. Perfect for family dinners or celebrations!

Google
We've been coming to Sushi Japon for around 6 years now as of this current review, we now even have a little one who has their first experience there today. Never had a bad experience, the staff all go above and beyond and if you have an issue they're more than happy to fix it. Everything on the menu is adjustable, just request. The vibe is great, it's cozy enough, and the sushi is just plain good. We actually moved away from Austin, but we still plan visits and incorporate coming here as often as possible. Lifetime enjoyer of sushi Japon.

Not my 1st time.. this time I sat alone at the hibachi table and the chef cooked me a chicken hibachi to perfection.. good service as well..

Just the way I love my sushi. Fresh and raw. Excellent customer service as well.

I made a reservation for my grandson's birthday. Everything went amazingly well. Food and service was great, especially the onion soup and jalapeno chicken wings. They even bought out a dessert with a candle and sang happy birthday! This was our first time having hibachi and we will definitely be back.

Called and asked if we needed a reservation for two for the hibachi and was told no. Showered up at the restaurant and was told a it would be a two hour wait. Food was ok but our waitress was not very communicative. A so-so restaurant.

Google
The Chef serving us was an absolute joy to listen to and watch. He used a rubber chicken as a rotisserie over the onion volcano he built 🤣 The servers were good at attending to our drinks and picking up the used dishes. Overall, a very nice experience. I highly recommend.

Google
Underwhelming and disappointing experience. I am not sure how this restaurant got such a high score. The staff was welcoming and friendly. It is all about the food. I actually said to my family that I'd just had the worst Hibachi in my life. The meat was tough and chewy. The garlic and vinegar sauce was the third rate, and I did not eat. Soup was salty. At least Benihana still offers the great Hibachi experience. Avoid this restaurant, my friends. They don't deserve your business.

Yelp
I'm updating my review from 2014 because my main complaint was the misleading wait time for multiple to go orders but that has greatly improved. This is not Uchi but they are not trying to be, so I'm giving them 5 stars based on who they are - a local, tasty and affordable Japanese sushi and hibachi restaurant. To be fair, I mainly order to go. In full disclosure, I usually order the same dishes....for years and years. I cannot speak to ambiance or the expanse of the menu, you may need to go read some other reviews for a broader perspective. My main message here is : eat the Kevin and the Tiffany rolls! The Kevin roll has tempura asparagus inside with seared tuna and very thinly sliced, grilled lemon on top. The Tiffany roll delights with escolar and fried garlic. Order the chicken katsu, perfect rice topped with a fried chicken cutlet, egg and a savory sauce. If you like local places, you have to support them or they cease to exist. Don't forget about Sushi Japon, it deserves some love and your business!

Yelp
I love doing hibachi, so when we were invited for a friends birthday, I was stoked! We had a reservation for 7pm, and the whole group was there but we weren't sat at a table till nearly 8, because "another party showed up after their reservation time." Once we finally got our table, the waiters immediately came by asking what we wanted food and drink wise. We were a group of 15, we hadn't even been sat down for 5 minutes. Seemed a little rushed. We all finally ordered, and we had hyped up the first timers about the "fun experience" the chefs give. To be honest, our chef did two little tricks and called it a day. There was nothing else past that. The rice toss and the volcano. Little disappointing because part of the experience is the fun stuff they do while cooking. Outside of that, the food was decent. I got the steak and lobster and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yelp
The planning was excellent! We were able to view and interact with regional and international sites and entertainment venues! The service, food and overall ambiance was outstanding!

Yelp
Dined in last night for a birthday dinner and placed a to-go order. Once I got home--after the restaurant had closed--I realized my order was incorrect. I called as soon as they opened to inform them, only to be told that unless the order was completely untouched and returned (which was not feasible as I live an hour away), they wouldn't do anything. I requested a refund for the difference between what I paid and what I received, but they refused. When I asked to speak with someone higher up, I was told that the only person above the GM, Augustine, was the owner. Augustine insisted that I could submit a message through the website, but that the owner would tell me the same thing. Bottom line--don't waste your time or hard-earned money on an establishment with subpar service and incorrect orders, especially one that refuses to correct their mistake without further inconvenience to the customer. As an Austinite, trust me--there are far better hibachi restaurants worth your business.

Yelp
Celebrated the night with some of their take out Crab, salmon, yellow fin, and trout. Hibachi chicken with extra yum yum sauce Everything was tasty and not too bad on the cost. 10 out of 10 will be goin back for more. Eat so much sushi, my stomach is sore.

Yelp
I love tuna towers. It was supposed to be appetizer but I put that shit down as my meal. Honestly, anything drenched in eel sauce is a hit and this was no exception. I did like the crispy rice chips it came with it added some crunchy texture

Yelp
The chef had a great sense of humor and a really engaging personality! I ordered the hibachi chicken and steak. The soup and salad that came with my meal were delicious. The salad dressing was phenomenal and the appetizers really hit the spot. The fried rice didn't come by default with the food and there was a slight up charge. I found the up charge a bit odd- not sure why the menu doesn't already include fried rice and automatically reflect a higher price. The hibachi style rice and meat were pretty good but not amazing. Also, we had a very long wait between the time we were seated and the time the chef came. Overall, I had a positive experience and could see myself going back.

Yelp
This is a nice little cozy Japanese eatery. The food was super tasty, but the portions a little smaller than I'm used to. My coworkers enjoyed the sushi and I enjoyed the hibachi chicken. I can't speak on the hibachi show itself, but they did ask if we wanted to sit there. Server was attentive and knew the menu. I would recommend this restaurant based on my single experience.

Yelp
Sushi Japon has been around for years! It is definitely a must try if you are in the mood for sushi, sake or even a cold margarita. They have a great Happy Hour Menu which is our favorite, you get to try a little of everything plus some good peach Sake. Have not eaten on the Hibachi side just yet but can't wait to enjoy it. You don't have to eat Hibachi they do have 2 sections. Its a nice intimate ambiance not too big inside just perfect. We always receive great service and food, a must try if you are new to Austin.

Yelp
I have been here a few times now, ordering something different each time. Everything has been delicious! The staff are both attentive and entertaining. It's good for both kids or a just a date night out.

Yelp
Food was good! I ordered a Philadelphia roll, a yellowtail roll, and an order of their cucumber salad to go. Fish was great and fresh. The cucumber salad was okay. It felt like they had just cut up some thick cucumber slices and put vinegar inside. I expected the cucumber slices to be thinner and to have a more pronounced flavor. However, overall, it was a good meal. Can't speak on the service since I did to go. However, the food was packaged well and came with chopsticks and soy sauce. 8/10!

Yelp
Great ambience and customer service ! Celebrated my son 15th birthday and they didn't disappoint.

Yelp
I'm not sure why this place has 3.5 stars, it is AMAZING! Every time I've been here the quality of food and service is always great. The chefs always make the experience interactive and fun and the servers are always attentive and kind. A great hidden gem off the highway! Highly recommend.

Yelp
We enjoyed a nice hibachi meal here. The place was busy and pretty crowded. Our hibachi cook was fantastic and gave us a great experience. The space was a little tight, but I was surprised at how many different tables they were able to squeeze into the area. The food was tasty and cooked well. The only issue we had was that we said we were there for a birthday, and I think our waiter got off work before we finished, so we had to flag down another employee to pay our bill, and we weren't able to get any Birthday recognition (Not sure if they even do anything here).

Yelp
Love coming here for lunch for the hibachi! Always a great show! My favorite is the scallop and fillet. Friendly service and reasonable prices for hibachi!

Yelp
My friend really wanted us to check out this sushi place he liked, mainly because of one specific roll. We arrived early, and even though the restaurant wasn't busy, we had to wait around 10-15 minutes to be seated. Once seated, it took an additional 5 minutes for someone to come and take our order. I decided to start with the seafood miso, which had a mix of seafood and vegetables, but unfortunately, the broth was disappointing. My friend also tried it and found it quite different from his usual miso. The spicy edamame and jalapeño peppers were satisfying, however. For the main course, I ordered two signature rolls: the "Sexy Lady" roll and the "Five Star" roll. To be honest, I wasn't very impressed with either of them, with the "Five Star" roll being the worst offender. Even with wasabi and soy, I couldn't find a way to enjoy it, as it didn't taste as fresh as I had hoped. I also ordered an egg roll and it was overly oily which indicates their fryer was too low in temperature. Overall, the dining experience left much to be desired, and I wouldn't consider coming back and paying for it again.

David L.

Yelp
The food was amazing and the chef was great. Love the surf and turf. Yummy. The food was cooked well and just like we like it.

Yelp
Make a reservation if you want the "Hibachi" experience. Was initially told over the phone that we (party of 2) didn't need one....so when we showed up...it was hella packed and parking was filled (we parked at Chillis) We sat at the bar, had some cocktails until it was time to HIBACHI! (you also have the option to get the same food at the bar or a table if you choose..but WHY?? About 45 mins later...we were brought to the hibachi area, our chef was fun and visually exciting. The food was very tasty and reasonably priced. Its a great spot for a date, girls nite out or solo. Will be back.

Yelp
Terrible! Sorry but it's gross. It smells bad when you walk in and that smell carries through to the sushi you're eating. It's like cleaning chemical or something. The sushi was not good. Lots of heavy sauces and didn't seem that fresh to me. It's cheap so if you want cheap - go! But there are way too many good sushi restaurants in town to waste your money here. I wanted to like it - I really did - but I didn't even finish one roll. The service was awesome. Nice guys! Btw - no Japanese chefs in the place :(

Yelp
This place is a definite hidden gem! I was worried at first because of the ratings from other yelpers. We had a late night and entered the restaurant at 9pm. This place was poppin! So much excitement and lots of people! We did have to wait liber for the food, but was expected because of how busy it was! Our server Juana is was so sweet! For the appetizer we had the beef egg roll, salad and soup. Everything was super fresh and loved the egg drop soup! All of the food was so good! We paid about $78 for everything you see in the photos. I loved the hibachi fried rice! It was so flavorful and the steak and shrimp was seasoned so well. The sushi was so yummy and loved everything about this meal. The only thing we didn't like was just how hot it was inside and our booth seat had been cut up. Other than that, we had a nice experience!
google avatar

Yelp
Hibachi is delicious. Service is par. If you are doing hibachi, you have to wait for the whole table to be filled before they start cooking. Meaning other large parties might get seated after you and their chef will be gin cooking before you. That's frustrating. This also isn't a place I'd feel safe eating sushi.
google avatar

T. L.

Yelp
We drove a long way to give this place a chance. Unfortunately, after 10+ minutes waiting at our table, we got up and left. The restaurant was loud and over warm and the staff seemed overwhelmed.
google avatar

Yuna K.

Yelp
I came here super skeptical due to the bad reviews but honestly was left with a rather decent experience. I sat at the hibachi table and our chef was super entertaining, and the food was solid. They do use quite a lot of butter but the fire show, and the eggs- you honestly go to hibachi for the experience. The sushi rolls here are also surprisingly cheap but very decent. You sit next to other people on a giant table and the ambiance is good for family gathering and a night out. (EDIT: afterwards eating here we got a stomachache/ food poisoning- so im not so sure about the food quality here anymore.. especially the sushi. Maybe just go here for the hibachi
google avatar

Yelp
Very good sushi. Nice bar. Spicy tuna roll was great. Hot edamame. Friendly and efficient staff.
google avatar

Heather B.

Yelp
Long time customer here. Have had numerous large group happy hours with terrific service pre-COVID. Since then it's been hit or miss. That said, we are still patronizing, hoping they will get back on track. Happy hour sushi specials are great!  The majority of the time the sushi is quite tasty, but there are times we have been very disappointed. The serving sizes are impressive. When dining with a small group, service has always been acceptable. The hibachi meals have always had the proteins cooked well, with tasty vegetables, and very good fried rice.
google avatar

Michaleen C.

Yelp
I had the house salad and a roll. Unfortunately, the food (roll) is exceptionally bland. I could totally get a better seasoned item at HEB. It was not restaurant quality. I used to like this spot when coming into town. Over the past several years it definitely is not the same. The hibachi seems live and very popular - but sushi's in the name and I would have rather gone to the Korean spot across the highway.
google avatar

Yelp
Best hibachi for price, portion and especially flavor. Location unassuming but the shrimp and steak hibachi is KILLER!!! Also love their shrimp fried rice!

Yelp
I travel all over the US on a weekly basis and sushi is usually my go to for Uber Eats when I'm on the road. Typically, by the time I get around to ordering dinner I'm exhausted from a long day of travel, so I'm not terribly particular. Tonight though, I tried Sushi Japon in Austin, and even I had to admit that it was far and away the worst sushi I've had. I ordered the Two Sisters Roll, which is supposed to come with salmon and tuna slices on the top. But, instead of using tuna and salmon they used thinly sliced lemon wedges coated in roe! After I removed the lemon roe all I could taste was citrus. One bite had something hard in it and it turned out it was a lemon seed. Needless to say, I didn't finish it. I also got a "spicy" tuna roll. It was tiny, not spicy, and the avocado was completely brown. And lastly, I ordered pork gyoza, which is usually pretty hard to screw up. But, these were rubbery and rather bland. The frozen ones you buy from the grocery store are much better, believe it or not. I did try to call instead of leaving a review, but they pretended they couldn't understand me and hung up on me. Oh well. ‍ Austin has some amazing restaurants, and I'm sure you can get quality sushi here, but you won't find it at Sushi Japon.
google avatar

Holly O.

Yelp
We visited Sushi Japon our second time for a birthday. They only take reservations for 8+ people so bring your friends. Good show, drinks and food.
google avatar

Jiovani R.

Yelp
I've been to lots of sushi and hibachi spots and this one really fell short. The service sucked and the food wasn't hot or warm when we received it. Our drinks were wrong and the place had no vents taking out the smoke from the hibachi table area, where they cooked in front of you. The one thing was scrumptious was the sushi but everything else was a fail.
google avatar

Ronald l.

Yelp
Food was pretty good cleanliness was ok. When we got here half the habachi tables were still with dirty plates on 4 of the seven tables they were cleaning some just after we sat down. The show was good and food was tasty but I was with out water after my salad. Other tables were getting water refills and sodas and beer. My waitress never came back till it was bill time. I think this place needs to address this problem as I have seen several reviews with same problem. I made sure to talk to manager and explain that this is an unacceptable aituation
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Delicious sushi and hibachi! I would highly recommend the hibachi rice and hibachi shrimp! Fun and entertaining chef!

Yelp
TLDR: A great place for some great sushi. Came here for dinner one night this weekend. I can't really put a finger on it, but something about the vibe of the place is just a wee bit off? not bad enough to really matter, but something just felt off. We started with spicy edamame, which was fantastic. after that, we moved into the sushi. We had 4 rolls, the Hot Night Roll, the Texas Roll, A California Roll, and a chicken tempura roll. All four where really good. the Hot Night Roll was probably the "worst" of the 4, as I fell like it was trying to hard, but I would definitely order the other 3 again. I would also definitely recommend this to a friend. Overall a 3.75/5.

Lisa P.

Yelp
I went for my birthday. There were 12 of us. We were there for over an hour before we even got our drinks. When they did come, they were not complete. My food never came. They brought it out after we were there for two & a half hours and I got it to go. It was a complete disaster. The service was awful the food who knows cause we didn't get it, and I would not go back at all. The first waiter we had was absolutely awful and super rude. The manager came out and switched him for someone else who was greatly improved, but it was already a ruined birthday dinner. This was super disappointing because I used to go to RA all the time in Houston and it was fabulous.

Travis P.

Yelp
I swore not to order from Sushi Japon approx ten years ago and then totally forgot because I did it again. While not as bad as it was the last time I had it, it's still really mediocre. Most of the rolls come out about as good as grocery store sushi, and def on the sloppy-side assembly-wise. This time I branched out and ordered the beef udon, and I'm sorry to report that it is terrible. It may be the single most bland dish I've ever gotten from a Japanese restaurant. Plain miso soup has more flavor than this. The noodle texture was actually excellent, but the broth had less taste than store-bought chicken broth, and the beef was overcooked and completely tasteless. Would not recommend it, and I'll try to remember not to order it for another ten years.

Yelp
Decided to come here for lunch after our original place fell through because it was closed. For this being a last minute decision, it ended up being a great choice! Both my friend and I ordered off the lunch menu. I had the chicken with mixed veggies which was basically a story fry in a spicy Szechuan type sauce that was really good. My friend had the shrimp tempura and chicken teriyaki bento box and loved it. Overall the price was great for the amount we got for the lunch special and the service was fast. I'd love to come back and try the hibachi and sushi menu next time.

Eric S.

Yelp
The wait staff was incredible. The hibachi chef was entertaining and the food was good. Augustatina was such a pleasant woman. She was so nice and very very helpful. As busy as it was she made sure we were taken care of with a smile on her face. Please please please tell her thank you. I couldn't see her when we were leaving. We were sitting at the first hibachi table by the window around 6:30 or 7:00pm.

Brandon K.

Yelp
Made a reservation for a group of 28 people, 4 days in advance, and called to confirm it. We got there on time, saw our reservation on their list and they had given away our tables. We were asked to wait 30 minutes for half of our group to be seated, so we all left and ate elsewhere. To management..... if you're worried about a no show then you should ask for a deposit, but don't offer a reservation without fulfilling it.

Dom L.

Yelp
Had my whole glass of ice water spilled on my food and lap by the cook and got no discount or refund. Food was ruined. Horrible experience. Had to clean it up myself. Cook didn't even apologize.
google avatar

Kia L.

Yelp
I came here with a group of friends on a Saturday night to celebrate a birthday. We all ordered from the Hibachi grill. I ordered the Salmon. They chef definitely over cooked my salmon.... Yikes, it was so dry! Then towards the end of the meal the chef started chucking shrimp at people very awkward and hilarious experience. The parking lot gets extremely packed so arrive before your reservation.
google avatar

Jamie H.

Yelp
Honestly my order wasn't correct when I ordered door dash and the sushi was sub par. I'm super disappointed with the quality and my order not being correct.

Rachel K.

Yelp
Worst dining experience I've ever had, at $50+ per guest!  Floors so sticky they broke my sandals, a 2 hr long "no wait," an unsafe/broken chair, soup served in a bowl with multiple chips, and a manager with ZERO customer service skills... If the owner of this establishment sees this, I would like you to contact me immediately about a full refund. Called today around lunch to check if we would need a reservation for my Mom's birthday hibachi dinner, they said no. So I called again at 6:42 asking to put my name on the hibachi wait list for three.  I was told there was no wait. Upon arrival my father was told we could be sat at 7:25, which didnt match what we were told, but 30min isnt so bad, usually restaurants overquote wait times, we werent upset at first. But we were not brought to the table til 7:45, a full HOUR later... The floor was so sticky on the way to the table that my sandals were sticking to the floor, and it BROKE my left sandal when walking to the table... My chair at the table was badly broken. We were not brought water until 8pm, after 15 min of waiting at the table... All 3 soup bowls they brought us had more than one chip/break on the rims. I spoke with the manager for the 1st time at 8:30 about the wait, the sticky floor that broke my left sandal, I showed him photos of our broken soup bowls/my call log, showing him its 2 hrs after I was told "no wait," and there was *still* no chef at our table... The manager said HE was the one who told me there was no wait. He did not apologize once. He interrupted me with excuses, instead of solutions. I said comps were expected because I am not willing to pay $50+ a head for this. He told me no. He was unwilling to do ANYTHING to make the situation right. He said "you're not the only ones who had to wait." My mother has health concerns, I did EVERYTHING I could to make sure she was well taken care of on the timing of her birthday dinner, because she is not supposed to go more than 2hrs without eating. I told the manager this, and I was not even given so much as an apology. I showed the manager the broken chair I had been sitting in at my table. He just swapped them out, no apology... I told him if he was unwilling to offer me some kind of compromise or comp, that my photos and reviews are going online (I PICKED THIS PLACE BECAUSE IT HAD THE BEST REVIEWS AFTER ALL). The manager told me "that wouldn't be so bad." The audacity!! Chef showed up to table at 8:45, 2 full hours after the manager told me there was no wait, around the same time he replaced my broken chair. When I told another employee the manager had quoted us no wait for 3 on hibachi, they replied "I don't know why you were told that, we've been on a wait all night." So this manager has been lying to me since the start. No accountability. Our $150 check came with NO discounts. I handed the manager our bill and credit card and said "I see there is no edit to this bill, I want to make sure that was your intention?" He rolled his eyes and took the payment. When he returned it, tabbed out with a whopping $18 discount, he STILL did not apologize, but told me that the chair is broken because "300lb people sit on them," and that it was "unfair to expect perfection. We are only human." I told him I understand that. But I've never had such a bad dining experience, ever. I've been in service for 20 years. I've never worked somewhere that treated patrons this way. I have no idea how they fumbled our party so hard. I don't expect perfection. I do expect honesty in a wait time, especially when the manager is the one giving me said wait time. I do expect my chair to be safe, and not broken. I do expect my soup to be served in a bowl that is sanitary, and not chipped in multiple places. I expect the floors to be clean enough that they don't break my shoe.... I expect when I bring a pile of concerns like this to the manager that I be treated with respect, and that they at the very least take accountability with an apology and some form of professional action. Our server gave us a dessert because he felt awful that we'd been through so much, on Mom's Birthday no less when my parents drove 3+ hrs down from DFW to celebrate here together... I chose this place bc it had the highest ratings on Google and I can't for the life of me figure out why... Our family gets hibachi for all birthdays. The food was mediocre. We weren't offered the yumyum/brown sauce until the end of the meal when we were already done with our steak.... I've been in the service industry for 20 years, I've never seen a train wreck like this go without taking the bare minimum of accountability in the form of an apology... I'm livid they charged us anything at all. This is so unacceptable.

Yelp
At Sushi Japon, I wouldn't rank the food as the best, but it is still pretty decent. My personal experience with the service you receive as a patron at this restaurant has fluctuated greatly among the handful of times I've eaten here, but you'll definitely get seated (eventually). I usually try to come around their Happy Hour times because their prices are a bit high, and during then I typically order Salmon Nigiri, a Philadelphia Roll, and a Crunchy Roll. The ambiance of the place can be a little overwhelming at times because they often play music a little too loud. However, this is for sure a great place to bring your family, especially if you reserve for the hibachi grills located further inside the restaurant.

Yelp
Awesome show, efficient service, good food, no wait. I would return with my kid. Not really a date night kind of place.

Yelp
Mediocre at best. My cook was too busy checking out my 16 year old daughter and looking at her boobs. Isnt it courtesy to refrain from staring at women like that, much less minors? This made everyone very uncomfortable, including the family we were sitting with. Needless to say, we just couldn't wait to leave. Food was fine but the show was lacking. No enthusiasm. Service was mediocre as well.

Yelp
Sushi Japon was a really fun and entertaining experience! The food was pretty good and basically what you would normally expect out of a hibachi place. The sushi tasted pretty fresh, and I enjoyed the fried rice and grilled meat. The lychee martini was a bit overly sweet and tasted quite artificial. The place was also quite understaffed, with only one main chef catering to the several parties at the restaurant. Thus, the wait was pretty long. However, he definitely put on a show and amused our crowd. Overall, while the service time could definitely be improved, I still felt like the experience was worth the wait!

Yelp
Terrible....we sat at our table and witnessed 3 other couples walk out due to no customer service. We were waited on with drinks (not even a shot of alcohol in our drinks) at least hook us up if you are understaffed! There were plenty of busboys just no cooks. I hate leaving bad reviews I really do but jeeZ. I hope the food is good but wouldn't know.
