Where to Stay and Eat in Vancouver

"A nondescript facade and a location tucked amidst forgettable neighbors mean you could miss Sushi Jin, but don't. This place is tiny but mighty, with room for just six at the bar, plus two additional tables. It is something of a local secret, but those in the know come here for traditional Japanese served with a distinctive voice." - Kevin Chau

Sushi Jin

"A nondescript facade and a location tucked amidst forgettable neighbors mean you could miss Sushi Jin, but don't. This place is tiny but mighty, with room for just six at the bar, plus two additional tables. It is something of a local secret, but those in the know come here for traditional Japanese served with a distinctive voice. Begin with otsumami like live lobster sashimi topped with osetra caviar in an olive oil and thick, savory soy sauce finished with fresh satsuma rind.Ankimo in a ponzu bath is brilliantly simple yet luxurious, followed up by miso soup in lobster broth that is far from humdrum. Nigiri, from hirame to anago, balance sweet and salty, but the otoro with Hokkaido uni and white baby prawn is as pretty as it is pleasing." - Michelin Inspector

We had an amazing experience at Sushi Jin! It was my boyfriend’s birthday today, and we made a reservation in advance for their omakase. Both the chef and his wife were incredibly warm and friendly, which made the evening even more special. The ingredients were super fresh, and everything tasted delicious. We especially loved their wasabi and homemade ginger — such a nice touch! It was also a pleasure to watch the chef carefully prepare each dish — truly a beautiful and enjoyable experience. Since they only serve six guests at a time, it’s really quiet and private, which made it feel even more special. Highly recommend!

The sushi was super clean and fresh, and it literally melted in my mouth! There was no fishy aftertaste at all, which I really appreciated. You can tell they really care about giving the best experience to people who make a reservation — that’s what makes omakase so special. They even gave us tips on how to enjoy the sushi better, which made it even more fun. Thank you! 🥰

The service and quality were both excellent! I went there to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. It was a wonderful memory and experience. The chef was very professional and it was fun to chat with him!

My first experience at this restaurant. The food quality is very good, atmosphere is normal nothing fancy but the service(his wife) was bad. She’s very cheap when asking for refill on tea and gingers and she’s give me that dirty looks and they charge you automatically 18% tips. At the end it’s NOT worth $370 per person.

Chef Jin is an artist. My husband and I went for his birthday and we had such an enjoyable experience. The highest grade of seafood with expertly put together flavours. They only do four seatings a night and it’s omakase and if you’re lucky enough to go, go!

If you've never had omakase before, you will undoubtedly love this place in every way. If you have had it before, especially in Ginza or any of the Michelin Star level places in Canada, you'll love the food quality. FOOD: 10/10. Fresh. Delicious. Will ruin all "mainstream" quality sushi places you think you already love. SERVICE: Chef is not arrogant. He's kind, talkative and is extremely passionate. His experience is obvious in the small details of his preparation of each plate. At the end of service he was excited to geek out on any Sushi questions you might have. ATMOSPHERE: This was lacking for me because I had other omakase experiences to compare it to. I thought the room was too brightly lit. You can also see all of the services items in open cupboards. This is extreme nitpicking but for the price I want the optics experience to match up with the food. Would I return, even if nothing changed? Yes. Food was great and the service is impossible to fault.

My first Michelin omakase experience began at Sushi Jin. The hostess kindly assisted us in savoring the flavors properly, and the chef thoroughly explained the origins and details of the ingredients, allowing us to comfortably enjoy the food. The seasoning of the dishes was neither lacking nor excessive, making it perfect for tasting the flavors of the fish. Each menu item had a special taste, but the top-grade uni had an unprecedented texture and sweetness, and the bluefin tuna melted in the mouth like butter. I was grateful for the chance to taste even the homemade ginger pickles, which were made with great care. It’s a pity that I can only give it five stars. From Waterloo

Sushi Jin is the goat. Chef always makes a great meal when we’re there for omakase. Each course is carefully made and presented. Chef is actually really funny and loves to talk. His wife serves and explains many things. Overall a great experience, slightly more high end than your normal sushi but definitely worth the experience.

Yelp
Why 5 stars? Because this was definitely an experience we won't forget. --- --- --- Recently, my wife and enjoyed an amazing Omakase in Houston for her birthday. When we decided to book a vacation to Vancouver, we knew we had to enjoy Omakase in one of the better cities for sushi in North America. So we did a bit of research and booked Sushi Jin. Just a warning to anyone else who might make this same mistake: there is a $169 fee to book a reservation. This is NOT the entire cost of the experience - it's only a deposit. It actually costs $300 per person. The grand total after taxes and gratuity came out to $738, and that's with us not drinking any alcohol. This was indeed the most expensive meal I have ever eaten. Was it the best meal of my life? No. Was it even better than the Omakase we just recently had in Houston? No. But, I definitely don't regret it. In addition to the actual eating part is the experience itself. Watching the chef work was like attending a show. He was so incredibly meticulous with every inch that he moved and every action he took. It's clear that he's done this thousands of times in his life. It made me think of how he does other things in his life. Does he change his own oil with this grace? With how much he clearly respects the craft of food preparation, does he ever just go to Burger King and pig out on a bunch of terrible, greasy food? When he applies toothpaste to his brush, does he methodically spin it around to add to the allure of the presentation? These are the questions I have a duty to ask. But onto the important stuff. I initially planned on adding a rating to every bite, but it seemed like it would be boring to just say "5-stars" like 15 times, so I figured this would be a better system: if it says nothing, it's 5-stars. The rare 4-stars are noted. * means it was extra amazing, with an extra 6th star. ** means the ever-rare 7-stars, which is defined as being able to cure any disease upon consumption. 1) Lobster & Caviar * 2) Hotaru Ika 3) Gindara Saikyo-yaki ** 4) Miso Soup with Lobster Broth 5) Hirame: 4-stars 6) Shima Aji: 4-stars 7) Kanpachi" 4-stars (There was the tiniest dot of green onion on top of this, but you could taste it very strongly on this bite. It wasn't bad, but just crazy how much of a punch it packed for its size.) 8) Bluefin Tuna Chutoro 9) Bafun Uni 10) Botan Ebi * BONUS) Salmon ** (He ended up just giving this to me because everyone else said they were getting full. I have no idea what it would be called on a menu, but I called it utterly amazing Salmon.) 11) Ikura 12) King Salmon Aburi ** 13) Bluefin Tuna Kamatoro ** 14) Luxury Gunkan* 15) Anago* 16) Negitoro Temaki ** 17) Tamago * 18) Dessert (Monaka Matcha Gelato) * So there you have it. It was a costly dinner, but one I'll never forget. The USD to CAN exchange rate also played in my favor here, which lessened the blow of that price tag. One note I will add: I'm a strong believer in people being able to do whatever they want, as long as they are not hurting anyone or compelling me to do something. However, the chef wearing a mask did hinder part of the experience for me. I loved interacting with him, but the mask made it harder to understand him and see his expressions. Just my .02.

Yelp
Great sushi is simple -- it just has to be perfect. Sushi Jin was perfect. A few standouts. Lobster sashimi with ossetra caviar and adorable little yuzu blossoms at the beginning; one of the best pieces of uni nigiri I've ever put in my mouth; plump and delicately flavoured ikura; a shockingly tender and rich piece of marinated tako; and the appropriately named "luxury gunkan," where prima-donna ingredients like toro, uni, and ikura harmonized beautifully rather than shouting over one another. Everything was precisely seasoned, including some thoughtful and unusual choices like adding yuzu zest instead of the traditional glaze to the anago near the end. Chef Jin does not exactly season with restraint -- muscular dabs of wasabi accompany pieces like the showstopper negitoro temaki -- which makes the delicate flavour balance he arrives at even more impressive. The vibe was peaceful and masterful, which is one of the things that differentiates Sushi Jin from Masayoshi or Okeya Kyujiro, its top competitors in Vancouver's "you paid how much for 15 bites of fish?!" category. There were no showy supplements or ceremonies. The service was meticulous; my tea was never empty and errant flecks of shoyu disappeared from my place setting within minutes. Yes, it's expensive. It's also uncommon to find sushi this good anywhere, let alone this side of the Pacific. Pick an excuse and go.

Yelp
Chef Jin serves the best omakase experience I've had anywhere. I came here in 2022 and made sure to secure a seat at the table for my 2023 trip back to Vancouver. They had a notebook and checked what I had in 2022 to compare it to the experience for 2023. Premium omakase and meals are by reservation only. No walk-ins. They also ask for your card information when you make reservations. The quality of the food is top-notch. Chef Jin explains how he prepares everything. The wasabi and pickled ginger are all made in-house. My favorite bite is the lobster with caviar and shisho flowers. All of the sauces and toppings that Chef Jin creates are very delicious and complement the fresh pieces of fish. Luxury Gunkan is a very close second. It has otoro, hokkaido uni, shiro, ebi, and ikura. The way Chef Jin prepared the ikura here has turned me away from all the store-bought/other sushi restaurant ikura out there because it is so much fresher here and not salty. Chef Jin's wife is super kind too. She explained the shape of the sushi piece to me and why it got it's name. I learned that the 'Gunkan' sushi is shaped like a warship. It is a ball of rice with seaweed around the outside. The ingredients are put on top rather than on the inside. Some other pieces we had were octopus leg, grilled black cod (SOOO GOOD!), flounder, bluefin chutoro, live spotted prawn, kanpachi (yellowtail), shima aji (striped jack), king salmon aburi, anago (salt water eel), and nizadai (surgeonfish). The dessert I had was monaka matcha gelato. There's a red bean paste on matcha gelato between a shell-shaped wafer. These 2 meals I've had are some of the best food I've ever had. I hope to have the honor of coming back a third time.

Yelp
Chef Jin was great at explaining the different pieces and how each item was prepared. I really enjoyed learning about the prep work that goes into the marination of the fish/seafood. Small group with 7-9 seats. Our whole party booked up the rsvp so it was nice to have the place to ourselves. Quality of fish was fresh and flavor was good! On the Michelin guide.

Yelp
My second time dining at sushi Jin and it's my favourite omakase experience all the time (even over Toronto omakase)! I came with a group of 5 and we had the entire counter omakase area (and restaurant) to ourselves! It was an intimate experience with the chef and friends. You have to pre-book in advance and pay upfront the entire price. It's quite expensive, at $300 a head but completely worth it for an experience and special occasion. Menu changes all the time based on what fresh ingredients the chef gets. We had some special uni that night that was absolutely amazing and so fresh! Think, mouthfuls of uni! YUM! The chef does a great job at explaining all the food items and ingredients used and is always super interactive with the guests. Pair your meal with some sake and it's the perfect touch! There's only two seating times at 6:00PM and 8:00PM. I was seated at 6:00PM and by the time we finished our meal, the 8:00PM crowd had already arrived getting ready for their time slot. It's a unique experience in itself and completely worth the price tag! Give it a visit!

Yelp
My wife and I came in from Seattle to spend some time exploring Vancouver. We are huge sushi fans, and even bigger Omakase fans, when we give ourselves permission to indulge. We came in on a weekday at the 8pm seating and had the whole counter to ourselves. To sum it up: the food, the service, and the experience were all top notch. Oftentimes, I judge a place based on the quality of the fish. At Sushi Jin, not only do they have great quality fish, but it's the finer touches that made the difference. Marinating ikura in 3 different ways across 4 days, check. Taking the time to dehydrate uni just so it's used to zest a spot prawn, you got it. Curating and creating soy sauces in house so it matches the flavor of the fish, they do that! Needless to say, we enjoyed our experience and learned so much about sushi in the process. We left our experience even more impressed than when we arrived. There was an evident passion and craftsmanship; it was a special experience!

Yelp
My husband and I came for the okamase set. The food was delicious and the service was great. We enjoyed each of the set and added an additional uni sampler to our dinner. We would want to come back again for the wonderful dinning experience.

Stephanie H.

Yelp
The fish was superb but the I'm not sure it was worth $300 a person. Every piece was seasoned with soy sauce and wasabi, very little creativity involved and almost every dish was just a single piece of nigiri. For the dessert, he took out a huge tub of ice cream that had definitely been around awhile and sandwiched it between two store-bought wafers. The ambiance is also very simple with 6 of us at the bar with a plastic screen between groups.

Yelp
Sushi Jin's omakase was the first omakase I've tried. We came upon it one night when wanting to have Japanese food and it was in the area, and found out that they only serve omakase. I didn't know what omakase was but since that time, I've became an omakase addict, and sad to say that no other place's omakase has surpassed Sushi Jin's so far. Their soy sauce content with the fresh nigiri is the just perfect amount of soy sauce. And their nigiri and appetizers in the omakase is very meticulously crafted - each bite makes you go omg. Though it is pricey, I've went back a few times already. And when my wallet is not thin, I'd love to go back again.

Yelp
B surprised me for my birthday and took me out to Sushi Jin, one of the higher end Korean run, sushi spots downtown. They specialize in edomae sushi. They're next door to Waverly Barber & Hair Salon and Babylon Cafe. We dropped in on a Thursday evening (7:30 reservation) but had to wait 15 minutes for our table. The inside is small with 6 tables (only room for 16 people). Service is friendly and our green tea pot was refilled several times. Oddly, they gave us bottles of Costco water. They no longer offer a regular menu (like when we visited). Now, only a premium omakase ($250.00/person) is offered with pre-payment required upfront. - Miso soup - slightly better than your standard miso soup. - Sushi moriawase ($36.95 for 8) - suzuki, kanpachi, shima aji, king salmon (from NZ), saba, hokkigai and unagi. Favourite pieces were the king salmon and shima aji. The hokkigai gunkan, which was shredded, was unique. - Assorted aburi zushi ($29.00 for 5) - unagi, otoro, beef tenderloin, king salmon and hotate. All the pieces were good quality. The unagi seemed out of place as it wasn't seared and tasted the same as the piece we were given in our assorted nigiri platter. - Tekka don ($49.95) - the bluefin tuna was buttery, melt in your mouth goodness. Excellent touch with the freshly grated wasabi and green onions. This brought us back to the otoro don's we ate in Japan except at a much heftier price point. - Tamago ($2.50) - always save the tamago for last. Mixed feelings about it. Didn't love or hate it but wouldn't order a second piece. - Brownie - small complimentary dessert to end our meal. Brownie had an interesting texture with a dollop of sour cream on top. If you've got the money, then you'll enjoy Sushi Jin. Good quality but pricey sushi. 3.5 stars.

Yelp
This was as close to the omakase experience I had in Tokyo. I would say this was my favorite omakase experience in Vancouver. At our seating, we had a couple that didn't want to eat too much bluefin tuna, so he gave us extra. The freshness of the seafood will leave a memory burn for a long time!

Yelp
The restaurant is small making for an intimate experience with the chef. There were 6 customers, the maximum, when my friend took me here for an omakase. The meal was incredible. As was our interactions with Chef Jin. Our server was quick to provide drinks, remove used dishes and keep our sides of homemade ginger and wasabi flowing. Chef Jin prepares art worthy courses starting with the first dish of lobster tail sashimi right through to the unique and refreshingly light dessert of green tea ice cream with red bean paste inside an edible shell shaped wafer. As outstanding as those two dishes were, so was the host of fish treats in between. A black cod course in heat flashed seaweed, that I forgot to photograph, was outstanding as was the octopus I also forgot to get a photo of. The tuna sushi and tuna hand roll with onions melted in your mouth. King salmon done two ways was the best tasting I've had. A scallop with uni and caviar was luxurious, as was the luxury course of that wonderful tuna paired with uni, baby shrimp and salmon roe. Every piece of fish was top quality, fresh, prepared with great care and plated nicely. It seemed the food kept arriving but in the end it was the perfect amount to feel comfortably full. I had a wonderful evening and an amazing meal. I highly recommend Sushi Jin if you seek the best and freshest sushi prepared with flare and food artistry. I hope to be back.

Yelp
The quality of fish and attention to detail here is impeccable! Had a very enjoyable Omakase experience - not only was each course absolutely mouthwatering, but watching the chef create each of these was an art form in itself. Though more of an occasion restaurant if you're going for the Omakase ($$$), the experience is a unique experience you won't be able to find just anywhere in Vancouver!

Charles L.

Yelp
We were the only ones at our 6pm reservation, so enjoyed having the restaurant all to ourselves. It was an amazing experience with Chef Jin who created fabulous sushi dishes for us. The experience seems expensive, but in my mind, a private dining experience with an amazing chef is well worth it! We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Super fun omakase! Chef Jin was pretty entertaining, he also let us sample some of the fish and gave my hungry friends extra hand rolls! He always gave us a little tidbit/fun fact about each fish he served. The otoro and chutoro were super melt in your mouth and NOT stringy or chewy at all, he cut them super well. He also made a super cute gunkan that was very delicately put together. I highly recommend this place and will def be coming back for sure!

Yelp
Good omakase experience, not my top choice wouldn't really recommend but should come and give it a try.

Yelp
We ordered takeout for a belated birthday splurge/COVID date night! We ordered: Blue fin tuna trio (double) Omakase sashimi moriawase w/extra hamachi shime saba Luxury Gunkan Negitoro sumi ika somen uni ae It was incredible! I actually think it was as good as our first experience, but I think the rice was better this time. We thoroughly enjoyed our decadent over-the-top meal. Strongly recommend if you are looking for a treat!

Yelp
I forget which omakase set we got here, but we got the set with uni and toro. We had reservations at 730. We got there and the restaurant was full. There was a couple who finished their food for quite some time and paid, but didn't leave. The waitress kindly asked them to leave since they've been done eating, probably so we can get seated. They do not have bar seating, so someone comes out with a mini plate of nigiri every single time. The fish was very fresh. And I would definitely come back. My top favorites were the ikura with uni, the toros and the neck. Also we ordered a small bottle of sake. Cannot go wrong with sake and sushi. I do not regret coming here (it was quite expensive), and would definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Sangeetha M.

Yelp
Since reopening for dine in they only have their premium omakase menu. Because of Covid there are only 3 tables available. The experience overall was great, service was really good. Our server was warm, and explained every item. I had a short chat with the chef too who was very friendly. Each item arrived promptly and I did not feel like I needed more at the end of the meal. I didn't feel extremely full either. It was the perfect amount of food. I didn't dislike anything on the menu, everything was good. The king salmon marine was my favourite. Hokkaido & Mexican uni was very tasty, I am picky with uni. You can tell everything is fresh. The dessert was some cut fruit, and I was hoping for something more!

Yelp
An authentic japense restaurant with the freshest ingredients and specialty fish. Words cannot express the quality of the fish at this establishment. I highly recommend all the items tried. [Items Tried] Nigiri - Shima Aji This was recommended to us by the server - horse-mackerel nigiri. Tasted very fresh, chewy, refreshing and a nice contrast to all the red fish ordered. Blue Fin Tuna Nijiri - $18.95 This set comes with three pieces, akima, chutoro, otoro. This was eaten in order (from least fatty to most fatty). Each piece of fish tasted different, my personal favourite was otoro which melts in your mouth. Tuna with Negi Temaki - $5 The hand roll had bluefin tuna and was very melty and fresh. Sashimi Omakase Moriawase - $99.95 A variety of sashimi including otoro, hamachi, salmon, tuna, shrimp, ikura, uni, etc. The chef gave us extra because of the extra preparation time he required to cut the fish. The selection of fish was very complementary and I highly recommend ordering this platter. [Value for Money] You pay for what you get. Our bill came to $180 for 2 people and every item we ordered was phenomenal.

Yelp
Shout out to Vancouver BC Yelpers! Ventured to Sushi Jin here based on your Hot and New reviews (2/19/19). This was our first dinner visit from Shoreline, WA (north of Seattle). No reservations, walked straight in, underdressed in a bulky coat, sports hoodie, jeans, ratty cross-trainers...but treated with the utmost gracious and professional service. From the tea service, miso soup, salmon and tuna plates, the filet mignon pair, the kanpachi, and the hotate nigiri, plus the final dessert bite....absolutely worth every Canadian dollar spent! Seriously, on par with some of the pricier sushi establishments I've experienced in Seattle. Having worked at a seafood restaurant in the past and currently a QC microbiologist, I am very picky about my sushi selections. I'm sure the overhead security camera by our table captured my Cheshire cat grin by the end of our meal. A terrific find based on the local VanBC Yelpers! Definitely showcasing superb menu items while making it approachable, without attitude or pretense. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Good meal! Wasn't able to experience the Omakase Course D...but overall, good experience! We made reservations for 7pm on Sunday night. The restaurant itself is small, so reservations is recommended. Unfortunately, didn't eat until later since I had to re-park the car, but glad they were still able to accommodate us. We were planning to order the Omakase Course D, but the staff mentioned later that they for sure didn't have the Hokkaido Uni, and some other items, and advised us to just order Course A/B or a la carte. We ended up doing a la carte. We orderd a 7 pc Omakase Sashimi Moriawase, Tuna Trio, and other nigiri. Fish were all fresh and uni was quite delicious. They did provide complimentary miso soup to start the meal. Their ginger and wasabi are made in house and were very good. My favorite in the end was the chutoro. In between the akami and otoro, had just enough lean and fatty to make it a perfect bite. Otoro caviar was a luxury as I've never had that combination before. Least favorite was the ikura (salmon roe). The presentation was interesting, as it came in a bowl. But all the ikura I've had before were salty (which was what I was expecting), but Sushi Jin's ikura is sweet. Just FYI. Definitely worth a try! Hopefully you can order the Course D for me :)

Yelp
My friend and I went in to check out this fairly new place in Vancouver downtown. We were excited about the reviews, edomae sushi sign and amazing pictures on Yelp. We were the first customer of the day, yay! Very clean and quiet, seemed very organized. The Japanese waitress was very nice to answer our questions. Served green tea right away in a tiny double wall cup. I'd prefer a big cup since I drink tea a lot. We ordered about 8 pieces of nigiri each wanting to taste every fish we like. The rice they use is flavored nicely, not too vinegary not too salty. Standard sushi rice is supposed to be cold, but it was warm at this place. The fish on nigiri were fresh and all flavored already so no soy sauce dip needed. The chef explained he uses flavorings like konbu salt, shrimp farmented soy sauce, yuzu peels, etc.. very creative and that really enhanced the flavor of sushi. Well done. With surprise, miso soup had no dashi flavor, so the soup needs improvement. The prices with fresh fish and chefs creating techniques are reasonable especially in CAD.

Yelp
This is by far, the best sushi restaurant in town!! Trust me, I tried many many places around, this place has absolutely goood quality of fish! Interestingly, I was threw off with the prices, so didn't really wana try. Until Christmas Eve, we decided to splurge for a nice dinner. Ordered the $135/person Omakase (Chef's Choice) of 2 entree, 14 sushi (including a few specialty ones that are not included in the $85 & $105 Omakase), miso soup & dessert. I was sooo wow with the Hokkaido Scallop Uni sandwich at the beginning as one of the entree. The Hokkaido Scallop was sooo sweet that I thought the chef dab it with sugar! The Uni they gave us was Bafin Uni which is from Japan, much smaller piece than local ones but waaay sweeter! My husband couldn't see my eyes once I ate that, cos I was constantly giggling. The first two pieces of sushi were on the leaner side, I see them as pallet cleanser, get my senses and appetite ready for something really gooood. Once we move onto Kapachi, the sweetness of the fishes are starting to expend. The Blue Fin tuna was a complete Wow to us, very fresh and fatty, and it's not even the belly yet! Then the O-Toro, fattiest tuna belly, sooo melty!! Then Blue Fin Tuna belly, OMG!! Completely melts in my mouth. Not exactly like butter like wagyu beef, the Blue Fin Tuna Belly slowly melts so I can taste the freshness of the raw fish, it's a very interesting delicious combination to experience. As we though the Blue Fin Tuna Belly was the highlight, but the Chef prepared us their specialty sushi that has, sweet prawn, O-Toro, Bafin Uni, ikura all in one! That was such a beautiful harmony compliment each other so very well, it maximize all the fresh sweetness into one, ok, two, bites! ( I learnt not to stuff food in my face when I was young!) This one was absolutely heavenly ~~ Then we thought that was the peak, and a simple Aburi King Salmon Belly arrived, even though it has a very aromatic seared smell, I thought it's just another seared/torched salmon belly, but no no no, it was the most delicious one I ever had!! Ok, I might sound over exaggerated but I'm just being very honest! This is waaay better you know the one next to waterfront The peak of the dinner was a little dish with overflowing ikura and Bafin Uni! Every bite I had just reminded me of Japan, fresh fresh seafood happiness, more happy face and more giggling. The Ikura tasted amazingly sweet that usually is not the case at most sushi place here (tasted super salty) and the Bafin Uni, wow, sooo sweet. Ikura and Uni are already best friends, and putting the best of the best together, of course they taste soo delicious~~ This place is usually very busy on weekends, so reservations are highly recommended. We made reservation about 2 weeks before Christmas Eve to have a prime time spot. Parking can be a pain cos it's all meter parking on one way street, so give time before going to dinner. At the end of the year, I finally found a Japanese sushi place that I can go for goooood quality ones that I feel confident in. Definitely will come back!

Yelp
Wow, an unexpected sushi restaurant hidden away downtown. Thanks to fellow Yelpers, I found this while searching for a restaurant to go to after The Orpheum. We actually walked by it the first time since it was so unassuming. Inside, the space is very small. We were greeted warmly and had our umbrellas taken for us. I have to admit, I was taken aback by the prices in the menu. I noticed we weren't the only ones as one party of 2 came in, sat and looked at the menu, and then promptly walked out! For those accustomed to economical sushi in Vancouver, this is not one of those places. This is a "Jiro dreams of Sushi" type of experience. Very high quality, super fresh, even down to the housemade ginger and fresh wasabi (and I'm not even a fan of wasabi but that stuff was amazing). I decided to get the chirashi since it would give me a good variety. Definitely the best chirashi in Vancouver, hands down. The Uni melted in my mouth and everything was so fresh. If you can get over the price, my only qualm about the experience was how uncomfortable it was to sit there. The space is small, the tables and chairs nothing special. When you're paying this much money, I'd like to feel like I'm in a 5 star atmosphere too. That's why this isn't a full 5 star review.

Yelp
Definitely one of the best sushi restaurants I've been to by far! From quality to presentation, I can't find anything I could complain about. Yes, you will break your wallet, so this wouldn't be a cheap in and out sushi joint if that's what you're looking for. It is a very small restaurant so I highly encourage to call in for a reservation before dining.

Yelp
One of these things is not like the other. One of these things do not belong. Located on an unassuming block on the south side of Nelson street between Howe and Granville sits arguably one of Vancouver's best traditional sushi restaurants on the same block as a two dollar pizza place, a dive bar and fast food poutine. From the outside Sushi Jin looks like just another standard sushi restaurant but on the the inside be prepared to experience some of the top quality slices of fish in Vancouver and bring your wallet as this place is priced accordingly. The cheapest Omakase set is a 14 piece set for 85 dollar per person. My wife and I opted for the second most expensive omakase set at 135 dollar per person omakase set c and had a mind blowing experience. The omakase set c contains nigiri from the premium selections of the menu as well as two entrees, miso soup and dessert. In my view this is a special occasion type of place where high end sushi lovers will really appreciate the fish and the skill of the sushi chef. Those that like fusion saucy type rolls, and don't get me wrong there is a time and a place for good cheap mid grade sushi, should definitely look elsewhere.

Yelp
Remarkable experience! Each item in the omakase menu was masterfully presented to us by the chef, no details spared. After trying a fair amount of sushi bar in Vancouver, this is by far the best in terms of quality, consistency and authenticity. Service is good; the chef made it comfortable and did not impose with strict rules. Suitable for special occasions, or just a cozy night out.

Yelp
We went here for our anniversary and oh wow, it's so delicious! We ordered uni tray and Omakase A, which has 14 nigiri sushi including 2 temaki, tamago and dessert. I was really impressed that they were able to make me like me the brown rice that came with the nigiri since I usually hated brown rice sushi with a passion. Even though I still think it would be better with white rice, each piece of the fish in the nigiri was so fresh and delicious, my mouth watered again just thinking about that. On the con side, I found the tamago a little bit too rich. The texture and taste was more chawanmushi than the tamago roll I'm used to but the homemade chocolate cake with the sour cream? Such a perfect finish for the whole meal. Both my boyfriend and I were worried we would still be hungry but I was actually stuffed by the end of the meal. For an omakase, definitely worth the price The service was very attentive and friendly. The environment was cosy. Overall, Sushi Jin becomes our favourite high-end sushi restaurant.

Yelp
Sushi Jin is a cozy spot for high quality (and high price) sushi. I've been thinking about the tuna ever since the first bites of the Tekka Don. I'll be going back! [Dishes] Tekka Don (Bluefin Tuna) - You could really taste the quality in each bite. Probably one of the best pieces of tuna I've had in Vancouver. The soy sauce was laid on the rice a little thick for my taste, but still so good. Kaisen Chirashi Sushi (Assorted Sashimi) - almost all of these were delicious, and the ones that weren't were pretty damn close. In particular, the uni was ultra creamy. [Service/Atmosphere] Service was friendly, and the atmosphere was busy, but quiet enough to enjoy a conversation. [Value] $50 per bowl is out of my range for a normal meal, but for the quality I would come back for a more special occasion. [Drinks] The tea was good, and served in aesthetic little mugs.

Yelp
Been hearing about this place a lot and I finally got to try it on a Saturday night! It's a smaller restaurant and I would definitely recommend making reservations. Service is friendly and efficient! I got the omakase B set I believe and I did not regret it. All the fish was really fresh and you can tell that a lot of time has been put into prepping. However, they use brown rice I believe for all the sushi and it didn't taste as good as it could've been. I prefer regular sushi rice and it would've been perfect ! Also got the unagi rice, portions were pretty big and it was super flavourful! Pricing here is fair for the quality you get. Would definitely recommend checking this out !

Yelp
I was shocked to find this place not being packed around 8:15p. Ordered the Omakase and I was blown away. Every piece was just perfect, one of the highest quality Omakase I've ever experienced. I wasn't rushed, in fact, the chef was waiting for me to finish each bite before preparing the next. Cheers.

Yelp
Really high quality sushi. I came here spontaneously on a Tuesday night, and there were a few tables open (definitely a plus... good sushi in Vancouver tends to be difficult to walk in for!). This place seems new but given how good it was, I wouldn't be surprised if it started getting packed every night. I ordered the Sashimi Moriawase, which was 18 pieces -- 3 pieces each of six different types of sashimi. They also added their special of the day, which was the live shrimp. These were the most generous cuts of high-quality fish I've ever had. The otoro, salmon, and uni were the most memorable -- super buttery and fresh. They served freshly ground wasabi and shiso leaves with the bowl, which was also a lovely touch. I also ordered a scallop nigiri, aburi style, which was well done but probably not the best choice for trying the aburi. Would actually get the nigiri omakase / platter if I came back as the cuts of fish were so thick that it felt a bit like an overload of raw fish at the end. Not complaining though :-) Would come back in a heartbeat!

Yelp
I'm going to try and keep this kind of short and simple but I have a lot of good things to say about this new restaurant as my mom had an exceptional time here! My friend first told me about this new restaurant and said there were good reviews about it so I decided to take my mom here for her birthday. You wouldn't expect it to serve such delicious sushi since it's tucked away in a small space just away from the busy Granville strip. It's a very small restaurant owned by a Japanese family who are very nice and welcoming. We ordered 3 different dishes: Beef Tataki - A very generous proportion and carefully plated with a tiny dot of Wasabi on each piece on top of a bed of salad - be sure to have some with each bite! The beef was seared perfectly and the sauce was the right amount of saltiness. Kaisen Chirashi Don - I honestly thought a $50 Chirashi was quite a bit but I was pleasently surprised at the portions again! There was 2-3 pieces of each sashimi selection, all were very fresh, and I'd have to say sashimi to rice ratio was on point! I hate having too much rice leftover or I feel like I need to eat more rice than I need to...or maybe it's the ocd in me ‍ Sushi Moriawase - At first I thought it seemed a bit redundant for me to order the assorted nigiri after the chirashi but it's definitely not the same and there were quite a few selections that weren't in the bowl. As expected, the nigiris were all delicious with a small dab of wasabi inside just the way I like it next time I will definitely try to order nigiris separately and try more. An honorable mention is definitely the tamago! Every time I try a new Japanese restaurant I have to try their tamago because it's my fave. Theirs was definitely different in the sense it was kind of like a cross between chawanmushi and tamago with a surprise of shrimp inside! We finished off the night with a complimentary chefs chocolate cake with Cream cheese and maple syrup (no sugar!) sauce. This one is here to stay so you'll for sure get to try it. I love how it's a dessert but not too sweet at all! I highly recommend dining here and try snagging a seat by the bar so you can watch him in action and converse with him :)

Yelp
WOW!! Came here because the place I bookmarked on yelp was closed on Sunday's. Def lucked out and had the best sushi experience ever! I'm visiting from LA and I thought we had good sushi but damn! This place is hands down the best sushi I've had. Will be making another stop before leaving. Yes, it's that good. Get the omakase and let the chef do his magic!

Yelp
Tried this sushi place for my birthday, it was right under our airbnb. I was very impressed with the quality of the dishes, it was on the pricey side but I would certainly go back! The chef taught us some of the different fish and showed us techniques on how he made certain dishes. Was interactive and fun. Best part was they had beef dishes for my husband who doesn't eat seafood haha! The complimentary green tea and chocolate cake bite were a really nice touch too :)

Yelp
SO GOOD! I wanted to try this place after seeing all the hype on yelp and I'm so glad I did. Came around 6:00 and waited ten minutes for a table. I read on here that they don't take reservations so I didn't bother calling but as we were waiting they were taking a bunch of reservations for the following day. All the nigiri and sashimi we ordered tasted amazing. The otoro was so buttery and soft! There's only one chef but the food came out relatively fast and I really enjoyed all the pretty table wear. Service was good too. It's pricey though but you get what you pay for. One of my new favourite Japanese restaurants in Vancouver.

Yelp
This new gem #sushibar is recommended to me by a fellow foodie. It sure not disappoint. Many freshly imported Japanese fishes are served in this #edomaesushi joint. I #sayorisushi #engawa #uniikuradon #suzukisushi #tamago Interesting fact/ - chef owner is Korean but speaks Japanese - they serve true edomae style sushi - meaning warmer rice and sushi has sweet soy already brushed on (no dip required) - free dessert of the day was homemade brownie served with yogurt cream

Yelp
Traveling to Vancouver. Wanted good sushi. Look no further. As someone who loves sushi, this was amazing. Order the #1. Get 12 different chef pick nigiri. It's the right thing to do. Fresh. Preparation is 10/10. Price is amazing. Well worth it.

Yelp
Just experienced the BEST sushi since Hawaii over 20 years ago. This place gets it! Once in a while you find a place that exceeds it all but isn't discovered. Frankly if I were to recommend one restaurant in the world this place wins hands down! Arrived at 7:15 pm. Actually a very small location, I think I counted 12 tables with no bar. One chef, helper and 2 waitresses. Service was spectacular. The fish was fresh. Wasabi was fresh graded each time. Soy sauce was exquisite. Delicate and lightly salty in taste. Each piece of Nigiri was artistically designed. See pictures below, some have hashtags, a few have star design and others had layered pieces into one Nigiri. The chef constantly changed serving when I ordered multiple times. Spectacular! Recommend? Hurry before it's discovered! Well done!

Yelp
If you're willing to pay a bit more you'll find out the extra cost is worth it! My gf and I love Sushi Jin! First off it's close to where we live. A 10 minute walk get you from our door to the restaurant door! Not bad considering the bother of driving and the expense of parking downtown. I've been to lots of high end sushi places in Van City... but I have to say Sushi Jin is my new favourite! We discovered this gem maybe a month ago but we've been here twice already! Quite simply it's the freshest and best sushi you can find in town period! That's a bold statement, but I challenge you to try it! I'm confident you won't be disappointed! The restaurant itself is very small and intimate. It only seats 20 guests. Yes I counted! It's a quiet place. A place where the music can be heard in the background...Not the foreground! It's a restaurant that promotes the lost art of conversation! We went to Sushi Jin like a month ago for the first time. We went there last night and we talked to the owner (the sushi chef). I was so impressed that he remembered us, and he noted where we sat the first time we came to his restaurant. The rice they use to make their sushi is quite unique. At first I thought it was brown rice but it's white rice mixed with red vinegar. Really nice and tasty. Everything is great there but I recommend the King Salmon... It's the wagyu of salmon... the best salmon... really soft and tasty... The Unagi and rice dish is really good too! I suggest sharing unagi is pretty rich and there is a lot of unagi in this dish... too much for 1 person to eat. Finally, I suggest the tamago... It's so smooth with a touch of sweet you'd think its dessert! Alright check out my pics and make it a point to treat yourself and try out Sushi Jin!

Yelp
The nigiri is awesome, very authentic Japan sushi, feels like in Japan. I love it! Really recommend to the sushi favors, they are fresh and yummy

Yelp
Went for dinner with a friend who came back to Vancouver for holiday. The best thing was the white prawn on the daily menu, it was so fresh and sweet. Service was good, the server came by several times to check on us. The chef served us complimentary dish which was king crab leg. Con. 1. we ordered about 10 pieces nigiri, fish were really fresh. But every piece of them fall apart, rice just not sticky enough I guess. 2. Dishes came too fast at the beginning, we got about 3/4 dishes in the first 5 minutes. 3. I wasn't really enjoy the complimentary dessert, the chocolate cake. I think it was too strong to have after all the freshly fish.

Yelp
This place was the best surprise... At first, I was a little taken aback by the steep prices, and the fact that our order took almost an hour to get to the table.. By the time I had the first bite, everything was forgiven. By far the best sushi I've ever had, and I've been to Japan. Everything (the fish AND the meat sushi) melts in your mouth in the most amazing way, and the flavour is subtle and not overpowering. It really showcases the fish in the best way without being too fancy. The ambience is small and quaint and quiet, great for small groups or a date. I would definitely come back again and again and again!

Yelp
This restaurant is incredibly authentic!! Makes you feel like you're in Japan even though I've never been. The dishes come out omakase style so you're only eating one dish at a time. The sashimi is extremely fresh and of the highest quality. 10/10 would recommend but is on the pricier end. The only downside is that the menu is quite limited. Otherwise, the overall experience was amazing. Until then yelpers! -M

Yelp
This is the best place I have ever been for sashimi. The fish are insanely fresh and good! Plating is pretty nice as well. The place is not big and can only serve 4-6 tables (depends on how many people on each table). Have nice music too! Cons: they don't have limited options for hot food at the moment (no udons, terriyaki etc). Maybe they want to focus on sushi and sashimi, or because of new opening? ( PS: forgot to take photo for the assorted sashimi, which is amazing :) )

Yelp
It's been a while, not being able to eat out during covid is not easy. While I've become somewhat of a covid home chef, nothing just cannot be replaced. I am so grateful to have my very last meal in Vancouver at sushi Jin! Gourmet sushi, state of art presentation and phenomenal customer service! Thanks Sushi Jin

Yelp
Can I give 10/5 for the sashimi? Freshest sashimi I have ever eaten! A bit pricy but the plating is great and the atmosphere is cozy. Not really good for big group though.
